Reviews for laboratory at home: Q9300, 8 GB DDR3, 1 TB SATA, 1 Gigabit NIC memory

Given this machine for $620 (delivered) by grazing web.  That would be enough for ESXi and vCenter Openfiler?  Seems that I should be able to get at least the majority of the running vSphere components.  It would be a complement to a better job laboratory machine lot.

If you motherboard a good chipset, maybe you can also test VMDirectPath (chech for compatible with VT - d chipset).

On the RAM, that could be enough to operate 2 ESXi, vCenter a small and small VMs system... but, if you can, give 10 or 12 GB.

A teddy bear unique is a limit, but you can work with it. Maybe look for a switch supporting at least VLAN.

    I just started my CCENT class and so I try to create a laboratory that is separate from my LAN House, initially using a blank Superhub and a Cisco 1841 router.  Please keep in mind that I am a beginner, so it may not make sense or be completely illogical...

    The superhub for those who don't know, is a renamed netgear, limit VMDG480.  It's basically a cable modem and router wireless combined.

    The normal daily LAN side of the network was the default installation to receive an IP address via DHCP from the superhub in range 192.168.0.1/24.

    At first, I thought I could put things in preparation for my lab installation, by configuring the LAN subnet using 192.168.0.0 and superhub of/16 mask rank for my 'everyday' network and 192.168.1.0 rank for my "laboratory at home." (Good or bad?...)

    Unfortunately, I'm unable to do so because the superhub only allows the last byte in the mask to be changed, so I changed the mask and it now reads 255.255.255.128, with the idea that I can always have 2 separate networks.

    In the photo above you can see devices on the right side are all directly related to the superhub and continue to work as usual.

    On the left side is where I've implemented a Cisco 1841 router and a laptop computer to test.

    The details of each device are;

    Blank Superhub
    LAN:192.168.0.1
    The DHCP scope: 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.126

    Cisco 1841
    Fast Ethernet 0/1: 192.168.0.126
    255.255.255.128

    Fast Ethernet 0/0: 192.168.0.129
    255.255.255.128

    PC2 (mobile wired connected to FE 0/0)
    IP: 192.168.0.200
    255.255.255.128
    Default gateway: 192.168.0.126 (the address IP of Cisco 1841)

    1841 router:

    int fa0/0 (interface connected to the hub)
    IP 192.168.0.126 255.255.255.0

    IP nat inside

    NAT configuration:

    access-list 1 permit 172.16.0.0 0.0.255.255
    IP nat inside source list 1 interface fa0/0 overload

    Add a default route:
    IP route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 (so your router knows where to forward DNS queries to 8.8.8.8)

    Connect your 3560 to the second port on the router and configure a trunk on the switch port and add vlan 2:

    int fa0/0 (connected to the 1841 router)
    switch to trunk encapsulation dot1q
    mode trunk switch

    VLAN 2
    name Home_Lab

    Connect your PC to the second switchport and add vlan2:

    int fa0/1
    access mode switch
    access switch vlan 2
    No tap

    Finally, give your PC an address in the subnet of vlan 2:

    IP: 172.16.0.2
    Mask: 255.255.0.0
    Gateway: 172.16.0.1
    DNS: 8.8.8.8

    You should be able to ping the address of the router on the subnet in 172.16.x.x 192.x.x.x. I don't have a Virgin hub to test this, but it worked well with two 1841 routers.

    I'm having a problem that makes me nuts and I was wondering if you can help me with this.

    While trying to set up a laboratory at home (I think it's often referred to a "white box" system)? I don't get the operational ESXi installation. For three days, I was not able to install ESXi.

    Problem:

    ESXi 5.5U3 installation fails and immediately restarts the host until it starts doing anything... specific.

    Using IPMI my motherboard I recorded (and also attached) a video and tried to integrate it here:

    For those who do not see the host starts and begins to extract the files in memory. When he goes to the grey-yellow screen it shows the following lines and then - BOOM - restarts the host and it again:

  • Question of laboratory network home

    I recently acquired a couple of HP DL360 G4s and a NAS I think to support NFS and want to set up a laboratory at home using ESXi 4.1. I also acquired a couple of NIC dual port to add to the servers for additional physical network adapters. I'm a bit confused on the side network, I do not have a GBit 8 port switch I could connect all this, but it is unmanaged and that means no configuration of VLAN. How can I make this work if I want to put the SIN in NFS on my network with internet access?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    .. Since I have a switch and can not do VLAN for the time being, I have several uplinks on the standard vSwitch connected to the same subnet?

