RVS4000 selective loss of DNS queries

Is there a configuration option or a known bug that would cause a selective RVS4000 or garble queries DNS

coming on the LAN side by side WAN, yet allow HTTP, SSH and Ping through without problem?  I think I have

very strong evidence that this problem is due to my new satellite ISP, but they insist on sound ' beause router DNS

requests go by with the deleted router.  The same router, configuration and complete the installation has worked with my

old cable ISP.

After a lot of frustration (because of the EFAH05W be incorrectly labeled a 'hub',

When he is in fact a switch and thus will not support the packet sniffing), I am set me up

with Wireshark, an old, borrowed hub and a portable separate sniffing

packs from the side WAN.  Good DNS responses were indeed

Since name servers, but the RVS4000 was rejecting, return a

ICMP MOUSSOKI 'no such port' for the name server.  I thought that the router has calendar

its NAT rule when connected via satellite (which has round-trip latency

of about 1.3 sec.)  After not finding no way to reconfigure the RVS4000 to hold the

NAT rules any longer, I tried the Netgear RP614v4, just because that was what they had

for the local store.  Which corrects the problem.

(I tried this other router earlier and DNS worked but HTTP has failed.  Must

were the experimental errors, everything works now.)

  • How to remove DNS queries for banned sites?

    Hello

I'm looking to create a certain number of signatures to DNS queries for banned sites, the only way I've implemented successfully is to create a signature (string UDP), so he abandons all traffic UDP 53 containing the banned site regex string.

I would like clarification from the experts to verify that this is the only way to do this, I know that there is a DNS Service engine, but I can't specify the COMPLETE domain name in this context. I don't know if I am missing something?

    Thank you very much

You are on the right track. A personal signature of UDP is the only way you will find the applications that you want to remove.

The DNS engine does not allow for the custom string matches.

  • UDP associated with DNS queries

I'm transferring the IP tables to the firewall access PIX501 list rules.

In our IP table rules, we have implemented rules udp to protest the DNS:

    $IPTABLES - a udp_chains Pei d 158.152.1.13 udp - dport 53 - m state - State NEW-j ACCEPT

    $IPTABLES - a udp_chains Pei udp s 158.152.1.13 - sport 53 m state - state ESTABLISHED, RELATED-j ACCEPT

But when I try to implement the same rule in the PIX firewall, I can't find any syntax that I can use for specified state. Is it possible to do in PIX?

Also, I noticed PIX firewall act as a protector of the domain name system (DNS). It seems that the firewall will automatically handle udp associated with DNS queries. It means that I need not implement these rules I mentioned above at all?

    Hello

The Cisco PIX has built warning DNS, so no, you won't have to configure your IP channels.

    Keep DNS:

DNS guard identifies an outgoing DNS query request and allows only one DNS returned to the sender. A host can query multiple servers for an answer where the first server is slow to respond; However, only the first answer to the specific question is allowed in. All additional responses from other servers are removed. After the client issues a DNS query, a dynamic translation allows packets UDP return from the DNS server. The default UDP timer expires in two minutes. DNS is often attacked, leaving open for two minutes translation creates an unnecessary risk. DNS guard is enabled by default and cannot be configured or disabled. DNS guard performs the following actions:

Upon receipt of the DNS response, automatically pull the UDP translation on the PIX firewall. It does not wait for the timer default UDP log.

Warns against the diversion of UDP session and denial of service (DoS) attacks.

The PIX does not support IP chain rules, you will need to configure ACLs.

Hope this helps, and if it please note post.

  • WRT1900AC: It can block DNS queries?

    Hello

WRT1900AC DNS block can request devices on a home network to the public DNS service like GoogleDNS? Can someone tell me what are the steps needed to achieve this?

I tried to follow the instructions found on the web but I couldn't add static routes under Advanced Routing, I got errors, either on the subpattern network or gateway (mine is 192.168.1.1 and is not accepted). I do not know what to enter in these areas and also what Interface to select (LAN / wireless or Internet).

    My firmware version is 1.1.8.164461.

    I'd appreciate any help.

    Hello

Thanks for the reply. I have not contacted the support still to confirm the suspicion you, my cable modem is a Motorola SB6141. I did some basic research that indicates that he is not capable of NAT.

However, I was able to configure a static route in my router, using the cable modem IP asgateway. After that, my requests to ping to the Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) began to fail. It is probably still not what I need. I don't understand why I can't save the IP of my router as gateway as described here: http://help.unotelly.com/support/solutions/articles/193662-setup-static-routes-on-linksys-and-cisco-... This link of alerts to a bug in the Linksys routers but I get the error message is not "invalid static route", as indicated.

