Search option is missing from Start Menu

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a laptop Gateway.  I noticed that the search option has disappeared from the start menu.  I would like to know what caused this and how to restore it.

Hey, Cleve:

Please check these steps from a forum of Vista:

Search link (present in the right side of the start menu) is removed
When you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1. In addition, the context menu search
item is deleted.

There are other ways to start a search. For more information, read this
article.

    Hi PIER 29,.

HP Solution Center seems to just use the default e-mail program in Windows. If the default e-mail client has not been properly defined, this problem may occur.

    Click Start, select default programs
Click settings by default access and computer program Set
Click Custom, and then select Windows Live Mail
    Click OK

    Then, follow these steps:

    Click set your default programs
Select Windows Live Mail from the list
Click set this program as default
    Click OK.

I hope this helps... We will know.

It will help with these situations... and, this lesson, I've added a few new commands to my answer of registry file generic copy/paste for these kinds of things:

If you see things like this:

You do not have sufficient security privileges to restore your system.
The System Restore tab is missing from the my computer properties.
System Restore has been disabled by group policy.  To turn on system restore, contact your domain administrator.
The System Restore tab is available, but the turn off System Restore (disabled by Group Policy) box is grayed out.
The task manager has been disabled by your system administrator.
The registry editor has been disabled by your system administrator.
The task manager has been disabled by group policy.
The registry editor has been disabled by group policy.
The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator.  Press a key to continue...

The usual advice are something in the sense of "something has been disabled in the group policy...". ", and it is probably true that something has been disabled, but you know what something is and what it takes to do about it.

If you are using XP Home Edition, you will get away with advice to use the Group Policy Editor, because there is no Group Policy Editor in XP Home and that really doesn't tell you where to look in group policy, even if you run the Group Policy Editor.

You need a complete solution that works for all versions of XP and requires no hunting around in the Group Policy Editor or registry to find where things are that have been disabled.

Unless you have disabled these things on purpose, chances are good that your system has a malware infection.  The malware knows what tools you use to try to find and remove, for the malware disables the things you are more likely to consume and prevents them from running if you can't find the malware and remove it.

If your system has this kind of affliction, all malicious software tools you currently use or have used failed to protect your system so that you can expand your horizons malware detection and prevention to prevent these kinds of afflictions in the first place.

The malware will be happy you trick into thinking that you need to so something drastic to fix your system - as a facility repair, system restore point or a total reinstallation of XP.  This is what it would be like you, but these measures are not necessary.

You must solve the immediate problem of the tools does not, then scan your system for malware when you are finished.

No matter what kind of malware you've used analytical tools, they are unlikely to solve this problem, because they cannot tell if the changes made to your system have been on purpose (you or an administrator who makes them) or some malware changed them, so the analysis tools will let these things alone (it's usually a good thing).

If your system is afflicted in this way, there are probably other things that also do not work - like the registry editor, System Restore and the command prompt, so fix them all at once even if you have not discovered they are broken again.

These commands from registry removes the registry entries that are stop opening programs.  Although the registry entries do not exist, these commands are safe to run and will work for all versions of XP.

Before making any changes to your registry, back up the registry with this free and popular tool:

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/ERUNT.html

Open Notepad to create a new text file:

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    notebook

Click OK to open a new Notepad file.

Copy and paste the following lines of text into the new Notepad file.

Save the new text file with extension .reg on your desktop or somewhere you can remember with a name you can remember, something like:

    enableit.reg

After you save the file, close Notepad.

Locate the file enableit.reg on your desktop and double-click it.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the enableit.reg file, choose open with... and select the registry editor.

Answer in the affirmative to the question... Are you sure you want to add the information in the registry?

You should then see a message that information has been registered in the register.

    Reboot your system and test.

You can delete the enableit.reg file when you are finished.

If the registry editor has also been disabled, we first fix (not a problem).

  • Programs missing from the Menu start Windows 7 Enterprise

We do some tests before a possible deployment was of Win 7 and have encountered a problem of Menu start which left us speechless. On the machine in question, a number of programs and files 'disappeared' in the menu 'programs'. When you look at the two folders that should be merged to display this menu, programs and missing files are present, but those that are listed in the user profile do not appear in the start--> list all programs from the Start button Menu. The records are "Start\program C:\Users\%user_profile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start" and "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start start\program". Any idea where we should consider? Y at - it all Ploicy of ad group that can have an impact on this? We run W2K8 - R2 on our servers so that the announcement should be OK with Win 7. Help! Ralph Miller

This may mean that you have over 70 entries in the two Start Menu > programs files. Try to click the Windows Orb (start), click all programs, and then click Open. Again right click all programs, and then click Open all users. Right-click the taskbar, and then click windows next door. Take a look in the two program records and if it has more than 70 entries, some of them combine or create subfolders. Right click on the task bar to cancel the side by side.

