Prerequisites hardware ESXi 4.0

I'm just getting started trying to kick the tires on a base install ESXi 4.0.  I read the first pages of the installation guide, but the layout was a bit confused as to what was required related controllers and hard disks.

Right now, I have a simple 1U rackmount server with a processor AMD Opteron 64 bit, 4 GB RAM and four SATA drives, which are managed by the integrated chipset (and probably not compatible HCL).  A single SATA HDD is currently in use as the Startup Windows 2003 disk.

Is a SATA or SAS RAID or necessary integrated chipset controller in

in order to install ESXi 4.0? And if yes, what is it needed for?  Sorry if this is a common question of noobie - I did some research via both Google and the forums but couldn't find answers.

Is a SATA controller or SAS RAID or chipset integrated required to install ESXi 4.0? And if yes, what is it needed for?

To try to answer your question more basically: no, a RAID controller is not necessary to install ESX.  If this machine is a production machine, then you'll want a hardware RAID controller, preferably one from the HCL list, because you'll want to part 'R' of RAID (Redundant Array of independent Drives) for a certain reliability.  But for a training machine, you can get away with a little downtime, so install ESX on even a hard drive is fine.

  • migrate the production esx 4.0 to 5 new hardware esxi environment

I intend to migrate my production esx4.0 vSphere esxi 5 environment (new hardware) environment. How can I migrate my vms to production that are hosted on esx 4.0 (3 hosts managed by vcenter) to new material, that is to say 3 new hosts running esxi5? I want to leave my production environment intact in case I need to back off because of problems if it is possible? I am aware that:

    «My upgrade VMFS-5 doesn't have a block size of 1 MB.» Why?

Upgrade of VMFS-5 partitions retain the characteristics of the partition of the data store VMFS-3 original, including the block size of the file, size of 64 K subblock, etc.. To take full advantage of all the benefits of VMFS-5, migrate virtual machines to a different data store (s), delete the existing one and re data store - create using VMFS-5".
so ideally, I want to create a new data store instead of to upgrade and move my VM prod on this.

What are the options that are available to me? Thank you.

I wonder if it would make a big difference to save storage space?

30 years ago I probably would have said it makes a difference, but today, it is probably more expensive (i.e. is not worth spending time) to create a new data store and migrate everything to a few KB.

  • Recommendation of hardware ESXi 4

    Hi all

I had a question on the recommendation of material.

at the moment I m running 2 physical servers, 1 file server with the AD, 1 Terminalserver with Applications (Word/Excel/Outlook installed)

Now, I want to virtualize file servers and the Terminalserver on a new machine. At the present time the Terminalserver/AD has manage users 38.

The Terminalserver has a CPU load of 14 to 20%. It s processor is an Intel Xeon 5060 with 2 x 3200, 4 GB of RAM and a RAID 10 146 GB

Now, I want to install the new server (you have to tell me the recommendation of material please) with the announcement and the terminalserver, on the old terminalserver I want to run a server (just for a few months)

Also I have a Dell m1000 San works as a compartment for the VM´s future.

So please give me some hardware settings I can work with, because I had no idea what setting would be the best.

    Thank you very much.

It would be a good approach. It will take two supported server (see the vmware HCL) and a vCenter Server (which may be virtual with some restrictions). These servers must be connected to the shared storage (make sure it's on the HCL, too) and of course, you will need the aprroprirate Linceses vSphere. It ultimately will cost more then a stand-alone esxi, but it is certainly the best choice for a productive environment.

  • mix and match between vsphere 4.0 virtual machine and the hardware esxi 3.5 version run 4 on vsphere 4.

If you run a virtual machine on vsphere and not upgrade the virtual hardware, this has it problems?

My plan was to install on a server and then machines of vm, vsphere without upgrading the hardware on the machine to the virtual machine.

So I can then migrate the machines on my esxi 3.5 server if necessary.

Like many of you, I plan to update my test servers before upgrading my production servers.

