Shadow copy service defective or not running

Windows Update has been trying for days (default) install downloaded updates. It turns out that the problem is failure to create due to the vss error restore point. tried manually from the service with the results of epic fail. y at - it a patch or mini install which could solve this problem or should I reinstall W7 everywhere?

Hi Gieto,

1. What is the error message when you try to start the service and the windows update error?

2. did you of recent changes on the computer?

Method 1

Disable the security software on the computer and try to install the updates and try to start the VSS service.

Disable the anti-virus software

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/disable-antivirus-software

Method 2

If the previous step fails then I suggest that scan you SFC on the computer that would be a system file corrupt on the computer search and replace.

The analysis may take some time, so be patient. Windows allows to fix corrupt or missing files it finds. If the information of the installation CD is required to fix the problem, you may be asked to insert your Windows Vista installation CD.

  • I can script volume shadow copy service files to copy VSS files to another server?

    Hello

Wanted to ask if it was possible to take the info created by VSS and move it to another server? The reason why I ask is that I need to information to a file on a backup server, copy it to another standby server and have it ready to go when the original bang goes machine!

While enjoying the fact than expected jobs work fine with the backup software and can copy the file backup due to another server as a :-) scheduled task I can't put automated restoration work to restore back this folder on a daily basis by using the backup of windows server or backup exec (very annoying!). I was wondering if I could create shadow copies of the file/volume concerned on the original server, and then have a script that has copied the files on the backup server?

Just in addition, the concerned files/folders are usually left "open" or "locked" (these include mdb files too!) so just using xcopy etc will not work :-(

Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome :-)

Thank you very much for your help

  • Windows 7: error 5 (access denied) when you try to start the Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) service

System: Win 7 Ultimate x 64 on a HP Pavilion DV6. My account is the user account only suitable on the laptop and an administrator account.

When you try to do a system restore, it came with an error that the Volume Shadow Copy Service did not work, even if this error code is not relevant for the purposes of this question later, I managed to run the system restore in SafeMode to an old restore point...

When you try to turn on VSS, I checked services.msc (which I ran as administrator) and VSS was off and on the manual. I tried clicking on start, the following error message came:

"Windows didn't start the Volume shadow copy on the Local computer service."
Error 5: access is denied. »

I then switched to automatic and tried again, same error. I tried since everything I can possibly think (including the definition of back and forth between manual & auto then trying the solutions below) to get the service starts, nothing helps. The solutions tried so far:

-net start vss high cmd - returns the same error (error 5 access is denied)
    -high vssvc.exe cmd - same
-changed the full control permissions for me, the group admin and NETWORK SERVICE (that I had to add) to the System32 folder and vssvc.exe but no change
-changed the permissions to full control for myself, admin and NETWORK SERVICE group (who even once, I must add) for VSS in regedit (open as administrator) still nothing
-even tried to restart explorer.exe a high cmd and a task manager high and again made the permissions - still nothing.

The only thing I haven't done is run a sfc scan, but tbh, I doubt that will fix anything. It also seems that VSS has been turned off for a while, as my last restore point was about 3 months ago and I installed things since.

Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated, because I'm going nuts with that now! Thank you!

The Volume Shadow Copy Service must not be on auto-start.

According to the site TechNet Microsoft VSS THAT was introduced with Windows XP SP1 and since that time it has always installed as manual start since he does not need to be started automatically and it works day and night to do nothing.  Some places say different times when VSS has been introduced, but be sure that it was a long time ago.

A popular site to see how Windows Services should / could be put in place is here:

    http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/

If you've read about VSS on Microsoft TechNet, it says:

    https://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh125927 (v = ws.10) .aspx

So do you think the MS TechNet site is fake and that each installation of Windows since XP has a badly installed VSS Service?  If that were the case all Windows systems in the world would be in trouble.

On an unafflicted system if you open the services applet and observe the VSS Service, it should look like this:

So if you start a backup operation or even create a Restore Point, go back to the Service applet and press F5 to refresh you'll see that the VSS Service changed its status to start:

Once the operation is complete the VSS Service will stop itself (it may take a while).

That's how it is supposed to work.

We should certainly be able to affect the automatic VSS Service and you should be able to start, but you shouldn't need to.  People who say that "solved their problem" forgets to mention the days/weeks to try things that lead to get their system of work.  There is no way of knowing which of the dozens of things that they could have tried really solved the problem.

You say that the system restore worked in Mode safe (but not a normal startup) and if it is true that means usually something to load in a normal trunk causing a problem and that something is usually an antivirus/antimalware application that is 'protect' your system against the changes.  When you start mode safe these things are usually not loaded this is why sometimes your system restore mode without failure.

Contributors known for these programs are Norton, McAfee, Avast, Avira, Kaspersky and probably others.

So what antivirus/antimalware programs you are running and have checked their support pages for known problems with backup/restore system restore?

Norton has even a page about these issues:

    https://support.Norton.com/SP/en/us/home/current/solutions/v51118464_EndUserProfile_en_us

Even McAfee told their product to uninstall completely before doing a system restore:

"Intel Security recommends that you remove McAfee security products before to proceed with an upgrade of the operating system or the Microsoft System Restore and then re-install your McAfee product when the update/restore is complete. "

So I assumed that whatever your AV program happens to be could be part of the issue here - but we don't know what it is.

We know error 5 is a permissions/access denied error type, but you shouldn't make adjustments to get VSS to start if something is wrong.  If as you have tried adjustments have been necessary every Windows system in the world should also make these adjustments and coming is not past.

Of course, now, your system might be more affected since you've been changing permissions on the things trying to VSS to start when there is probably not a problem with VSS in the first place, so who knows what condition are in now.

