Properties of Windows gives bad folder size

Hello
Thanks for the help in advance.

I have a file (actually several) who give the right size in MB. Right-click on a folder and choosing Properties opens a dialog box that has the size only 11.5 MB (12,163,992 bytes). Finally, I have checked 12,163,992 bytes = 11.6 MB. Why windows does not report an incompatible format.

I need to understand where windows obtained the 11.5 MB of.
Thank you

PS I would send a screenshot of the dialog properties but could not understand how to insert an image in this forum.

I suggest the reason logic is that Vista (and XP and I bet it's still attack a problem in Windows 7 if I have no computer to test on) is one of the most complex programs in the world and that there are a lot of bugs in the program and it is very likely, it is simply one of these bugs.  Maybe someone typed 1034 instead of 1024 in a part of the formula and nobody has never fished it and nobody has ever reported it as a bug (or the report has been ignored or not enough priority to address).  Maybe if you report it as a bug you might get some kind of answer or answer (although I suspect that never hear you what anyone on this subject).  Here's where to report a bug:http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactbug/en-us.

I found the following that may help (or keep things as confused as they are) ofhttp://www.elivermore.com/conversions.htm:

Microsoft Windows (including XP) uses binary formats when specifying the file sizes and disk sizes.  Is 1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024 * 1024 bytes.  When you view the properties of a hard drive, both the decimal and binary numbers are displayed, with the comma being entirely appear without prefixes.  For example, a drive announced that 60 GB could appear as:
Capacity: 55.8 GB 60,003,868,672 bytes.
The decimal number is the exact number of bytes.  It's a bit over 60 billion, because they are rarely built to an exact decimal value.  The 55.8 GB would be 55.8 * 230.  It is rounded to 3 significant digits.

That's why your drive 60G displayed only 55.8 GB.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

  • By default, Finder bad file & size

I have problems with the Finder in the Dock not open the correct file and remembering its size. I hope someone can help with this problem. Here's what happens:

When I open the Finder (click) the icon in the Dock, it's always default to opening a file it should not (Scrivener). It should open all my files as shown in Finder preferences. In addition, the window is Itsy-Bitsy, and I have to drag the corner to enlarge each time that dragged size does not save for the next time the window is opened. However... If I right click on the same icon in the Dock, then select new Finder window, Finder opens in the window of the correct size and all my files. Finder is also open to its appropriate size and the folder, if I select in Finder > Go toolbar. Shift + Cmd + F opens the size and the appropriate folder.

    Thanks for your help.

Go to your 'Go' menu Finder, hold the option key and choose the library. Then go to the preferences and trash folder these files:

    com Apple.Finder.plist

    com Apple.sidebarlists.plist

Then, restart or log in and again.

(You will have to reset some finder prefs the way you like them).

  • file and folder size

Hi, I'm working on a new computer Sunrise and execution including obtaining my backups before day of the load on my new computer.  When comparing a few folders on the hard drive of my main computer, last night made backups don't always correspond to the size and number of files, at least in some cases, but not all.

I use XP on the old system and my backup hard drive is a Seagate.  There are plenty of room on my Seagate for even more data.

For example, my main computer indicates a file like: 168 concerts and 47781 files while the backup shows 167 concerts and 45623.  Another folder on my main computer will display: 657 megs and 45 files while the backup shows 647 megs and the same 45 files.

Can you explain this for me and if there is a way to check that all my information is actually saved properly?  Also, would you recommend the reset of my program to select all the files I want to save as a new start and then, by running another backup backup?  Thank you

There may be several things happening here.

First, make sure you that you compare 'size' of the folder on a drive in the folder 'size' on the other disk and not "size of the folder on the drive."

"Size on disk" is very often not the same as the 'size' (it's usually larger).  This is because the files are stored in "clusters" of a fixed number of bytes.  There is only one file per cluster and so there is almost always unused space.  This is called "soft"

Cluster size represents the smallest amount of disk space that can be used to hold a file. When the size of the files does not come out to an even multiple of the cluster size, extra space must be used to hold the file (up to the next multiple of the cluster size). On the typical disk partition, the average amount of space that is lost in this way can be calculated using the equation (cluster size) / 2 * (number of files).

For example, suppose that you have 12 ounces of water and only 10 ounces cups.  You need two cups - 20 ounces of "storage" - to hold all the water, and one of them is essentially empty.  On the other hand, if you had 4 oz. cups, you would need three cups - 12 oz of "storage" - and would have no unused space.

Cluster size differs between the various files used by Windows systems.  Most use facilities XP NTFS file system, which has a cluster size default to 4 096 bytes (4 KB) for partitions up to 16 TB.  The FAT file system on the other hand, uses a clusters of 512 bytes and 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 KB depending on the size of the partition.

External number of readers is preformatted using the FAT file system.  So if you compare "size on disk" and the internal drive uses NTFS and the backup drive uses FAT, there almost certainly will be a different size "on the disc" between the two.

In your first example (168 GB file), it seems that you can not have guaranteed some hidden or system files.  What software do you use to make the backup?

Most of the good software backup has an option to "check".  Exactly what he is "verified" may be different for different applications, but if it is available in the software you have, you have to use.

  • In the detail view folder sizes. What Microsoft has to do not display a list of folder sizes in the detail view? I don't want to post this in the comments...

What Microsoft has to do not display a list of folder sizes in the detail view?  I want to just see my folders in the list view and know how big each folder is!  Is this a lot to ask?  Are you (MS) collusion with folder size software companies so that they can sell me something that should simply be in Details view? Is it because it could slow down my experience of 'Windows' that is not so great anyway.

I don't like what MS has to say.  This is not a plea (or tip) for them to fix. I just want to know why they avoided (5 180 000 results according to Google) millions of requests for this feature Microsoft Users: why do you think that Microsoft has deliberately chosen to omit a column of 'folder size' seen in the window?

Original title: Back Up system - disk and check

Since this is a secondary drive chkdsk/r can be run without having to reboot.   Close all the programs that can access training and and when you run chkdsk say yes to "remove this volume first...". ».  This will cause no harm.  Although not strictly necessary, I recommend you to reboot once completed the disk check.   This will solve any problem related to the file handles.
If chkdsk/r reports bad sectors, you should replace the disk.

  • 11g database more and bigger "app" folder size...

    Hi Experts,

my 11g R1 database "app" folder size is 13.1 GB. I run a pl/sql code today which took place for 5 hours and it has increased the size of the database... the plsql code add about 800 million lines in a table... I soften this table and there is no change in the size of the "app" folder... and I see that C:\app\Administrator\oradata\orcl is 9.2 GB and a C:\app\Administrator\oradata\orcl\UNDOTBS01 file. DBF is 6.4 GB...

    1. What is this oradata folder?
    2. What is the use of UNDOTBS01. DBF file? Can I delete it?
    3. how to reduce the size of my "app" folder with on deleting data useful (i.e. something like "Disk Cleanup" in windows)?

    Thanks in advance,

    DK

There is no record of the table, but in any case, you mentioned that you are not a db guy is not serious. If you add the data file would increase. If you remove it, it will not be back and he called fragmentation (think of Gruyère, the holes in it is the fragmentation). You need to fragment the tablespace/datafile to get rid of this lost space.
