Shared vs datastore stores local data and DNS in 5.1

I read page 56 of the vSphere, ESXi, vCenter Server 5.1 Upgrade Guide

It addresses the issue of DNS load balancing and vCenter Server data store name.

I think it's to discuss the issue of shared storage and multiple hosts accessing a data store-same and that each host must VMware it the same name, due to how 5.1 doesn't solve VoIP DNS names, but now uses the DNS name for the data store.

I have no shared storage.  They are all my data store (3 now 3 guests) local.  I guess I have in no way the need to appoint all my local data stores the same.  Correct?

Here is the text directly from the page 56:

DNS load balancing solutions and vCenter Server Datastore Naming

vCenter Server 5.x uses different internal numbers for the storages of data than previous versions of vCenter Server. This

change affects the way you add NFS shared data warehouses to the hosts and can assign the vCenter Server updates

5.x.

names of host IP addresses versions before version 5.0 vCenter Server convert data store. For example, if you

mount a NFS data by the name \\nfs-datastore\folder, pre - 5.0 vCenter Server store versions convert the name

NFS-data store to an IP address like 10.23.121.25 before putting it away. The original name of nfs-data store is lost.

This conversion of hostnames to IP addresses a problem when using DNS load balancing solutions

with vCenter Server. Replicate data and appear as a single logical DNS load balancing solutions

data store. The load balancing occurs during the conversion to IP host datastore in solving the

host name to different IP addresses, depending on the load data store. This load balancing happens outside

vCenter Server and is implemented by the DNS server. In versions prior to version 5.0, features vCenter Server

like vMotion don't work with this DNS balancing solutions because the load balancing causes a

data store logic to appear that several data stores. vCenter Server fails to perform vMotion because he cannot

recognize that what it considers multiple data warehouses are actually a single logical datastore that is shared between

two hosts.

To fix this, versions of vCenter Server 5.0 and later do not convert names to IP addresses data store

When you add data warehouses. This measure of vCenter Server to recognize a store of data shared, but only if you add the

data store for each host in the same data store name. For example, vCenter Server does not recognize a data store

as shared between hosts in the following cases.

-The data store is added by hostname and IP address on host1 to host2.

-The data store is added by host name to host1 and host2 to hostname.vmware.com.

VCenter Server to recognize a shared data store you must add the store of data of the same name in each

host.

You have reason - the section relates to the NFS shared storage - with the same NFS server load balancing is multiple IP addresses - in older versions of vCenter as the name of the NFS server is converted into intellectual property that could be different that would cause problems with vMotion and other opt vCenter - with vCenter 5.1 NFS host name is maintained.

  • Need help with the data storage store, local array and network connections

Need help with my ESXi 4.1 installation

    My hardware:

I built a server with an Asus P6T whitebox, i7 920, 12 Gig RAM, NIC, Intel Pro1000 PT Quad, 3ware 9650SE-12ML with 8 1.5 TB SATA green in a raid 6 array gives me about 8 + TB with a spare drive all housed within a NORCO RPC-4220 4U Rackmount Server chassis.  I also have a 500 GB SATA drive which will hold the ESXi and virtual machines.

The network includes a firewall, Netgear Prosafe FVS336G, GS724Tv of Netgear ProSafe 24 port Gigabit Managed Switch on a dhcp cable modem internet service provider.

I also have 2 old NetGear SC101T NAS disks (4to) I want to connect to the system how some - at a later date have... data on them and want to transfer to the new storage array. I always looking into the question of whether they will work with ESXi 4.1, or I might have to only access it through Windows XP.

    My Situation:

I have already installed ESXi 4.1 and vsphere client with no problems and it is connected to a dhcp cable internet service.  I've set up host via a dynamic DNS service name give me a static hostname on the internet.  I installed three machines to virtual OS successfully at the moment and now want to first start by creating a multimedia storage server which will use some of this new 8 TB array, then separate data storage for use with a web server small overhead storage and a backup.  It is a domestic installation.

Help with the data store and network:

I was doing some reading, because I'm new to this, and it looks like I'll probably want to set up my table via ESXi as a nfs disk format.  Now, the data store is usually in another physical box from what I understand, but I put my readers and ESXi all in the same box.  I'm not sure that the best way to put in place with grouped network cards, but I want to make this work.

I understand that in ESXi 4.1 using iSCSi LUN must be less than 2 TB, but nfs - I should be able to add a bigger partition then 2 TB (for my multimedia) in nfs, right? or should I still add it separately as a separate 2 TB drives and then extend them to get the biggest space.

Any suggestions or direct resources showing examples on how to actually add some parts of the table as data warehouses separate nfs.  I know that to go to the configuration tab, and then select Add to storage, and then select nfs. I have not my picture, but it's here that I don't know what to do because ESXi 4.1 system already has an address, should I put the same thing to the new data store array also (will it work?), and what should I use for the name of the folder and the store of data... just do something to the top.  I thought to later install Openfiler (for a multimedia storage using this table server) as a virtual machine, use the table with esxi so that I can access the same storage space with widows and linux-based systems.

