ProLiant ESXi management

On psysical servers, we install the HP System Managment software which allows us to verify material etc..  We are trying to enable write caching on the remote server - allows us to be able to do with HP Array Configuration Utility.

Is it still possible to ESXi, install the software on a virtual machine?  Or will we have to stop the server and boot from the CD to enable the write cache in the array Configuration utility?

This is not possible through a virtual machine — a virtual machine has no direct access to the physical hardware of the host.

There are two good methods to achieve what you are looking for:

1. a fully supported: with the ACU Offline (i.e., take down the host), see http://v-front.blogspot.com/2012/01/hard-to-find-hp-tools-offline-array.html

2. a not supported: by running the version Linux hpacucli in ESXi shell (without any host downtime!), see http://v-front.blogspot.com/2012/03/how-to-run-hp-online-acu-cli-for-linux.html

  • Question quick bonehead: ESXi management network?

    Hello

Didn't find it in the docs still... Managing IP network that is configured on the ESXi console:

Does it become part of any another logical network later, for example the VMotion network - or is it independent?

I'm trying to find out where to place; so far, I have:

    net iSCSI (private)

    NET vMotion (private)

NET management (LOM and other things)

    Main DvSwitch (public internet)

I assumed that the ESXi management IP is purely the hook to vCentre control one or several hosts - in which case, for us, it could logically go on the net public or management of the net, as long as he has a gig connectivity - would it be a reasonable assessment?

    Thank you very much

    Tim

The net vMotion fit into this net managemnet - or is it physically separate?

No, vMotion traffic moves the load of the computer virtual from one host to another. This traffic is not encrypted and so - for security reasons - the vMotion network must be a separate private network. Depending on your topology (1 GB, 10 GB), you can consider using cards dedicated for vMotion to provide the necessary bandwidth.

  • Virutal Center can work next to the Vmware ESXi management package

    Hi all

VMware currently has a promotion on Vmware ESXi management kit which is basically a Virutal Center Foundation license. That being said if you already have a virtual Center Server for all of your ESX servers could run a 2nd VMware ESXi management kit virtual Center Server for all your ESXi servers in parallel? or they will conflict with each other?

My understanding is you can run as many virtual servers Center like you license but you can have than 1 ESX Server any attached to 1 Virutal host at any given time.

We run 7 instances vCenter, so yes it is possible.  In addition, as you said a host ESX (i) can be managed by a single instance of vCenter.

  • Path to upgrade VMware ESXi Management Kit

I am interested in the offer of VMware ESXi Management Kit, but want to know if it will work with our plans for the future. I am particularly interested in the vCenter Foundation to allow us to track the performance of the server.

At the moment we have an ESXi server and could get a second in the near future. End of the year, however, we plan to invest in standard with HA or possibly Enterprise with VMware vMotion. That we will be able to use the Foundation of this package vCenter in this future configuration? The host licenses are only for ESXi and we will have to buy new ones? If we do not upgrade vCenter or host is a way of evolution at discount prices or we will have to buy new ones?

Budget is a problem then if we cannot reuse this in our final configuration so I won't be able to justify the cost.

    Thank you.

vCenter Foundation lets you connect an ESX host 6CPU value.  Is not serious ESXi or ESX.  If you use two connectors boxes, then as soon as you add a 4th host computer, you will need to update your vCenter license.  There is a reference number which allows a foundation upgrade to vCenter Standard.  What it is offhand, I don't know, but your dealer can help you with that.

In regard to 'free' with vCenter ESXi usage, you can not.  You must register (at least) Foundation for each ESX/ESXi host, you want to manage via vCenter.  Pay the $995 (list price) gets you the "VirtualCenter Agent" that is needed to connect to vCenter.  Note: You can install ESXi, play with it for as long as you want, but once you want to attach to vCenter, you will need the license... but there is No change to the ESXi host... you just load the license file in vCenter and you'll be all set.

    Hope that helps!

  • Using SSH Plugin for ESXi management agents

I know there is an old rule on that, but it doesn't really have a solution.

