VCA enabling on ESXi 4.1

I'm going to need allow EVC on the DRS Clusters in my ESXi 4.1 environment vCenter server is on a virtual machine. I read the following KB

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1013111

My question is is it really necessary to create a cluster and follow the steps in this KB? Can I not only turn off all my virtual machines to a particular cluster and select CVS then return on the virtual machines? I have two groups one is a 'cluster of infrastructure' that contains the servers such as vCenter, SQL etc. I will not be allowing CVS on this group. I have a second "Cluster VDI" group who I will be allowing EVC. So on that VDI cluster may I've just turning off the option activate VMS VCA, then power the virtual machines on?

Thank you!

Welcome to communities!

KB1013111 you are talking about is applicable only for vCenter 4.0.x I guess you already vCenter 4.1 running in your environment.

Note: It is possible to add a host with an EVC cluster VMS running as long as none of the virtual machines on the host running instructions not supported by the EVC baseline with vCenter Server 4.1. If any virtual computer executes a statement not supported by the basis, that a warning is displayed.  For more information see the Guide of Administration of Datacenter vSphere.

If you plan to activate the VCA on the cluster if vCenter fails then you should be good to STOP the virtual machine, put the host in MM and select CVS. Reference KB1009571

  • Remote Shutdown ESXi servers

    Good day everyone!

I use ESXi 5.5.0 on Dell and HP servers. I can remote shut down all virtual machines inside servers, but I don't know how to stop remote servers.

    We will explain:

When the power source is lost. I have only one auto power off server that plugs directly into the inverter. Before its closure, a command script will be executed at the stop other servers on the network (including virtual machines). But the ESXi server that still store virtual machines running. I do not know how to stop remotely (by command, or 3rd software...). I'm worried about my data may be lost if the ESXi servers are not safe stop.

    Another question:

If I can stop the ESXi server remotely. Do I have to stop a virtual machines before you stop the real server? Or I can use 'virtual machine startup/shutdown' options to auto shut off all the virtual machine inside the ESXi Server?

I use the paid license 5.5.0 of ESXi and vCenter 5.5.0.

    Thanks in advance!

If the virtual machines are not safely stop and then start/stop option can be disabled in the host.

launch the vsphere client session to the ESXi server and verify that the settings are activated.

Regarding ssh, it is nothing more than a protocol like RDP connection for unix machines

We have a tool called Putty to establish an ssh session to the ESXi server. Follow the steps in the article, select ssh shell alone is not necessary. Use the method to do, vsphere client it will be easier

  • Can't connect after upgrade to ESXi 5

After upgrading ESX 4.0.0. for ESXI 5, we are not able to connect console to esx server, there are two choices F2 or F12. I have already set up all the parameters F2, as Ip address, host name...

Could you please tell how to get or connect to the console command root? even I can't use mastic to apply commands.

    Kind regards

    Ahmed

Hello.  Even if SSH has been activated before the upgrade then reactivated later.

Select F2 and log in as root.

In the menu, select Troubleshooting Options

Select enable the ESXi environment and press ENTER - this allows the shell local ESXi (use Alt - F1 to access)

Select enable SSH and press ENTER - this allows SSH

SSH can also be activated from vSphere Client host-> Configuration-> Security Profile

  • 1000V - Importance of the ' system vlan "in port-profile

    Hi all

Can someone help me understand the importance of the command "system vlan" in a profile of port?

As I understand it, it was used to mark the criticisms of the system VLAN (package, data, etc.) to their config was pushed to vCenter so that they would continue to work the MSM should be down. Is this fair?

All of the examples I have watch seems to just mark every VLAN (data VM even VLAN) as "system vlan" in their profiles of prot ethernet uplink. Now that is best practice?

In addition, there is a reason to mark vEthernet with control panel ports vlan?

    See you soon,.

    P

As you already wear that system vlan is to ensure access to the vlan vsm to go down and then the esxi host is reset. If the system vlan was not enabled host esxi would not be able to talk to the vsm, but this is only the case if the management port using the Cisco VDS and not a VSS or VDS.

as I mainly use servers with only 2 ports 10 GB I use system VLAN for ESXi management / storage and vMotion and if the vCenter is a virtual machine, then also the vlan that uses. all other VLANS I don't not in the category system VLAN.

I use also a VSM Layer 3 so no need to worry the VLAN the packet and data.  But I use that I have several farms esxi in a different subnets from the management and the 1000v in a subnet for network management.

    I hope this helps.

    1. go to the data store--> select storage views--> then apply different filters to see DS space utlization by VMs, instant.

    2. enable ssh esxi host and log in with the username/password of root and orders below

    #cd vmfs/volumes /.

    #du-sh *.

This will list all the files/dir on this data store and its size in GB.

  • Updated NIC now I can't connect to vSphere

I have a system with ESXi installed 5.x, I made changes to NICs because for some reason they were only running in half duplex mode for some reason any. The card has been set to Auto and I forced it 100 Full and then I lost the connection to vSphere. I now can not connect to vSphere because it was networking... What can I do now? Im not too experienced with ESXi so Im at a loss.

