  I have a SP 4280 and the original hard drive on it does not have earlier. I bought a Hitachi Travelstar 5K 100 40 GB replacement, but I can't seem to make it work. FDisk recognizes the disc as a 40 GB drive and seems to format the drive. However, attempts to write anything to generate results in an error message "invalid media".

  To be honest I don't know what to do, you mean with standard HARD disk. The fact is that you must use compatible HARD drive for your laptop model.   I don t think there is something wrong with the IDE controller. Fact is that the BIOS do not show simple partitions but only whole HARD disk size.
  I put t know how you tried to format the HARD disk or to create partitions on this disk HARD but in fact different OS uses the standards of different format and this may the reason for your problems!

  I think you should try to boot from the original Windows XP CD. Let's launch the setup and format the whole HARD drive and erase all partitions!
  I noticed that Toshiba recovery CD couldn t runs correctly on wrong formatted HDD!
