Support ESXi 5.0 host FC connected tape drives in the virtual machine running symantec backup exec 2012

Dear Experts,

We recently purchased C0H19A: StoreEver HP 1/8 G2 6 - LTO Ultrium 6250 CF TapeAutoloader. The purpose is to backup of VMS data, I mean selected data in virtual machines, as for the exchange of data bases email for server accounts database SQL server etc.. We have a full VM backup plan, so using symantec backup exec software.

We have this configuration:

-TWO DL 380 Gen8 servers (running UPDATE2 Esxi 5.0), both servers have not all SCSI ports

-One SINGLE HP P2000 G2 MSA FC Dual Cntrl storage

-TWO HP SN6000 12 - pt Windows Pwr FC switch

-HP ADF

All them above are related to the CF. Symantec backup exec 2012 is also installed on Windows 2008 R2, which is a virtual machine.

But now, we are unable to see the tape library autoloader through the virtualization layer in the device of machine Manager virtual backup exec. Reading on internet, I also found some details that connected FC tape drives are not supported by the Esxi hosts. We are really stuck in this situation, all the solutions to this. I also read the article from vmware saying configuration for Esxi 4.0 FC tape drives and later versions

Installation of a physical server windows with Backup Exec 2012 and HBA and connected to above switches FC is the only way to see the ADF? Even after reading articles on the internet, I'm not clear, please guide what solution I have now to get this thing going, I really need to find solution to this.

Waiting for answers.

Kind regards

Hello, I'm a Backup Exec support engineer and yes the method supported is only by connecting the tape drive to a server of physical media. • Through host SCSI tape drive to the virtual computer with the backup software installed in the comments

Can I attach an external SCSI tape drive to one of my hosts, and then add it as a device in a virtual machine.

I want to use backup exec on a virtual machine, rather than having to have a separate physical server to attach the tape drive. I realize that I wouln't be able to vmotion the guest but as its only going to be a backup machine I am happy with that.

    Thanks in advance,

    Yes is possible.

I have a Dell TL2000 with a dedicated SAS card and it works (not faster than in a real environment, but works).

You add the SCSI ID of the tape (and the library, if any) to the virtual machine.

Or, if your hardware can he take charge, using VMDirectPath and give the card on the virtual computer.

I wanted to use my virtual XP to print using my old printer that the printer driver can only support XP. But I can't find a way to link my host and the virtual drive, because my file is located in the host drive.

1 change the settings of the virtual machine

    2. go to the Options tab

    3. Select shared folders

    4. Select always enabled

5 Add the folder that you want to use

    6. Select map as a network drive in Windows prompt

  • the other hard drive to the host system does not show in the virtual machine

I tried but I couldn't find an article on how to get the other host hard disk appears in the my window of the computer of the VM guest.  I don't want a virtual disk or anything like that, just access the other hard disk of the local host without having to map a drive to it if possible.  Thank you!

Physical disks are not supported on VMware Server 2 (at least not via GUI options).

  • No network connection between the virtual machines on different hosts ESXi

I have several 5.0 ESXi hosts in a cluster managed by vCenter Server 5 and I have network problems:

    1. [Host A] running a virtual machine can ping any other computer virtual running on the [host A] great!
    2. A virtual machine running on host [B] can ping any other virtual machine running on [B] home - very well!
    3. [host A] (from the ESXi console) can ping any virtual machine running on [B] home - even better!
    4. [B] home (from the ESXi console) can ping any virtual machine running [host A] - beautiful set!
    5. A virtual machine running [host A] can not ping any virtual computer running on host [B] and vice versa - bad, very bad!

So basically the problem is that the virtual machines can communicate on hosts. It is a major problem that I need to fix, for obvious reasons.

Networking on all hosts is configured exactly the same way: a unique and standard vSwitch with a pair of gigabit network cards grouped, vmkernels configured for the vMotion, NFS and network management and a group of ports configured for the VIRTUAL local area network used by the VMs. (vMotion works fine on hosts, storage vMotion works very well too.) All virtual machines are servers Windows (2003 and 2008).

