Reformatting my data store

Hello

I have a 1.36 Terabyte ATA drive in my ESXi machine. The maximum size of a VM is 256 gigabytes because my block size is 1 meg.

I need to create a virtual 800 meg. Based on my reading I have to reformat the data store.

I have two virtual machines on this data store I want to keep. My plan is to:

1 export the two virtual to the FVO.

2 remove the data from the VSphere Client store.

3. Add the datastore to return. I need to reformat the data at the time store?

If I am invited, I will choose 8 meg blocks so I can have large virtual methods.

My plan is viable? I just can't remember if adding a store of data raises the need for a new format. Should I still remove the data store for the reformat once I exported the virtual methods in the ovf? I would like to go with the VSphere Client if possible since I'm not real handy with linux commands.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike Gallery

Mike,

(1) I would recommend export under VMs VMware, not OVFs.

(2) Yes

(3) Yes, you will be asked for the size on the creation of the data store.

All this from the GUI.

  • Block size is too small - reformat the data store or create files VMDk 2?

    Hello

I'm new to VMware and so far I absolutely love everything about her!  Well, I was not too happy when I realized that I can't create more than 256 GB a drive without reformatting the VMFS datastore.   Apparently, I accepted the block size of 1 MB by default during the installation...   I now need to configure a file server with about 500 GB of storage.  The data store with a larger block size (4 MB would be fine for me) reformatting is easy enough?  I am currently working on the first host ESXi 4.1 and will move to set up 2 more hosts in the coming weeks.  I read somewhere on the forum that ESXi 4.0 doesn't let you change the block size by default of 1 MB - is this true or relevant to 4.1?

Currently, I have only 2 small VMs on that host, and these can be easily saved and put offline for a few hours, if necessary.  When starting the server, I created a single RAID array that holds ESXi and all virtual machines - does that mean that I have to reinstall ESXi in order to increase the size of the block?

An alternative that I can get to is to simply create 2 255 GB VMDK each and load distribution of storage in the guest operating system (Win 2008).   Performance wise, is a disc more great and better (or worse) than the two smaller disks?

On a related note, what should I choose for the "Independent" option when you add a new virtual disk?  Default is disabled (not independent).

Your thoughts, focus and expertise are welcome and will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,

    Dothan

    Dothan,

You should power (after the virtual machine backup) remove the current data store and create a new one with the new block size. I did not have this on ESXi 4.1 again, however, he worked on ESXi 4.0.

The maximum size of VMDK. If you want ot be able to take pictures, make sure you subtract twice the size of block in GB of the documented maximum size.

    Block size 1 MB--> 254 GB (= 256 GB, 2 GB)

    Block size of 2 MB--> 508 GB (= 512 GB - 4 GB)

    Size of block 4 MB--> GB 1 016 (= 1 024 GB - 8 GB)

    Block size of 8 MB--> GB 2 032 (= 2 048 GB to 16 GB)

  • Can I delete the local data store on esx 3.5?

I have a client with vmware ESX 3.5 no esxi

They have a local data store but it is formatted with a block size of 1 MB, so I can put only a 256 GB VM out there and I need to put a test VM with a larger size.

I know that in ESXi 4 you can simply delete the local data store and create a new, but I'm not familiar with ESX 3.5, are there hidden files on the data store that the server uses?  If I search for the store there's nothing in there.

    Thank you

    Mike

    Hi Mike,.

You can simply reformat your data store. Take a look at the following article:

Of course, you must back up and delete any data you have on this data store before the format operation.

    Good luck!

  • reformatting of data warehouses - Q fast

    Hello

I have an ESXi server that is formatted with 2 x 2 TB partitions. The problem is that they are formatted with a block of 1 MB and I need to store large files on them.

I thought to move all the data to 1 partition, then remove and re-add the partition now empty with a block of 8 MB. Once the other partition has been reformatted I intend to move all data above and delete/reload the remaining partition with a block of 8 MB.

