Problem XP computer was crashing and getting not response

Just my parents have a tower XP, they got a certain number of years and have installed avast. During the last 6 months, according to my parents, the computer has been crashing. After investigation, I found that the symptoms were the taskbar (thin office) of freezing programs work but when a program closes it leaves an imprint on the office and the system stops responding. If you move a program he left multiple footprints on the desktop. After that I checked around including microsoft.com where he says to selective startup upwards to see if the problem stops occurring (which is); I then what they know then and do a normal start, but when it connected to the computer account, the task bar are in the same format it was in safe mode, avast does not work, no sound and mouse software will not be in service. My question is has anyone can help me to solve this, since I did the original worst problem and perhaps the problem of origin once my screw-up has been sorted.

Thanks for the help, the computer had some malware in it, but my dad has a companion at work to check and it seemes that I have disabled some windows processes that were not restart so that explains how I've done worse. The PC seems to work fine now.