Reason #3 and #4 above, my assumption is that #5 must be the result of an ESXi/vCenter configuration issue and not a problem with the switches of material upstream. Is this a reasonable assumption?

Whatever it is, can anyone offer suggestions on how can I fix? It is quite annoying as I'm pretty sure that these hosts are configured in the same manner as those of our production cluster, which does not at all these problems!

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

To be honest, it looks like a problem with your physical network-

How is the physical network configured - are NIC connects it to the same physical switches? Are the virtual machines on the same subnet? If this is not the case, they are able to ping the gateway sbnet? Can you piing host IP address from the virtual machines?

I also moved it to a forum more approiate.

    Hi all

I need to save and plan to purchase Symantec Backup Exec 2012 month next but the seller said "all backup software no ESXi free support" because API service off, so I have to buy vSphere Essentials.

Is it factual information? If so, can you suggest me other solution?

    Thank you

Note: Must be a Standard license for vSphere to BE 2012 properly protect guest hosted ESXi systems.

Note: Everything is free version of ESXi (4i and 5) require a minimum of VMware license in order to be protected by Backup Exec. This is due to the lack of API vStorage to help to protect data in versions without a free license of ESXi and VMware current limiting.

  • You can enable CDP on a host with virtual machines running?

I want to activate CDP on my 3 hosts vShpere 4.1. Each host has about 20 guests on this subject. If I activate CDP via putty will affect the network connectivity of the virtual machines running on the vSwitch? Can I move all the VMS hospitality first?

    Hi Letstub,

There is no need to evacuate your virtual machines from the vSwitch. Enable or disable CDP has no impact on the communications of the network of virtual machines. The following article that explains how to enable CDP mentions this prerequisite:

  • Host detects the virus that is ran in the virtual machine

When I google search for "virus to test download" and open the 2nd link in my windows 7 VM, avast on my host computer is like VIRUS DETECTED. I'm guessing that this occurs because the virtual computer uses the internet hosts.

PS: it was once my I.T. teacher told me that he was sure navigation in a virtual machine.

Host antivirus can detect the test virus in the network traffic and also could detect when the VM saves on hard drive of the virtual machine (which, after all, is stored just as a set of files on the hard drive of the host).  Some antivirus programs scan even the memory used by all processes running, in which case it can also discover that the test virus from the data in the memory of the virtualization engine.  None of these situations are a source of real concern for the host.

Navigation in a virtual machine is generally considered safe from the point of view of the host, but virtualization will do nothing to directly protect the OS itself invited to malware that it can capture.

Note that VMware Workstation has a few features that deliberately to break the isolation barrier and could expose the host to a malicious client.  If you are worried about it, a good starting point to lock the virtual computer is to go in the settings of the virtual machine, choose the Options tab, make sure the shared folders is disabled (under Guest insulation), make sure that the Clipboard and features drag-and - drop are disabled.

    See you soon,.

  • How to install vmware tools in a virtual machine running in the drive on an Ubuntu host?

I have a host of Ubuntu (Ubuntu LTS 14.04.2)

I have a virtual of Fedora (4.0.4 - 301.fc22.x86_64) and I would like to install vmware tools in the virtual machine.

When I select the player VirtualMachine-> reinstall VMware Tools...

I get a prompt in a box on the screen.  It is said:

The following software are available for download:

VMware Tools for Linux version 9.9.3

    What do you do?

X Cancel |  Download and install

Of course I choose to download and install (kind of silly question - why I want to cancel?)

So instead of download the tools I want to install, it says:

Your permission is required to install an update to VMware.

Please enter the root password to move forward.

    Password: __________

not serious.  Now, he's looking for what root password?  The virtual machine or the host?

I have try the virtual machine and it works-not "incorrect password... try again."

