Satellite M70 164 - definition of optical drive as first boot device

Hello

I am trying to put the optical drive Mat * a DVD - RAM UJ - 841 S as boot drive, but have so far failed.
I have updated bios (1.7) set in the BIOS, the CD/DVD as 1st boot device (even if an exclamation point appears in front of this option, Philippe dunno what it means), have defined in cd/dvd Toshiba HWsetup-> FDD-> LAN-> HARD drive.

Am I missing something?

Best regards
Jorge Antunes

All that you have done is just but I do not understand what is happening with optical disc device?
Can you use it as first boot device or not?
Have you tested with different media bootable?

Can you please provide more information and explain to us what exactly is happening?

I wonder if someone can tell me what are the default temperatures of the hard drieve of a satellite M70-164

    Hello

It is not easy to say. It is based on the use of the HARD drive.
If the turns HARD disk and OS write or read on/from the HARD drive, so the temperature increases, but if you use the laptop only for internet, so the temperature of the HARD drive remains on the low level.

  • Satellite M70 164 - screen freezes and goes black, overheating

    Hello world! :)

Recently my Satellite m70-164 started to freeze after only a few minutes of work. The picture on the screen freezes, and a few seconds later, it becomes completely black.
The computer doesn't even have time to warm up, and it's not stop... It's just the screen that freezes and becomes so black. I have to reset the computer by pressing the power button. (I write from another computer).

I noticed that working time reduced whenever I have reset the computer and after some time it freezes even though I am in the BIOS settings, so I don't think it's an OS problem.
Even if the computer does not have time to warm up, this suggests it might be a heat problem.
So I tried pointing a fan this is low (a big, like the ones we use in the summer), and it works without problem!

With the fan facing these, I reinstalled Windows - so no Virus.
Laptop fan * not * continue to operate as it is overheating.
The fan runs and it is not clogged as I've cleaned.

So if anyone has the same problem, or ideas, please respond!
    (And sorry for my English)
    Thanks in advance! : D

    Hey Buddy,

I agree with you. In this case, even in the BIOS, that it has nothing to do with Windows or a Virus. In this case, it seems to be a hardware malfunction

But before contacting an authorized service provider to diagnose what part is the cause, clean your laptop using a jet of compressed air. This should be done from time to time (every 4 months) and, therefore, it of not necessary to disassemble the laptop.

All HDD 2.5 "can be put in Satellite M70 or they must have specific dimensions? For example, I thin on Samsung spinpoint [model: http://www.pricerunner.com/pl/36-765680/Hard-Drives/Samsung-SpinPoint-T166-320GB-SATAII-7200rpm-Compare-Prices].

    Hello!

As far as I know the Satellite M70 was available with hard drives SATA and IDE hard drives. If you have a SATA HDD, you can use this HARD drive.

The Satellite M70 takes to load only SATA150 (SATA1) but this isn't a problem. All SATA2 HDDs runs SATA1 mode and are 100% compatible.

can someone help me find a readers who works on Windows 7?

    PLEASE

    Hello

I completely agree with Akuma. Windows 7 supports and include clean driver CD/DVD from Microsoft. If the optical CD/DVD drive should be automatically recognized by Win7.

You see the ODD in Device Manager?
If there is a yellow exclamation point, remove the ODD of Device Manager, and then restart the device after restarting again the laptop must find new device and should recognize this.

  • Satellite M70-164 don't seam to work at all

I have an old M70-164 which was daily used (windows XP SP3 Home) as my work machine (not to mention the usual stuff of MSoffice and webbrowsing, I use molecular modeling software, Python interpreter and some software of image rendering, as well as be used to access a network of Linux machines).

It has been used this way for the past four years or so! Battery of died you long ago, and I never use it.
PS died too, and I use a newer version (with the same exact specifications).
A week ago, the computer wouldn't start. I noticed that the hot water heat exchanger (he found to be turned off when the Windows logo has showed - about 5 to 10 seconds after pressing the power button) and who offered to throw a poor circulation of air heat exchanger.

I backed up my data HD connect HARD drive in an external enclosure Sata USB HD and backup on my desk at home.

I took the machine apart and clean all the components (there was actually a lot of debris restricting air flow). It was in pieces, I also replaced again had heat on CPU (without removing it from the socket) and on the GPU). Put everything together and it worked fine! Can it run much cooler it is used for :-).

I decided to reinstall the OS using the cd Toshiba provided (including Windows XP and all hardware drivers), as I already had all of the saved data. No problems!

By updating the operating system (to SP3) after being prompt to restart, it did not.
I used the system restore cd, once again, and installed Windwos XP normally.
I stopped the machine and planed to do the updates the next day!