  • RVS4000 disabling IPS kills DNS

Background: I recently bought a couple of routers RVS4000 put in place a VPN between my home and office. Initial setup went great and I got the VPN works with dynamic DNS at both ends quite easily. The only problem was that the performance sucked bad. my ISP gives me 45 MB/s and one see frequently in both directions of test of speed and SFTP on other servers sites, and they plan to upgrade our building at 100 Mb/s next month. With the RVS4000 in place I usually go down 12 MB/s in download and 7 Mbps. no problem, I thought. I read that most performance problems from the intrusion prevention have to look at each package. So I turned off the SPI...

Problem: The problem I have is that if I turn off the IPS and DNS breaks on each computer on the network :-( Look-up go so slowly that my web browsers frequently time out. If I have somewhere access by IP address, then all is well and the flow of the router is acceptable (I see 28 MB/s, I actually managed to resolve the address of a speed test server). Unfortuantely this didn't do me much good if I do not have DNS. I restored the factory setting for a router and then carried out tests after each step of the configuration. Everything was fine until I turn off the IPS. I then restored to factory State, confirmed everything was fine and nothing else except the IPS; When I disabled it IPS DNS died once again!

Question: Is there a work around for this? I pay for 100 M/s wiring between my home and office and with the active IPS I'm lose 90% of the performance. If I disable the IPS, the unit is essentially useless. Help! Any suggestion is welcome. If I can't solve this problem, soon the routers will have to return it for a refund.

V 1.3.0.5 firmware is now available for download here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9928/index.html.

    Hello

I have a problem with the local domain name resolution when connected via a VPN SSL using anyconnect.

I've identified it is due to the fact that the assigned DHCP DNS is not by adding a domain suffix.

I proved this by adding the local domain after the host name, I'm ping.

On the the ASA5505 ASDM I ensured that the appropriate field is identified on the DNS, but this still does not work.

Please could someone guide me in the right direction. It should be on the profile that is downloaded or a configuration that automatically adds the correct suffix when DNS queries are sent to the DNS server.

    Hi again,

I just figured my DNS suffix name resolution problem and I thought I'd share my solution in case it helps you:

    • Connect to ASDM, select VPN remote access, expand access to the network (Client), highlight the group policies.
    • On the right, edit the group policy that you connect your remote users.
    • Screen that comes up, highlight the server on the left and then click on the small arrow to the right to display other editing options in group policy.
    • Fill in the default domain with your internal domain name (for example, mydomainname.local)
    • Click Ok to save and save config to Flash running.

Test of reconnection to with a client AnyConnect and performing a ipconfig/all.

For me, I can now see the suffix dns that I defined in the group policy and successfully, I can ping internal hosts by name.

    Good luck!

  • DNS services using data much more than before with iOS 10?

    Hello

I have upgraded to iOS 10, since the GM became available.

A few days ago I noticed a spike in my use of the data on the report of my career, and I went to check on the iPhone, which was the cause. To my surprise, the culprit was DNS Services. The 515 MB I had used since the last reset (I have reset the same day as my service provider, on September 13) 466 MB were the DNS Services.

On the carrier app I see that there are seven 16 490 MB consumed, compared with an average of 15 to 20Mb per day. So I guess that most of these 466 MB were made that day.

466 MB of DNS queries are now something like 5 billion queries. Without WiFi connectivity, I was this day a total of 90 minutes maybe. Now, I did not use the iPhone except to listen to music (60 minutes walking the dog, another 30 on the car). I can't figure out how or what makes these applications.

I reset network settings that day and things were back to "normal". Except that today ' today I see that there is an another 20 MB of queries DNS deployed since the 16th century. 20 MB of DNS request are always * a * much.

Has anyone else noticed a greater amount of DNS requests with 10 iOS?

Now the weird part is that everything was normal before the 16th century. And I installed the GM the day, it was released (which was... 1 week or two before?) and I were on the betas since weeks before. I can't remember or see something different or special made 16. A few days earlier, IIRC, there are a few updates to the carrier, but why or how, which would produce an increase in DNS queries?

I tried to speak with the Apple Support, but the girl I mentioned with just told me incorrect and illogical things and got offended when I asked if she knew what a DNS query and closed the chat session. I guess I won't get any help there.