Is this ok to do? I was worried that it might affect the ESXi operating system somehow?

    See you soon,.

    H

    Hi Huwy

    This should be good.

This will not affect the ESXi installation.

If it's local storage and ESXi installation is on local disks, when you reformat the data store be sure to free space State use only.

  • Data store missing after the reconstruction of the raid array

One of the players in my raid array has failed a few days ago.

I had a spare drive in the table so the controller immediately began the process of rebuilding and all servers were running throughout.

When the reconstruction has been completed (I checked this via the user interface of raid array and the newspaper), I had to stop the server to remove disc defective (not replaceable chassis hot) and when I restarted the server, the data on the raid array store isn't there anymore.  I also checked through the raid controller interface that I removed the (defective) drive and that the table was always in a ready state when he came.

In vsphere client, when I click on the storage... Add link, the server sees the material but if I click then it tells me that it will be re - format the volume.  See attachment.  I have most certainly does not take the next step and reformat.  Simply, I took the screenshot and regularized.

I found these instructions, but they are for an older version of ESXi and am unsure if they are correct for ESXi 6.0.0 338124

VMware KB: Lack of data store after the reconstruction of the RAID disk/LUN

Here are the steps I should follow?

If these aren't the right instructions can you tell me the version which is for ESXi 6.0.0 338124 that I couldn't find anything either.

    Thank you

    Hi ThompsG,

Yes, there are two data stores for the virtual machine located on the RAID array.  The virtual machine itself was stored in a different data store that was not in the raid array.

I spent about 48 hours last week, including this morning, trying to coax ESXi recognizing volumes, with no luck.  Finally, I gave up and I removed the virtual computer hard drives that were on the corrupt data store.  Then the virtual machine came without problem.

Finally, since I have everything on these 2 volumes backed up to a cloud provider, I have recreated the two data stores in the raid array and began the restoration process. It is currently running and has about 16 days left to go.

  • No unit number available logic trying to increase the size of the data store

I am trying to increase the size of my data store.

When you look at the properties of the data store I can see that the current capacity is 738,29 GB and the local device has a capacity of 2.73 TB.

    (see image 1)

However, when I click the button increase, there is no LUNS to select.  (this is the case even when you try to add a new data store).

    What I am doing wrong?

    1.png

    2.png

I'm afraid that there is nothing that you can do without having to reconfigure the storage as long as you use vSphere 4.x. because of the overflow I mentioned earlier (see the KB article) ESXi is only able to use 2.73 TB modulo 2 TB-online ~0.73TB.

Anything that you can do to use currently unused disk space is to reformat, either by dividing the current RAID volume (I guess it's a RAID!) in several logical volumes with less than 2 TB or reinstall the host - if taking in charge - with ESXi 5.x.

  • Remove a data store

I need to remove a data store so that I can reformat vmfs3 to vmfs5. It is my understanding that vcenter will not introduce any APD or correct payday loans? The LUN will remain visible to all guests, as I said I just need to remove the data store on this subject, so I can recreate it with vmfs5.

I guess after I remove it, I should questions some hosts renumerisations (except done automatically vcenter) before I recreate?

    Thank you.

You are right, since you don't anyone the LUN, there is no problem with ODA...

Simply remove the data store and create a new one. After that you can rescan all hosts so that they detect the new format.

  • Increase in the size of block of the local data store

I tried from Googling and it involves a lot of things from the command line and seems to be different ways of doing.

They say that I need to format the drive again and specify a block size.  But isn't ESXi installed on the same partition? If I reformat it, it won't get rid of the ESXi software?

Where can I get easy step by step instructions on how to do this?

If you have no data, go to Configuration / Storage and remove the existing data store.

    Then choose Add datastore.

  • Snapshot error (.. is larger than the maximum size supported by the data store)

    Hello

I have a standalone DL360G5 with local storage. I have about 1.1 TB of storage (free in storage 1 TB)

I have a virtual machine that is configured with a provisioning (256 GB of storage) which is currently 14 GB. He should get a site off backup server.

