Service Console port group

I have a test box that I started to use a VLan tagging with. Unfortunately, I forgot to place the service console port group. Is there a way to change the port group to service the console kvm CLI console?

You can define a VLAN with command portgroup esxcfg-vswitch-p - v vlanid

  • Console port of service on the network of prodution

    Hello world

I took my VMware business infrastructure so it is a right mess this weekend I rebuild my host esx due a number of reasons, but this is not what I'm asking.

in the current configuration of my hosts the service console port is connected to my production network which as far as I can remember is a big no, no, form VMware

someone can confirm this and if so someone can point me to some documentation to support

    Hello

A best practice is to keep the console service outside of your production environment. You might consider to introduce a segment of the management. If your physical switches supports VLANS and trunking (dot1q) I would advice to start to use those. By putting trunks in your ESX hosts, you can network segments are all now failover with ease. Don't forget that you need a router or a firewall somewhere segments to communicate with each other.

In a small environment, you might consider running all one happy LAN segment. It's all about security. In this scenario, the users of your production network would have access to the ESX Server service console. These service consoles are not particularly weak from a safety point of view, it's more the 'fact of having' this kind of facility that makes it less secure... Ask yourself the question: what is your business has for the security measures and rules? Do you have DRAC/ILO as the server inside your production network management consoles as well? Because they must be part of a network of remote management as well, if you choose to follow this best practice...

  • Can I create a second service console in ESX 2.5.5?

Can I create a second service console in ESX 2.5.5?

    Yes, I did in ESX 3. +, but I can not find/check it's ok in ESX 2.5.

    Procedures, orders or comments appreciated.

    ALL POINTS WILL BE AWARDED.

No, you can not - the service in ESX 2.x actuallys console loads before the vmkernel and has control over its own NETWORK card and the physical memory - in esx 3.x (vSphere) the VMkernel charge first and provides these resources to the service console allowing you to create several service console ports -

  • public network for virtual machines, private storage and the service console?

    Hello

So far I had a pretty small facility with 2 servers with 4 physical network adapters each running ESX 3.5, a small box of EqualLogic SAN to shared storage and a few virtual machines on our network of regular reinforcement, routed, not on a private.   The network config was really simple.  I just put everything on real IP addresses on our network of building.

Now I want to move the SAN and the traffic on a private service console network, but I don't know how to do this.

Right now I use 2 NETWORK cards on each server:

vmnic0 is configured on vSwitch0 and has the network of the VM on it that all my use of VMS to talk to the outside world, and it also has the Service Console that uses Virtual Center and I use ssh to it.

vmnic1 is configured on vSwitch1 and a VMKernel Port and also a Service Console Port for iSCSI Software to talk to my SAN.  (never been clear on why both are needed to talk to the SAN, but doctors say they are)

My plan is to set up a vSwitch2 and bind it to vmnic2 and implemented a VMKernel Port and the Service Console Port for software iSCSI on the 10.x.x.x network, set up my new (larger) SAN box on the 10.x.x.x network and simply use Storage vMotion to move virtual machines to the new storage space.  As soon as I did this, I would like to not use the Service Console on vSwitch2 and not a Console Service at all on vSwitch0.  Is it possible to delete the one on vSwitch0 and just use a new vSwitch2 for Virtual Center and ssh access?

So my proposed configuration would be:

vSwitch0: VM network only, used by the VM guests for oriented public access network, no construction of Network Service Console, linked to vmnic0

vSwitch1: superfluous once I do storage vMotion of everything on my old SAN, will eventually remove and pair vmnic 1 with vmnic0, linked to vmnic1

vSwitch2: VMKernel and Service Console on the network 10.x.x.x, used to access the new SAN, used by Virtual Center to access the ESX, used to SSH in to ESX on private network, associated vmnic2

    If it works?

    Thank you.

    Hello

VMkernel ports cannot live on the same subnet. So if you have 3 vmkernel ports say: vMotion, iSCSI and NFS. You really need 3 subnets. 1 for each vmkernel port.

