VMs see hardware ESXi don't?

I'm trying to setup a whitebox, but I am stuck because I see that Sil based 3132 SATA cards are not supported with ESXi.  However, I have an ICH9 chipset on the motherboard and some of my readers are connected on it.  So if I install ESXi on either of the drives attached to the ICH9 SATA and get a VM's, is it possible that the virtual machine can be able to see the extra drives attached to the Sil 3132 card?  If I can somehow map Sil 3132 card directly on the virtual computer, then my plans will work.  Otherwise I won't have enough readers for my needs.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I googled all day and have not been able to mount a response (probably because I don't know the right conditions).

Thank you

Drew

It is not possible to pass through any material.  Everything sees the virtual computer is simulated in force.

  • Unable to start x 64 VMs on nested ESXi host

    Hi gurus,

I would ask your expertise on the question with my ESXi nested 5.1 checking. I managed to install the nested ESXi host, but I can't start a x 64 VMs. I continue to ask me what follows:

    x64.PNG
    Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
    DH77EB
    EBH7710H.86A.0100.2013.0312.1351
Virtualization / VT - x is already enabled in the BIOS.
Turn off the Bit is also activated.
verified the host physical and NestedHVSupported set to TRUE
added vhv.enable = "true" on the physics of the host \etc\vmware\config
    created nested ESXi VM
original operating system is any other 64 bit
Once the virtual machine is created, I changed the OS to VMware ESXi 5.x (experimental)
NX/XD flag is already set to expose
    added - H - mask CPU; ECX
Adds the following on the nested ESXi vmx file:
    Monitor.virtual_mmu = "hardware".
    Monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware".
    VHV. Enable = "true".
    monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = 'true '.
    Thanks in advance!

According to the journal of the ESXi VM file, its configuration (.vmx) file does not contain the vhv.enable = "true" entry. Only the configuration file contains, that was how it should be done in ESXi 5.0, but not in ESXi 5.1.

Try to add the entry to the ESXi VM and make sure you reload the configuration (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1026043) before turn VM ESXi.

  • Ranging from VMs to new ESXi hosts on former ESXi hosts?

    People,

I was wondering what is the situation with the execution of virtual machines created on the new version of ESXi on guests.

Example - if I have a host running 5.1 and running software to replicate to 4.1 running nightclub, the VMs system will start?

    Hello

Depends on the vm hardware version it sir - take a look at the table in the blog entry

    http://blogs.VMware.com/vSphere/2013/02/managing-virtual-hardware-versions-during-a-vSphere-upgrade.html

It gives a breakdown of the versions hw VM supported for different versions of ESX.

    Hope this helps

  • migrate the production esx 4.0 to 5 new hardware esxi environment

I intend to migrate my production esx4.0 vSphere esxi 5 environment (new hardware) environment. How can I migrate my vms to production that are hosted on esx 4.0 (3 hosts managed by vcenter) to new material, that is to say 3 new hosts running esxi5? I want to leave my production environment intact in case I need to back off because of problems if it is possible? I am aware that:

    «My upgrade VMFS-5 doesn't have a block size of 1 MB.» Why?

Upgrade of VMFS-5 partitions retain the characteristics of the partition of the data store VMFS-3 original, including the block size of the file, size of 64 K subblock, etc.. To take full advantage of all the benefits of VMFS-5, migrate virtual machines to a different data store (s), delete the existing one and re data store - create using VMFS-5".
so ideally, I want to create a new data store instead of to upgrade and move my VM prod on this.

What are the options that are available to me? Thank you.

I wonder if it would make a big difference to save storage space?

30 years ago I probably would have said it makes a difference, but today, it is probably more expensive (i.e. is not worth spending time) to create a new data store and migrate everything to a few KB.

  • Recommendation of hardware ESXi 4

    Hi all

I had a question on the recommendation of material.

at the moment I m running 2 physical servers, 1 file server with the AD, 1 Terminalserver with Applications (Word/Excel/Outlook installed)

Now, I want to virtualize file servers and the Terminalserver on a new machine. At the present time the Terminalserver/AD has manage users 38.

The Terminalserver has a CPU load of 14 to 20%. It s processor is an Intel Xeon 5060 with 2 x 3200, 4 GB of RAM and a RAID 10 146 GB

Now, I want to install the new server (you have to tell me the recommendation of material please) with the announcement and the terminalserver, on the old terminalserver I want to run a server (just for a few months)

Also I have a Dell m1000 San works as a compartment for the VM´s future.