When you take a snapshot of the next error message.

    'File '.

The error message doesn't make sense because it takes only 14 GB of storage, and since I'm more Quen free 1 TB of storage should not be any problem.

Someone knows how to solve this problem or to get a work around for a snapshot?

    Thank you

I think that you will need to reformat the data with a block size store. By default, the maximum is 256GB. Slim doesn't help here as a snapshot could grow beyond.

  • promotion of iSCSI LUN with the VMFS data store

    Hello

I moved an iSCSI on the website of DR SAN and fact volume so that it was accessible to the ESX host on the site of DR based on the IP address and made the new analysis of the adapter for iSCSI Software in the VI Client on the two hosts on the DR site and he discovered the LUN.

I don't want to go to the Configuration, storage and add storage as this reformatted the volume and it has a VMware Server already on it running happily on the main site.

How can I add the volume as a VMFS data store available on the two hosts as he is picked up automatically?

    Thank you

    Paul

I guess it was a VMFS volume that was used by the ESX environment on main site you, Yes? If you have moved the LUN, i.e. the ESX hosts in the main site no longer have access so that the ESX host at the DR site do not have access, you will need to define EnableResignature = 1 under Advanced settings, LVM

You restart the analysis for storage and you should access your VMFS volume. You will need to register your virtual machines with the new host.

When complete set EnableResignature = 0

  • root properties in the connected data store: error when accessing the date/time storage

When you browse the properties my connected data store I get an error message when you try to read the value of the property of 'storage date/time': object doesn't support this property or method.

    Here is a minimal example:

    Dim oMyDataStore, MyProperty, oMyProperties
    Set oMyDataStore = Navigator.ConnectDataStoreByParameter ("TOC", "" & "C:\Program Files (x 86) \National 2012\Examples\Data\Example_data.tdm" & "" ')
    Set oMyProperties = oMyDataStore.RootElements (1). Properties
    For each MyProperty in oMyProperties
    Call MsgBoxDisp ("property name:" & MyProperty.Name & + "\n"&"property value:" & MyProperty.Value "")
    Next

Why can I not access this particular property by default?

    Hi Phex,

for the date/time properties, an object called UsiTimeDisp is returned. This object allows to that extend features of service as access to each part separately (day, year, hour, seconds,...) of your date/time value. If you want to print the value of time with MessageBoxDisp, you can use the VariantDate this object property.

Your code might look like this then:

    Dim oMyDataStore, MyProperty, oMyProperties
    Set oMyDataStore = Navigator.ConnectDataStoreByParameter ("TOC", "" & "C:\Program Files (x 86) \National 2012\Examples\Data\Example_data.tdm" & "" ')
    Set oMyProperties = oMyDataStore.RootElements (1). Properties
    For each MyProperty in oMyProperties
    MyProperty.DataType = eTime Then
    Call MsgBoxDisp ("property name:" & MyProperty.Name & + "\n"&"property value:" & MyProperty.Value. ' ") VariantDate)
    On the other
    Call MsgBoxDisp ("property name:" & MyProperty.Name & + "\n"&"property value:" & MyProperty.Value "")
    End If
    Next

    I hope this helps.

  • Connection to the AOP with several NIC data store

I have a situation where I need to have the computer that is running the tiara to be connected to two different networks.  I have two NIC installed in the machine, NIC A and B NIC, we will call them.  The reason for this is that I use Diadem to access the server on a machine of AVL PUMA AO.  If I connect to the local network PUMA, PUMA sometimes breaks down, probably something to do with the IP address.  So PUMA has need to be on a network that is not a router.  My tiara computer must communicate with PUMA, as well as with local shared drives on our corporate network.

In any case, I have the company LAN hung on A NIC and hung on NIC B PUMA network.  Tiara fails to connect when the two networks are connected, but connects to the data store no problem when that network PUMA is hung. Any ideas how to solve this problem?  It seems tiara is looking for NIC - A instead of NIC B, as appropriate.

