Retrieve deleted VM Workstation

Pressed to clean up a partition for the space, I was able to remove a vmware VM which is very important for my kids and i. (very bad by me )

I'm using vmware workstation 8.

I used "Recover My Files" and retrieved what looks like the missing files from the VM, but initially they were recorded as modified versions of the original files, i.e. files names were slightly changed:-

for example, r2d2-0_vmdk. TXT

So I renamed the files which I think is their exact names.

e.g. r2d2 - 0.vmdk

Then I first run the r2d2.vmx file and got the following error: -.

Could not open virtual machine: K:\recovered_files_3\Virtual Machines\XP_VM\r2d2.vmx

Dictionary problem.

I discovered that I needed to remove the file r2d2.vmsd that snapshot was taken the previous info. After deleting this file, vmware has created a new and virtual machine appeared in vmware in the shutdown state.

When I tried to turn on the virtual machine I got this error: -.

Unable to open file "K:\recovered_files_3\Virtual Machines\XP_VM\r2d2-0.vmdk": One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or by a snapshot.

And that's where I'm stuck. Any help how to get this virtual machine running again would be very appreciated.

There seems to be some problems.

  • A lot of error messages about a corrupted virtual disk ('disk must be repaired")
  • The VM consisted initially of 2 virtual drives, but the first 'r2d2.vmdk' with ~85.5GB is missing!
  • The .vmx file contains entries for 2 virtual drives, pointing to the second "r2d2 - 0.vmdk', that you have restored. However, scsi0:0 should point to the virtual disk currently lack.

Unless you can recover the virtual disk missing "r2d2.vmdk" (which is a single file), your options are limited. What you try to do is to mount the virtual drive restored to the host using the file-> virtual disk map... in VMware Workstation menu to see if you can at least retrieve important data.

    If you emptied the Recycle Bin after you move the folder to the trash, and you don't have a time Machine or another backup, then it is lost, sorry.

    Hello - if you deleted your projects (as opposed to simply cancel publishing them), they are not recoverable. If you don't have everything simply unique, you can repubish hovering over the coverage of the project and choosing "publish."

    I work for a small business that keeps all our files very important (relevant to the management of the company) on an external server.     If the files were not saved, then no, you can't recover their backup.

    In regard to retrieve them from the server itself, it is impossible to say that we have no idea of what past or what condition the disks used to store the actual data are in.

    You can engage a data recovery service, which will cost some serious $$$, but if the data is really important, it's what you need to do.

    The saved project may be retrieved using the deleted items in the email account, depending on the e-mail program you use. But if you made any changes on the saved project, and then, these changes can be recovered.
