Remove the My Documents Windows.old folder

I tried unsuccessfully to delete the windows.old folder and files. I used cleaning disc, using the rd as an administrator, even went safe mode but all without success. It is said several times that I'm not allowed to delete many files. Any help would be greatly appreciated this folder takes over 12 GB of my drive.

Here is another method that I found for you. It seems to fit to your not having is not the scenario of permission. Open the link below, the 1st half is not good because you have already tried it.
Scroll down the page until you see:
Alternatively, you can also use a command prompt to delete files and folders from an earlier installation of Windows Vista.
Start from there. Here is the link : http://www.winvistaclub.com/f36.html

Note: in case you don't know what's guest...
Start button > Search box, type cmd > right click on cmd.exe in the upper part, click Run as administrator.
Now, try to follow the instructions in the link.
Important: You will be asked to 'type' a few lines of command... Do not.
Copy and paste the command line instead of the
.
Good luck.

I've never had to do. If you have any problem with the instructions, I may or may not be able to help.
Just to let you know.

    Hello

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community Forums.

No need to worry, we're here to help you and guide you in the right direction.

The windows.old folder is the old system files. Be sure to copy all the files that you can out of the Windows.old folder before you delete it. Once deleted, they are gone. You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps.

The Windows.old folder contains the following folders:

    • Windows
    • "Documents and Settings".
    • "Program Files."

The Windows folder stores mainly programs and files that are required to run the previous version of Windows.

The "Documents and Settings" folder stores mainly the 'My Documents' folder and the Favorites folder. In addition, the "Documents and Settings" folder stores the office files that have been used by the previous version of Windows.

The "Program Files" folder stores mainly programs have been installed on the earlier version of Windows.

There are two ways to delete the windows.old folder. Here is the simple step.

Method 1: Delete the C drive.

    (a) open Windows Explorer, click computer.

    (b) select C drive and you will find the Windows.old folder.

    (c) make a right click on the folder and click Remove.

Method 2: Remove the "Windows.old" folder using disk cleanup

    (a) open Disk Cleanup by clicking on the button Windows + C to open the bar of charms. Click on the charm of the Search .

    (b) type cleanmgr in Search Applications box in the right pane, and then click cleanmgr.exe (disk cleanup) in the left pane to open it.

    (c) If you are prompted to choose a drive, click the drive that you have just installed Windows on and then click OK.

    (d) in the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, click clean up system files.

    (e) If you are again prompted to choose a drive, click the drive that you have just installed Windows on and then click OK.

    (f) select the Previous Windows installations check box and the other check boxes for files that you want to remove, and then click OK.

    (g) in the message that appears, click delete files.

  • Why Windows 8 allow me to remove the Windows.old folder?

I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 to Windows 8, a few months ago, when Windows 8 came. It is my understanding that when you perform an upgrade of Windows from one version to the other, it can save a lot of files and folders under the folder Windows.old. And I understand that you can delete the Windows.old folder.

In other words, I don't think.

The reason why I do not think it is because whenever I tried to delete Windows.old, it stops for me with this error:

  • I had to install a fresh install of Win7 on a Win7 computer. Old settings are in the Windows.old folder. How can I migrate the old settings for new install?

I tried to 'upgrade' a Win7 installation using a valid Win7 upgrade CD. Because the current version is newer than the CD, it would not be upgraded. I created an installation on the old HDD. All my old programs are still on the HARD drive. I have the Windows.old folder on the HARD disk. I backed up the My Documents folder with all my data. It is now restored. I need to get the old registry settings in the registry again so I did not reinstall all my programs. How can I do this?

Unfortunately, you will need to reinstall all your programs from their original installation discs.

What you should have done was to download a current copy of the edition of Windows 7, you have a license for Service Pack 1 integrated and do an upgrade of the repair.

Unfortunately, it's too late now, since you seem to have done a custom installation.

    Hi Conner,

Thanks for keeping us posted and share this information with us.

As Palcouk suggested, you can remove the "Windows.old" folder if you have saved data on the computer.

It is not possible for the drive to shrink. I would like you to check the amount of space on the hard disk after you remove the Windows.old folder.

Let us know if you have other questions about Windows in the future. We will be happy to help you.

  • The windows.old folder can be moved to the Windows folder?

I did a reinstall on Windows 7 registry problems, I've had with the preview of the 2013 Office. When I did reinstall on WIndows 7, it created a WIndows.Old folder that stores all my documents, program files and everything. I also have a WIndows folder above that. If the Windows.Old folder can be moved to the Windows folder or separate them? Microsoft Office is also in the Windows.Old folder.

If you have all this work and you have all the files you need - completely erase the Windows.OLD folder.

If it makes you feel better - copy the machine completely for more security instead.

In other words - once you have everything works as you like and know sure you miss not all the files - you don't need the windows.old folder at all.
