Path to upgrade VMware ESXi Management Kit

I am interested in the offer of VMware ESXi Management Kit, but want to know if it will work with our plans for the future. I am particularly interested in the vCenter Foundation to allow us to track the performance of the server.

At the moment we have an ESXi server and could get a second in the near future. End of the year, however, we plan to invest in standard with HA or possibly Enterprise with VMware vMotion. That we will be able to use the Foundation of this package vCenter in this future configuration? The host licenses are only for ESXi and we will have to buy new ones? If we do not upgrade vCenter or host is a way of evolution at discount prices or we will have to buy new ones?

Budget is a problem then if we cannot reuse this in our final configuration so I won't be able to justify the cost.

Thank you.

vCenter Foundation lets you connect an ESX host 6CPU value.  Is not serious ESXi or ESX.  If you use two connectors boxes, then as soon as you add a 4th host computer, you will need to update your vCenter license.  There is a reference number which allows a foundation upgrade to vCenter Standard.  What it is offhand, I don't know, but your dealer can help you with that.

In regard to 'free' with vCenter ESXi usage, you can not.  You must register (at least) Foundation for each ESX/ESXi host, you want to manage via vCenter.  Pay the $995 (list price) gets you the "VirtualCenter Agent" that is needed to connect to vCenter.  Note: You can install ESXi, play with it for as long as you want, but once you want to attach to vCenter, you will need the license... but there is No change to the ESXi host... you just load the license file in vCenter and you'll be all set.

Hope that helps!

  • Virutal Center can work next to the Vmware ESXi management package

    Hi all

VMware currently has a promotion on Vmware ESXi management kit which is basically a Virutal Center Foundation license. That being said if you already have a virtual Center Server for all of your ESX servers could run a 2nd VMware ESXi management kit virtual Center Server for all your ESXi servers in parallel? or they will conflict with each other?

My understanding is you can run as many virtual servers Center like you license but you can have than 1 ESX Server any attached to 1 Virutal host at any given time.

We run 7 instances vCenter, so yes it is possible.  In addition, as you said a host ESX (i) can be managed by a single instance of vCenter.

    By default, it creates

    Standard switch: vSwitch0

    Management network

    The VM network

Best practice is to remove the network from the VM. then remove this VM network

Recreate the motion switch and the VMotion porgrgroup

Re-create VM networks and interaction with all VM and VLANDIDs networks

  • Upgrade VMWare ESXi VMware vSphere Hypervisor 4.0.0

    Hello

Is it possible to upgrade 398348 for the new VMware vSphere Hypervisor, the free version of VMWare ESXi 4.0.0?

How would I go all upgrade without losing the virtual machines that are currently in the data store?

VMware ESXi hypervisor and share binaries of same exact. It is only the license key that locks or unlocks various features. Then switch between editions is basically just replace the license key.

Because the binaries are the same for all editions, for example the 4.1 version update procedure is the same too. Just follow the link DSTAVERTS the Guide to upgrade (search for vihostupdate).

  • Path to upgrade to ESXi

How will I know if new version is available for ESXi? I have version IBM of ESXi, how to move to the new version if it is released?

    You have a few options:

1 VUM (VMware Update Manager) have it download the update, create the base line and apply

2 VMware Infrastructure Update. You can install this component when you install the client. You must download the patch on patch from VMware website and then apply it to your host.

    3. get new media provider (IBM) flash. It is often difficult.

The bits that are specific to your server provider are stored in a file named oem.tgz which must be kept for an update. We know not if/how/when VMware never plans to update the oem.tgz or if these bits are just supposed to still exist as-is.

  • Upgrade VMware Tools in ESXi

    Hello

I can't find how to upgrade vmware ESXi 4.0 to latest tools, or is it automatically upgrade itself to the latest version? I mean not for the guest OS but for ESXi. So when I install VMware Tools on a new guest OS I get the latest VMware tools.

    Thank you

    Hello

You need to update your ESXi host, usually new updated comes with its own updated VMware tools. Use the Manager to update to patch/update your ESXi hosts. Once the host is update/upgrade VMware tools in the virtual machines will also have the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version.

