Save copies of photo managed in LR or just with OS?

My usual process is to import pictures on an external drive with a second copy created at the same time on another external hard drive.

However, sometimes the backup drive is not available during the import was made so there is only the master copy which is the version referenced in the catalogue. In order to keep the full backup, can I just copy the missing images of the drive backup via the computer OS or must it be done since LR so that he knows where are copies?

Lightroom doesn't keep track of copies. An image cannot be imported once, and Lightroom keeps track of this image by its location. Lightroom does not second or backup. So, you can copy the images on the backup drive with your operating system.

  • There is a photo management tool/plugin?

I still own LR. This is the feature of development is really superb. Much better than any tool PP, I have used in the past.

A gap that I find with LR, however, is its photo management tool.  I used ACDSee Picture Manager, among other things, in the past, the management of photo in ACDSee was really good and intuitive. The following functions have been really practical in ACDSee that I find missing in LR.

    • Group (in addition to sorting) by almost any criteria - original date, day, month, camera, focal, etc..
    • Display a number any of attirbutes - camera, resolution, size, etc.
    • batch renaming practice
    • Travel and single copy

As you can see, these are all file management functions. LR has these functions as well?

If this isn't the case, maybe I'll have to use both tools after all - LR for development and ACDSee Photo Manager for managing files.

Certainly, Lightroom is a photo management tool that compares well with ACDSee. There are probably advantages and disadvantages to each, but everything on your list is present in LR except display resolution (if by that you mean pixels per inch of the photo).

    1. Grouping, as this can be done through the bar filter or smart collections
    2. The metadata panel displays the attributes
    3. F2 rename batch
    4. Move photos is done via the Control Panel folder. LR does not copies, as the paradigm Lightroom does not make real copies. It includes no virtual copies. Of course, you can create copies via another tool, the file-> export. You can make copies in your operating system.

But if you want LR to have the same flow of work/features/ease of use/etc, like ACDSee (or Bridge, Photoshop Elements or any other program), let's be honest, it's not. The programs work differently. You will need to learn the methods and mechanics of each program. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and LR has a lot of 'pros' for its photo management tools.

  • Pix & Editor Photo Manager of LR etc.?

I spent all my time to test recent editors of different photos - Raw processing, Lightroom, darktable, Capture One, Lightzone, Photoshop Elements, affinity, ACDC Mac Pro, DXO Optics 11 - on and on. Most of them is best editors (IMO) than pictures, but I prefer the ease of use and search for photo management. And since we now have two "extensions" and in particular the extension "External editors", I wonder why I should not simply use pictures for management and my 'catalogue' and some minor/quickie changes and exit to all others, I prefer to do more complex work.

I mean, what's wrong with this picture? Photos is pretty quick and easy, good import, has a few basic changes, and fantasy guys are always more or less available, either by extensions (or some of them) and by export and re - import (even if it work you on duplicates, I suppose).

Anyway, would love to hear from someone who has tried this or he tries now, how it worked, and what are the limits, what to watch out for, etc.

    Thank you very much.

And since we now have two "extensions" and in particular the extension "External editors", I wonder why I should not simply use pictures for management and my 'catalogue' and some minor/quickie changes and exit to all others, I prefer to do more complex work.

That's what I've done since publishing extensions became available.

My main reason to stick with Photos is iCloud photo library.  There is no other easy way to sync my library of Photos between multiple Macs.

I found that I must not fall back on the Photo editing spotted too often. I'm careful to take my pictures so they don't need much editingbeyond straighten the horizon lsightly, cropping, perhaps to correct the white balance and adjust the highlights and shadows. Everything that can be done in pictures.

I mainly use extensions or external for a correction of perspective editors, if it was not possible to take the picture with the correct perspective, for the smoothing of the skin and for touch-ups. I try to avoid extensions if mounting can be done in Photos, for two reasons:

    • Extensions create a new master file almost, like Aperture. Then they break up which edition.
    • And they are not yet as stable as I could wish. For example, extensions of affinity cannot edit some panoramic shots, they can reframe the edited section. And I often get an error message when I try to save the modified version - for affinity extensions and extensions site, for the most part, if I try to apply multiple extensions to the same photo.
  • Modified photo management strategy

I've never used a non-destructive editor before. So I wonder what a good strategy would be to managign all the original and edited versions. It seems to me that could get out of control very fast.

I use version 5, and most importantly, I intend to clean up my photos and post them on Flickr or something like that. Usually full resolution.

    Thank you

There are a few different approaches you can take by separating the photos changed from those non-edited.