    And it's my problem now!
The machine is not sewing to work at all! The LCD screen is the lightup (completely black as if its judgment).

I have to check it connected to an external monitor, but even if the LCD screen is faulty, I expect some HARD drive that is not present activities!

Did someone faced a similar problem? any suggestions?
I'm going to hook it up to an external monitor tonight and will display the result!

    Hello

    I m not very well what happened, but you should first try this;
Remove the battery and unplug the AC adapter.
Then wait some time (1-2 hours)

After that, connect the battery and plug in the AC adapter.
After this attempt to turn the unit

If this will not help, remove the RAM module and try to power the device using an alone module RAM

Hope this helps if not the laptop developed a serious hardware problem

    Excuse my lack of knowledge.

    I received a Satellite M70-173.

to turn on before charging readings - fatal error; I have to save all my data and replace the hard drive.

I don't know if it's fixable and that's what I have to do. I also said that when you replace a HARD disk I need a recovery disk.

I reside in Cyprus and don't have is not easy access to the shops of style PC big supermarket.

I was wondering if I could use a generic HDD and if so is there a particular one that I need to acquire?

    Also

where would I go to get a recovery disk?

I got the laptop I can't afford to buy a new one at the moment and it is still in very good condition apart from the above-mentioned problems!

I wish that all the advice on what type of HARD drive, I would need or is available - rough cost so I don't get ripped off and if we change the disk HARD is as easy as I read. Also where I should go to get a recovery disc and if that's all I need to fix the laptop.

Thank you very much in advance for any help I can get.

    Peter

    > The laptop does turn on - is it possible to make a recovery of a damaged laptop disk

How do you do if you can't turn on the laptop?

What you could do is to remove the HARD drive, then place it into the drive enclosure HARD 2.5 external, then connect the HARD drive to another computer, to save the data.

In my opinion this is what you could do

  • Satellite M70-164 PSM71: after the installation of Vista the display flashes

    Hello

I have a M70 - 164 witch has an ATI mobility Radeon x 700 with 128 MB dedicated. I installed Windows Vista Business on it, but sometimes, when the LCD resolution changes (IE, when I start a game, when I close the LCD screen and open when I connect,...) the screen becomes stupid...

You know, with lots of color, but I don't understand anything in it! As you was whatching a coded TV channel, flicking and with no image defined.

Anyone know what it can be? It started to happen when I installed windows Vista. I already did twice, but the problem is still present. I've used Vista drivers, the drivers from the ATI site, toshiba.ca drivers, drivers of other toshiba computers...

I don't know what to do more. If you can help, I would like to say thank you.

    Hello

For me, it looks like a graphics driver issue.
Your M70 seems to be a European model and this is why you must use the graphics drivers that are specifically designed for this model of laptop but unfortunately I checked on the European pilot site and found nothing :(
I noticed that Toshiba releases every week new drivers for various notebook series.
Maybe you unit series will appear both in the text

But nevertheless, this problem is very strange, a friend of mine installed Vista on the M70 and something like this didn't happen.
Maybe it of not a driver problem; (but related material?  :|

    Hmmm updated you the BIOS?

  • Satellite M70-192 - question of HARD drive replacement

    Hello...

It's just my first time to ask for help in this forum... and besides, in any forum on the whole wide net.
So, sorry if am don't do this right... that's...

My brother bought a laptop (Toshiba Satellite M70 - 192 psm71e-01k00rar) of the Kuwait around 2006. A few months ago we started hearing "noise noise deaf deaf" - ing sound inside the camera and the screen is just deleted (there was an error message that is encrypted but I wasn't able to note it). I was able to boot from the DVD or USB drive. So I thought that maybe the hard drive has been the only problem.

I put in a new HARD drive (a 320 GB western digital scorpio wd3200bevt) and started to reinstall the system (I forgot which of the 2 supplied Toshiba cd I inserted first - media cd or the windows xp CD-ROM) but in the middle of installing the keyboard area was so hot that I unplugged / stop the laptop immediately.

After that, the HARD drive has become invisible to any Linux or rescue CD or utility of HARD drive that I tried to boot from... (fortunately?) The said HDD vendor as the HARD wd scorpio drive + really + defective and they replaced...

    * now the questions: * I discovered that the rated current for the HARD drive (60 GB) provided originally for the Toshiba M70 is a little bigger than the new wd scorpio *(.55 amp) *. Could this be the reason why the 1st WD Scorpion got "fried"?
    Is it a SATA1 - SATA2 question?
How can I _properly_ replace/upgrade our laptop HARD drive?

