Where can I check the current VEC level and enable or disable?... .for some reason, I can't.

VCA is a cluster environment. If you create a cluster in your data center, you will not be able to configure CVS.

    Please ensure that all virtual machines are powered off & you also need to enable intel vt in the bios for VCA inorder work. Once you have enable in the bios, that it is advisable to perform a full power rather than right cycle start the system.

  • Impossible to activate CVS

    I have a site using two hosts ESXi 5.1 (fully patched) and vCenter. I recently added the second host which is a Dell R410.

    1 - host

    Dell PowerEdge r.620

    Intel Xeon CPU E5-2643

    Host 2:

    Dell PowerEdge R410

    Intel Xeon E5620 CPU

    According to the compatibility guides I found online, should be no problem with the 2600 series and 5600 series processors. I have another site using the same Dell r.620 E5-2643 and a Dell R510 E5640 with EVC Intel Westmere generation active.

    When I try to activate CVS, I get the error saying -.

    The host cannot be admitted to the current cluster Enhanced vMotion compatibility mode. Under voltage or suspension of the virtual machines on the host can use the CPU features hidden by this mode. Host1-esxi1.

    He's going to say that for all modes except Sandy Bridge VCA, then said that host2-esxi1 is the problem of children.

    They are in a cluster and I tried to remove the cluster, activation CVS first, then re - add host... but the HOST1 re-will not add as he noticed that the CEV is enabled. Any ideas?

    Another thing you can try (in a maintenance window) is to stop the VM, then select CVS and start everything up again.

    Class workstation machines are usually not certified by VMware, or the hardware vendor there.

    EVC should still work OK.  You will be limited to L1 - Intel Penryn due processor L5410.  When you create the cluster, the host to the cluster add first and then select CVS.

    No, he complains he has propelled there on the virtual machines that efficiently use the advanced features of the CPU, what it basically says is 'you will be downgrading the processor in the virtual machines' so you'll need to power virtual machines turn off the first and then select CVS then power back on and they will pick up the new CPU settings at startup.

    These will be the virtual machines on the G7 welcomes only without having to turn on the G6

  • Can not turn on CVS on blades with Intel E7320 and E5440 processor

    Does anyone know hot to activate CVS on the esx host, one with 2xQuad Core Intel E7320 CPU, the other with 2xQuadCore Intel E5440 CPU?

    When I try to add hosts in active cluster with CVS, I get the message that CPU hardware must support CVO.

    In the BIOS, the only option I have found is Intel VT, and activate.

    The hosts are G5 blades HP.

    Here are the bios settings that I use on blades BL680c G5 and BL460c G1 running ESX 3.5 and CVS works very well

    Integrated Serial Port disabled

    Virtual Serial Port disabled

    Integrated NIC: Boot Options disabled

    For Proliant power regulator Mode static High Performance HP

    Processor options: HW Prefetcher disabled

    Processor options: sector Adjacent Prefetch disabled

    Processor options: No.-Execute memory Protection enabled

    Options of processor: Intel Virtualization Technology active

    Processor power and the use of monitoring disabled

    No.-Execute memory Protection that is required for the VCA, other parameters are just performance tuning.

    Remember that you can not activate EVC cluster that already has ESX hosts on him. Create new cluster, select CVS and drag your ESX hosts old cluster to the new cluster, this is how you can activate CVS already production use ESX host.

    It's called Windows Mail, not Windows Media.

    Export you contacts in CSV (common separated values) in a folder, save to a flash drive.

    Open Windows Mail > at the top of the file > export > Windows Contacts > select CVS > export > select a folder, name your CSV file > save

  • Server Migration problem

    I'm planning on migrating a number of servers between the 2 groups in the same data center. At the present time, that the two groups do not have access to the adapter network same vMotion is not possible, it is very good and will be resolved shortly. However I get an error but another message which reads as follows:

    I'm assuming it's because the processors on hosts are slightly different between the two groups, all hosts in two clusters are IBM HS23 blades but...

    Can someone please advise if there is anything I can do to get rid of this error, if I turned off the VMs system first I can migrate their and they function without problem however, I really want to avoid if possible system failures.


    I'm assuming that the solution may involve the CVS (this is currently disabled on the two clusters) but I would like that confidence that allowing this cause no problem for connection etc.

    It's true. you need downtime to allow CVS on an existing cluster.

    but that's why I suggesting a different solution.

    (1) create a new cluster, select CVS on that.

    -Please find planning intel CPU would be appropriate for your two models that you plan to mix. [Let me give you a simple example, if I have two hosts of AMD, one with AMD Optron G1 and the other with AMD Optron G2 CPU, I would create a cluster of empty with active VCA, basis for VCA updated AMD Optron generation 1, powerdown all VMs running in both hosts, put them in maintenance mode and drag the cluster out of maintenance mode and begin to power on virtual machines]

    -you have two processors in your next guests clustered computers. I don't know too much what appropriate Intel CPU would be at there place for them, please try to find this first release.

