Reflections on "Extensible" storage (local, non - SAN) in ESXi 5

I'm looking for advice/thoughts on this kind of the storage configuration I should consider small deployment of virtual machines.  I'll try to give some general advice and what kinds of compromises and limits, I work with.

  • No SAN: all storage is local.  Right now, I'm working with a couple of servers Cisco UCS, with anywhere from ~ 300 SSD ~ 4 TB of SATA storage drives.  New: all the disks are local, a San is not in the scope/estimates for this.  Willing to accept that this is not optimal but also need to do the best I can here.
  • Operating systems are for the most part win2008, win7, linux.  Maybe others, but these are dominant.
  • Essential condition is to be able to "push" files over time systems.
    • We know that * some * of these servers will grow considerably in their storage needs.  Unfortunately, we do not know who is not possible to pre-configure the large disk on each of them from the outset.

So I have a few questions of high level... some of them are probably basic/stupid, and for that I apologize.  My background is heavy network, PC/server systems that are quite heavy, but very light on storage.

  • How effective is thin provisioning?  If my physical hard drive, is that just an array of RAID5 2 TB shared 20 VM... is possible/reasonable just configure each virtual machine with a disc of 2 TB thin-set in service, and then control the real storage because it develops over time?
  • Assuming that my RAID controller supports adding online records in the table, it's a reasonable thing to consider?  I * am * in a position where take down physical hosts for maintenance is not just a deal, so if I can add more disks in the array later she is great OK if it takes a couple hours of time offline.  I am trying to understand if the following workflow is possible, and if possible is considered reasoanbly safe?
  • Suppose a host with 4x500G than SATA drives in a RAID5 array, it's a large store of data single VMFS where everything lives...  On this host, we have a number of linux VMs each with a small disc of BONE and a larger data drive (let's call it 600GO).  At some point, the vmfs data store is close to full, and I want to expand it... What are my options here?
    • I can do something like this:
      1. Turn off the VMs, shut down the server.  (it's OK...)
      2. Add additional physical disks on the machine and push the matrix RAID controller level (I realize that this might take a while)
      3. Start, expand the vmfs data store in ESXI (is it possible?  If so, how?)
      4. increase the size of the disk assigned to the greedy VM in storage in ESXi
      5. Start the virtual machine, extend the partition, and then push the file system (I know how to Linux, is it feasible in windows?)

anyway... it's probably more enough questions to get started.  I appreciate some advice/ideas that people might have.

To monitor the growth of the VMFS data and store what I understand, you want an automatic transmission incase a threshold defined by you exceed you must first configure the IP address of the smtp server of vCenter parameters. After that, go to the alarm at the level of the data center and to go in the store of data use alarm properties reports tab, select Add and sets the e-mail address of your part there.

  • Best practices for transportation of guests of storage Local to SAN

Our company has finally implemented a storage area network to take advantage of vMotion and HA. Does anyone have suggestions on how to spend 15 virtual machines guests with a total of 4 TB San with a minimum of effort and downtime? The way I see I have the following three options, but would like even though some entries:

    1) powering of each guest, manually move the files hard to the new data store. update parameters (not really a viable option)

    (2) use the vCenter Converter to move them to a new data store

    (3) use the option migrate from vCenter to move everyone to a new data store. I'm not sure I can use this option as vMotion is not yet on.

Yes - if you can wait for SVMotion, then it would be the ideal solution.  No downtime necessary!

  • Displacement of vCenter Server Local to SAN storage

I currently have vCenter server running inside a virtual machine on ESX. Today, I realized that it is on a local storage instead of SAN storage, which means I'm in trouble if this host ever goes down. Has anyone left VC local stroage for before SAN? What is the best way to achieve this? I want to keep on the same host, I want to just move the storage. Any suggestion would be appreciated!

    Thank you!

Well, your DB is running on the same VM?  See cloning is a feature of vCenter, but if stop you your VM vCenter, you lose the ability to clone. You can probably copy the files using something like WinSCP, but you'd have to power down your instance of vCenter, make a note of which hosts its operation on.  Remove the vCenter VM for local stocks, do not delete yet.  Take the new files you have copied during a shared storage, navigate and do a right-click on the .vmx and add to the inventory, and follow the prompts.  Once your instance comes back online, you can delete the files from local storage.

