Question of Storage vMotion

Hi all

Newbie VMware admin here, I hope it's an easy question. I have several boxes of Microsoft SQL I need to move the drive on which the operating system is installed on, they have all RDM attached when I try a storage vmotion, it looks like her wanting to move all the drives instead of one, i have never attempted to move a system with RDM attached to it, but I need to get away from this former storage we have urged. All tips are appreciated thank you!

Thank you

You can migrate both at the same time, even if you choose a different destination.

You're welcome and don't forget brand useful and/or correct answers.

  • Storage vMotion issue License - license of moving between ESX Hosts 4.1?

I have a question about Storage vMotion with ESX 4.1 license.

One of my environments ESX 3.5 existing consists of 10 ESX 3.5 hosts - 8 ESX 3.5 servers Standard and 2 ESX 3.5 Enterprise servers.  I use a centralized license server (I think that's the correct term).

I found that I can "move" the vMotion (and vMotion) Storage capacity of two of my 10 servers that only two of them are enabled for vMotion, both.  I do this by topic under VI Client-> select the host ESX-> Configuration-> network-> properties-> VMkernel-> Edit-> toggle the box "VMotion" activated-> OK.   I guess that by doing this, that I'm actually just spend my licenses 'ESX Enterprise' between the hosts.

Be able to run Storage vMotion on one or two guests at a time is a lot for a few times a year I need to reconfigure my back-end storage.

    Two Questions:

    1. this use is technically legal in a perspective of VMware licenses?

    2. now, I'm looking to upgrade to ESX 4.1 and wonder if I'll be able to keep doing this?  I have read that ESX 4.x got rid of the centralized server license model, so not sure if I could 'move' licenses around like that... In fact since vMotion is now included in Standard Edition, I guess I could 'pull out' through a license only one ESX Enterprise server in order to obtain the license of storage vMotion.

I let my support/subscription lapse for as long it is cheaper to purchase new licenses rather than paying for support costs with retroactive effect on my existing licenses.   The price difference between Standard and Enterprise is large (3 times the cost) that I don't think I can swing is business licenses for all of my guests past the bean counters, where the reason for this post.

    Reflections and comments?

Each host has a license key number. You can apply a new license key to a host, and it is immediately activated. I guess you would be technically violate licensing for seconds as a license number was recorded at two hosts. There is a place in the vSphere client to "assign a new license key to this host. When a license key has been assigned, it remains as a choice, then you can simply choose the functionality licensed one and below the other.

  • question of vMotion and storage vMotion

I have everything set, UCS 5108, ESXi host, VMs, I don't have a SAN connection yet... My question is if I can enable vMotion? Let's say I have a cluster in vCenter, within this group, I have attached two ESXi host, win2008 VM in an ESXi and running, I can migrate (using vMotion) as win2008 VM to an another ESXi without connection SAN?

How storage vMotion to an ESXi host hardrive to an another ESXi host hardrive? Is this possible?

Note: I have not connection SAN in this configuration

One of the requirements for vMotion is shared storage that would allow visibility between source and destination ESXi hosts. (SAN, iSCSI or NFS).

  • Basic question Storage VMotion

    Hello friends,

I'm new to ESX and learning as well as my friend.

We have a lab test... configuration in which we have 2 servers now., 1 HP 4 GB of RAM, an enormous amount of processor P3 HARD drive. We run more vCenter server as a virtual machine and some VM is running... Now we got a new server Dell with 8 GB of RAM, dual P4 Q-core... and we want to move those VMS to Dell.

For this I'll have to install ESX on the new server and put it in VCenter.

The two servers are not on a dedicated storage, I don't know if I'll be able to use SVMotion to transfer these VM to the new server.

    Is this Possible?

Thanks for your quick responses of friends.

Storage VMotion is a transparent in another data store migration while the virtual machine still works. I suppose you have no shared storage, so you can only do cold migration, but it would be very simple for you.

Select the virtual machines you want to migrate, feed their stop and "migrate." Select "change host and data store.

The only problem is to migrate vCenter. But there is one thing - hot-clone, you can rather than migration. Old vCenter power off and turn it on again.

  • Questions for a Storage vMotion

    Hello

I just started a Storage vMotion to a virtual machine that is total storage is 445 GB (divided into 4 vmdk files).

