However, the BIOS currently on my machine is version F.49. F.49 would be not newer than a F.48? Can someone explain the discrepancy and tell me if there are significant differences between the two versions of the BIOS?

  I ended up installing the BIOS revision F.46, because this revision restores the ability of the computer to enter and exit the sleep and hibernation modes, which was broken in a future revision of the BIOS (which has been a HUGE source of frustration). In the absence of other information on the revisions of the BIOS, I recommend that users go with revision F.46. The 32-bit version of Windows 10 works beautifully with F.46 on my g6-1d21dx Pavilion.

  sp48024 is the latest bios for your laptop, but I think that you already have it.  Although the posting date for this update is closed April 5, 2010, the file AVCs to sp48024 on the link below tells the bios is in fact as of March 22, 2010 - see the DetailFileInformation field.