Just for comparison: iPhone from a friend a total of 6.1 MB of DNS services for almost a year of use. I'm sure that the values will be around that mark if someone check their info.

So, is it possible to follow what requests have been made (by which App, or what name has been resolved) so I can try to locate it?

I'm trying to restore the iPhone, hoping that things will return to normal, but without knowing what and why it happened there is just a long shot.

  • Firefox seems to be ignoring DNS TTL and DNS resolved cache indefinitely

    Hello

Since we started to serve our js and css by CloudFront a few weeks ago, we started to see a problem with Firefox, where these goods would not sometimes be charged.

So far, the only way I could reproduce the problem has been to load our home page in the afternoon, without closing my browser and then refresh the page the next day morning. I know it's pretty extreme, but some customers reported this problem, which means that it happens in both real life scenarios. We have been able to reproduce it on Windows and OSX from our office in New York and Krakow, Poland.

I used Firebug to track down this problem and it seems that Firefox is ignoring the TTL of DNS queries when looking for URLS and caches them almost indefinitely. Due to the constant rotation of the CloudFront servers, after enough time the cached IP address server unresponsive and all applications are abandoned (applications abandoned on the screenshots). That sounds like a plausible explanation? Has anyone have the same problem and has a solution for this?

  • DNS server records to monitor traffic.

I do not understand much about it so I hope someone can explain to me.

I have a server configured with a DNS server running successfully on my mac mini (dns primary server for the House).

I was wondering if there is a way to capture the DNS server logs and monitor visited Web sites of specific host ips/name?

I don't have an example to make immediately available, and I expect that it will be the analysis or an output channel created manually or otherwise searching the DNS server connects.

If your firewall blocks all outgoing DNS traffic except for DNS queries on the server (this is to avoid without entering the DNS server, register via VPN or other), you can turn on extra logging through the command line, and then check the DNS server logs.

This configuration is probably more commonly implemented with either a network sniffer I look for DNS queries arriving at your server, or perhaps a web proxy server, as this proxy server gets you the customer information and the target host information, as it won't be all kinds of activities related to the web-is in the DNS for a typical client newspapers.

Activity network Apps, app updates (various which may seem HTTPS traffic, too), multiple streams of data, etc.

HTTPS and VPN can throw a key in these listening and data collection activities, unfortunately.  They can hide the access or hide the DNS query, according to the monitored computers.

There are approaches especially here, including the firewall of filtering (or notation) and the mechanisms of OS X such as Parental controls, depending on the specific details of your needs here.    There are examples posted around the network to use Wireshark or tcpdump to acquire the DNS of your network data, as well.

Details on the management of the BIND 9 command line - i.e. when there is hair - are available in the ISC BIND documentation, such as 9.10.  Find statement grammar and record the setting up an output channel, as a starting point.

For recent versions of OS X Server, BIND configuration files are under/Library/Server.  (See this discussion, as well.)

Changes to the configuration files can sometimes fail.app, unfortunately.   Close.app, make the changes to a copy of the file, then restart.app (and I hope Server.app don't spill or undo your changes).

  • I put two new DNS on my iMac, but don't know why!

The story is a little complicated. We bought a stick of ROKU and installed in our HDTV. We had continuous problems with streaming. To halfway through most of what we were looking at a status bar 'recovery' presented and crawl slowly until towards the end a message informed us that the program could be is over looked. I went back with CS ROKU and they offered several fixes. After being annoyed for probably the last time technology has suggested I go into my iMac Preferences > network > add DNS and select two new DNS sites which recommended. He believed that this was the problem. So I did this and tested the ROKU streaming three hours but this time without any buffering.

I don't know exactly how applying these two new sites DNS on my Mac is to correct the problem and whether it will continue to provide the cure. Anyone know?

DNS is usually assigned by your ISP, however, there may be cases where using third-party DNS settings are beneficial. Roku is a third-party product, you should contact Roku if you having problems using their product. Personally, we use the Apple TV in my house and have had no problems.

If you want to learn more about what DNS is, I recommend Googling and you'll find a variety of items available. A good starting point is

  • Time Capsule (TC) does not correctly handle DNS

    Hello

I had several cases where all devices to maintain connectivity to the router, but lose Internet connectivity.  I see now that there is a DNS problem.  I don't know what default operation is because I don't want to restart my TC at the moment, but what I get on my iMac for DNS is the address of the router - which is the default operation, and then the router manages transmission of DNS queries?  Or am I supposed to get the public address of DNS to my ISP?  If I manually set the public DNS to my ISP addresses - all right, but obviously, I shouldn't do this and it should be handled by DHCP - and I don't want to do this for all of my devices.  Thank you.