Finally, using the Task Manager, terminate and restart Explorer or reboot the computer to refresh the list.

  • System claims the item from start menu pinned available or moved without reason

Articles pinned in my menu start often get the message "the selected item is not available. It may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. You want to remove from the list? "Always the good in issue always proves to be in the same place with no change at all since he was pinned to the start menu. Everything is updated at least monthly, however almost always no changes have been made to the system at all between the time where the link worked and the time he fell. I'm using Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
I googled this problem he Binged, Yahoo had her, used every there search engine, I found and searched these forums and help with any combination of words I could think and not luck. Please help me someone! It's quite embarrassing.

Sorry took so long to get back to you. I realized what I was doing wrong. I was dragging shortcuts from the desktop to the start menu. When I did it I deleted the shortcuts on the desktop that has broken links in the start menu. Now that I'm using live links the .exe I can't. Thank you for your prompt attention to my question.

  • 'Windows 7' color scheme is missing from the menu "change color scheme".

I restarted my netbook once after trying in vain to change my background, and suddenly the taskbar, the start menu and all the windows that I raise look old, like Windows 98-style. I searched "themes" and got "Change color scheme" on a result. All that was there were four options of "High contrast" and "classic Windows". I googled the problem and a solution I found was to do EXACTLY what I did... except on the menu they showed, there was a color scheme option "Windows 7 Basic" in the same menu. I guess it has been deleted in the menu scheme of color somehow; is it possible to restore it?

    Hey, Jordan.

I know that this could be solved more easily if you had access to the personalization Gallery to choose the basic theme.  Unfortunately, it is not included in Windows 7 Starter.  My best for you right now would be the system restore, restore your system configuration "in time" to before the beginning of the question.

Please note that the system restore only restores the backup copies of the key system files and run a system restore will lose not or "roll back" any of your files, emails, documents, photos, or anything else.  In addition, if you run the restore and you don't like the results for some reason, you can cancel it immediately.  All the restoration takes about 3 minutes.

To start, type in the word "Restore" in your search box on your Start menu.

If it solves your problem, click on the link "Propose as answer" below and vote as useful by clicking on the green triangle for the lelft. Thank you!

  • T450 no boot from USB again, updates from start menu

    Hello

I just got a new T450 and manually installed Windows OS my company 8.1. I tried to find a way to activate the hardware encryption on my drive through Windows and I need to redo the installation (among other reasons).

I used a USB FAT and NTSFs key with a picture Windows 8.1, which works on the other PC. When I go to the boot menu (F12) and choose one of these USB drives, nothing happens, and just start menu resets. USB drives are listed and recognized but nothing DON'T get PAST.

I tried legacy and UEFI boot (I want UEFI) but the same problem persists. I tried to play with pretty much every BIOS setting I could, but it did not help! I managed to install this initially, why the system does not boot the boot from bootable USB?

Edit: It seems that if I have active UEFI only I can't start. Help!

    Beyond belief, frustrated

You can try the system restore to when it worked as desired: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

  • How can I hide some folders from start menu to certain groups of users on Windows 7?

Our company has a record in our record system which Start Menu contains all the administrative and user management tools. Recently, we noticed that our other members of the staff (Standard users) can access this folder. It concerns us because the 'Administrators' folder contains Applications such as the command prompt and a shortcut to the center of disk management. Is there a way we can hide this folder in the Start Menu? Our employees are organized in groups that correspond to their service, in order to hide the folder from several groups of users would be helpful.

Do not put in the folder all USERS with access to... (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start menu) and put only in the user profiles you want (C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu)

Without other warranty in place, your users can simply press the LOGO WINDOWS + R and type CMD or diskmgmt.msc to do the same thing for the security of the solution of darkness here will help prevent tripping over.  Google is his friend for such things.  ;-)

  • "Import pictures and videos using Windows Live Photo Gallery" option is missing from AutoPlay in Windows 7 64 bit

I saw this question and answer:

    http://social.answers.Microsoft.com/forums/en-us/w7files/thread/5c567ab1-208D-400D-9bce-0598d43a0574

but I think I have a more serious problem. In Windows 7 RC, when I plugged in my camera or insert a memory card, I could choose "import pictures and videos using Windows Live Photo Gallery", but in my new installation of Windows 7 RTM, on which I have installed Windows Live Photo Gallery, there is no "Import pictures and videos using Windows Live Photo Gallery" option allotted me in the list of Control Panel AutoPlay or on the AutoPlay pop-up that appears when I plug in a camera.

How can I get that back? Without this option, I have to go through the manual steps tedious to execute WLPG and manually choose to import from there and say what is my camera. It was much better under Vista and Win7RC when I had the simple auto play option.

My PC is running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, but I also installed WLPG on two new computers Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit my parents, and they have exactly the same problem. Is this a known bug? Is there a solution?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
