Satellite M40X White appears

Hello

I am an advanced pc user and have served this Toshiba my main computer for about 1.5years now. Today while I have Windows XP extract me some files for school and I got up @ the tv (watching television at the time, had the laptop on my knees well ventilated) and down to the laptop computer and all I saw was this white screen and hard drive activity / processor lighthouse was lit constantly.

I put the box hard drive up to my ear and I heard vigorously in writing to disc so I thought it was the processor doing something weird or windows act up. So I turned it off by holding the button for 7 seconds. I waited about a minute and he turned his back. To my surprise, the white screen remained. It was like she wasn't even ad (for bios..).

I have a password on it to make it more difficult for anyone who would steal for. I entered and press enter thinking it was just a failure I would have to live with it, waited a bit, nothing. I don't even have the grub loader... The hard drive was no activity; the light was not on it's usually when starting Ubuntu or Xp...

I looked at a chart on the Canadian site of Toshiba (impossible to find a Canadian registration here so I registered as a user uk..) and it says to type FN + F5, I knew wouldn't work because I couldn't get any output on an external display.

There can be no. I took the battery and plugged directly into the charger. No change, taken on the hard disk; don't change there either. I don't want to leave the battery for the rest of the night, but I don't think it will make a difference... I just put the battery back as its released since a good 40minutes now and no change...

My only guess is that the gfx card would finally. He got the Intel GMA900 or 950 (don't remember).
Does anyone have any other theories? If so, it is better to spend the money to fix it or should I just get all my data off of it and moving?

Thanks in advance for your help, JoeM

Hmm, I think that if the GPU would be dead you couldn t start the laptop computer.
Have you tried to connect an external monitor?

Try to connect the laptop to use rand to external monitor the FN + F5 to switch to the external display. If nothing appears on the external monitor, then the graphics card may be dead.
But if you see the image on the external displays then the laptop screen or a small part as FL inverter malfunctioning.

When I start the laptop I just swith without any kind of photo,
If I use an external monitor, I have a picture.

When I open the device all the contacts appear to be good.

What can be the problem, and what should I fix or change?

    Regards, Heiko (Germany)

I think the best way is that you pass to a local ASP.

On your laptop there is something wrong with the LCD or the cable and maybe the motherboard also. If a technician should check this and he can exchange all necessary parts for you.

Here, you can search an ASP:

  • Satellite M40x - where the memory?

    Hi all

I want to improve my memory of 512 MB to 1.5 GB. I bought 1 G RAM and when I plugged in the screen become white and computer laptop does not work. RAM is fine. I have contact the technical service of the seller, and according to them I need to remove the old 512 MB of RAM and plugged it my 1 GB of RAM for my laptop recognize the new RAM.

To do this, I opened my keboard and under what I can only find WLAN in the middle in the left there is another local network. and the far left, I see my DVD - ROM. On the right PC card and what is - this. I don't know where is the 512 MB RAM slot. It is there somewhere.

Is there any expert who can tell me where to find 512 MB RAM slot?

PS: I even call Toshiba support and they said sorry according to policy, we cannot tell you.
If expert laymen captions please help me to solve this problem.

    Please

I checked the manual of the Satellite M40x (it can be downloaded from the Toshiba site) and if you look at page 8-7 you can find a description of the memory upgrade.

In my opinion the 512 MB that you already is a built-in RAM that can t be upgraded because the bottom of the laptop is on only one memory slot.

However, I think that it is not a problem to use an additional RAM module, but maybe the new RAM is not compatible with your laptop.
What type of memory you have bought exactly? Maybe you should try it with another.

    I hope I could help a bit.

  • Satellite M40X - the noise of the fan

    Hi all.

    I have a Toshiba Satellite M40X - 161 (PSM4XE).

I had this problem with the fan of the computer running all the time and make a lot of noise because I bought a few years ago.
Once I had the fan cleaned in the shop of service it was ok for a few days, and then he started again.

Is there a solution for this problem? I read that Toshiba has released new versions of BIOS that solve this problem, but for laptops with ATI/nVidia video cards.

I have an Intel card. Is there something for my model, and someone has fixed this?