Please note that before I bought the new HARD drive, I ve read somewhere in the "net I could use a disk sata2 on a sata1 controller, etc. + * pls help!" * +

Toshiba services are simply too expensive for me right now if will send it (cell phone) in a licensed shop. Why I'm in DIY mode that s. I don't think I can afford an another fried Scorpion!

    Thank you!
    yours,
    TAC

    > I discovered that the rated current for the HARD drive (60 GB) provided originally for the Toshiba M70 is a little bigger than the new wd Scorpion (.55 MPA). Could this be the reason why the 1st WD Scorpion got "fried"?

I don t think that a larger and faster HARD drive might be the reason for the higher internal temperature.
You said that you have heard and his strange "noise noise deaf deaf." Such sound could be created by the defective cooling module. A defective module could be responsible for the highest internal temperature

    > Is it a SATA1 - SATA2 question?
    Here's your second thread:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums//message.jspa?MessageID=150272
You can see that the SATA2 is compatible to the bottom and the s SATA2 HARD drive would work with common controller SATA HDD.

    > How can I properly replace/upgrade our laptop HARD drive?
Replacing the HARD drive is not difficult. I see that you have already found the HARD drive Bay and bought a HARD drive.
In your case I recommend using the common SATA 2.5 HARD drive with 100 GB maybe 120 GB.

    Welcome them

  • Satellite M50D-A-10W - error "reboot and select proper boot device."

I have a Toshiba Satellite M50D-A-10W passing me all nuts "reboot and select proper boot device."

This has happened before and it was solved by ctr-alt-del and F12 to get into the BIOS where the date went back to some time in 2010 - after put so far and to change the boot device, everything worked fine... until the next day.

Now I get the screen "reboot and select good boot device ', but the F12 key does not; I also tried F2... the message keep multiplying, no BIOS...
    Help, please!

In some cases the BIOS is only accessible by pressing the button turn off force on the lower side of the unit.

After that you were able to start the windows system, its highly recommended to update the BIOS as BIOS update would solve this annoying problem.

  • Satellite C50-B-13N - error "Reboot and select good boot device."

    Hi all

My laptop recently bought C50-B-13N moving 39 updates yesterday, when it crashed.

Get back with me stuck in a loop continuous. After what seemed like the logical approach to reset to factory settings, I have
seem to have accidentally deleted the data on the disk.

I have now repeatedly received the error message "Reboot and select proper boot device."

I tried the F12 approach to , but my Start Menu does not have this option.

I'm frustrated that the new laptop played if bad, given that I have had Toshiba devices for about 10 years.
In addition, I am disappointed that potentially serious consequences to remove the drive were clearly deprecated for me, before you start.

    Please give us a solution.
The laptop is 4 months old.

In addition, how can I start the process of an application under my warranty?
A dissatisfied customer of experience to date.

    Kind regards

    CGI

I seem to have accidentally deleted the data on the disk.

Obviously the HARD drive recovery procedure is not possible now because the HARD drive recovery files have been deleted.

I guess you have not created such recovery media as recommended in the user's manual.

Well, in this case, you have a chance to order a missing middle of recovery and recover the laptop to factory condition.

Means of recovery can be ordered here:

    Hello

Please check if the HARD drive is recognized by the BIOS.
It might be possible that your HARD drive is dead for no apparent reason.
Therefore access the BIOS by pressing the F2 key while turning on the unit.
Inside the BIOS, you should see if the HARD drive whether or not written.
Also you could ensure that startup is enabled and if the UEFI BIOS is chosen.

If nothing helps, visit your dealer and ask for replacement.
If you want to resolve this issue, contact Toshiba service in your country.

  • External DVD drive as first boot option problem!

Yesterday, I got my Lenovo s10e and as it doesn't have a DVD rom, I bought a DVD burner external Liteon.

It was installed automatically when I connected via USB. OK, it works very well with windows installed on my netbook.

    However, I can't solve a problem!

When I chose USB DVD/CD as first boot option in the boot menu (Setup), it does not work! Boot sequence, I changed several times, but all in vain!

The strange question is when I insert a cool drive with a bootable software, it works very well except for my DVD burner!

I contacted Lenovo after the sale, they said because my DVD Recorder connects to the netbook through USB, it is not detectable.

    So, what should I do?

If I remember correctly your unit select a bay and you can remove the easy DVD player. In the lower corner, you will find SlimSelectBay latch. Move to position undocking and carefully remove the disc.

The disc is set to SlimSelectBay. I have gift? t remember exactly how many screws are there but the disassembly procedure is not complicated. Check it!