I also know I have to find a way to better use my quad nic card... put in place of virtual switches, grouping, etc HELP?

Any direction, assistance, similar facilities to sample, suggestions or resources that would help would be great. I did a lot of hunting, but still a little confused on how to best to put in place.

You must think of VMDK files of large databases with records of random size guest go read some data (a DLL or an INI file), maybe write some data back, then go read other data. Some files are tiny, but certain DLLs are several megabytes. It's random i/o all and heavy on the search time. IO Opsys is small random operations that are often sequential (go read data, write data, go read other data,...) so that deadlines are critical to the overall performance. That's why people say OPS are / s of reference and forget the MBs flow. The only time where you bulk transfers are when you read media (ISO files).

Well, now forget all this. Actually the disk activity will depend on the specific applications (database? mail server? machines compiler?), but the above is true for boots, and whenever applications are idle. You should see the profile to know.

RAID 10 is faster (and often more reliable) than RAID 5 or RAID-6 except in certain specific cases. In General RAID 10 is ideal for many random writes, since the calculation of parity for RAID-5 and - 6 adds to the overall latency between command and response - latency is cumulative if a little slow here and a little slow it adds up to a lot of overall slow synchronous especially with e/s on a network. OTOH RAID-5 and -6 can produce faster readings due to the number of heads, so you can use it for virtual machines that transfer bulk. Test. You may find that you need several different types subdashboards for best results.

You said 3ware, they have some good grades on their site, but don't believe it. With my 9650 that I found myself with only a couple of their recommendations-, I put the (simple) table for allocation size 256 k, nr_requests at 2 x the queue_depth and use the planner date limit. I had the habit for the Ext4 file system formatted with stride and stripe-width synced to the table and used the options large_files with fewer inodes (do not use the huge_files option unless you plan to have single VMDK files in the terabyte range). Use a cache of great reading in advance.

Virtual machines use VMDK files in all cases except raw iSCSI LUN that they treat native disks. VMDK is easier to manage - you can make a backup by copying the file, you can move it to a PC and load it into another flavour of VMware, etc. There could be some features iSCSI to your San as a transparent migration but nothing for me. NFS has less chatter of Protocol if latency lower times to complete an operation. NFS is good to read and write a block of data, that's all it boils down to.

UPS is good, but it won't help if something inside the machine explodes (UPS does nothing if the PC power supply goes down). If the RAID card has an option for a battery backup module, so it can contain some writings in memory and may end up the disk i/o after replacing the power supply. 3ware also limits the types of caching available if help is not installed, and you get just the right numbers with the module.

  • Error 0x80040E57 then store the date and time to the database

    Hello

I'm using Labview 2009 for storing the date & time of microsoft database but I get an error (0x80040E57), which specifies that the field is too small to accept the amount of data, I'm trying to enter. A screenshot of the error message and the VI is put in an attachment. Please suggest a solution for this.

    Thank you

    Guilhem

    Hi Marion,.

I looked a bit in question and found that the error occurs when one of your columns of database is too small to contain the data that you are trying to (see page 236 of this PDF). The data initially a problem is going to be one of the strings that you are trying to insert. I guess you circled in red is the origin of the problem.

I found a client who had a very similar problem. Here's how, he said, he has solved this problem:

I found the problem. The problem that you said was in the database. The "Date" column in the database table has been specified to enter 9 characters only. So when I ran the program on 12/02/2011 it ran for a week until 2011-12-09 23:59. So 2 to December 9, the total for the date format characters were 9 (if you add them) but as soon as the date changed to 12/10/2011 at 12:00 midnight the total number of characters were 10 (more than 9) and that's why he stopped at 23:59 on 09/12/2011. I changed the number of characters to 10 now and its working very well.

Then you can check your database to make sure that it is large enough to accept this entry.

    I hope this helps.

  • Kickstart: Local data store destroyed do not reinstall it

I noticed that when I reinstall ESXi 5 on a server already built, the previous local data store is not destroyed.

I said to make a 'install' and 'overwritevmfs '.

install - firstdisk = mptsas, local - overwritevmfs

in the upper part of the kickstart but the store of previous local data remains.

    I tried to use clearpart

    clearpart - alldrives - overwritevmfs

Yet the local data store of the previous generation, as well.

Part of my process of kickstart is to rename the store local data (datastore1) to a meaningful name that includes the hostname so if I reinstall, the data store rename fails (since there is no datastore1 on the 2nd install).  Also, I need to know the name of the data store, as I'm checking out the files ' / ' when installing (via oem.tgz) and move before the first reboot in the section post % (or they will be gone). The only persistent location is the local data store. This also effects kickstart for resettlement syslog that goes to the local data store as well.

