You wouldn't be wearing used underwear without washing (and money laundering it) first. It goes the same for used computers.
You can trust in the security of ANY computer used until you have formatted the hard drive & then did a clean install of Windows.
Follow the instructions in this post of mine in another forum (to-the-letter & in order! ) to return the computer to a State safe & functional: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=44636
If you need additional assistance with the clean install, please start a new thread in this forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-system
Note: The computer must not be connected to the internet or local networks (i.e. other computers) in its current state. All personal data (e.g., banking online & passwords credit card) must be considered at risk, if not already compromised.
Wish I had better news for you. Good luck!

Problem installing Vista Service Pack 1
Hello
I searched the internet for hours now and have found many people with the same problem but I couldn't find a solution.
I just bought software that requires Vista service pack 1 which I thought that I had already but I didn't so I installed it.
It goes through the whole process of installation and the last section after restarting, it goes to a black screen where it moves well as files or something but locks files 37898/94821 with the message:! 0xc01a001d! (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENETS\winners\x86...).If anyone has had this problem and know what to do.
My laptop is fine without service pack 1, but my new software needs to work so I have to download it.Thank you
Hello
To be honest, I never had any problem with my Vista updates
The Vista updates automatically every time when I m online and when new updates are availableHow have you tried to update the Vista operating system?
Have you downloaded the SP1 version first on the HARD drive or do you run an automatic update? If the automatic update does not work, try to download the SP1 version first, and then start the update procedure:
SP1 can be downloaded here:

Hello
Please join Microsoft Community where you can find the necessary information on Microsoft products!
You can not install Vista Service pack 2 and get the error with code 800f0a09 and the message that there are problems with the driver for dell latitude.
The problem may occur if some of the components of the update are corrupt.
What is the full error message that you receive?
I suggest you follow the steps mentioned below to check if the problem is with the update components:
Method 1: Reset the update components
See the site:
How to reset the Windows Update components?
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/971058
Warning: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/back-up-the-registry
Method 2: Run the system update readiness tool

Method 3: Turn off the antivirus software
See the site:
Disable the anti-virus software
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows-Vista/disable-antivirus-software
Important note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
I hope this helps. If the problem persists, let know us and we would be happy to help you.

Original title: problem after installing Windows Service Pack 3 on Windows XP Home Media edition pc
My pc runs Windows XP Home Media edition. I installed Windows Service Pack 3 successfully, or so I thought. Whenever I turn on my pc a box opens indicating "files which are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions." To maintain the stability of the system. Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Install your Windows XP Professional CD2. I don't have any Windows XP Professional CD that I use the Home Media Edition. If I press Cancel repeatedly, the window disappears to return with the same information, but ask me to install Windows XP Professional CD3. How can I stop this happening?
Hello
Step 1: I suggest you perform the SFC scan on the computer and check.
SFC tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of system files by using the correct versions.
To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
1. Click Start and type cmd in the box start the search.
2. right click on cmd in the list programs and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password or click on continue
3. at the command prompt, type the following line and press ENTER:sfc/scannow
Step 2: Also, look for error messages in the event viewer. If you find error messages after return the exact error message so that we can help you better.

I removed the laptop HD and scanned the computer and removed infections above.
Then I ran Windows Vista repair an Installation CD:Disc
Finally, the laptop worked normally and I could access the internet and update Microsoft Security Essentials.
However, I can't install Vista Service pack 2
I installed the fix pre-installation KB947821-v15 - x 86
I then installed the SP2 file Windows6 Installtion. 0-KB948465 - X 86
It finished up to 100% in step 3 after the restart, how she restored to SP1.
Everything worked OK then how to get SP1 to install it is a legacy of the aforementioned Trojan.
If a full Microsoft Office 2003 retail version is preinstalled on the computer when you bought it, Office 2003 will be reinstalled when you perform a clean Windows installation... as long as you use either drives OEM that came with the computer when you bought the hidden restore [1] or to partition the clean install.
If you have purchased & installed Office 2003 separately, you will be able to reinstall (after completing the clean install of Windows) using your Office 2003 CD-ROM.

Cannot install Vista Service Pack 2 (or closer to Windows 7)
Intel Core 2 Due CPU 8400 @ 3.00 GHZ w 2 GB RAM running (Windows Home Premium 64-bit). Service Pack 1 is installed.
Buy windows 7... tried last month upgrading Vista however the updater doesn't install not service pack 2. (KB948465). kept trying to install it but would get to the end and fail, and then seeks to restore to the previous version and I would then have to start in safe mode.Spent the last day trawl through all instances and followed each piece of advice out there, but still no joy.Manually install the update for Windows (KB947821). Uninstalled all antivirus & anti-spyware (AVG & Norton were both running). Ran System File Checker & Windows Install CleanUp and say that everything is OK.Each reboot the computer in order to start the installation it restarts. must select Safe mode with network... so going directly in "installation of the Service Pack: stage 3 of 3" arrives at 100% complete but then message comes up saying "Service pack do not have. '" Restoration of the changes. Do not turn off your computer. "Then"Configuring updates"and then to the normal login screen. When I connect and go update history it reads "Windows Vista Service Pace 2 for x 64-based systems (KB948465).» Details of the error 8007043 C Code.I then followed the instructions to install from the original DVD however after several hours I finally managed: 'the upgrade has failed. your previous version of WIndows is being restored. Do not restart your computer during this time. »Looking around and we found a lot of people with this issue but no solutions. Don't know what I can do now?Any help is greatly appreciated!
Best,Tom
Uninstalled all antivirus & anti-spyware (AVG & Norton were both running).I just noticed the above your first post. You had AVG and installed NAV and loading at startup? What were you doing thought? Not surprising that SP2 or Win7 upgrade would not install!
You must have an installed AV 1 and loading at startup. Chances are that AVG or Norton worked properly.
You have 2 choices:
1. back up your personal data (of which none should be considered reliable) and then format the HARD drive and do a clean install of Vista. or...
2. make a "custom (Advanced) installation" of Win7 and then delete %system%\Windows.old <=this>=this> . Do not even think to transfer the data from Vista to Win7. ~ Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (that is to say, mail, security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ WARNING: MS MVPs represent or work for Microsoft