    Hello

Is not a friend of the problem.

The cooling modules must be cleaned periodically. It s not enough clean the fans only once the dust appears more if it s necessary to regularly clean the cooling modules.

You should also take a look in the power of the Windows operating system options.
Most of the time it possible s control of the CPU performance and cooling performance that would reduce noise and fan activity.

  • Satellite M40x-149 - icons on the bigger apeared office

Hi there, hope someone can help me.

I booted up my laptop today and the icons on the desktop appears larger. I have a click with the right button on the desktop then went properties SETTINGS and noticed that the highest resolution I could get is 1024 x 768, but when I checked the specifications of my computer online, I found that should be by as high as 1280 x 800.

My laptop is a satellite M40x-149. The cursor goes down to 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768 there is no inbetween.
I tried restoring the system, but in vain.

    Help please

    Hello

This looks like the display driver needs to be updated. Please see the Toshiba page for an update:
    http://EU.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com-online decision-making supported Downloads & => Download drivers

Before installing the latest version, you must remove the old one. Then restart the laptop and now to install the most recent version.

Normally if the display driver is installed correctly, you should be able to choose the higher screen resolution.

    Hello

Very often but not always, when I start the laptop (Satellite M40X - 186 Windows XP SP3), after a while, the Windows Media Player popup window. I got close but it reappears etc... also very often, there's erratic behavior: the keyboard is unusable or the letter etc. which appears on the screen is not bound to the key... or the cursor moves in an irrational way.
I scanned all the files from virus (Avast tool) I reinstalled XP, updated the ATI driver... but this does not appear to have solved the problem.

No idea what is the cause of this failure?
    Thanks if you can help

When you start your laptop computer and enter the BIOS settings, you can use keyboard and go to settings?

So, how can I restore it so I can use Toshiba power saver?

    THX in advance

    Adham

When you press the button, toshiba power setting should appear without any messages. I put the settings directly from the Toshiba utility so the message you get to open the windows power management reveals that there is a problem.

Try to reinstall toshiba power saver utility from recovery cd or you can download it from download drivers on the official website.

  • How to partition the hard drive in my satellite M40X-189?

Please can you advise the team?
I would like to have the operating system and application programs in a partition and the data I've created in another partition.
Please can I have advice from the team?
Has anyone partitioned the hard drive on their satellite M40X-189 and what software did you use to do the partitioning?
Also, I just defragged my hard drive and the card reader can be seen at: http://www.seniorvalues.org/drive%20map.jpg
I am curious about the above provision given that free space if 52%, but white space does not reflect this and there is a piece of defragmented files and folders around the middle of the big whitespace at the end of the training I was expecting to be adjacent to the last great defragmented file.
    TIA

    Hello

I use partition magic to create and manage new partitions. In my opinion it of the best tool if you want to work with partitions.
I have 2 partitions on my unit. C for OS and D for the 3rd of data and files. In this case if I recover my unit only the first C partition will be formatted.

    Good bye

  • Satellite M40X - BSOD caused by ATI2DVAG. Win XP SP3 DLL

    Hello

    I have a laptop Tosiba Satellite M40X.

When the ATI display driver is installed, there is a blue screen caused by a loop of infitive caused by the ATI2DVAG. DLL with the OEM Version of Windows XP, the machine is working no more.

When a full Windows XP is installed, it is possible to delete all the ATI * hard disk. Then, with a resolution of 1024 * 768, the machine works properly without any problem.

Once the ATI driver is installed again, the problems reappear. It does not help to download the latest driver from the TOSHIBA Web site. I already have new loades drivers on the net through special but even with that it was not possible to solve the problem.

It seems to me that the machine works best with the new driver. It was possible to perform the verification of the material (software provided by Toshiba) with no problem, when the new pilot (pilot program) was installed without any problems.

I could check the Device Manager when the machine was not working properly. There, I saw that there is an interference between the PCI bridge card driver and the ATI driver.

I am woandering why the problems start (when the ATI driver is installed) just after the start of the machine, even before or while you can see TOSIHBA for the first time. There is no difference if you unplug the machine power and the battery before. This is why I believe that there is a problem that persists when the computer is without energy (BIOS).

