Select the system desktop icons

In Windows XP and Windows 7, I can choose which system icons appear on the desktop (Recycle Bin, etc.) by right clicking on the desktop or using customize in the control panel.

How do I do this in Vista?

Hello

I suggest you try the following steps to customize your desktop and check if it helps.

a. right-click on your desktop and click on personalize.

b. click on Change desktop icons.

c. now, select the icons you want to display on the Desktop Icon Settings window desktop.

(d) to change the icon image: select the icon and click on the Change icon button and select the icon image and click Ok.

Also, see the following Microsoft articles and check if that helps.

Looks like you may have a virus or other malware. Get your updated antivirus program and boot into Safe Mode. Note that some viruses can hide from your normal antivirus program, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode. To enter in Safe Mode when you turn on first, press F8 on every seconds until you get the menu, and then select Safe Mode. Then run a complete system scan.

If that suits him fine. If this is not the case, use system restore to go back to an earlier date at the beginning of the problem. To run system restore, click Start-> programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> system restore. Click on the box that says show more restore points.

    -

You can check the corrupted system files. Open an administrator command prompt and run SFC if the above does not help. Click START, and then type CMD in the search box, right-click on CMD. EXE and click run as administrator. Then, from the command prompt type sfc/scannow.

Finally if all else fails, you can look at the rather cryptic system event log. To make, click Start-> Control Panel-> administration-> event viewer tools. Once in Event Viewer system log-click and scroll entries looking for these "error" with indicator see if you can find guidance on where the problem may be.

When you get your system in good working condition, I invite you to back up your system up to an external hard drive and make it regular periodic updates.

  • Lack of the "Change desktop icons" option in my control panel

Im trying to restore the icons of 'Trash' and 'My computer' original on my desk.

Ive played a lot with these before settings on other computers, all of which is running Windows XP or earlier. I can't find the appropriate options in the Control Panel on my vista computer. Many forums indicate the "Change desktop icons" option should be "Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization", but the link does not exist in my control panel.

Is there a way I can make this option appear?

    Hello

In the control/customization panel (or right-click on the desktop and choosing Properties), the ability to change the desktop icons under tasks in the left column, will not be like a link in the Center. • Hilighting of the XP desktop icon problem (Special!: O)

    Hello

    The problem
Basically, the text on my desktop icons is black hilighted. even if I change the background color of Uni, the text is hilighted in black and the icons are hilighted selected color. I did everything the shadows litters, lock web icons ext. I don't have a web on my desktop icon to my desktop wallpaper show (see below) that says everywhere is the cause of the hilighting. It's certainly a strange case, but I was wondering if you could shed some light on my problem.
    A bit of history
A few months ago, I downloaded a skin for my laptop (and a patch of registry), everything works perfectly... until I noticed that my desktop background is gone. The problem was the patcher, because even if I use a different skin background disappeared. If I close my background shows explorer.exe. Today I did drag a picture on my desk and it creates a web item, my background shows, but the text is hilighted. If the web icon is removed the builds.
Hope that makes a bit of sense (I'm not terrible to descriptive writing)
    Thank you
    Mike

Microsoft advised of is not "patch" as you did it.  A reinstallation of Windows XP would take you to a 'factory' as if you just bought a new camera.

I couldn't find recovery discs for Windows XP from the links you gave - the second was an error page.

However, the third link led me to this page which tells the story of PC Restore where you can reinstall your system.  It does not give a repair option that would let all your personal files intact but will restore the operating system to the original default settings.  Downstairs you will find a phone # contact technical support.  However, it can be a waste of time to ask about buying recovery CD because Windows XP is no longer sold or taken in charge by Microsoft and their store offers Windows 7 only.

Manual reinstall requires a CD/DVD.    I buy a recovery CD just in case there is yet a preinstalled on my unit recovery option.  If you can make your own from the link I mentioned earlier, it may be wise to do so.

I then use the switch to stop, which is clearly not the best way to ensure the longtivity of my system.  I use El Capitan 10.11.3 [latest version] I have tried the following but still the same issue.

  • Cannot use, "save under" to save the information in the missing desktop icon

Whenever I try to use the, "Save as" command in Word 2007 or the appearance of Windows 7 theme page to save on the Desktop icon on the left side of the page, it is impossible, because the Desktop icon disappeared completely.

This means I have to record information in example Library\Documents, why?

    Anyone solve the problem?

How to reset the Windows path, which should allow me, "save under" information and possibly other paths to the desktop (icon)?

The desktop icon is normally located in the "Favorites" group at the top of the left pane. Click on the small arrow next to Favorites to show the links it contains.

If she's really gone then you can put it to go back easily.  Open Windows Explorer, find your desktop folder, select it, drag it to the favorite icon to the top of the left pane, drop it on the Favorites.  Who put it there.  [He puts a shortcut on the desktop in the favorite group]

Note that Favorites is extremely poorly named.  It has nothing to do with favorites, you are probably familiar with Internet Explore.  It's actually a set of shortcuts in whatever you chose to put files and its list is displayed in C:\Users\yourusername\Links if you take a look here.