Another suggestion would be if DB is separate, create a new instance and point to your existing DB

  • Local users of VMware ESXi 5.5 for the oversight role of the CIM

Hello, is it possible to create local users in ESXi and assign roles and permissions to manage only CIM interactions? I learned that local groups are not supported to 5.1 from. This means that we cannot add a role (for CIM Interactions only) for a local user created on ESXi? Please advise!

    Thank you!

Why not give a user privileges? Maybe he needs admin access to host not only CIM interactions. Any problem with giving Admin privileges?

  • Go Local to SAN storage

I just finished the configuration and the connection of our new Dell's IScsi SAN (Equallogic) to one of our guest VMS (ESX 3.5) and created a SAN logical unit number to contain virtual machines.  I have also attached the LUNS to the host of the virtual computer so that on the host computer, I now have local storage (where the virtual machines currently reside) and the joint LUN.

What is the best way to move the virtual machines in local storage to the LUN?  No offense, but I don't want to make a bunch of Linux commands at the level of the command prompt.

    Thanks for any help.

    Hello

If the virtual machine is running, and you have vCenter, use SVMotion.

If the virtual machine is turned off, and you have vCenter use Migrate.

If the virtual machine is turned off and that you do NOT have vCenter using VMware Converter.

  • Flash drive storage local reset of parameter None

I have windows 7 64 bit using two fire fox and IE when I click with the right button on a video flash etc. and access local storage settings is set to zero, if I move the cursor, and then click close it does absolutely nothing, when I reopen it the setting for the same video it is always zero. I tried reseting the global storage with l http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.htm parameter and the parameters of dosnt handler function at all. When I try to click on allow third nothing happens a check even dosnt apear in the box. If I try to move the cursor, it resets right back to zero. I thought 10 KB was the default for all Web sites... but I can't change the value by default either.

I don't have Win7, but just any windows you have.  Location and values for this * secret config file STUPID * I'm about to consult should be the same for any version of Windows.

Indeed, after reviewing your question again, you could just be a victum of the corrupt file "settings.sol".  If this is the case, you can try using only the first 2 steps in my hack instructions.  After completing the step #2, simply delete the file "settings.sol", restart your browser, go run a video Flash and Flash Player will see that the configuration file is missing, so it will create a nice Virgin own copy from scratch.  Doesn't hurt to try.

Now what I was about to suggest as a first step, if you have a slight understanding of hexadecimal code and want to make a permanent adjustment to the parameter and try again after my hack, step 1 completely through to the default #6 step.  Working for me great.  Not quite hate the app and curse the programmer whenever I use it now.

  • Storage vmotion of storage facilities to storage San in ESXi 5.0

    Hello

I have the host couple ESXi 5.0 with license free of all is vmdk are located in storage facilities. Moving all the vm for local to the SAN storage data store, but the local data store attached failed to attend several ESX host as storage shared, is there a way that allow me to use the method of storage vmotion to migrate all the vmdk to centralize SAN without interruption?

I have a vcenter to manage whole army but only for normal administrative task. How can I set the local data store storage shared storage and able to present multiple hosts?

    Hello

Do you have the vSphere licenses?
If so, you can add the vCenter ESXi hosts, present SAN storage for ESXi hosts and perform Storage vMotion (migrate the data store) local storage to SAN storage.

You will need because the function of storage vMotion (migrate) is a feature of vCenter vCenter, this option is not available in standalone ESXi.

See the documentation here - migration of Virtual Machines with svmotion: vSphere Documentation Center

If you can accept interruptions of service, you can use the migration cold: vSphere Documentation Center

  • Migrating from 5.0.0 free ESXi / ESX 4.1.0 a local database to bought ESXi 4.1.0 with SAN

We currently have four host servers.  Two host servers are the free version of VMware ESXi 5.0.0 and ESX 4.1.0.  I have two hosts in a cluster, obviously with the version under license and running VMWare VCenter ESXi 4.1.0 running.