I have already updated to the latest drivers and the latest version of the BIOS (from Toshilba)

The TOSHIBA support asked me to bring my laptop to test the equipment. But, in my opinion, there is no material damage. The problem is Toshiba and / or ATI.

    Where are the latest drivers?

Why is it possible to get the version 8 driver ATI by RADAR SYNC when Version 6 is available on the TOSHIBA site at the same time?
Toshiba does not provide the latest drivers and wants to bring in the laptop for a verification of the material. This service is very good.
I always wanted to buy a new TOSHIBA but with this kind of service...

Does anyone have a similar problem or solution for this?

    Greetings

    Markus

    I have a question;

The M40X is a older laptop and I assume that this issue didn't appear in the past.
If the laptop has worked with the graphics driver preinstalled, old.
This means that it is NOT a graphics driver issue but it must relate to another reason.

    > I wonder why the problems start (when the ATI driver is installed) just after the start of the machine, even before or while you can see TOSIHBA for the first time.
This would mean that this problem occurs because the graphics driver has been loaded and the map graphic with a maximum return.
And it also means that it is NOT a graphics driver issue but also question of graphics chip.

I agree with the TOSHIBA support. The said, you should contact the technician for the control of the laptop.
I recommend the same because as described above this doesn t sound like a software problem!

  • Satellite M40X-286: energy saving and the E - key utility does not work on Vista

First of all, sorry for my bad English.

I managed to install Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit on my Satellite M40X-286. Everything works, except for the energy saving and the E - key utility. I tried the added value of packages of other TOSHIBA models, but they all give an error message during the installation. Is there a solution for this problem?

Now I can't change the speed of the processor and the brightness of my screen, and I can't even adjust these settings in a power mode. The only way to change the brightness is manually using the FN + F6 and F7 keys.

    Kind regards
    Stijn.

Please don t be crazy about me, but there is no problem at all. The situation is quite clear.

First: tools and utilities are similar, but in most cases have to be adapted for each laptop model. It may happen that some tools work on the different model of laptop, but this does not mean that he has to work on each model.

Second important fact is that Toshiba does not Satellite M40X support for Vista operating system and I guess you won't be able to use this tool. In my opinion, it is not so important, because all the energy-saving settings you can find in Vista power options.

For utility E - key, I don't see a solution. If you use OS not supported, you must live with it.

  • Problem starting on Satellite M40X-250

For some time, I'm having a problem with an old laptop, the Toshiba Satellite M40X-250.

When I try to boot this laptop, the headlights turn on, I can hear the hard drive and fan from, also I can hear (if I have one there) station cd read cd/dvd.

But nothing else happens, the screen remains black and there is no way I can make it work.

I quite know something on the desktop, so I disassembled the laptop completely and just cleaned and after I reassembled it again, but that had no effect, I can not even boot up the laptop.

There is however another strange thing, it is very rare, but sometimes I get to start, but at some random point (very quickly, because I can't actually use the laptop) it is for me a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) with an error code, I think it was 0x000000EA. In any case, this meant a driver problem with the graphics card. It gave me an error ATIDVAG.

But most of the time I'm still not able to start.

Now, it's a very old laptop and I have tried everything,.
I tried to start without battery (disconnected) and only the power, without result.
I tried to start only with the battery, no results.
I tried to unplug the power supply and the battery, then press the power button / stop for 60 seconds, no results.
I tried several rescue cd, a linux installation cd, windows installation cd, it resulted in nothing.
[EDIT] I have also connected to the laptop to an external monitor, but that did not work, no results.

I'm really lost now, I have tried everything I know, and I've never met a problem like this.
Maybe it's just the fact that material became old and it is better to give up, but I would really like to know if there is someone who can help me and maybe give me some ideas on what I can do.

I am very familiar with the inside of this laptop and I know what to do. I don't want to not call me an expert, maybe it is a little off, but I know my way around.
so, if anyone has a solution, let me know.

    Regards and thanks in advance.

Black screen means that the display is faulty or chip chart.

But if the internal screen would malfunction, then you should still be able to use the external monitor, but I guess that's not possible, therefore, I think that his GPU problem