    Group 1 - Inter (R) Xeon CPU E5 - 26700 2.60 GHz

    Group 2 - Inter (R) Xeon CPU E5-2650v2 @ 2.60 GHz

    (2) now clear out a host of each departure of cluster 1 and 2, which will be your initial test environment, bringing virtual machines in this third group. While doing this, you may need migration cold of the two clusters, but more likely, you would be able to bring virtual machines to at least one of your cluster using vMotion.

    (3) if things work out well for you, free plan all hosts to join this group and get rid of the remaining clusters of empty.

  • ESXi 4.1 Westmere EVC does not not with Ivy Bridge CPU

    I'm under 4.1U3. I have a cluster that has 8 guests inside. 6 of them are processors E7-2860. Two of them are processors E5-2680v2 (new). vCenter will allow me to select CVS. However after activated and I turn on a few virtual machines on one of the new hosts it tells me "the cluster cannot be configured with vMotion compatibility mode Enhanced selected; Features CPU disabled by this mode are currently in use by power or suspended virtual machines in the cluster. »

    Also, when I try to migrate one of these virtual machines for new guests to one of the E7-2860 hosts it won't pass validation saying "CPU host is incompatible with the requirements of the virtual machine to leval CPUID register 0 x 1"ecx".»

    The only thing I can think is the E5-2680v2 is not supported on 4.1 and so CVS is not working properly. Any ideas on that?

    I tried to add this line, but there was no change.

    I found that if I change

    cpuidMask.val.1.eax = '0 x 00020651' (the value defined by VCA)

    TO

    cpuidMask.val.1.eax = "0x000106a4".

    vMotion will validate.

    I found that by creating a new cluster and defining the level of evc to Nehalem. I put one of the new hosts in this cluster and observed what has changed/etc/vmware/config. I noticed that the following values have been defined in the new cluster.

    cpuidMask.val.1.eax = "0x000106a4".

    cpuidMask.val.1.ecx = "0x0098e23d".

    So I put this host in the cluster of origin and the value of these values and vmotion worked. The two vmotion from the new host for other hosts and also hosts of origin to the new host has worked.

    So I tried just to set the value of eax and leaving the ecx value to the default value of the bunch and who also worked. So I don't know why vCenter is reporting an issue with the register ecx register when its eax which was the problem.

    If at this point, I think that my options are to create a cluster with the new hosts until we have upgraded 5.5 or walking with the value of eax changed for now. The problem with running with the changed value is vCenter it resets the host goes into maintenance mode or reset.

  • Moving hosts between active EVC clusters (going from 4.1 to 5.5)

    This is my first post here on communities and I hope it will be a great moment

    Currently, we are running a cluster of production unique (4.1U3a vCenter) made 10 IBM x 3850 X 5 hosts where:

    • 5 guests have X 7560 Intel processors (ESXi 4.1U3)
    • 5 guests have CPUs of E7 - 8837 Intel (ESXi 4.1U3)

    Cluster is active EVC: Nehalem Genesis (Xeon Core i7)

    He must now leave whole cluster existing 4.1U3a vCenter for a new vCenter 5.5U1 constantly of the VMs system (we cannot touch/upgrading old vCenter). Is it not possible? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I want to do this way:

    1. Disable HA and DRS on 4.1U3a Cluster (let such VCA what)
    2. Disconnect the 4.1U3a Cluster hosts (a)
    3. Once that all hosts are disconnected remove hosts in the cluster 4.1U3a (one)
    4. Create new Cluster on 5.5U1 vCenter
    5. Select CVS on the new Cluster 5.5U1 vCenter (and set it to Nehalem Genesis (Xeon Core i7), as was the old 4.1U3a vCenter)
    6. Add a host 5.5U1 vCenter, off the new cluster (on the level of data center)
    7. Move newly added welcome the new active EVC Cluster to vCenter 5.5U1
    8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for all remaining hosts
    9. Turn on HA and DRS on the new Cluster on 5.5U1 vCenter
    10. Test of vMotion and to each ESXi (and pray it works)

    This plan could work? I was testing this on the lab environment and all seems OK, but I'm afraid I missed something. As far as I understand CVS it should work as long as I'm not power cycle all VM during the hosts 'move '.

    Normally you can not add directly to a cluster as when you import the host to vCenter he does not see as having enabled EVC and is safe.  I was wondering for the sake of ease, not want you back up the database from the old server and put this backup on the new and just update?  It may contain some old information, you may not, but that would mean that your hosts basically would come immediately upward in the cluster without having to do all that extra work.  Also do not go to the 5.5 Update 1 if you use NFS.

  • Activate the VCA Mode of VMware vCenter Server Appliance

    I'm pretty new on vSphere.  I have two hosts running esxi 5.1 what one of these hosts running the "VMware vCenter Server Appliance' with vSphere version 5.5.  I currently have a single cluster containing all the VMS as well hosts and the SAN.

    I try to activate the EVC mode, but when I try it tells me that the host is not allowed because there are powered on virtual machines.  I can turn off all the virtual machines except the vCenter device and I still get the problem on the host that has the device on it.  If I turn off the unit, I can't use vSphere to activate CVS.

    How can I activate CVS when vSphere does not work?

