Question about time-keepin in virtual machines

Hello

I know that VMware suggests to use time between the VM and ESX hosts, with Vmware tools. My question is simple: How can I disable the time between domain-Memberservers (W2K3) and Domaincontrollers in order to synchronize exclusively between the host and the VM? What kind of config, I have to do on Windows boxes to prevent time from the field?

Thanks for your advice... Andy

Disable time service windows and activate the time synchronization in the VMware tools.

  • Question about backup / restore of virtual machines

    Hi all

My guard speaks that she always save a Virtual Machine on removable USB memory before she did something to her, in case she should he recovered quickly.

She does refer in terms of backup? and how she restore from USB flash memory card?

And I've read a few articles on the backup and restore VMware, but nothing like she said.

    Any ideas would be great.

    See you soon

You cannot use a USB storage connected to your host to make backups.

    Buy a compatible NAS instead.

  • What is the interval of time between the virtual machine Linux and ESXi host synchronization?

I have ESX5.0 with a centos6 installed on this linux virtual machine.

After the installation of vmware for Linux virtual machine tools, I activated the time synchronization between the virtual machine linux and ESXi host through vmware-toolbox-cmd.

I wonder what is the interval of time between the virtual machine linux and ESXi host synchronization? If I quickly time OS system, when the OS system time will sync back to the ESXi host?

    According to http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/Timekeeping-In-VirtualMachines.pdf:

By default, the demon checks the guest only once per minute operating system clock.

However, depending on whether the guest is behind or in front of the result is different. So, please read the section "periodic synchronization" (at least) in the document mentioned above.

  • How can we change the start-up time in a virtual machine

I need to update the delay start for my virtual machines so that each time that the virtual machine is under voltage or reset, the boot order to 5000 milliseconds delay.  The default is 0 milliseconds.

Can someone tell me what command (s) I need to use for this script.  I only meed the correct syntax and I'll be able to write the script to change the default settings on all my VMs currents (I've already updated my model so that the new virtual machines have the value of 5000 milliseconds).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    IMMIAnt

To set the delay for all your vm is 5,000 milliseconds with PowerCLI you can use:

    $spec = new-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineConfigSpec

    $spec.bootOptions = new-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineBootOptions

    $spec.bootOptions.bootDelay = 5000

    Get - VM | {ForEach-Object

    $_. ExtensionData.ReconfigVM_Task ($spec)

What kind of sound can reproduce via Remote Desktop if the server has no sound card? Only the default Windows 2003 sounds

  • Question about the configuration of virtual computer file and the working VM location

I noticed one of my virtual machines had two data warehouses listed under "Items" in the vSphere Client.

After some research autour, I found the virtual machine files are in the correct data store, but the 'VM-configuration file' and 'Place of work VM' are in another data store.

Can I combine all in the same database?   I'd rather have the config and the workplace on ma who has a lot of main storage.  For some reason, the configuration file and the location of work were created on a local storage on my host.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

    David Moore

You can use Storage vMotion to migrate only the virtual machine configuration file to the desired location, just start the wizard of vMotion and storage step 'Select the data store', click Advanced, and you will see the option to select a new destination for the configuration file data store.

You have just a typing mistake in the name of metrics here ("numbertread" instead of "numberread"):

    where {$_.} MetricId - eq 'drive. numbertread.summation '} | `

  • Newbie question: list the Configuration of virtual machines and data warehouses

    Hello

I'm new on using powercli how to list all virtual machines in a certain data center, their memory, Procs and what data warehouses they are on.

I know you can use get - vm | Select-object name, NumCPU MemoryMB but if I add DatastoreIdList as well, it doesn't seem to work.  What Miss me

    Thank you very much

    Laurence

    That's right, you could do

    Get-VM MyVM | Select Name,@{N="DS";E={[string]::join(',',($_.datastoreidlist|%{(Get-View -Id $_).Name}))}},Description |
        Export-Csv "C:\test.csv" -NoTypeInformation -UseCulture

Just look at whether the separator for CSV is be a comma in your culture, you probably need to adjust the separator in the Join method!

  • Question ML110 conversion to a virtual machine

    Hello

I have an old server ML110 running Windows 2003 Standard. Instead of upgrade, I don't expect a P2V, but I had a few problems. When it converts all data are intended through fine however it will not start the operating system and get the message 'Operating System Not Found'. In my view, it is a problem to do with the disc of BONE being not marked as active, but I can't not making it so. The original server looks like a mirror of software with the operating system drive and DATA in dynamic disks.

I took the steps to date...

Convert server - does not start

Converted and then converted again - server does not start

The disks attached to a Windows XP machine and the active drive system - does not start.

When I joined the OS disk to the XP client I could see all the data, including the boot.ini file.

Some tips on what to try next?

You have a Vista/Windows 7 / Windows 2008 DVD/ISO? If so, start the virtual machine on in recovery mode (booting from the DVD/ISO), open a command prompt and use diskpart to activate the boot partition.

If this is insufficient, attach (create) a new virtual disk to another Windows 2003 (or Windows XP) Server VM, format in Explorer and copy the boot.ini, ntldr, ntdetect.com in the disk image. Edit the boot.ini file, make sure that it contains the delay option and copy the line of boot partition to be able to select different partitions to boot from. Once that done, use this floppy disk image to start the converted virtual computer.