All of these guests have all (vmdk files etc.) data stored locally on the host servers.  I'll be migrating to a new SAN and buy under license of VMware.

I need to move the virtual hosts free version VMware servers (5.0.0 ESXi / ESX 4.1.0) to the cluster host ESXi 4.1.0 under license.  I can export the folder containing all the files and import it on the cluster license.  Once records are there, how can I activate the servers of records and pull up?

I have to get off these hosts old existing virtual servers on the new servers which we you place your order.

In this case I the new environment configuration and then for example use VMware Converter to migrate (V2V, with the virtual machine is turned off) the virtual machine of the former hosts in the vCenter Server environment allowing you to select the target storage.

  • No storage local bl460 B7 during the reinstallation

I get a GROUP on one of my hosts servers and after the installation of patches, etc., without luck, I decided to reinstall the server, but for some reason, I don't have any local storage to install ESXi 4.1 of the ISO from HP (4.1_U1_Apr_2011_ESXi_HD_USB_SDImgeInstlr_Z7550_00096.iso). I tried with the old ISO from HP, but with the same result.

No idea what could be the problem?

(Attached the CMTF screenshot if anyone has a solution for this :-))

    Micheline says:

I tried actually just that - remove the RAID, recreated, but still no local storage. I see that all of our SAN volumes.

Are your SAS drives?  SAS is in the section of storage when installing ESXi.  I experienced this with some HP380 G7.

Also install its best practices to disconnect from your San over the BONE.  You don't want to inadvertently format your SAN LUNS...

  • HP SAS HBAS with IBM Storage and SAS SAN vs iSCSI SAN

Hello, I am working on a project, and I have to add a SAN solution to my client infaestructure. My client already has a HP Server and we wanted to add another server, but an IBM one. I thought I'd add storage IBM (DS3200) that has two SAS interfaces. The problem is that the Distributor IBM says who does not know if the HP Server will be able to communicate with the SAS IBM storage. So, one possibility was to put on the server HP HP SAS HBA Controller. The second option is to put a SAS HBA Controller IBM. I think that the SAS is a standard, it doesn't matter what brand I use of HBA. Should not it works anyway?

There is another option which adds instead of SAS one iSCSI storage. The problem is that I do not know the performance than the iSCSI storage. I want to put inside it's VM with Exchange Server (50 mailboxes), an ERP (for 50 users) with it's SQL Server, a computer file virtual, a virtual machine server with Active Directory.

    So, the questions are:

1 - does anyone have experience with iSCSI storage to see if its performance if goog enough (I intend to use a dedicated to the iSCSI network gigabit switch)?

2 does anyone know if I use different brands of servers (in this example an IBM and HP) with a SAS storage IBM? Who be it already done? The HP SAS HBA are compatible with the IBM iSCSI storage? IBM SAS HBA are compatible with HP servers?

    3. in the case of being able to do what I say to question 2, that do you suggest? Put a HP SAS HBA within the HP Server or upgrade an IBM SAS HBA inside HP Server?

Of course the option I want to use is the addition of SAS IBM storage instead of using an iSCSI one, but I'm not sure of their compatibility between HP and IBM storage servers.

    Thanks in advance.

In this case, the reason why I wouldn't use SAS is that your application requires this level of performance and the cost as not justified. You can configure iSCSI and direct savings in most important features such as snapshot, replication and dedup. If you were available to this solution with the DS3200 spend you 10K and that none of these features. Performance is very good, but you will find that the system is not yet warmed up with this load. The SAS Protocol can support high IO, but is not what provisions IO, is the number of disks and the RAID mode that defines your ability to e/s. I put 40 K terraced small IOPS / s on a single caching of 1 GB iSCSI target, so he can make the e/s. flow is not as high , but do you really need it. In the future you can profitable move to 10Gbe if you find insufficient bandwidth, which would be faster than the SAS 3 GB limit that is uneconomic to upgrade 3 + times.

    Kind regards

    Mike

  • Installing vCenter VM - Local or SAN?