    Hi Welcome to the communities,

    This one is a bit complicated

    You have:

    1. turn off all VMs on Host1 (while vCenter device is on Host2)

    2 bring Host1 on Cluster, select CVS clustered.

    3. put all the virtual machines on Host2 (also vCenter device)

    4. connect on Host2 directly to vSphere Client Windows

    5. remove the vCenter inventory unit

    6. connect on Host1 directly to vSphere Client Windows

    7. the data store when the appliance and add it to the inventory of research. Power on

    8. connect the device with Web client or vSphere vCenter

    9. move the second host in the cluster

    And you're done

    Does anyone know if there is a case to daydream using EVC combining a Sandybridge cluster (new HP BLC460 G8s) with the slightly older G7s who use the Westmere? I have

    would not have to use EVC and loose some of the features on the new chipsets, but that said, Im not totally aware if there is a conflict and we use EVC, how much it affects performance.

    You need to use CVS for migration between Westmere and Sandy Bridge CPUs. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003212 for a list of changes:

    Intel 'Sandy Bridge' generation

    Applies the basic features of the processors of the generation game 'Sandy Bridge' Intel® to all hosts in the cluster.  Compared to the Intel 'Westmere' generation mode, this EVC mode exposes additional CPU including AVX and XSAVE features.

    Note: Intel 'Sandy Bridge' processors that do not support AESNI and PCLMULQDQ is not admitted to the EVC modes higher than the generation mode 'Nehalem' Intel®.

    If you will not be able to benefit of AVX and XSAVE instructions games.

    It all comes down to a compromise, you should consider: If you want the flexibility to mix of clusters/migrate virtual machines between hosts of different generations of CPU, select CVS by using the lowest common denominator, which in this case is Westmere.

    The question you ask yourself now is how refraining from some new instructions results in the loss of real world performance, and this question is impossible to answer. There are some very specific as things AES-NI (already included in Westmere) which could bring you significant gains in some synthetic benchmarks. But unless you can identify and assess whether your applications really enjoy them, and you might as well an of to get your answer.

    At least, you can be sure, that he should not be worse than your current Westmeres, assuming that the #core frequency and similar caches. Given the optimizations internal, transparent in the architechture of CPU, it should even be faster out of the box.

    So much for today's software behave as processors of today are still basically " 386 overclocked at their base.

    I think I would sacrifice some obscure new CPU instruction on the flexibility gained any day. Unless I could really benefit from these new guidelines, or it didn't need as much flexibility. In my opinion, the last really significant change side of Intel which warranted a sacrificing exceptionally high flexibility, has been the introduction of Intel's Nehalem architecture. More than 3 years ago.

  • VCA enabling on ESXi 4.1

    I'm going to need allow EVC on the DRS Clusters in my ESXi 4.1 environment vCenter server is on a virtual machine. I read the following KB

    My question is is it really necessary to create a cluster and follow the steps in this KB? Can I not only turn off all my virtual machines to a particular cluster and select CVS then return on the virtual machines? I have two groups one is a 'cluster of infrastructure' that contains the servers such as vCenter, SQL etc. I will not be allowing CVS on this group. I have a second "Cluster VDI" group who I will be allowing EVC. So on that VDI cluster may I've just turning off the option activate VMS VCA, then power the virtual machines on?

    Welcome to communities!

    KB1013111 you are talking about is applicable only for vCenter 4.0.x I guess you already vCenter 4.1 running in your environment.

    Note: It is possible to add a host with an EVC cluster VMS running as long as none of the virtual machines on the host running instructions not supported by the EVC baseline with vCenter Server 4.1. If any virtual computer executes a statement not supported by the basis, that a warning is displayed.  For more information see the Guide of Administration of Datacenter vSphere.

    If you plan to activate the VCA on the cluster if vCenter fails then you should be good to STOP the virtual machine, put the host in MM and select CVS. Reference KB1009571

  • Active EVC clusters?

    Are you guys, configuration of your clusters with EVC enabled or disabled?

    Just curious, if you lose functionality/performance by selecting CVS on your clusters?

    N ° activation, you will be given a list of the modes of EVC capatible that your could choose based on the variety of CPU in the cluster and you must choose the highest mode.

  • Adding host

    Hello

    If I post in the wrong Forum, please let me know.

    Intend to add another host to our VMware existing environment and I am after some advice.

    Currently have 2 x identical hosts.

    HP Proliant DL380 G5 Xeon 5440 2.83 GHz Quad Core

    G5/G6 stuff are obviously fine line, if we look at something again, which would be a DL380 G7. Something like a X 5650 of Xeon 2.66 GHz.

    Being a top spec machine, I need to know if I can add this new host in my existing environment, without losing any functionality? VMotion and high availability etc.?

    I read the opposing arguments that this functionality will be lost, because the difference in CPU speeds etc will kill the AP but then however he is indifferent to everything and HA will work OK, because these two circuits are Intel and they are not miles of generations apart (and the new host will take place just at the same level as the older hosts).

    Any information or still playback on this would be much appreciated?

    If you add new hosts in an existing cluster, more than likely you will have to select CVS.