    As long as you use the 'Road' default vSwitch strategy based on the source port id, it should work.

    I am new to vmware and am enrolled in the vSpere Install & Configure course.  I'm looking to set up a small home convenient to study for the exam lab.  One can tell me if the following server would be enough to set up a small laboratory of loading 3-4 vm servers.  I would not do much with them.  Just install configure and play with some of the vmware tools.  The servers themselves wouldn't have Windows Server or Linux software installed on them.  Nothing major, just something to practice and get used to the vmware tools.

    It is a server that I can pick up cheap.  I realize, he can be timid on the ability of the HD, but I have a lot of additional readers, that I can use to flesh out this part.

    Your server should work perfectly, a little less memory, but it should work to test just the things and play arround.

    As you prepare for the VCP that I suggest, you should consider getting a second server like this one, just to have all the features like HA, DRS etc. available.

    If this is not possible, try to use an ESX Server, within a facility of vmware workstation on a fast machine with enough memory and a processor who must take care of Intel-VT

    You should also think about a NAS or best iSCSI device, test vmotion and svmotion. HP Lefthand for ESX demo should do the job very well.

    I doubt that you can get 64-bit drivers for Windows XP for this laptop from the Toshiba driver page.
    I didn t find drivers for Windows XP 64 bits for Toshiba laptops.
    Why? I think the Win XP 64 bit was not so popular like Win XP 32 bit and most of the applications have been designed for XP 32 bit OS.

    If install you XP 64-bit on this computer, you will have to look in the various 3rd party Web sites for the compatible drivers

    Hello.  About all of the weeks I have my upload computer files from one day to the next.  It's a 17-hour process, and I don't want the computer off or restarted during this process.  Murphy's law usually results in an update windows & restart related happening whenever I put my computer to download said.  First of all, it is deeply annoying that windows would reboot my computer without asking me (Yes, I realize he asks you, and if you are away for an extended period, he just goes ahead and does it... but really, what the $#! % is the point of asking you if she goes ahead and that anyway when you get him just enough early?)  Wow!  Incredibly retarted the Windows for this.)  But anyway, how can I disable this for Win7 Home Premium?  (As if in the first place is not quite annoying, making it virtually impossible to figure out how to turn it off is like adding insult to injury).  Please NOTE, I've seen some other forum post responses on this site that is: (1) link to an information page on the group policies for system administrators, but nowhere does really explain where and how to access these policies and change them!  (2) has a process that begins with 'gpedit.msc' running, but when I started > box to search for this file, there is no result.  (3) the hacking the registry (seriously?  Please, don't.)  SO, please tell me how to disable the auto restart, step by step, without messing with the registry, for WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM.  Ideally, I'd like to be able to potentially re - activate cela in the future and/or switches back as my usage dictates.  And for the record, it's nut that's not a simple option toggle any, as when my computer or monitor sleeps...  Thank you!!

    Thank you.  I'll do it and change my Windows Update settings.  BUT, FYI, in an act even more incredible, the same night I posted my question here, my computer was said upload, and I was still in place at 03:00 (when Windows is set to d/l and install updates).  I went to the kitchen for a bit and returned to my computer to find a countdown - he downloaded updates and "will re-start in 7 minutes" or so and counting down... I said "AH HA!"  I caught you! "I clicked the button of REPORTER and went to bed smiling that I myself had saved wasting many hours of work.  But when I woke up the next morning... HE HAD DONE IT AGAIN!  This means that it is: (1) downloaded another "critic" (cough) update later in the evening, which seems likely because it took to do this at 03:00 and had already done so... or (2) the REPORTER button defers only during a certain period of time (maybe an hour, or even less, by the look of it) and then do it again anyway.

    This is ridiculous.  As it is not ridiculous to called 9 10 patches 'critical', so critical that an urgent restarting your computer is necessary EVEN IF HE is BUSY WORKING, the substitution of the computer user asks to postpone and reboot anyway is absolutely unacceptable.  How the manufacturers of Windows might think this makes sense, let alone was a good idea?  Reporter should make the computer restarts DO NOT until * I * say he is allowed to do.
