Quick question on external hard drive

Got a new iMac 21 "and was just wondering if it makes a difference in proformance if I leave external drive plugged in, or should I eject and unplug the device after use?

I always let my DHM plugged in and running, and they seem to work for many years. However I always make it a point to get high quality envelopes. The speaker only I will use on my iMac are the OWC Mercury Elite Pro (www.macsales.com) line. I found the speakers cheap like WD, Seagate, etc. tend to have a higher failure rate.

  • Question about external hard drive file systems

Some of my external hard drives use NTFS, other system FAT 32.  I use them mainly for the storage of RAW images, and they must be able to Exchange files between them, and with my computer using Photoshop 5 and Windows 7.  Should I wait for problems between these two file systems?  Or can it be just ignored?

NTFS is better than FAT32. In addition to the benefits of using NTFS as mentioned by BearPup, the files will be safe as well as FAT32 NTFS. In addition, FAT32 has a maximum file (one file) to 4 GB size restriction. In addition, the file cannot be stored. For NTFS, it is more than 20 GB. The NTFS file system accident rate is very low compared to FAT32 format.

  • My external hard drive will not go up and I'm not sure what the question is

My external hard drive will show up in disk utility, but not of viewfinder. I tried to hit "repair disk" and he says it will take 4 hours, but after a while, that he's finally going to say that it is impossible to repair the disk and I need to make a backup.

    Help?

Almost always, the question is quite simple: the hard drive is faulty or has failed. So I hope that you have a backup of everything that is on, it is absolutely essential.

  • LR Workflow question (external hard drive)

    Hello world

I just started to really use LR correctly and love it. I am currently using structures of folders on my mac, at importation and his good work, however I only have a small HD on my mac so ideally want to move some of the files to an external hard drive. My question is what is the best way to do this? I understand that I can move the folder to an external hard drive, but is it the right way to do because my collection will then be shared between two places and some not saved if that makes sense?

I have attached a screenshot so I hope it makes more sense

    Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 20.19.59.png

To move the pictures to a different HD:

    1. In your operating system, (STILL) COPY photos to a new HD, keep the entire unchanged file hierarchy
    2. In Lightroom, do a right-click on the top-level folder and select the location of the update folder and then point to the new location of the top-level (parent) folder
    3. When you are 100% sure that it worked correctly, you can remove photos on the original hard drive.

Hi ya'll! I'm still learning how to navigate my way with Lightroom. (Last time I wrote, I got a few responses that work.) Thank!) Now, I have another question. When I try to copy photos to my external hard drive to a CD/DVD, no matter if do leave LR or my car, I get the message; "Disc burning is not supported by LR on this computer." I've tried everything I can think of, so, I thought I'd see if anyone can find out if there is something I can do. Or could it be that my computer just can't handle it? Help! • Question: How can I format an external hard drive

I am trying to use an external hard drive with Time Machine.  He tells me that my external must be formatted in a format "journaled". I can't find any way to do it and the Mac is do not do it either. Can someone tell me how to proceed so that Time Machine works to put in shape?

If Time Machine is not reformat the disk itself, choose Utilities in the Finder Go menu, open disk utility, select the drive in the sidebar and delete it.

  • external hard drive questions

How can I move only my new images on an external hard drive? I have my library of photos copied onto an external hard drive currently and you want to move only new images. The only way I know how is to move my library of photos once again, but then I would have 2 libraries of photos on the hard drive and double images I want.

Also, how can I save my external hard drive to another hard drive external?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am fairly new to back up my photos and tips on a systematic and safe method to save frequently pictures would be great! Thank you

You can "move" and new photos to any photo library - you must use the Photos to import, iCloud library sync them or PowerPhotos to move

How to backup up depends on your backup software - backup TimeMachine to an EHD - you need to remove the form DHM the list excluded in the TM preferences

  • External hard drive question.

I have installed a portable external hard drive on my MacPro, but, when I click on the My Passport icon, a message appears saying, "my passport file cannot be opened because you don't have permission to see its content".  I am new to all this and would like to know what I would do then so that I could get access to the backups.

Select it, choose get information on the file menu, open the section sharing & permissions and give you access if possible.

  • large external hard drive for editing fcpx

Hi, a question of two parts:

    1. I was wondering how people manage their media: is it recommended to store the middle on an external hard drive and the reference to it? Or are the libraries & projects also stored on an external drive?

    2. I have about 4 TB of video and want to buy a large external hard drive that is fast enough for 4 k video editing (with proxy or optimized media, single stream, nothing too fancy etc.). I just bought the new iMac 5 k which has connections thunderbolt.

I read a lot about love at first sight vs. speed USB3, disk hard drive gears, RAIDs etc but am not the wisest. I don't want to it is an exaggeration either.

