Satellite M60-164: very large external 320 GB HARD drive data Transmision

I am the proud owner of a Toshiba Satellite M60 164, however, as I am downloading my wife camcorder videos and burn them to DVD, I rapibly to run out of hard drive space. Therefore, Saturday I purchsed a new Toshiba 320 GB USB external hard drive.

After you have copied a number of videos captured on this new disc (about 20 min each for approximately 22Gb), I'm trying now copy back - one at a time - on the hard disc internal PC to burn them on DVD.

Each of the 22 GB files takes up to 200 minutes (more than 3 hours!) to transfer back from the external hard drive to PC Hd - this seems incredibly long (I'm not impressed) - anyone any idea why this might be?

Link is USB2. 1 GB of Ram on PC, 75 GB of disk space on PC internal Hd, 1.83 MHz piece, Norton Security running, if nothing else when attempting to transfer. Manual is useless, all this suggests is maybe 1 GB per dry 18 (at best) - a little difference between 396 seconds and 200 minutes (I have of course the NET would be faster!)

The clues what is the problem?

Pete

Hello

I guess that the Norton Security checks the files during the file transfer.
Try turning off the Antivirus and Norton Security application if you want to copy the files.
Check it out.
The other possibility is that the drive HARD internal (5200 RPM) can't handle faster transmission of files.

You said that you have installed the Win XP SP1a.

    You must Win XP SP2!

If you wish, you can create a CD Win XP SP2 clean! How? It's very easy. You need the tool freeware nLite (google for it and how to use it).

Using the nLite application you could create a new XP CD and could include SP2 in this CD. You can then use this disk to start!

I completely agree with Akuma. Windows 7 supports and include clean driver CD/DVD from Microsoft. If the optical CD/DVD drive should be automatically recognized by Win7.

If there is a yellow exclamation point, remove the ODD of Device Manager, and then restart the device after restarting again the laptop must find new device and should recognize this.

    Hi mucklin terry

I checked the Satellite M60-164 information and it seems that the Bluetooth is not available on this device.
In this case, the only way to use Bluetooth technology is to use the PCMCIA Bluetooth card or the USB Bluetooth key.

Yes, it might be possible to use a bigger HDD as a 320 GB HARD drive.
The laptop supports a SATA controller so it shouldn't t be a problem!

  • Satellite Z930 - suspend the problem with connected USB hard drive

    Hello

    Owner of a newly acquired Satellite Z930-15 X, I have a few questions/problems:

    1) suspends the work of RAM and good hibernation when there is no external hard drive connected. If there is one is connected, the laptop immediately returns back to suspend state. Is there a solution for this?

    (2) is there a way to selectively disable Bluetooth? Currently, only toggle airplane mode is available (with Fn + F8 or Windows 8 charm bar). This activates / deactivates the Wi - Fi or Bluetooth I think.

    (3) the portable computer is wobbly on reception. I put a bit of thin paper at the corner of a bottom (bottom left) so that it can be stabilized. Apparently, the problem is also mentioned in another thread. Is there a suggestion to fhix this problem?

    Thank you.

1 / what HARD drive is connected to your laptop? When I use the external 2.5 HARD drive with my Satellite U940 I n t have problem.

2 / I ve tested it on my machine and I noticed the same thing. When WIFI is disabled software BT is off too. I didn t find a way how to separately control adapter WLAN and BT.

3 / I think that this issue needs to be clarified with Toshiba service. They must check and perhaps exchange rubbers inside.

  • Satellite Pro A100-001 - maximum capacity of a hard drive supported?

I tried looking for the Board of Directors and the Toshiba site, but have not yet found the answer. Please bear with me if the question has been answered elsewhere.

I bought an old A100 on eBay - it seems to work fine, but it has a 40 GB hard drive (not standard).

Enter the serial number on the Toshiba support site reveals the machine to be an A100-001.

I can implement it using a SATA drive.

Anyone know if I could go to a 320 GB drive, or if there is a limit to the capacity of hard disk supported in this model?

    Hello

If that s SATA HARD drive controller then you should be able to use the 320 GB HARD drive and more
As much as I know the SATA controller has no limitations, and therefore, it should be possible to use these larger sizes of hard drives.

    Hope I could help you.

  • How to change the Satellite L670D-103 using new SSD 80 GB HARD drive?

    Hello

I have a Satellite L670D-103 with a 320 GB HARD drive running at 5400 RPM which is too slow for me.

So I plan to change this factory by a new SSD HDD to increase the performance of the overall system :)

But as the SSD are expensive, I have only a 80 GB SSD.

I built the recovery on a USB media and I want to use it to restore my system to the new SSD (I previously did the space needed to ensure that all data can be stored on my new SSD 80 GB space; p)

Retrieving SSD partitioning new procedure is done without error, but when copying image to restore data to freshly created the partition, one not enough space error stop the process!

It seems that the recovery procedure is possible on a hard drive that is equal or superior to the original size of the disk (320 gb).

So, how can I restore mysystem on my new SSD?

    Thank you
    Stéphane.

