Preowned iphone 4 connected to iTunes. It will automatically erase all data?

I bought an old iphone 4 which had been pawned and connected to iTunes by the previous owner and I would like to I have iTunes connect to download music, photos etc. will be connect to a computer to clear my iphone and me start over from scratch or can I just straight up the phone on my PC and you don't have to worry about restoring. I've had the phone for almost two years and if it wasn't my link with the world, it don't worry me so but at this point im afraid to even connect