Otherwise how does he know all send properly?

  • Failed to create the Service Console

    Hello

Anyone could answer this, why I can't create service console? For some reason, the service console did not appear as an option in the Network Setup Wizard dialog box. Any clue?

    http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/6160/ServiceConsoleMissing.jpg

    Thank you

    You use ESXi.

It is not a service console, and it is not a service console port.

You manage ESXi using a vmkernel interface.

  • Service console and VM kernel port group Question

I have the separate subnet of installation for the service console and the port the kernel VM group. Currently, I plan to install the software iSCSI adapter to connect the LUN. Is there something else I need to do to configure?

It is said that if the console VM kernel and service are in separate groups of port.

Usually I use a different physical network for iSCSI.

But if you only have two network adapters is not applicable.

Don't forget the vmkernel interface used for iSCSI is in the same logical network and same VLAN as your iSCSI target.

I need to create a service console more, I do not have it?

With ESX 3.x, you need a SC for iSCSI (or routing rules).

With ESX 4.x is not necessary.

  • Grouping of Vmotion and service console nic?

Hi, I would like to know if it is: 1: 2 Possible: recommended

3: how it is done?    Can I use an IP private available only to the ESX Servers (which is not known to the network) that is 192.168.24.24 while having the CD on a production network?  I'll have to do the two ports, ports of junction and create separate for a vmotion and SC port groups by specifying the ID of the vlan?

    Any input would be appreciated.

    1 Yes it is possible

    2 Yes, it is recommended

  • VMKernel port group

Here is the configuration of the network of one of our hosts ESX 4.1:

    (1) the virtual computer network

    (2) Service with 1 IP console

    (3) VMKernel with 1 IP for vMotion and iSCSI, called as VMKernel_iSCI

I can see there are 4 NICs attached to this host.

Now, I just know, that same using iSCSI and vMotion VMKernel is not a good practice.

    question 1

    So I would like to know how is the mapping of the ESX host's network. Is this;

    1 NETWORK card = 1 VM Network

    1 NETWORK card = 1 Service Console

1 card NETWORK = 1 which is currently used for iscsi and vmotion VMKernel port group

In a standard switch, there are 2 network cards configured.

    2nd question

I want to delete 1 port VMKernal vmotion (VMKernel_iSCI) and create a dedicated for vmotion.

    I know that I have will require another IP address, but what of NIC, it will be;

    1 NETWORK card = VMKernel_iSCSI

    1 NETWORK card = VMKernel_vMotion

    Please explain.

    Thank you

    Mihir

From a pure technical point of view, it will work, as long as your network is configured properly (i.e. taking advantage of VLAN and the separate subnets on management, vMotion and iSCSI). However, I am worried about the bandwidth and quarrels with such a configuration.

BTW. except if you've already seen it, I would recommend that you take a look at http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/virtual_networking_concepts.pdf

  • VMkernel and Service Console in the same vSwitch?

    Hello

Be aware that this may have been covered elsewhere (and I should be grateful if you would be redirected to the correct answer), but I need clarification on the installer to our servers ESX 4.1. I have a switch virtual vswitch1 with webcam live and test port groups running through a NIC 4 etherchannel trunk to a Cisco switch stack with load balancing of the IP Hash for our virtual machines (works fine).

Due to limited network adapters, I wanted to know if I could have the VMKernel (vmotion) and the Service Console on the same virtual switch (vSwitch0) but separated by VLAN ID in 2 groups of ports, run through an another etherchannel to our Cisco switches (mounting similar to vswitch1 etherchannel trunk). Are these two functions OK on the same vSwitch?

I say with this configuration, we will have redundancy with 2 network cards in vswitch0 and traffic will be isolated between the SC and vmotion with VLAN. Im not sure if best practices should have the VMkernel SC on separate vSwitches, or even if the VMkernel and HC would work even as a separate Exchange with an ID vswitch1 VLANS separated to release 2 network cards.