    > It seems that the recovery procedure is possible on a hard drive that is equal or superior to the original size of the disk (320 gb)

To my knowledge, you have different recovery options:

(* 1) * recovery of factory default software

    (a) recovery to out of box state
    (b) recovery without changing the HARD drive partitions
    (c) recovery of a custom size partition

    (* 2) * "erase the HARD drive.

I think that if you choose factory default software recovery of-> recovery to out of box state then the recovery would create exactly the same size of partition on the new SSD which were available on the 320 GB HARD drive.
I think this might be the reason why you have received this message.

Perhaps you need to choose the 3rd option Recovery on a custom size partition

    What do you think?

  • Satellite A210 - 1 4 - possible signs of a hard drive failure

    Hello

I use a Toshiba Satellite A210 - 1 4 and think that the hard drive may be showing signs of failure.

    _The symptoms are: _

    * While the Windows 7 boot frequently stops at 'Starting Windows' screen (before the Windows logo appeared) and all HARD drive activity stops meaning a hard reset is necessary to bring him back.

    * When I unplug the power cord on Windows 7, the computer freezes usually with nothing happens and stop any HARD drive activity, once again a hard reset is required to bring back to life.

What are these early signs of HARD drive failure or is there something else wrong?

    Hey Buddy,

For me it doesn t look like the HARD drive malfunction if Windows 7 stops when starting or freezes when you unplug the AC adapter

Have you already tried to reinstall the operating system? It could be the software problem.

If you still want to check your drive HARD uses a disk HARD Drive Fitness Test as a diagnostic tool. It s freeware so you can find it if you search on Google.

  • I installed an external USB connected hard drive Seagate, it slowed the computer and check the new disc repeatedly

    Hello

I installed an external USB connected hard drive Seagate to copy some movies and pictures of my HP laptop with Vista, but it became a big problem. It slowed the computer and check the new disc repeatedly. Then it wouldn't start without the external drive at all but it was working fine once he was conducting with the external hard drive. So thinking I can outsmart the computer, I uninstalled the drive from Control Panel. Now it primer not at all. The computer lights up briefly and then goes out of itself almost immediately, is there a solution to this? Thank you

    Original title: startup problem

    Hi SomBhattacharya,

Please try the possible fix following first thanks to Carey Frisch:

    1. open the BIOS of the motherboard.
    2. find where it says Priority Boot Device, then select CD/DVD-ROM 1, 2nd Hard Drive and disable all the rest.
3 find somewhere in the BIOS where it says BOOT USB, Wake on USB, etc. and disable all unnecessary options.

And second if it does not help, you can try the following with Blue Michael:

Local Geek Squad had me intentionally set the BIOS to the correct order, then re-order and SAVE.
It worked, even if the list of the BIOS was always in the right order.

    I hope this helps!

  • Need opinions on very large external monitors and Satellite A100-02 b

    Hi, people

I have a real fine Tosh Satellite A100-02 b (PSAAR) and use it now with an old 15 "CRT as desktop"
extension at a resolution of 1024 * 768 under Vista.

Now, I started to develop a language c#-software with Visual Studio Express and just need to 'space' on
My monitors for all Visual Studio itself, the VS-Help, not anchored windows for the software
I want 'interoperability', their documentation, object models etc. etc.

    Then I would ask:

-My manual says that an external monitor max resolution is 2048 * 1536
Is it also possible as extension of office or is there a lower limit in this case?

Is there a limit on which Vista Aero off
(I don't want to, because I love it)

-My Tosh doesn't have a DVI output, is a real large external monitor limited by that
or are there constraints of display quality?

OK, a few very special questions, but before making such a costly investment :), I want to
get some opinions here in this beautiful forum...

    Thanks in advance,
    Matz

    Hello

According to the specification of the notebook you should not have problems with screen resolution of 2048 x 1536.

I can't give you info on Vista Aero because I have no such external screen, but your priority is to use the external display correctly and do not have Vista Aero. Am I wrong? It is far more important to choose between these two options first.

You are right your laptop has no DVI output port, but you can use the RGB port with RGB-to-DVI converter. Talk to your local dealer. It can help you.

At the end: If you buy external display you can test a few days. If you are not satisfied you can bring it back. Generally you have 14 days to try the product. Find out on this subject.

  • Wireless disconnect on Satellite M60-164

We have a M60 - 164 connected to a Netgear DG834GT wireless router. The laptop connects without a problem at startup, but will eventually lose its connection, requiring a reboot to get back online. This occurs if the connection is busy or idle.

Latest firmware is on the router, the latest drivers on the laptop and I disabled the power management to run the card wireless at full power all the time, but the problems persist.

    Someone at - it ideas?

    Update:
I thought that this problem was related to the WPA - PSK, but it turns out not to be the case - even with the unsecured network I can't keep the machine connected to the router for any decent length.

    Hello Richard

If you check the wireless card, you will find a large number of similar subjects with the same claims. Of course, there is a problem with the WiFi of INTEL 2200BG card. You can try to install the latest driver for this INTEL card and check the connection of the new.
