PC crashes when Microsoft Security Essentials attempts to download updates

I have PC with XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3.  Whenever Microsoft Security Essentials tries to update automatically, the PC hangs and I have to unplug it to make it work again.  This isn't a good thing!  Does anyone have an idea what to do?