But what I get on my iMac for DNS is the address of the router - is that the operation by default, then the router manages transmission of DNS queries?

If you have the time Capsule set up as the main router on your network that provides DHCP and NAT services, then by default that he get the DNS servers of your ISP.  You can see these servers easily by a simple click on the globe in AirPort Utility... or... you can check the Internet settings inside for the time Capsule AirPort Utility.

When your Mac is picking up DNS of the time Capsule, it simply means that it takes up the same Internet servers that the Time Capsule sits by your ISP.

Or am I supposed to get the public address of DNS to my ISP?

N ° if you manually entered in the information in the network settings of the Mac, you would see only the public DNS servers. There is really no reason to do so, given that the Mac is picking up the same servers for the Time Capsule to recover anyway.  But, you might do this if you want.

Step 1.     I signed out and signed him as a guest - user will understand - works Safari very well! Then I logged as Clive Lake, and it crashed immediately, would not start or start and with the same message...

Step 2.     I rebooted in safe mode after unplugging all devices: No go I'm afraid... I tried several times and I'm actually still in safe mode.

It would seem that something I did in my profile caused the problem.

Any advice about where to go from here would be appreciated.

    Concerning

    Clive L.

iMac (21.5 inch, at the end of 2013)

    OS X v10.11.1

    3.1 GHz Intel Core i7

    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

    NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1024Mo

Run the Console application in one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first letters of his name in a Spotlight search. Select from the results (it should be at the top).

☞ In the Finder, select go utilities ▹ of menu bar or press the combination of keys shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    Step 1

For this step, the title of the Console window should be all Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ all Messages

in the list of logs on the left. If you don't see this list, select

List of newspapers seen ▹ display

in the menu at the top of the screen bar.

In the upper right corner of the Console window, there is a search box to filter. Enter the name of the application crashed or process. For example, if Safari has crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes).

Each message in the journal begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages since the time of the last fall, as appropriate. Copy to the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command + V.

The journal contains a large amount of information, almost everything that is not relevant to solve a particular problem. When you post a journal excerpt, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't dump blindly thousands of lines in the journal in this discussion.

Please do not post screenshots of log messages - text poster.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    Step 2

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSIS AND diagnostic USE information reports ▹ user

(not diagnose them and use Messages) in the list of logs on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points downwards. You will see a list of reports of incidents. The name of each report begins with the name of the process and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report on the process in question. The content of the report is displayed at right. Allows you to copy and paste to validate all of the content, text, not a screenshot.

I know that the report is long, perhaps several hundred lines. Please report all this anyway.

If you don't see any report, but you know, he had an accident, you have chosen diagnostic and using the list of Log Messages. INFORMATION on the USE of DIAGNOSTIC AND choose instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you change the UUID ' anonymous, ' a long string of letters, numbers and dashes in the header of the report, if it is present (it cannot be). "

Please do not post other types of diagnostic report - they are very long and rarely useful.

When you post the journal excerpt or the accident report, you might see an error message on the web page: "you have included content in your post that is not allowed", or "the message contains invalid characters." It's a bug in the forum software. Thanks for posting the text on Pastebin, then post here a link to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please do not select private in exposure menu to paste on the page, because no one else that you will be able to see it.

  • Requirement of DNS and DHCP Server Essentials 2012 home

I have a Server Windows Essentials 2012 acting as DNS and DHCP server with a domain name for backups etc on my home network. It's that everything works fine, no errors, no problem. Works well actually, telling me when the children did not install updates or restarted.

I have two groups of users. My sons step, 10 and 12, which I want to use OpenDNS as a provider external DNS with a policy very, very limited and my wife and me who want to use indications of root or Google DNS or any other DNS provider. Others, specific devices no user (box of the xBox, WII, Satellite, TV, CCTV etc.) can use.

Before the 2012 server, I had a 2 k 3 server running in a virtual machine for DHCP, alone and put my wife and my devices on static reservations with the just and external DNS provider used OpenDNS as the default scope, DNS. Unfortunately different bits of domain services 2012 don't seem to work unless the server of 2012 is the first DNS server listed on client machines (backups failed. Impossible to find other local computers). Currently, this means that we are all using OpenDNS.

What I would like is a way to say 2012 to send adult group DNS queries to another DNS provider and leave the rest at default to OpenDNS, while still having them register in the original DNS domain. Any suggestions?