You could start by uninstalling what your AV software (most manufacturers have a special program for that) and by eliminating third-party applications that are known to interfere.  You can always reinstall them again later, no?

  • System Restore does not, component of volume shadow copy has encountered an unexpected error. 0 x 80042302

This has happened before and my OS began telling me that it was not authentic, even if it was. Comes with the system and I have the key... but Ibuypower (which ruined my computer TWICE when they were 'building' and I had to pay for sending him back so that they can fix their screws) did not send my software disc. I have corrected the problem before making a system, safe mode restore. It was caused by a Microsoft Update... and they wanted me to pay US $250 to fix it (more than the cost of the OS!) I want to fix the problem for good however and I'm tired of feeling like these ups live problems software and updates happen just so that people have to pay more money. Is there a fix REAL for that matter? Or maybe just do as most of the others are more and just get the OS from torrents for free? Since paying obviously has no benefits, he claims too. Sorry, won't be a tail... its just very frustrating when you are trying to do things the right way and you still get screwed.

    Hello

Were there any changes (hardware or software) to the computer before the show?

Method 1 : start the Volume Shadow Copy service and see if the problem persists.
a: Type services.msc in the start search box and click on enter.
b: Locate a service called instant cliché of Volume and then double-click it to open it.

  • Volume shadow copy error after moving to MSATA SSD on R7 - 572

A while back I cloned the value default 1 TB SATA drive on an MSATA SSD plugged into the slot unit MSATA.

At the time I had been unable to conceive the MSATA as boot drive, while the original (also bootable drive) was in the system such that it does not appear in the BIOS from startup list.

    http://community.Acer.com/T5/S-and-R-series-laptops/cloned-SSD-in-Boot-Manager-but-not-boot-priority...

As I did not need the 1 TB, I just removed and have used the system very well with just the MSATA SSD.

Today, I tried to make an Image of Windows backup system and ran a (below) Volume shadow copy error

Volume shadow copy service operation failed. (0x807800A1)

Writer has encountered a transient error... (0x800423F3)

I check all the main remedy online by ensuring that all VOlume shadow copy served are running, but without success. I feel that the fact that I'm on the SSD MSATA which was not visible in the list of the BIOS boot maybe being tied to the backup crashing.

Anyone running the R7-572 on the MSATA port that is able to make a system image backup?

    Thanks for your comments

It took me awhile, but I finally understood what was preventing the creation of the image of the system.

Looking at the event viewer, he had a lot of mistakes, the first mistake we a CAPI2 with event 513, then it was a VSS error with event ID 8228 stating an invalid character in an XML file.

    Error says:

Search through dozens of threads and try a number of bugs without success, I finally found one who mentioned their question came from bad characters in the names of partition after cloning with EaseUs Todo backup.

It's the tool that I used to clone my drive to a SSD, I decide to check it out.

The thread mentioned using GPT fdisk utility found on sourceforge, so I downloaded the tool.

You just run the executable in administrator mode. Find how to use it was a little hard, but basically the commands below does the job

0:-enabled disk 0, which is my drive.

I - to view the information on each partition

It will ask you the number. This allows you to see the names. Some of my partitions had some very strange names did not, we had a quote.

I checked what names when used on another laptop and decided to appoint mine as follows (I think you can use any name)

first 600 MB partion: database partition

Second partition of 300 MB: EFI system partition

Thrid 128 MB partion: Microsoft Reserved partition

    Fourth 205GB partition: partition database

Fifth 17 GB partition: partition recovery

To change the name of the partition, use the command

c ask for the number of the partition, then the name

    Then save with

w - written revisions and outputs

I rebooted, tried the system image backup and no problem this time.

I lost a full day on this topic, so I hope it can help someone else in the future

  • When I defragment I get message "suspended for the shadow copy of volume.

    Original title: Defrag problem

When I defragment I get message 'suspended for the shadow copy of volume' whatever that means?

The VSS Service should not be run unless you do some kind of a backup that uses it.

Are you using any kind of third-party backup software that would force the VSS Service to run all the time?

If defrag used to work, what do you think might have changed since the last time it worked correctly?

I have my VSS Service set to "Manual" - in this way, it not start with XP on a restart and run all day to do nothing, but he will start by itself when I do a backup and stop when the backup is complete (it runs when you need).

You check the VSS Service, click Start, run and enter in the box:

    services.msc

Click OK to open the Services applet and find the Volume Shadow Copy Service.

Select the status and Startup Type columns.

If you do not have a backup at this time there, the Status column must be empty (not started) and the Startup Type should be set to manual.

If this is not the case, let a right-click on the VSS Service, properties, Stop (to stop it), change the Startup Type to manual and OK your way out (ensure that it is reactivated by itself).  If it starts up again without a valid reason, you need to understand why and fix it.  Restart to make sure the changes 'stick '.

See if your defragmentation works when the VSS Service does not work...

I did what the other threads have said services and shall ensure that the shadow copy service and the service backup Windows are automatic and started but still nothing. I also ran a check with run with the/scannow command but nothing... I really need help everything would be appreciated.

    Hey kiran thanks a lot.

I talked to my uncle today who knows a little about the PC and he said that it maybe the tune up utilities that could be the problem. with some services that it turns off, it may have caused a problem. I uninstalled it but still nothing... so I watched your first suggestion that was the very audience who gave a more detailed error code. I then googled that error code that led me to believe that there is another service "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider (SWPRV)" which I had not enabled and once I did here! its market so now my message would simply be that you should be careful with programs that take control of the pc! Thank you very much!