As a result, I read elsewhere, that a default installation with a switch distributed (that we want to use in the near future) would use a dvSwitch for VMs and a vSwitch for SC and functions VMKernel, separating them, so at this point would be a good idea.

    Any advice would be welcome.

    Thank you

    John

When I have 2 NICs for network management and vMotion, I use usually 1 vSwitch for them. I configure ports of physical switch as connection ports (no etherchannel), set the VLAN ID on port groups and configure groups of two ports for active / standby. For example, the management network has active vmnic0, Eve and vMotion active vmnic1 vmnic0 a vmnic1, as yesterday. In this way each "service" uses its dedicated uplink unless there is a failure.

BTW, you should consider installing instead of ESX ESXi, ESX 4.1 is the latest version of ESX. ESXi will only be available in the future and transition from ESX to ESXi requires a fresh install of the hosts.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be happening here?  It seems just as strange and undesirable behavior.

    Thanks for your suggestions!

OK, now I'm wondering why you have a vmkernel port named "Service Console" and a vswif port named "Service Console".  In classic ESX and ESXi not, your vmk0 port is not used by the Console of your Service, your port of vswif is, that's why you get arp updates, change the Mac.  You have actually added a duplicate IP address.  Here is my config.  You will see that there is no port vmkernel in use.  If you use this second IP for vmotion, then you need a different IP address for this portgroup.

  • Automate the network port group selection in vsphere replication

Hi, when you use the vsphere replication tool to recover servers in the data center of DR, the tool does not gives option to select network settings. I have to manually add the port groups and turn on the system remotely vcenter. Is it possible to automate this process, when the replication of a major part of the vms ~ 100-150. I would like to know if there is another way to fix the process and avoid the manual load.

I use replication of vsphere device version 5.8

    Thank you

The only way to automate this process is through the Site Recovery Manager.  Automate and orchestrate BC/DR is a big part of the value offered by SRM. The other advantage is the ability to test your recovery plans without disruption of service.

  • separate the vlan for the service console and vkernel

    Hi all

I need to restructure my environment uat and dev, keeping both under vcenter even. I run the machine with 4 NICs (currently using 2 each for sc + vk & vm port with eather channel gp). The reason behind this is that we have stored separately (using nfs) in uat and dev segment to be used by the servers (virtual and physical) in the respective segment. I'll take 2 clusters as uat and dev. wanted to help the same regardeing

    • wanted to know if I can get my service console and vmkernel running on VLANs separate as shown below
      • UAT cluster
        • SC - 10.10.11.x
        • VK - 10.10.12.x
      • dev cluster
        • SC - 10.10.11.x
        • VK - 10.10.50.x

kindly let me know for further information on above, any other suggestion on above will be useful

Yes your SC and VMkernel networks running on different VLANS will work - it is a best practice.

  • Change the id vlan of the Service Console and now can't connect

    Hello

My ESX 3.5 server was with a Service Console PG and a PG VMotion on vSwitch0. There are 2 physical NIC assigned to the vSwitch, which are transmitted to the 2 physical network switches.

Guys id assigned netoeking vlan 200 to 2 ports on the 2 natachasery physical switches is connected. In the VI client, if I change the properties of vSwitch0-> Console of Service and the value of the vlan 200, I completely lose connectivity to the host. I can't ping the IP address SC longer. I have a keyboard/screen connected to the host and when I connect to the SC, I can't ping the default gateway of the SC or whatever it is.

I used esxcfg-vswitch to set of the SC vlan id 0 (all) and bingo!, I can speak to the host again and he can talk. The network guys arrure me, they put the vlan id = 200 on the OK physical switch ports. So what goes wrong?

FWIW, we also have an ESX4 from same host configured the host to 3.5 and it communicates very well. It's the SC a vlan = 200 and issued for the same physical switches.

    George.

the switch port config are not the same between the hosts of working and non-working.  See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003806 for example config