If you have 3.x hosts in your cluster, and then I'd wait for upgrade virtual hardware and your guests VMware tools until all your ESX hosts are on the same generation.

  • Limitations of free hardware ESXi

    Hello

I have looked for this and found the limits for the different versions under Vsphere license, but nothing for the ESXi free installation managed by the client of vServer.

I'm hoping to buy a Dell R610 two 2.6 GHz processors with 32 or 48 GB of RAM to try on ESXi and I hope that eventually be used as part of a virtualization solution.

My question is, is there a limit on the amount of RAM and CPU used by the edition? Am I also right in thinking that you can't slim available without paying for the license?

    Thank you

Take a look at this table of differences: http://blogs.vmware.com/esxi/2009/06/esxi-vs-esx-a-comparison-of-features.html

vSphere Client which is a graphical utility for Windows managed a free version of ESXi individual is FREE, if you're referring to the vCenter management system, then Yes, you pay money for that. Otherwise the rest of the differences are listed in the link above

  • VMs see hardware ESXi don't?

I'm trying to setup a whitebox, but I am stuck because I see that Sil based 3132 SATA cards are not supported with ESXi.  However, I have an ICH9 chipset on the motherboard and some of my readers are connected on it.  So if I install ESXi on either of the drives attached to the ICH9 SATA and get a VM's, is it possible that the virtual machine can be able to see the extra drives attached to the Sil 3132 card?  If I can somehow map Sil 3132 card directly on the virtual computer, then my plans will work.  Otherwise I won't have enough readers for my needs.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I googled all day and have not been able to mount a response (probably because I don't know the right conditions).

    Thank you

    Drew

It is not possible to pass through any material.  Everything sees the virtual computer is simulated in force.

  • Prerequisites hardware Certification - storage - Volume_Grow test unclear

    Hello

According to the Certification of storage guide, the following information is indicated for Volume_Grow test:

This test checks a VMFS volume more during the VM I/O on the several hosts VMFS volume. Before you run this test, configure all the virtual machines with a single virtual adapter.

Could you please explain, what exactly? What virtual adapter? What needs to be changed on virtual machines before you run the test?

    Thank you!

I think he's talking not only to ensure that all your virtual machines have only a single SCSI adapter.  If you've run the SCSI-2/SCSI-3 tests already, you may have added additional adapters to your VM.

  • New hardware ESXi host

    Hi all

I'm looking for a rough general outline so that I have a little more confidence going to our upgrade.

Currently, we have 4 x Dell PE2950s that all work ESX3.5i. We replace the latter with Dell PER710 with ESX4.0i 3.

The current hosts are all connected to a Dell Equalogic ISCSI San. This SAN has all virtual machines, HA, etc. New hosts ESX4.0i will connect to the same SAN.

What I have to do is to remove all 2950 s Dell and replace them with our new R710s, same running virtual machines.

Does anyone have reccomendations/tips/links is the most painless way to achieve this?

    Thank you for your time!

Edit* forgot to mention that we are currently conducting vCenter 4.0 to manage our 3.5i existing hosts. This same dialog vCenter will also manage the new hosts.

Welcome to the Forums - the way the easiest would be to add new servers to your vCenter environment and give them access to the LUNS existing and then you have a number of options to migrate them to the new hosts - since the voltage to the low remove them on new hosts to time and inventory if the hosts are compatible with vmotion-the official wqill leveling guide give you advice - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_upgrade_guide.pdf

  • Create notification of a particular hardware for ESXi host problem?

    Hello

One of our 5.1 ESXi hosts is constantly a hardware problem (with hardware alert status).

We would like to ask for your opinion

    (1) if we create a notification, should we use 'host' alarm?

    (2) is it possible to send a notification to the staff for this particular host with error alarm "host" other than other ESXi hosts (i.e. send to Tony and Stephen for ESXi host A Harware problem BUT only sent to Tony for another hardware ESXi hosts problem)?