The first thing to note is that all the changes are non-destructive, so it is not necessary to organize separately the copites unmodified image.

If you want to compare published from non-edited versions you can view photos before and after in the develop module:

You can also save changes as an Instant to go back and view later:

Photos with an applied adjustment will have the following iconso that you can immediately know if they are edited or intact:

These are all excellent means of distingishing changes to your images. However, if you want nevertheless to separate them, you can create separate collections for your modified photos:

To do this, I would like to start by creating a Collection set for all images in this download.

From there, you can create the collections which will be organised under this Collection Set

From there, you can make collections as much as you want.

    For example:

    All images - unedited

    Best images - unedited

Best of the best - novel

Cream of the crop - edited

or, however, you want to organize!

Don't forget that all these collections and groups you are not performing how your images are organized on the back-end. It is up to you to choose the right place for your images, and if you move them or remove them they will be not available in Lightroom as Lightroom does not save copies of your images and only metadata for your supported, and the settings.

    I hope this helps!

  • Xperia Z5: How to return to the original photo after you save the cropped photo?

Hi, I wonder how I can return to the original photo after saving a photo cropped on my Xperia Z5. The cropped photo doesn't have a sufficient resolution so he could be put on a canvas, I want to return to the original photo before cropping. Thank you :-)

    Hello, troy_t!

If you crop the photo, the original photo will always be there. You can crop photos on the Album and then use Photo Editor. It is a standard editing program that is provided with your Sony Xperia Z5. If you crop a photo and then save the cropped photo, the original photo will always be there. I can assure you that if you use the standard Photo editing program to crop a photo, the original photo will always be there, even if it was cropped. You can make as many photos cropped the image you want to crop as you want, because the original photo will always be there, even if you may have saved a version cropped the image you wanted at the origin of the crops.

  • Several copies of photos and videos in librar

There are often multiple copies of photos and videos in my pictures and video libraries (I mean a LOT of copies... usually with a number in brackets).  I'm afraid that they use hard disk space.  Is there a way I can stop Windows 7 to automatically perform these copies?  I do not see why I would need never them.

If you keep the files stored on an sd card and keep importing the files of same whenever it might be a good idea to import into the same folder each time, at least you will have a folder that contains all the content of imports and only new files will be imported.

But this implies that you use windows Explorer to copy and paste or drag and drop the files in this folder, every time,

When windows Explorer detects duplicates it will warn you that the actions to take when it detects a duplicate file, unfortunately, once duplicates are present (2) or (3) on the end of them that they are different files now.

Copies (copying) aura about it, not one (2)... it's one of the options windows will give you and it seems that you have selected it when you import.

The option that windows needs to take is to not copy the file and change its name if it finds a duplicate you want to jump, check the box to use this action on any other duplicates it finds.

Windows has a bad habit of not reading inside closed files, that is why you have so many duplicates.

There are to many third duplicate file finder software utility out there to help remove them, use your favorite search engine to search for one.

The best thing to do is to select those pictures and right click and delete.

To select several files at once, hold down the CTRL key when you click on the left, select a bunch and delete them all with a right click and delete.

Creative Memories Photo Manager probably ejected your camera after you import the images. Check the default settings and change them if you prefer something different.

If your camera is not displayed as ejection, it is safe to remove it. Damage to the file system wouldn't be possible, but not certain, if he had written active file or buffer not released when the device has been deleted.

After TWO YEARS, someone should be able to give us a step by step, to "reconnect" an external, USB hard drive!  I unplugged and then plugged it, several times, without success.  I seem to have this problem with one of my disks USB, a Toshiba.  Access the drive through files Explorerer, seems to work, even if it is "disconnected". Historical files only has problems. Strange! Could it be the drive itself, or it is plugged in to the USB port?

I had the same issue this morning and found a solution that worked for me.

This post helped: Windows - historic community of 8 files windows does not recognize my drive hard iomega

    NOTE:

-make a backup copy of the files you delete first! (just in case)

-J' had deleted my old historical records from the files on the ext. HDD, so I lost no data. I can't guarantee that the ancient history of the file will be there if you remove the configuration files, as described below. In my opinion, it shouldn't happen, but since I have not tried, I can't guarantee that.

After checking my disk for drive errors (none) and update the drivers (not not mandatory), I went to this location of records:

    C:\Users\your user folder\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration

and remove the four files that were on it. Because they determine the configuration of the file history, when I ran the service once again, I could set up my drive as if it had never been used before. I started historic files, and it lets me choose my hard drive and run the backup as it should.
