I'm writing a DLL with Labview which is called from a C++ application. However, when I run it, the next window opens briefly and then disappears.

Question for you: what is the level of service pack of the operating system XP?
If no or anything under service pack 3, you need to get to service pack 3.
Run WINVER to check the service pack level.
If your XP is the gold (no service pack) version or even the sp1 or sp2 windows (iirc) then automatic updates will not work.
You must have service pack 3, but so that you have either installed SP1a or SP2.
Please review carefully. Make a backup of your system offline media (before & after each service pack).