Restart the Agents of management with SSHCommand failed... https://communities.VMware.com/thread/436262

Looking for some advice on creating a workflow to restart esxi host management agents.

I configured the plugin SSH and authorized keys on the host computer. I am able to use the order workflow run SSH to place orders to the host.

However, by the way "/sbin/services.sh restart" to the workflow just hangs as stated in the thread referenced above.

Someone has managed to create a workflow to restart host principals?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have found that if you leave the workflows that can take up to an hour to finish. I will continue to dig in to see if I can find out why, but I've found a workaround. If you send stdout and stderr null the workflow ends as planned. restart of the /sbin/services.sh & > / dev/null

  • Make a little a bood by setting the switch 1 VLAN other than ALL - lost to ESXi management

    Hi all

As the title says, I mucked this up a little bit. I have two virtual switches configured, one with all my virtual machines on three cards attached network, and the other with the management and interface card NETWORK attached.

I thought that I have would combine the lot in a single switch and have the cards connected to the simple switch. Everything is VLAN'ed switch0 was set up at the trunk all the VLANS, as was the segment of management - although this should be in one VLAN specific. I've updated the Switch0 simply use the VLAN segment management and connectivity quickly lost the device to ESXi. All virtual machines on their VLAN specific are OK on the second switch.

How can I return a network access ESXi?

Console access is available, but I seem to have lost Out Light control will have to physically go to the machine.

    What a prick!

    Chris

Couple of questions to understand the actions performed by you:

I've updated the Switch0 simply use the VLAN management segment, and quickly lost connectivity to the device ESXi--> do you mean WHAT VLAN ID changed to 18 0 (none)?

The virtual switch was set to pass all THE VLAN the Port VMkernal (Management Network Group) has been updated with "All THE VLAN", I went it to the VLAN (18)-->, you gave VLAN ID as 18 and your single NIC - VMNIC 0 is interconnection to VLAN 18?

In simple words - you physical NIC 0 visibility to VLAN 18 or not (you will have to ask Admin network) - double else check your wiring asks that you made at the time of Installation

For this kind of connectivity issues - you need problems like RSA/ILO/DRAC remote console based on the style of the material.

    Hi team,

I just checked on my server has built no 799733, and there are many cirats for 2012 for the patches. I mainly worked on new installations of ESXi. It's the first time I try picture embedded custom patch, can someone help me with this? How can I check the patches for this server? and any other procedure for these images? Thank you very much.

You use the Update Manager? In any case, I noticed that you run the 5.1 GA ESXi and you can fix/upgrade using different ways, for example, to import the new custom HP ISO for the 5.1 version of ESXi Update 2 and/or add the repository of CV to your manager to update like this: http://www.ivobeerens.nl/2012/07/17/add-hp-drivers-vib-to-vmware-update-manager-vum/

  • 5.5 ESXi management

    Hello

I installed a new free 5.5 ESXi server.

Before I always used vSphere Client to manage my VMs.

But in ESXi 5.5, I get the message that I can only use vSphere Client for 60 days.

How can I manage my VMs after 60 days?

    Best regards

Hardware Version vmx-10 is not compatible with vSphere Client (c# version) and you will need vcenter Server with vSphere Web Client to manage this virtual machine.

Anyway there are alternatives to manage vmx - 10, here's a good: 5.5 vSphere: manage the VM Hardware Version 10 with VMware Workstation. PowerShell and PowerCLI Blog

  • 5.1 ESXi management no connectivity network with two network adapters connected

IBM H chassis equipped with blades HS22

Blades use Broadcom 5709 s dual gigabit NIC

ESXi 5.0, system worked very well with both NICs connected (static IP) in network management parameters (able to ping in and out). Completed the upgrade to ESXi 5.1 preserving VMFS datastore. After the reboot, management network shows two NICs connected to static IP always assigned but I have not any (impossible in our out ping) network connectivity. If I disable one of the network cards and restart the management network, I can immediately ping inside and out.

