Option 'Open with' gone!

I recently had to do a restore system and cleaning that is caused by a virus. Now when I right click on a file using the 'Open with' option if it has now disappeared there, in fact many other options that I used to have is gone but I just want the option 'Open with' return! I tried the whole registry thing, but never worked, or maybe I am doing wrong? Someone please help!

  • Put links to video files in web pages - want option 'Open with' when the viewer clicks on the links.

If I go to a video file that is stored in my computer, for example xyz.mp4 and right click on it, one of the options is 'Open with' and several options for example QuickTime player, RealPlayer are presented for me to choose. But when I add the file to a web page and create a link to it for example http://sillyvideos.com/xyz.mp4 and then I right click on this link (on the web page) in my Firefox browser, I don't get the option 'open with '. My question is: is it possible to put a link to a video in a web page, so I or other viewers can click right on it and benefit from the option 'open with' (so we can choose the drive to open it, without having to download first in our computers)?

Normally what happens, is that the server sends the content with one or more headers that dictate what Firefox did with the video.

For example, if the content is sent with a header that Firefox can play internally, then Firefox can open the video in a tab and use a built-in player. You can see with MP3s when the server says that it is "audio/mpeg" content. However, if the server sends a content type that a capable of handling plugin, Firefox can attempt this plugin.

Normally Firefox will assume that the content is meant to be displayed in the browser, unless it is an unknown type or has a content-disposition header set to "attachment". In these cases, Firefox usually has open/save/Cancel dialog box.

I don't know what kinds of choices you want to offer visitors to your site, but if you thought giving them a choice of the players external , sending to content-disposition: attachment to make appear the probably the most logical open/save/Cancel dialog box. With smaller files such as JPEG and PDF, I did it with a script on the server side (for example, a PHP script). I don't know if the script would work with multimedia files.

If you want to provide more choices, you might need the buttons or links in the page.

This example applies to a PDF file, but the same idea applies to the image files and it can work with files more mainstream media. (In this case, you change the script to specify the correct content type.)

Implementation of the PHP approach, you follow these steps. This assumes that your server supports PHP (most do so) and that your Web host allows you to download PHP files.

    (1) save the following as getpdf.php file

    http://www.jeffersonscher.com/RES/getpdf.php.txt

    (2) using a FTP software or your server download function, copy getpdf.php into the same folder as your PDF file

    (3) test with your link. In the address bar, or in an e-mail, insert the following text before the name of the PDF file:

    getpdf.php?f=

Thus, for example, this direct link to the PDF:

    http://www.jeffersonscher.com/RES/Mixed_Content_Blocking.PDF

would become this link to the PHP file:

    http://www.jeffersonscher.com/RES/getpdf.php? f =Mixed_Content_Blocking.pdf

  • I don't have any option 'Open with' for downloads

I click on a file in a Web site to open it, but the box pop up no not the option "open with...". ", only the save option. The file type is a text document with the extension ".prg" associated with in my Windows Folder Options to open with Wordpad. Breast of Firefox Tools/Options/Applications, this file type does not appear, so I can't change it. I've read elsewhere where it is blamed on the MIME type in the HTML header, but Microsoft Internet Explorer gets it right every time, only Firefox does not recognize the file type.

"Either way, the same site has files with the extension".chg "I open it with Notepad. Firefox offers the 'Open with' option to these files with Notepad as the defauld, but the "always open with" is grayed out. Not that I care, as the default is what I want, but...

Firefox goes by MIME type, not the type of file, like IE does.

I'm fine with the display of PDF files in Acrobat, but have found that other tools are easier for me to use to edit files (such as text entry). Is it possible to have quickly another program opens a PDF file that I am posting in Acrobat PDF Reader? I have seen that other programs PDF have a menu option to open the current file in Adobe. I was wondering if Adobe has a similar option.

    NO.

  • Cannot add my prog for 'Open with' favorite photo editing options.

My favorite picture of prog, Serif PhotoPlus X 6 edition, has disappeared from the list of options 'Open with' and I can't add in to make my option "Default". The program is loaded into the C: drive and works normally from a shortcut on the desktop. Until recently he has featured in the options 'Open with', but not now.