What is the recommended location to install the virtual machine running vCenter?

Local storage or on the SAN?

    Thanks in advance.

Like Troy if you run in a VM, ideally you'd like it be on SAN disk.  This is assuming you are using multiple ESX servers connected to the San.  In this configuration, you would be able to use VMotion when you consider an ESX host offline for the update, correction or other maintenance, to ensure that VirtualCenter remains online.  If the vCenter was a virtual machine installed on a local or disc attached to a single host for another reason, the VM environment becomes more difficult to deal with the impacts of disconnect that host sometimes.

  • The use of storage local sata on Dell Optiplex 745

I'm making Esxi update 3 using my local storage to store the VM images. I have esxi installation using boot usb according to the thread below:

    http://communities.VMware.com/message/1138818

When I log in VI CLient, storage adapters, it shows the 2 port SATA IDE Controller (ICH8) with vmhba1 and vmhba33. But when I try to add a data store, it gives an empty list.

In my BIOS, I put SATA to legacy and active chip virtualization, the player has a fat 32 partition. I copied the new oem.tgz in Hypervisor1.

fdisk-l and esxcfg-vmhbadevs only list vmhba32 device which is my USB.

I tried to find info on both devices in/proc/scsi/ata_piix and for both entries contain the following message:

The driver does not yet support the proc fs
    vmkadapter:vmhba1

Since then he has worked for some else with the same exact system, so it should work for me as well. What should I try next?

I would try it with SATA Native mode.  In addition, make sure that you do not have built-in capabilities "RAID" activated - the Optiplex 745 has of an embedded controller "fake RAID", and those who do NOT work with ESX/ESXi.

In addition, how are you on the attempt to add a data store?  You should go to Configuration-> storage and then adding using disk/LUN in the wizard.

  • Adobe Flash Player settings storage Local Mafia Wars Facebook popup.

I play Mafia Wars on Facebook. I'm using Firefox 3.6.8 and Mac OS 10.6.5, Flash Player 10.1. Some time ago I received a popup called Zynga settings Adobe Flash Player Local Storage asking permission to store information on my hard drive and give me the option to allow or deny the request. However, the popup is blocked; This popup will not go away.

I contacted Zynga, followed their instructions and uninstalled and reinstalled Flash Player. all with no success. When I play this game on other computers, including the PC, this popup isn't here which brings me to the conclusion that the file is on my Mac hard drive somewhere and has nothing to do with the game itself. Please tell me how to find this file so that I can remove it. It spoils my enjoyment of the game, because it limits what I can do in the game.

  • Essbase performance on the transition from local to san disk - steps?

    Hi all

    I have two questions:

    (1) is it a significant performance gain when we Essbase (essbase total folder) to say disk D:\ to drive SAN G:\ say in the same server?

    (2) what are the steps to perform this migration of a disk to another drive in the same machine? The procedure is different for discs moving premises to the other and a local drive on SAN drive?

    Help, please

And in return, I'll steal Glenn's response - changing this setting will only create files on the new volume when the current will reach their limit of two gigabytes.

As he writes, you will need to export, modify the settings, clear out, db shutdown, restart and import.

I think in the future I'll just steal all the responses of Glenn as the quality of them is higher than mine on several levels. :) I already steal all his ideas/techniques/code where possible...

  • Owners: Storage Local photos

    Hello!

I can't find any information on this subject, or talk or user guide... So I wonder, are locally stored pictures (I have everything in my library to iCloud) on the Apple TV (4th gen) itself?

My idea is that I can have some photos on my Apple TV and take the camera with me when I visit friends and relatives. Connect it to the TV and enjoy the photos and all.

It would also affect my buying decision which version to get (32 or 64 GB).

I would be very grateful if one of the owners here could check and verify if the iCloud library photos are stored locally on the Apple TV.

Thank you very much for help in this matter and help me to find the right model for me.

    Rupert

No, the pictures are not stored locally, except some of them for the screen saver, and anything that might be in the cache. You certainly couldn't take your Apple TV and see your entire collection.