For reference, when the two NIC is connected, I can access other than readers, and separate computers to ping on both networks, without problem, is not a connection problem.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    -Russ

I guess poth NIC have different IP.

-Did you use IP instead of the server name.

-Do you use RPC or CORBA to access the PUMA Server?

    -What version of DIAdem.

You can create a log file when the connection has failed?

    Greetings

  • Need help with a Citadel of DIAdem data store opening.

    Hello

I was wondering if someone can help me to connect to a Citadel of DIAdem data store. I've read all the online help and cannot operate.

On my PC, I use DIAdem v11.1 and v6.1 Lookout installed as a plugin. I am trying to connect to a data of Citadel store 5 on a server visible in the image below, specifically the default database on HPSERVER1. The installation of MAX on HPSERVER1 tells me that there are 2 versions of LabVIEW Run-Time installed, 8.2.1 and 9.0.1 (I don't know if this is relevant).

When I select \\hpserver1\default_database, I then set the properties as follows:

In the Advanced section, I'm the deadline set to 90 seconds. When I hit OK, then I get the following message, which then brings back me to the previous screen.

    Any help is very appreciated,

    David.

    Hi David,

6.2 Lookout CLIENT is for people who do not have installed Lookout but still want to connect to a database of Citadel with DIAdem.  This works for databases Citadel created by Lookout as long as those created by LabVIEW DCS, is said by the way.

In your case, you have already installed Lookout, you don't need this additional client software.  There is no improvement in functionality in this interface between 6.1 and 6.2, so you do not miss anything, and youre data import is already working.

I don't know about lookout not appearing is not in the License Manager, etc.  I'm sorry.

  • Getting property of type 'Date' from a PDO data store

It is therefore a question of both parties.  Part A: when I search for data in a data store, to find data by using the object Navigator returns the correct number of results, using the object. GetElementList does not work.  I'm looking in the data store for steps created between a certain date (using the iStartTime property).  It seems that they must return the same results.  Please see part A of my code pasted below.  Any suggestions?  Perhaps it is - that it is related to part B of my question.

Part b: iStartTime property is the data type 30, or of type Date.  When I try to access the value of the property of iStartTime I got an error stating that ' the object does not support this property or method ".  Is there a special way to get the value of a property when the property is a date?

    Any suggestion would be appreciated!

Sorry, I've replaced iStartTime by measurement_begin to make it work on my local database :-)

The point is that the syntax of GetElementList is the following

    "iStartTime > = 20121201033; iStartTime<>

When converting a CDate to str it cause string locale-dependent.

But the suggestion would be to use the

Dim query: query = oMyDataStore.CreateQuery set

instead of the query string. Because he avoid conversion errors. Be aware that even a double value to a string in Germany for example will convert a written decimal number while the stringquery expects at this point notation.

    Set MyElementList = oMyDataStore.GetElementList ("Action", "measurement_begin > =" & RTT (StartDate, "#YYYYMMDDhhnnss") & ") measurement_begin<=" &="">

    must provide correct results.

  • Search by wildcard characters in the data store

I'm trying to search with a wildcard in a PDO data store.

    This produces a result:

Back EMF Date: time 2012-08-20: 14:16:04

    But that does not

    Return *.

How can I use wildcards in a search for data store?

I guess that all of the following conditions must create correct results

Dim query: query set = store. CreateQuery
    query. ReturnType = "measure".
query. Conditions.Add 'Measure', 'name', 'is', ' back. "
    store. Search (Query)

store. GetElementList ("Action", "name = % rear", true)

store. GetElementList ("Action", "name = back *", false)

store. GetElementList ("Action", "name = back *")

Please take into account the fact that the PDO does not support case-insensitive query.

I assume you are using an AVL Puma. You may need to set a switch in advanced the PDO connection dialog box. 'Use as instead of GAME'.

In the connection setting, it appears as

    YES
