Settings of relevant security of XP in Windows 7?

I'm upgrading to Windows XP Pro SP3 to Windows 7 Pro SP1.  By reading my notes on the old installation, I found several settings which have been recommended in magazines, most of which I implemented in XP.  Here's the laundry list:

Services for the disabled:
(1) TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper - I didn't need this sub XP because I was using NetBEUI instead of NetBT to share files.  Now I use "Direct hosting of SMB over TCP/IP" instead of NetBT and NetBIOS is still disabled.  I need this service?
(2) service of Task Scheduler - doesn't seem to have all the dependencies, but maybe uses Microsoft to schedule virus scans (MSE) and/or Windows updates?
(3) service remote registry is currently set to "Manual" and has not started.  This looks like a bad guy.  I can it disable safely?
(4) server - I have no intention to serve anything.  I'm on a LAN-to-peer behind a router with sharing protected by password.

Other recommendations welcome.

Registry tweaks:
(1) RestrictAnonymous is currently set at 4.  As I remember, I was informed to 2.

Once again, welcome the other recommendations.  There must be some other registry settings, I did on XP, but I don't remember all those other security-related JCW2

Disabling Services is not a smart move. It leads to a system error, things work not and decrease in system performance. Leave the services to their default settings.

I GET A MESSAGE WHEN I TRY TO CHANGE THE WINDOWS FIREWALL SETTINGS - "DUE TO A PROBLEM NOT IDENTIFIED, WINDOWS CANNOT DISPLAY WINDOWS FIREWALL SETTINGS. HOW CAN I SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?

IN ADDITION, I USE AVG INTERNET SECURITY 2013 AND THAT THE FIREWALL IS ENABLED AND I SEEM TO BE PROTECTED.

Documentation AVG Internet Security 2013 States:

    Recommendation:

Generally it is not recommended to use more than one firewall on a single computer. Computer security is not enhanced if you install several firewalls. It is more likely that some conflicts between these two applications will occur. Therefore, we recommend that you use only one firewall on your computer and disable all others, thus eliminating the risk of potential conflicts and problems related to this.

You can read the AVG documentation by clicking on this link, and see section 6.5:

    http://AA-download.Avg.com/filedir/doc/AVG_Internet_Security/avg_isc_uma_en_2013_06.PDF

So, if you are using AVG firewall, it's wise to just disable the XP firewall for more than a firewall running at the same time can lead to performance problems.  Choose one or the other, but not both.

I thought installing AVG would understand this by itself, and you know what to do (used to) but I do not want to install AVG to see.

  • Invisible - Missing FOLDER - C:\Documents and Settings (not will appear in Explorer) in Windows 7

Re: Invisible - missing FOLDER - C:\Documents and Settings (not will appear in Explorer) in Windows 7

    Hi all

I have a stable working version of Windows 7 Pro.  (Yes sfc/scannow and chkdsk are 100%)  BUT here's my question and the problem...

Recently, all of a sudden - my file C:\Documents and settings folder (and of course all of the many folders and files it contains) is no longer present in the computer of Windows / Explorer.

Yes - I removed the skin system files in folder options (I'm relatively warned these basic commands) and all my other system hidden files appear perfectly.

Moreover, I KNOW that this directory and the files are still there on the drive, and Yes, they are immediately, when I use the command line (back of the old black box window) in administrator mode.

Once again all the folders and files in C:\documents and settings are always there (using the cd and dir/p orders) when you use the editor command line (cmd).

I even tried to change the parameters of security using Icacls and delivered successfully as Administrators security settings: F and system: F but nothing appears in the Explorer.

I also tried to change the command attrib to this directory with my very basic command-line skills.

The computer still works fine - as many of you probably know the C:\documents and settings folder is really an older and former OS directory now used for programs inherited, replaced by C:\Users... etc.

But why have - so MS put in the OS. There are of course good reasons so - I want show back again.

I tried a system restore but I only got one and it can also have been corrupted since it took me a day or two to notice.

In summary, when a directory and files 'all of a sudden disappear completely' use widely and all days 'window of windows Explorer normal 7' you know that something is badly broken in the operating system.

BTW - Yes all Windows 7 updates made and successful... (no easy feat)

Any ideas out there your technical assistants.

    Thanks in advance
    James 4621

They do, but I do not really recommend yet.  But I at least trust him more than any 3rd party.  It is not a download if it is an online as part of the Windows Live Safety Scanner scanner.

And as I went to look for a link, it seems that safety.live.com now re - headed the new scanner, which is a download :)
I don't think that this news has a record cleaning component.  But as I said, is never necessary.  The invalid entries in the registry do slow down your startup time, or cause any problem, unless of course, you get an error message because another program tried to use an entry invalid.  But automated scanners are much too aggressive.  He thinks that an entry is not used, doesn't mean some program, somewhere, some time want.

  • I'll always be able to get security patches, etc. for Windows Vista SP2 now that support has ended?

I tried to look in a few different places for a clear answer... I use Windows Vista Home Premium (x 64) with Service Pack 2, and I noticed that "mainstream support" for Vista seems to have ended in April 2012. Does this mean that I no longer able to get the security updates, etc., through Windows Update? I'm a user at home and as far I can tell that Vista has "extended support" until 2017, but I don't think that this applies to individuals.

I actually really like Vista and want to continue to use it for several years yet.
Any help would be appreciated, I already looked upwards (must be almost all) Microsoft sites but can't find a simple answer.
    Thank you

  • Norton Internet Security 2010 automatically close Windows Defender? __

    My set up:

Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium, Vista SP2

    HP Desktop

    Modem DSL Connection

    Norton Internet Security 2010

I just installed Norton Internet Security 2010. I get a pop up notice of Windows indicating that Windows Defender is disabled. When I had Norton Antivirus/spyware 2008 (that I used until the installation of Norton Internet Security 2010) Windows defender was on, but not in real time.  Then, when I'd go to

The Task Manager > click on the Services tab > click on the Services button in the lower right

This will display a list of Services. I scroll down and find the Windows Defender Service

It shows NOT on and manual start

Before the instalation of Norton Internet Security 2010, it has shown as Started and startup type automatic

Is this the right setting with Norton Internet Security installed? I do not use Windows Defender, but I read that the Windows Defender Service is responsible for other things in addition to anti-spyware scanning.

So should I change the startup type?

    and start the service?

Or, as I said if I don't use it. leave it alone?

    Q. "Norton Internet Security 2010 automatically closes Windows Defender?"

    A. Yes.  It uses its own antispyware software.  Having two different types will result in conflicts and compatibility issues.