    It would be good enough: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01BBZ4Q0C/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8 & psc = 1 & smid = A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

Or is it better to use for backup and should I go for the version of TB: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FIYJ7LG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8 & psc = 1 & smid = A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

    Or a USB3 would be pretty quick with a double disc is RAID0? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Book-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBLWE0080JCH-EESN/dp/B00L9 0DX04/ref = pd_sim_147_4? ie = UTF8 & PSC = 1 & refRID = YFMN75KFN652T20XB40B

Price differences are pretty extreme and I know too how much of a real difference it would make to my editing.

I have trouble with my 2010 macbook pro and a portable external hard drive 5400 RPM so would avoid this situation.

    Thanks in advance!

1 - Yes, always put libraries and media on a second fast drive.  Video/audio "data streaming" can bog down the stream of data required by the operating system and the app themselves.  There is limited bandwidth between the CPU and hard drives, as your Internet connection.

RIAD 0 is quite obsolete, stay away from him.  USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt are good enough for 4K editing.  RAID is faster than the single SSD (same).  Spins disks should always be 7200 RPM, even the system drive.  5400 is far too slow.  If you go with RAID, get a 4th unit of Bay, with 7200 RPM drives in a RAID 5 configuration.  MacSales.com has excellent products.  As promises (their RAIDS of you bolt P2 are the fastest on the market) and other well known brands.  I was never a fan of the product line of My Book.

  • Maximum number of external hard drives

    Hello

I started on a project long-term digitization of the hours and hours of video, including the film, Beta, VHS tapes to mini tape and State standards strong HD cameras player collected for almost 50 years. My question is this; is there a limit to how many external hard drives, I can connect to my iMac (27 ' 5 K maxed out processor and card and 8 GB memory graphics and an old 24 "2.8 Ghz core 2 duo with 4 GB of memory).

I am willing to increase the memory on the machine of 5K, but the memory of the older machine's maximum.

I currently have 11 external drives connected through 2 of the best powered USB hubs that I can find, each of these flows into one of each machines USB connector, but readers are fill up very quickly. Wouldn't be better to divide the number of readers through additional hubs therefor splitting of the inputs with 2 USB taken numbers on each machine? Due to the VERY disorganized way content was initially done I need to access all the drives so I can remove the clips, etc I need to properly edit the raw content.

I hope someone can advise me on this issue.

    Blackrockguy.

You're not likely to use all these readers * at the same time *, so why risk connecting it all? To test the limits?

It may work correctly, or there may be a power problem (especially if some readers do not have their own power supply).

It seems more prudent to use the readers, you need (and back them up safely!), store them and then use other readers.

  • External hard drive is extremely slow backup

We have an external hard drive connected to our iMac. Time Machine used to store backups, but something happened and he stopped to save on 16 February the hard disk became full and when the reader become unalterable for Time Machine could not delete older backups.

I contacted Apple to see what we should do. Apple told me to format the external hard drive, so I did. Then I put the time Machine to start back up again to do.

Time Machine now seems to be back up to him, but he tells me that he will take 25 days. It will also very slowly.

Are there still problems with the hard drive? What should we do? Is it actually backup? It will still save it slowly or right the first time?

    Thank you!!!

Look at the hard disk in the sidebar of the Finder and see if a new Time Machine file has been created on the drive. If so, I'd let the backup race. Since reformat you the drive, Time Machine needs to backup the entire computer. Initial estimates of the remaining time are usually very inaccurate. Once the initial backup is complete, backup will go much quicker. See questions 7 and 29 in the article below.

  • I can't erase my external hard drive as my Mac told me!

I have a Fantom external hard drive 1 TB which is my drive Time Machine for years.  Sometimes it disconnects itself, but it has reconnected always very well.  But today as I got an error message that says that the drive could not be fixed by disk utility and would not appear as a disk in the Finder.  Utility disk SEES the drive but can't get it cannot eject it and can't fix it.  I'm ok with totally annihilate and nine.  She had backups, and I can easily do a new backup at any time.  The problem is that the disk utility will not mount it so I can delete it, but when I try just to erase, it cannot do without mount everything first!  I'm in this catch-22: How can I wipe the drive and start over when disk utility can't do?  It also will not mount on my Windows laptop, so I can't wipe it clean there either, reformat it on my Mac.  Anyone have an idea how I can just wipe my own drive so that I can use it on my Mac again?

    UPDATE TO ORIGINAL POSTER:

I was finally able to remedy using Terminal Server by following the instructions described here:

    http://Apple.StackExchange.com/a/105674

    It reads in part:

You can force unmount a disk by running the following command in Terminal:

    diskutil unmountDisk force /Volumes/VOLUMENAME

Replace VOLUMENAME by the name of a volume on the disk that you are trying to take it apart.

I had first to use "diskutil list" first to find out what the Mac called this external hard drive because it was RECOGNIZED but would not mount or dismount.  Instead of using "/ Volumes/VOLUMENAME", my Mac called the drive in question "/ dev/disk2.  My full order was "diskutil unmountDisk force/dev/disk2".

It worked immediately, and then disk utility was very quickly able to erase the disc.  Once erased, he mounted again very well!  So if anyone has the same problem, try this!