The migration has started very well, but when he got about 20% someone restarted the VM. Virtual machine now come back to the top again, but the age migrated % increases always, however I can't seem to see progress on the size of the files.

I would like to cancel this migration and start over, but whenever I right click on the active task to cancel, the Cancel option is grayed out.

Does anyone know how I can cancel this migratrion so I can start it again (without causing problems with the virtual machine)?

    Thank you

What files are in every situation and what are their sizes?  The SVmotion process creates a snapshot of the original disc, although she's copying the hard (s), then reparents the snapshot and it engages on the destination.  If this process is interrupted, the virtual machine may be in an inconsistent state on the remote data store.

  • Storage VMotion VM > 2 TB

Hi, we will implement 5 ESXi, and multiple LUNS are all size to 2 TB. In addition also have several virtual machines with multiple VMDK files, and in some cases, the total size of all the VMDK files for a virtual machine unique exceeds 2 TB, i.e. the VMDK files for the virtual machine are spread over 2 or more LUNS.

I have a question consider that to Storage VMotion, if I decide to SVMotion a virtual machine > 2 TB, vSphere allows you to choose what data LUN store to move the virtual machine. I know that with small virtual machines a single destination LUN can be selected, but for a virtual machine large multiple LUNS can be selected?

    Thank you

Of course, you can specify where you want to move your VMDK.

In the svMotion window you have an advance button. Here, you get the options to each VMDK + virtual machine configuration files.

  • Storage vMotion - WITH RDM? - Or will they ignored most of the time?

Hi all - I have a storage vMotion, 5 hosts in the cluster - five or 6 virtual machines with RDM are pinned to specific hosts for the love of the DRS, but I want to go where the readers of the OS, then to VMDK is one San to another. If the virtual machine has a C:\ drive on the data store, all the other disks on the virtual computer is through physical RDM. ALL I need to move is the c:\(VMDK) in the process of storage vmotion.

Time without are connected and work today to the ESX host in the cluster, all hosts are sized to see the RDM.

My question is, when we go to perform the storage vMotion, how to avoid such failure? the RDM are my concern in the past, I think I remember a machine do not migrate when he had attached RDMs.

any comments or thoughts would be really useful.

    Nick

You can also move the ROW pointers with the data store 'change' - Assistant. Just be sure to select "same as source" for the format of the target disk. If you choose thick or thin, the RDM will be transformed into a VMDK, but with "same format" simply the ROW pointer is moved to the new data store.

  • What vmnic Storage vMotion use?

    Hello everyone,

I created my pile and all around nic teaming vmotion fault tolerance and so on... BUT! :

There are things that I can't understand...

What vmnic is used for storage vmotion? !

I explain, when I have a virtual machine to the host and the other, no problem the correct vmnic is used, with nic teaming definition of vmotion.

BUT, when I migrated a virtual machine from a to another data store every time, but every time vmnic 0 point?

    Any ideas?

Thanks a lot because I really don't understand why...

In addition to my question, I would like to say that when I linked the vmkernel on iSCSI port was on the same subnet and the same configuration of network even vlan (no VLAN sort...).

OK, that explains my question from above, must have been validated as I wrote.

What you need to do to be able to get through your desired interfaces iSCSI traffic is to have at least the different IP subnets. Different VLAN is also highly recommended, but not technically necessary, however a best practice for several reasons.

So, basically, set the IP on the SAN iSCSI target some address a different IP subnet, set in place the VMkernel interfaces on the host with IP on the same subnet. Make sure that the Vmkernels is connected to one the VMNIC you want, which is not the same as your network management on VMNIC0.

Start with that and make sure it works, then you might look at the mulitpathing / iSCSI binding.

I have the following situation and hope someone has an idea if it works.

Storage vMotion is an operation of the host, and therefore the transfer of data should remain completely in Italy.

  • Storage Vmotion Virtual Center Server

Is it possible to storage vmotion virtual Center

4.0.0 Server? or are their any gotcha?

I need to do, but I play it a little prudent

The formatting of your post is a little messed up, but if the question is, can you sVMotion your vCenter VM, then the answer is Yes.  Still, it is after all just a virtual machine.

  • Simultaneous storage vmotion?