So please give me some hardware settings I can work with, because I had no idea what setting would be the best.

    Thank you very much.

It would be a good approach. It will take two supported server (see the vmware HCL) and a vCenter Server (which may be virtual with some restrictions). These servers must be connected to the shared storage (make sure it's on the HCL, too) and of course, you will need the aprroprirate Linceses vSphere. It ultimately will cost more then a stand-alone esxi, but it is certainly the best choice for a productive environment.

  • Transfer of VMS to ESX ESXi's network

We have a cluster with two nodes 3.5 update 4 where we have a production VMs.

Developers have installed ESXi on a stand-alone machine that does not have access to a shared storage used by the cluster, so I have to find a way to move virtual machines from the ESXi host to the cluster on the network; It is okay to turn off the virtual machines while moving them.

I was thinking about ssh (ftp or any other means, but using ESXi with no service console I don't know what the best thing to do, I was wondering if anyone can suggest a way to do this, considering also that I've never used ssh to move the file so I need guidance here as well.)

    Thank you in advance.

AFAIK, you can connect to ESXi and ESX and do directly. I use it to copy directly between the ESX servers. I have no ESXi, but that shouldn't make a difference.

The tool uses SSH as a control channel, but the data is copied using FTP directly between hosts.

  • VMWare Fusion Pro can see the ESXi data store but not VM on it.

    Hi all

I have a MacPro 5.1 I am under ESXi on via a USB key. The MacPro has 4 SATA drives configured as stores of data with VM on some of them.

When connecting to the ESX host through the 'connect to server' Fusion Pro I can see data banks but not the virtual machine.

The virtual machine can be seen on the ESX host, when connecting via SFTP.

  • Move VMS between server ESXi and vSphere ESX server

    Dear all,

I want to move some a vSphere ESX server virtual machines to ESXi server.

I understand that some users will use CPS to move between the ESX servers, but apparently not for moving between different products.

I'm just using a slow and prone to error method:

The files of the virtual machine to my deskop PC of vSphere ESX server and then upload to the ESXi server.

I would advise you to please all of the methods that is better than this one?

    Help, please.

    Kind regards

    Tommy

If you got a central storage you can move virtual machines between the two products with vMotion. Since you don't seem to have available vMotion, you pouvez use scp. SCP has nothing to do with ESX/ESXi products. It is a Linux/Unix program which is available in both servers.

So with the CPS, you need a little less.

    The syntax is like:

    SCP - r/path/to/vm/directory user@esxi:/path/to/new/location

    Concerning

  • Prerequisites hardware ESXi 4.0

I'm just getting started trying to kick the tires on a base install ESXi 4.0.  I read the first pages of the installation guide, but the layout was a bit confused as to what was required related controllers and hard disks.

Right now, I have a simple 1U rackmount server with a processor AMD Opteron 64 bit, 4 GB RAM and four SATA drives, which are managed by the integrated chipset (and probably not compatible HCL).  A single SATA HDD is currently in use as the Startup Windows 2003 disk.

Is a SATA or SAS RAID or necessary integrated chipset controller in

in order to install ESXi 4.0? And if yes, what is it needed for?  Sorry if this is a common question of noobie - I did some research via both Google and the forums but couldn't find answers.

Is a SATA controller or SAS RAID or chipset integrated required to install ESXi 4.0? And if yes, what is it needed for?

To try to answer your question more basically: no, a RAID controller is not necessary to install ESX.  If this machine is a production machine, then you'll want a hardware RAID controller, preferably one from the HCL list, because you'll want to part 'R' of RAID (Redundant Array of independent Drives) for a certain reliability.  But for a training machine, you can get away with a little downtime, so install ESX on even a hard drive is fine.

  • mix and match between vsphere 4.0 virtual machine and the hardware esxi 3.5 version run 4 on vsphere 4.

If you run a virtual machine on vsphere and not upgrade the virtual hardware, this has it problems?

My plan was to install on a server and then machines of vm, vsphere without upgrading the hardware on the machine to the virtual machine.

So I can then migrate the machines on my esxi 3.5 server if necessary.

Like many of you, I plan to update my test servers before upgrading my production servers.

If you have 3.x hosts in your cluster, and then I'd wait for upgrade virtual hardware and your guests VMware tools until all your ESX hosts are on the same generation.