    TIA

    Hi AmDD,

Great that you have access KVM! You can do the following to get management on your ESXi rogue server:

    1. Press and then logon with 'Root' and password
    2. Select Troubleshooting Options in the customization of the system screen
    3. Press to enable the ESXi environment so that it displays ESXi Shell is selected in the right pane
    4. Press to the local shell
    5. 'Root' login and password

At this point, you should have a shell with ~ # on the screen and a cursor blinking on ready for the entry. If this is the case then continue

    1. Run network vswitch standard list esxcli (assumes that you use a standard vSwitch and not a distributed vSwitch)
    2. Note uplink associated with this vSwitch (read the physical network adapters)
    3. Run network nic set-n vmnic5 - esxcli has
    4. Repeat for all the vmnic related delinquency vSwitch

Once you have confirmed you have taken over the management of the perpetrator, then you can store as follows:

    1. Press to return to the DCUI
    2. Follow steps 1-3 in the first section, but make sure that esxi Shell is disabled
    3. Press can again to disconnect from the DCUI
    4. Grab a cold beverage of your choice and sit back to relax

Note: This is not strictly necessary but does not remove the fingerprints

  • ESXi5 supports nested virtualization?

    Hi friends

I have a requirement to install RHEL6 Guest OS on a host of ESXi5 RHEL6. Is it possible to install or do you need to change something or the ESXi5 does simply not support? I tried to install it like that and it is said that:

Connection pooling error ' qemu: / / / system': internal error can not find the emulator suitable for x86_64.

It is possible in VMware workstation. There is an option in the settings of the VM who: Virtualiza Inter VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/IVR

but I could not find in ESXi5.

    Any suggestion is very grateful.

To get the login prompt on the screen of ALT - F1, you must first enable shell access in the DCUI as explained in the article that Dave provided.

    In short:

    • Connect on the DCUI by pressing "F2".
    • Select "Troubleshooting Options.
    • Select 'enable the ESXi environment '.

  • Virtual ESXi / nested virtualization and VCA

    Hi all

We tried to install some new virtual ESXi servers in our dev environment. to help our R & D.

The problem is that our clusters must be activated EVC - Merom Genesis so that R & D for work stuff.

I tried to use the following two articles:

    http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2011/07/how-to-enable-support-for-nested-64bit.html

    http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2012/02/how-to-configure-nested-ESXi-5-to.html

After finishing the first link, the ESXi virtual is able to run 64-bit virtual machines. So all is well (although I stumbled upon both problems with this - apparently, you can't physical host the virtual ESX running in a CVS in the first place of accommodation).

So after the ESXi virtual is able to run machines virtual 64-bit, I continue to the 2nd link and it doesn't work. I do exactly what the guy said there is still the virtual ESXi is not compatible with the EVC cluster and the 64 bit hosted on the virtual ESXi VM cannot run after changes to the CPUID mask.

Someone knows something similar? Someone has ideas of what I'm doing wrong or can give me some ideas on what to do?

    Thanks in advance,

    Nitzan.

In my view, the following option:

    CPUID.1.ECX = 00000000000000001010001000011001

    should be

    CPUID.1.ECX = 00000000000000001010001000111001

  • The benefits of enabling LDAP authentication for ESXi hosts?

    Hello

We have been and need to justify the advantages and disadvantages of joining ESXi hosts to Active Directory?

    Thanks 4 your help.

I see a benefit for sure you can assign complete administrative privileges to individual users in a group. If you assume a group of 10 directors of ESX, individual users can connect to the host via LDAP. Will they make changes or crash the system, you will know who did it. You can follow the verification very easily using this method. Otherwise, everyone will connect as root, and we do not know who is to blame when something crashed, etc.

It's pretty easy to join the ESXi host in AD and I don't see any problem that I respect. It is individual decision whether to implement or not.

  • Enabling VCA with VirtualCenter VM

I'll have some time to x - mas in power on all my virtual machines and need some ideas on my plan to activate CVS on my cluster.

    My environment:

    3 identical hosts - ProLiant DL585 G2

    ESX 3.5u2

VirtualCenter 2.5u2 running in a virtual machine

I can't migrate with virtual machines running. I get the "Incompatibility of CPUID" error when I try migrate running virtual machines in the EVC cluster enabled, so I will need to stop all my virtual machines to activate CVS. The following plan would work?

    1. Shutdown all computers, virtual and leave the VC running virtual machine.

    2. Set host1 in maintenance mode.

    3. Move outside the cluster host1.

    4. Exit mode maintenance on host1.

    5. VMotion VM VC on host1.

    6. Select CVS on the cluster containing host2 and host3.

    7. Clone VM VC - leave it turned off the power.

    8. Migrate powered off clone VC to host2.

    9. Shutdown VM VC.

    10. Plug VIC on host2.

    11. Turn it on cloned VM VC.

    12. Connect to VIC to cloned VM VC.

    13. Migrate original host2 VC VM power off.

    14. Cloned VC VM shutdown.

    15. Plug VIC on host2.

    16. Turn on the original VC VM.

    17. Connect to VIC to original VC VM.

    18. Set host1 in maintenance mode.

    19. Move host1 in the cluster.

    20. Exit mode maintenance on host1.

    21. Delete cloned VM VC.

    Hello

It seems that it will work.  Not sure I would clone the virtual machine however. Here's what I'd do:

Stop all virtual but VC computers.

    Stop host2 and Host3

During feeding on the update of the BIOS to host2/host3 allow AMD - V and the NX/XD Bit

    Make a new Cluster.

Join the host2 to the cluster

    Select CVS on the CLuster

Join the host3 to the cluster

    Shutdown VC VM on host1

migrate VM VC to new cluster

    Power on VM VC

Make sure that everything in the works of cluster

    Power off Host1

Updated BIOS for host1 to enable AMD - V and the NX/XD Bit

    Join Host1 to new Cluster

    Recreate Pools of resources

    Reorganize the VMs

    VMs boot

There should be no need to clone the machine virtual of VC.