Given that Vsphere 4.1 improves on the question of Scsi reservation by now at the block level (I think anyway), it is relatively safe to do more than 1 storage vmotion? I know that in esx 3.5, we met a few huge problems once while doing 4 at a time, since then, we just do one at a time.

    Thank you!

    I regularly use 3 both over 1 GB/s.

  • Storage vMotion and RDM

I have a question for you about storage vMotion. I have a virtual machine with a vmdk file and a RDM. I want to storage vmotion the vmdk file. There is also a file associated with the ROW pointer. How this pointer file is reassocie to the RDM? I'm evacuating small LUNS and move virtual machines to the largest lun.

On page 199 and 201 of the basic ESX Administrator's Guide, it states that, if I select "same as Source for a RDM, only the mapping file will be migrated. Have you done this before? I just wanted to see if anyone in the field has had an experience with this process.

    7. If you chose to move the virtual machine configuration file and virtual disks, select a disc format, and then click

    Next.

    Description of the option

Same as Source to use the format of the original virtual disk.

If you select this option for a RDM in physical or virtual drive

compatibility mode, only the mapping file is migrated.

Thin provisioned using the format thin to save storage space. The thin virtual disk use as

storage space because it needs for its initial implementation. When the virtual disk

needs more space, it can grow in size up to its maximum allowed of capacity.

This option is not available for RDM in physical compatibility mode. If you

Select this option for a virtual RDM compatibility mode, the ROW is

converted to a virtual disk. RDM converted virtual disks cannot be

    converted into RDM.

Thick allocate an amount fixed disk space for the virtual disk. The virtual

drive in thick format does not change its size and from the beginning

occupies the entire data store space for her.

This option is not available for RDM in physical compatibility mode. If you

Select this option for a virtual RDM compatibility mode, the ROW is

converted to a virtual disk. RDM converted virtual disks cannot be

    converted into RDM.

    Thank you

    Hi Savoy6,

When you sVmotion a virtual machine with a disc RDM, the pointer file is re-created on the new location and points to the raw LUN.

  • improvements of Storage Vmotion vCenter 4

Storage Vmotion improvements in vCenter 4 include a new change block tracking feature that can really improve this feature. I have a few vmotions really big storage to perform.

My question is, these part improvement in vCenter 4, or VMS must be level hardware version 7 to take advantage of theses improvements.

I think that it is for vCenter and not based on the version of virtual machine.

    Point will be awarded.

    Thank you

I think that it is for vCenter and not based on the version of virtual machine.

Is no not part of vCenter, is a part of ESX, vCenter MANAGES the entire process, it's not ACTUALLY the process.

a.p. has a point, that it is part of the equipment of the V7, but he points out as Troy STILL won't make a difference for sVmotion.

In all these improvements are just a part of what ESX 4 is all about, and I have ALWAYS said (do not take into account or not) 64-bit has EVERYTHING to do with these improvements, and less to do with the code changes.  I think that 64-bit made these changes possible, and that is what has helped vSphere / ESX enormously.

  • vSphere Eval question on storage

    Hello

I have 4 servers to assess vSphere and here's what I have to work with, where I am and my question on storage.

3 HP DL380 G5 servers with 8 GB of ram each and 4x146GB discs

    1 HP DL380 G6 Server with 12 GB and 3x146GB, 5x300GB readers.

I installed ESXi4 Server G6 with two data warehouses, Go first, 268, second 1.09 TB.

I intend to install ESXi4 on the other 3 machines and have vCenter

The server that is running under VM on two servers.

    Now to my question.

I'm not a tradional SAN device. I have a lot of space, however, if you add up all the disks on the 4 servers. How you prefer to use

existing hardware, I have to install a configuration compatible HA, vMotion and DRB.  Again, by using the 4 servers with the

current hard drives installed.  Can I create a virtual SAN using the disc on 4 servers? I think I understand the delivery of two virtual machines

vCenter on 2 separate servers running in a reasonable way?

Thanks for any help. My first attempt trying to configure ESX/Vsphere.

    Kind regards

    Paul

StorMagic www.stormagic.com has a free virtual SAN for vSphere.

You can create up to 2 TB per ESX with the free license.

You should be able to test vSphere (HA, DRS, vMotion)

However, I don't see that FT is not fully supported.