I took a spare blade and tested by passage of 5.0 to 5.1 and 5.1 installation clean, the two producers same results. A host with two active network cards 5.0 (if static IP or DHCP) can ping inside and out. A host with two active network cards 5.1 (if static IP or DHCP) can not ping in our out. 5.1 host cannot obtain DHCP address, but fails to APIPA.

I found the problem. For some reason, both switches must be actively connected on the same network for observed networks provide correct information for the collection.

  • Network down ESXi management.

    Hi all

Well, my problem is because of my attitude adventerous ... After the discussion with one of my friends I have installed a switch distributed and selected link rising adapter an ESXi vmnic0, it served the vswitch more vmk0 group of ports deal with traffic management, to my surprise, the operation succeeded! (I thought it would give me an error similar to what we get in ESX cannot remove the last adapter to uplink of the vSwitch having the service console). This eliminated my ESXi off the grid. I can't ping and all I have is the mode of tech support. Here, I can't use vicfg because they are not available in ESXi

Is it possible that I can change the settings and connect vmnic0 return to vSwitch0? Would be great as well if I can be explained why ESXi allows same to disconnect the last map uplink connected to the vswitch (containing vmk0), which is very destructive and not allowed in ESX?

Thanks a lot for your answer in advance.

    MAK

You can fix with the esxcfg-vswitch command command line:

    http://www.jume.nl/esx4man/man8/esxcfg-vswitch.8.html

But you need access to the console.

  • Remot ESXi management

Hi guys I recently installed esxi 4.1 on one of my local machines is an everything works well except because I have a crap provider intrnet and router adsl netgear DG834PN trash I can't connect to my home network by simply using my external IP and I was wandering if anyone knew a system just such a (LogMeIn) where I can install in my rig esxi and be able to access and manage my Server from anywhere in the world

You could set up a VM on the host, install the top vSphere Client, make sure that you can manage the host with it and then enable RDP on the virtual machine. Enable the port forwarding on your router to dlink (ie) to the IP address of the virtual machine and test... I also suggest using a service like (free) offerings of dyndns.com to use a normal url to connect to the installation of your home. Install their agent, or have your router put their list up-to-date, and you're good...

I use the method of a vCenter Server RDP (on my ESXi host) in my lab at home environment. Enable port forwarding on my router Linksys (WRT610N) to the IP address of the Server vCenter when I think that I'll need to plug in the configuration of the House... Otherwise, I omit the port forwarding. I also use many of the services (now) of dnydns.com to make sure that my web and ftp servers are available to no matter what my audience/host IP address changes at...

Establishing an AC DC to use for authentication, I suggest... Also use at least a password (you can use something like passutils.exe to check the strength of password) for this account and make sure that your network is secure also.

I would NOT install anything on the host directly (not that you could under ESXi)...

  • log of ESXi management

    Hi all

I searched in google and in the VMTN forums for the best way to manage ESXi hosts. Soon I will have approximately 100 esxi host and I wonder what tool should I use for this?

    1. VI client - clear

    2. powershell vSphere - mass, changing, checking configuration, reports, etc.

    3. How to manage ESXi record if troubelshoting something similar to the cat and tail or tail f of the ESX version?

    4. Hot to play with esxcfg-* commands without ssh access?

    Thanks in advance

    Artur

If you have worked with the classic ESX Service Console and are familiar with all the esxcfg-* commands, then manage ESXi hosts will be very similar and you can use vCLI which contains the majority of the esxcfg-* commands you need. Take a look at the documentation for more examples. You can also simply download appliance of vMA in VMware that includes vCLI as well as other utilities including syslog tool called viloggermanagement. You can also use an existing or set up a new syslog server and all your logs of your host is headed to centralize the system for debugging purposes.

On the top of vCLI and vMA, you can use PowerCLI. The tools that you will decide to use to manage your infrastructure will really depend on your level of comfort if it is located in Windows/Linux. If you have worked in the classic Service Console, tools like vCLI/vMA will be familiar and fairly simple to use (vCLI note can be installed on a Linux and Windows system). If you are more comfortable on a Windows platform, PowerCLI is also a great tool to help automate and manage your environment.

You look at all these options and do some research and find what works best and see where the limits can lie to your environment.

    Good luck