    Yes - just to clarify.

Another thought - how about uninstalling and then reloading the program... is it possible?

  • Right click 'Open with' missing order. Help please.

A few days ago, I realized that the 'Open with' contextual right click menu command is missing. However its there at the top of the window on the "menu bar" or whatever.
Not sure how it happened. Maybe when I installed MS .net Framework 3 SP1 or maybe when I cleaned the registry with CCleaner.
I need to get it back please. Could U tell me how? Thank you.

    Hi, scurvy:

By design, the open with menu option is not available when you click on executables (.cmd, .bat, .pif, .scf, .exe, .com or .scr), or shortcuts to executable files.

If you have lost the menu option open with for all types of files, including non-executable files, follow these steps:

    1. click on Start, all programs, Accessories, Notepad.

    2. copy and paste this text:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ * \shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open with]
    @= "{09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}".

    3. click on file, record under, name the file "OpenWith.reg" (WITH THE QUOTES) and click OK.

    4. double-click on OpenWith.reg, click continue, Yes, OKand see if the problem is resolved.

PS: My personal opinion is not to use no matter WHAT registry cleaner on the system.

  • What happened to "open with...". »

How is it a lot of files is an option "open with...". » ? How can I get that back? How to set a default application for a file without opening it with... option? (Let me guess, wading through a whole menu rather that just put a check mark in the window "open with... ». But the menus).

And, why MS keep doing this? What was wrong with the open with... choice? Why remove?

I highlighted the file and selected the file - open and got a window open with. Why it gets a checkbox for "Set as default for this file" (or whatever that this box used to say)?

Why would you do this harder? It's really not rocket science. If you have the window, give the box? Why go through the effort to write the code to show sometimes and sometimes not and, invariably, make choices that are different from what your users want? Just add the freaking box and give users a configuration option to define whether it is by default checked or not.

    Thank you.

Right-click on the file and go to properties. Change.

  • Open with settings is not applied to the photo to open in Photoshop Elememtns 11

original title: Open with not working do not like exepced

Hi - I am trying to use the option 'Open with' in order to open a photo in Photoshop elements 11.  However, I have a problem.  The program is open, but it will not automatically open the photo (I can open pictures from the program by going to file - open very well).  In an earlier version of this program, that it worked very well by using 'Open with' to open a picture.  Once I put a picture on my desk and used 'Open with' and it worked great with version 11 of the program.  However, I can't seem to get it to open from this location now or any other location using 'open with '.  I think that the problem may be that the element of the "Open with" list points to the wrong thing then I try to select "Choose default program" and select the correct program through it.  However, once that I click on this file which is supposed to be used to open the photo and click Open, the file does not appear in the open with dialog box.  It is not yet here.  The only thing he is the link wrong despite the fact that I clicked on the link at right.  The strange thing is that it works on the screen of another user on the same computer.  I don't want to migrate all of my stuff for a new user - too much work.  Any ideas?

  • Make a right click Open with 13 elements

Not a huge biggie, but I have updated to PSE13 (like improvements, in particular the Undo feature; and the stability of PSE13 compared to 12 [for Mac which is]) I'm running OS Mavericks X 10.9.5. My camera a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 (camera great by-the-way). Now if I right click on the image of RW2 I do not receive an option to open with PSE13 which seems strange to me. I used 'open with' other PSE13 Publisher and chose always open with PSE13 said. So now as soon as I left click upward is PSE13 for editing that was precisely what I was looking for. The default value on the RC is PhotoMatix which I use occasionally. "Topaz" plug-ins simply hover of 12 to 13 so all very well that this stupid thing on the RC.

So why not make an option open with PSE13 if you right-click a RW2 file? Everything on the hard drive offers this choice; other than my camera RW2 files.

    RC = right click.

    Thanks in advance

    Mozzy.

I'm thrilled to say that the Village of items came prevails and completely solved the problem for me. Make a click right/get info/open bottom/change all and all and completely dusted.

Make A right click now give me PSE13 as default or simply click on a RW2 file and it will open in PSE13.