    Hope this information is helpful

  • The upgrade of the host, VMware ESXI 4.1

    Hello

I am running a host VMware ESXi 4.1. It seems that VMware claims now this product VMware vSphere Hypervisor (am I right?). Was it a name change purely marketing, or they introduce new functions as well? Is VSphere Hypervisor a more recent version of ESXi

Is there a tool to upgrade VMware ESXi 4.1 for newer versions (no matter if their output yet or not, just wondering about the upgrade in general)?

    Thanks in advance!

Don't worry, it's all the same. You have the same binary files for all editions of ESXi, it is only the license key that locks or unlocks features. I think that the main reason why VMware decided to call ESXi free edition "Hypervisor" was because many people were confused that ESXi is free or not.

There are two upgrade options ESXi. For the first, you must have a licensed version of vCenter Server, which offers the "Update Manager". The second is to use the command line utility "vihostupdate".

In addition, you can take a look at http://www.vm-help.com/esx41/Patching_4.1_with_the_host_update_utility.php

I have an ESXi 3.5.0 Server and I am considering upgrading to VMware vSphere Hypervisor 4.1.

    -Is the good upgrade?

-I can upgerade in place, leaving the VM on the server?

Is there a document describing how to upgrade right?

-As some of the VMS are business critical, how to eliminate or mitigate the risks of problems prossible during the upgrade process?

    Concerning

    Mario

You can follow the upgrade guide:

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vSphere4/R41/vsp_41_upgrade_guide.PDF

You can keep existing VMs, but a backup is suggested.

A suggested path could be the first upgrade to 4.0 and 4.1:

  • esxi free upgrade to VMware vSphere Essentials Kit

Hi we are a small company with a new 1 and 1 old server sent us this question for the Department sales of vmware but have had no response.

We have two questions we hope that someone has had a few experiences with.

Currently we use free on our new server esxi5 if we buy VMware vSphere Essentials Kit

    1. is it just a matter of the conclusion of the license in the free version of esxi to give it functionality increase so there is not need to reinstall things?

2 if we have VMware vSphere Essentials Kit it would allow us to use tools such as quest vRanger pro or Acronis vmProtect for backup and replication connection.

It would be much cheaper than the use of VMware vSphere Essentials Kit pro and seems to do the same job.

    Thank you

    Welcome to the community!

Is it just a matter of the conclusion of the license in the free version of esxi to give it functionality increase so there is not need to reinstall things?

Yes enter vSphere Essentials Kit License keys will unlock the applicable for this Kit features, re - install ESXi will be not be held

If we have VMware vSphere Essentials Kit it would allow us to use tools such as quest vRanger pro or Acronis vmProtect for backup and replication connection.

vSphere Essentials Kit inclused vStorage APIs for Data Protection so you should be good to use the third-party data protection software

  • LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager on VMware ESXi 4.0

    Hi guys,.

We tried to install on VMware ESXi 4.0 MegaRAID Storage Manager (IBM x 3550 M2) and it uses Controller RAID MegaRAID SAS 8808E to monitor the hard disk status but could not be able to install and it returned the error as attaché

We followed the procedure as shown in the following ibm Web site

1.6 MegaRAID Manager storage system to a VMWare ESX Server

Follow these steps to install the on a MegaRAID Storage Manager

    VMWare ESX Server:

    1. download the latest MSM to ibm.com

    2 unzip the and copy MSM_linux_installer - 501.01.tar.gz on a USB key.

    3. from the ESX Server, in the console root, type the following command

to identify the USB device: fdisk-l

    4. type the following command: mount/mnt/dev / {name of the USB device}

    5. type the following command: cd/mnt

    6. type the following command to copy MSM_linux_installer - 501.01.tar.gz in the occupied Palestinian territories

    b enter 2 for VMware 4.0 install

    12. Select the storlib option

    a. Enter n If you want to use the Inbox storlib driver

    b. Enter y if you want to install the storlib delivered with MSM

IBM recommends 'y' is selected for use packed with MSM, storlib by selecting "n" can

cause some features of MSM does not function properly