... well Ubuntu is not a root user.  So, I try the password for the user with root privileges

    "incorrect password... try again."

    Then, he does not.

    Not very satisfying.

The instructions that I found in my research right you will say to take the step to obtain the Tools package then (well, nothing of the rest of it is important if the tools are not available to me).

    Suggestions?  Advice?

The required password is for the host.

A workaround of functions is "sudo su -" of ubuntu host, then start vmplayer from the root prompt.  You must browse the virtual machine since the user doesn't have a history of openness yet... but then there is no prompt asking for a password when you try to download the tools.

  • ESXi 4.0 on Dell 1850 this host doesn't support VT you have configured the virtual machine to use an operating system 64-bit client.

    Hello

, I have in 3 data centers Dell 1850, identical hardware configurations.  I installed Esxi 4.0 to the ISO from site Web de VMware dell custom help. He is successfully installed on all servers, without error at all. I've updated them all to the last generation, using VMware vSphere Client. I have a problem with one of the server when I want to use 64-bit machines, he realizes: this host does not support VT you have configured the virtual machine to use an operating system 64-bit client.  However, this host is not able to run 64-bit virtual machines or virtual computer has 64-bit support disabled. For more information, see http://www.vmware.com/info?id=152. I don't understand why I got this, servers are identical, versions of BIOS, firmware, and all updates are the same. There is also a warning in the configuration tab, on the State of health link.

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestion.

Yes according to the description of CPU, it seems that they do not support intel VT:

  • Cannot start the virtual machine guest after receiving "License expired message" host ESXi 5.5

I can't start computer virtual invited after receiving "License expired message" 5.5 ESXi host. I am able to copy the vm folder prompted with all its files using WinSCP I had already installed on a desktop computer in the network.

However, it takes an extremely long time to download the VM [2.5 mb/s], which is of course a different question.

It seems that I was still on the trial with my vsphere client license, until it expired. I am able to view the virtual machine within the workstation 10, but I can't turn it on. It says "Please install a license to power on this computer" there is no way to install a license anywhere.

My question is... .will I be able to access this virtual machine if I download on an external hard drive, then add it to 10 VMWorkstation that I possess a current valid license?

Even if the evaluation license has expired, you should be able to connect to the ESXi host using the vSphere Client and follow the steps mentioned in the article that I posted before you enter the free license key.

  • Cannot connect or ping to the host of the virtual machine of the DMZ or VPN

    Hello

I'm trying to convert a physical machine to a virtual using the Converter Standalone Client.

The machine that I am trying to convert is in a DMZ and is not a member of the domain.

I installed the client, but it could not connect to host. I started to run tests and found that I can ping any machine on my local network on this computer in the DMZ outside the virtual machine host.  I got the firewall set to open completely (for the test) and that did not help either.

I noticed a similar problem over the weekend when I VPN from home but couldn't connect using the Infrastructure Client or ping to my host, despite me being able to ping and connect to any computer on my network...

I don't see anything in the config of ESXi that relates to this, and I am at a loss.

And finally, I continue to see sites with linux commands to run in the ESX box to perform tasks, but I don't see how I run these. I have the cli installed, but it won't let me run some scripts .pl in the directory "/ bin" while I continue to see cited normal linux commands.

    Thanks (again)

    Hedley

The extent of the lack of connectivity, it seems associated network/firewall. Out of the box nothing in ESXi should prevent communication if properly configured. I guess that since you can connect in some places that the connection is good and an appropriate IP address assigned to the interface.

I would check your firewall rules to be sure nothing is blocked. Don't know what kind of firewall you use so no this cant of detail out of direct suggestions.

Secondly, regarding the execution of orders, most of these commands you see is for full blown ESX. Out of the box, ESXi has a limited number of advanced features. The main difference in ESXi 3.5 and ESX is that ESXi is not a full blown service console to limit so task that you can perform.