    Example of a boot.ini file:

    [boot loader]
    timeout = 30
    default = multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (1) \WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    "multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (1) \WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Server 2003 "/ fastdetect

    "multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Server 2003 "/ fastdetect

    "multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (3) \WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Server 2003 "/ fastdetect

  • newbie question - vmdk transfer on another virtual machine on the same host

    Hello

can I transfer a vmdk 1 vm to another and mount it?

I have a vm of windows server with a 2nd virtual hard drive that has data on it. rather than to make a copy of file in a file to another virtual machine with a 2nd hard drive and then delete the second original disk, could I just disassemble and remove the second hard drive to the original virtual machine and then attach it as an extra hard drive to the second vm?

    pointers would be appreciated.

y at - it no problem tell move a ntfs disk to a file for example linux server

Mode not read-only (but you lose the NTFS and share permissions).

  • Question about time Dimension Type Format

Hello, I've created a repository and I see that my time dimension has a strange format type. When I'm in answers page and click on the year and click "Show results", I see all my years of my database, but in this format:
    2.006
    2007
    2,008
    ...

    And I want to see:
    2006
    2007
    2008 (no period separator)

And also if I'm going to filter my highlights of the year and I click on allchoices... it shows not my years as:
    2006.00
    2007.00
    2008.00

    Everyone knows about it?

    Thank you very much

First check the data type you specified for the year column in the physical layer of the repository. Is this other thing as integers?

  • Equium M50-164: Question about timer use & battery fan

    Hello!!

Just put your hands on my laptop equium m50-164 today and I wanted to clarify a few issues

    first of all,

I flashed my bios with the latest version and after restarting, fan kicks at full power and has not extinguished until I put the laptop in standby mode, this seemed to fix the problem but fan seems suddenly in much more than compared to before, fortunately the fan isn't the one 100% , but more like 15-20% every 30 seconds or one minute then goes into silent mode the fan does not reach 100%, unless I have do a reboot :),.

I know the fan will accelerate faster based on the use of the processor (thermal) etc. but is this normal? I talked to support and they wanted me to have an immediate replacement, but I said that I would wait a few days to see if she could calm :)

and finally looking at the electricity meter and other software tools there seems to be no calibration of the battery, with previous laptops, I noticed that numeric calculations are made based on the use of the battery and time [i.e. a timer] but with this laptop that I kind find a timer - I would of thought tha any computer laptop has this facility today!

    any advice would help

    Hi ephid0r

If the Toshiba service makes an instant replacement if you should take it.
Maybe there's something wrong with the hardware or software.

But as Feliks has suggested, you must first reinstall the Toshiba Power Manager.
This utility is responsible for the CPU and the cooling module activations.

PS: The time of battery life indication occurs if you move the cursor over the icon of standby power.

  • Question about Ram upgrade on a machine Satellite A110

    Hello

I wonder if I can replace my 512 MB PC 4200 Mhz SO - DIMM DDRII with a 2 GB PC 5300 Mhz SO - DIMM DRRII I to my Satellite A110?

    Thanks in advande.

    / Mattias

The laptop can be upgraded up to 2 GB. You can use the module of RAM 1 GB max in a memory slot!

The laptop seems to support FSB 533 MHZ and so I should be possible to use the 533 Mhz memory modules too

  • A question about the virtual processors in the prompt

    Dear Sir

I have a general question about the number of virtual processors in the guest system.

    I use VMware ESXi 4.0.

Say if my physical host has only 2 cups carrots (with or without HT should be the same), then is - it true that I can only attribute 2 virtual processors per virtual machine?

Is it possible to give 4, 8 virtual processors in virtual machines?

In my drop down menu I can NOT choose more than 2 virtual processors per virtual machine, I want to just make sure that it is not the problem of license.

    Thank you very much.

So the general rule is the number of vcpus don't CAN NEVER exceed the number of physical processors. Is this correct?

Replace "physical cpu" by "physical cores" and you are right, because a vCPU is mapped to a kernel. For example, you can assign 4 vCPU with a Quad-Core processor.

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. If you would be able to map 2 vCPU to the base, the vCPUs had to wait for them all the time because the physical kernel can simply perform an action at a time, why you would decrease the performance of your virtual machine by setting 2 vCPUs.

It is not changed in vSphere 5.

  • Question about CPU Ready time %

    Hello Vmware experts.

Small question about time loan cpu in esxtop. I have a couple of the virtual machine that has been entrusted to 4 vCPU. When you view their stats in esxtop they indicate the highest term of loan from CPU. I was wondering if this figure is the result of adding the ready time of each vCPU? For example, a 4 x vCPU VM with ready time of 10%, does it really mean 2.5% by vCPU? Should I be concerned about ready time of 10%? I read that the multiple assignment of vCPU can unnecessarily cause time CPU ready. How others decide on how many vCPU they must assign to VM here?

OK, just realised that was more than just a small question... anyway, would be great if someone could make all this a bit clearer for me.

    Thank you

BTW, my hosts CPU usage to sit at an average of 25%.

In vSphere they eased the scheduling of multiple vCPU co even more so that only the vCPU who got ahead of the rest is stopped.  It is always advisable to start with a single vCPU and work your way up if necessary.

In esxtop you can use the e command to extend the CPU statistics.  In several vCPU machines this will let you see the playing time of each CPU (which should add until you have seen earlier) and it will also allow you to see the % used for each processor.  This should allow you to see if the two vCPU are properly used in a box of vCPU multi.   I had also the CSTP % field shows which is the stop of co and will give you an indiciation of how often vCPU on the machine stopped to allow the other CPU to stand.

Great pdf on the CPU scheduler in vSPhere can be found here http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/perf-vsphere-cpu_scheduler.pdf