    Your opinion is requested.

    Hello

No, there is no option to select specific host in a cluster. When you set the alarm, it is fixed for the whole army in the cluster.

  • ESXi 5.1 and VMFS-3 data warehouses

We have an existing environment to ESX 3.5 Update 5 7 host and an EMC CX3-10 x iSCSI SAN. We go to decomission 2 ESX hosts and replace them with hardware ESXi 5.1 and recent guests. We realize that we no longer able to manage these hosts ESXi from our Virtual Center 2.5 console, but these two hosts will run a minimum number of virtual machines (Exchange 2010 multirole) that don't use VMotion, DRS and HA.

Our understanding is that ESX5.1 can see and use VMFS-3 data warehouses. Is it true that, once we plugged the new 5.1 ESXi hosts to our SAN and you can see all the existing LUN that we should be able to stop the virtual machines on two ESX 3.5 hosts and start the virtual machines on the host ESX 5.1 computers?

Everyone has problems running ESXi 5.1 with VMFS-3 data warehouses?

Some data warehouses VMFS-3 existing could be improved to VMFS-5 because they are only used by the virtual machines that work on 5.1 ESXi hosts. But some of the data warehouses VMFS-3 existing is not extensible because they are used by the virtual machines running on ESX 3.5 other hosts. In other words, a single virtual machine can have virtual drives running on the VMFS-3 and VMFS-5 warehouses of data at the same time?

    Thank you

    Jay

VMFS version isn't a problem. What I am more concerned by the fact that your storage system is not supported by ESXi 5.1.

  • Advantages and disadvantages of the use of the same network card to the network management and production (all my virtual machines) VLAN?

    Hello

I have an ESXi. The management network and the virtual machines vlan through the same network adapter.

What the disadvantages are to do?

    Can you help me please?

Well well, in this case. This is a perfect case of SPOF, try to reach NIC teaming to avoid this.

At least two cards physical network is necessary in your hardware ESXi host to do.

Download an official guide of VMware Networking from the following URL, it has got everything you need and much more.

  • Requirement of startup SAN

    Hello community members!

    It's my first article (question).

    Very grateful for any help.

I intend to install about 10 ESXi hosts with the boot from SAN (EMC storage).

Honestly, I have never deployed before SAN boot.

Are there best practices for SAN boot? Should I ask one number of logic unit for all the ESXi host operating system? or should I ask 10 LUNS 10 ESXi hosts?

What will be the size of the LUN that is recommended for the host ESXi (1 or 10 OS) operating system

Should I ask a separate logical unit number for ESXi OS?

    Thank you

    Game is

    Hi game ago,.

    Using iSCSI or FC?

You can read the Documentation for vSphere on boot ESXi of FC SAN, iSCSI or FCoE:

Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5 - boot ESXi SAN Fiber Channel

VSphere 5.5 - boot ESXi with FCoE Software Documentation Centre

5.5 vSphere Documentation Centre - using ESXi with iSCSI SAN

Make sure that your cards HBA/iSCSI and tables/storage support boot from SAN/iSCSI

Yes, you will have to ask that a LUN separated for your ESXi 10 hosts means LUN 10 (some provider requires LUN ID 0).

Don't forget to hide only the start host LUN, boot boot from SAN LUN must be masked exclusively to their host.

The host can obtain the wrong identity an incorrect LUN then you configure single initiator zoning in trunk of SAN.

The Emulex, QLogic BIOS can become insensitive, if several other initiators are in the same area and you try to select a LUN to start.

For the requirements of LUNS, you can prepare LUN ~ 6 GB for each such logic unit number as described in the Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5 - Configuration hardware ESXi

Storage for a 5.5 ESXi Installation requirements

Installing ESXi 5.5 requires a boot device is a minimum of 1 GB in size.

When booting from a local disk or SAN/LUN iSCSI, a 5.2 GB drive is necessary to allow for the creation of the VMFS volume and a scratch 4 GB partition on the boot device.
