  Because the printer is able to scan from HP and Microsoft paint software then the problem you are having is with the Adobe Acrobat 9 software. My first suggestion would be to uninstall the program and then reinstall it to see if the problem persists. If you still have the same problem, you need to contact Adobe technical support.

  Acrobat 9 is quite old and not longer supported. The last Windows OS that could use Acrobat 9 has Windows 7 and Acrobat had to have all updates applied.

They signed for this coming Sunday for Acrobat Pro DC class and the class requires that they install the trial of Acrobat Pro DC. No one has me until today.   There is not acrobat reader pro. There is acrobat pro (costs money and you have a serial number) and adobe reader (free and no series number).