  • Adding a date and time to create a channel in a data plugin

I would like to preface this question with the fact that I am new to VBS programming.  What I want to do is to create a plugin. Most of it is done, but I'm having a problem with the addition of two times to a.  I have a text file that stores the date and time separated by a tab character.  This file format was designed to excel.  When I bring him both the date and time are in different channels and I can not figure out a way to add both and either replace them or even place it in a separate variable.  Here is an example.

Chan (1) contains the date, Chan (2) contains both.  This statement, which places the data in the string is:

    The StandChannels value (0). Values (k) = Chan (1). Values (i)

    I tried:

    The StandChannels value (0). Values (k) = Chan (1). Values (i) + Chan (2). Values (i)

error: object doesn't support this property or method

    or

    Chan (1). Values (i) = Chan (1). Values (i) + Chan (2). Values (i)

error: object doesn't support this property or method

I tried several other iterations and have had no success.  This seems to be an easy task, Miss me probably something simple.

    Hi Eric,.

The first problem is that your datetime format string was wrong, you need to use:

    File.Formatter.TimeFormat = "MM/DD/YY SS.fff.

Or maybe if your year is first of all it must be:

    File.Formatter.TimeFormat = "YY/MM/DD SS.fff.

The second question was slippery.  The newsgroups (0) you throw combines the ProcessedChannel values correctly, but you were not successfully picking off those that you wanted to leave Chan (0).  I don't really know why the method you were using did not work, but I found a similar one that does.  Note that I've only changes part SUB New_File (file, ChanNames) of the code, not the SUB Previous_File (file, ChanNames) part of the code (got tired of typing).

  • Data store 'datastore1' is in conflict with a store of data that exists in the data center which has the same URL (.), but is back different physical storage

    Hello

I am new to vCenter Server, so you can assume that I'm missing something obvious.

I installed vCenter Server 5.5 and one of the two hosts of re-usable ESXi 5.0.0 connected correctly. When I try to connect to the second 5.0.0 ESXi host, I get the error message:

Data store 'datastore1' is in conflict with a store of data that exists in the data center which has the same URL (.), but is supported by different physical storage

I Googled it and found what I think are the best answers that are successful, but they all seem pretty unique in their situation (they have a cluster, I do not have) etc. Some solutions involve disconnecting the store of data and reconstruction of things. I would not make things worse and can live without doubt with the help of vSphere client (and not the web client) until maybe I can start again with a 5.5 installation to a new host once I have back up everything from the host unconnectable. I closed all the VM on the host of the second. I have put in maintenance mode. I've renamed the data store, all to nothing does not.

    Thanks in advance

The problem is that a whole army could not be connected to vCenter due to the problem, the solution involving disconnection of the host apply.

Here is how I solved the problem:

1 use the client vSphere client heavy, connect you to the host that cannot not be connected to vCenter Server.

    2. click on the host computer, and then click the Configuration tab.

    3. click on "storage".

    4. find the offending on the right data store.

    5. right click on the data store incriminated and click 'remove '.

    6. click on 'Add storage' in the top right.

    7. follow the steps to find this data not mounted store. I gave him a new name just to be sure, even if it's probably not necessary.

    Hiya,

I just started using powercli to configure my ESX Servers 4.1i.

Most of my script version works fine - but I can't rename the local data store.

I do a get-data store based on the name that works very well, I then pipe series-store data with a new name-, but it just seems to ignore the order and leave it with the old name.

    No error message is produced.

When you add a server ESX to vCenter, agent VirtualCenter (vpxa) service is installed on the ESX Server.

All actions you take in the vSphere ESX server customer or a PowerCLI script when you are connected to the vCenter, passed through this vpxa service. This service manages the resources on the ESX Server.

To avoid problems when you change some resources directly from the COS of ESX, vpxa services locks these resources.

That's why you can not change the datastorename when you are connected directly to an ESX Server that has been added to a vCenter.

BTW, if you connect a vSphere client directly to the ESX Server, you will see the same phenomena as what you see in your script PowerCLI.

If you need to change the datastorename locally on the ESX for some reason, you can try to remove the ESX Server with Remove-VMHost to vCenter, connect to the server with Connect-VIServer ESX, make your changes and add it to the vCenter with Add-VMHost.

  • Clone the virtual machine to the local data store

    Hi all

I'm looking to automate a task daily (or almost) of my friends with a small script with powercli.

I'm trying to "backup" or to clone a virtual machine, I work in a storage of one of our servers.

The servers are managed by a 5.1 vCenter and the machine is on a shared storage.

From time to time, I clean, stop the machine, remove all snapshots and clone the virtual machine to one of the local server as a backup storage. So I put together a small script which almost works. It works as long as the target data store is a shared storage, but not with a local storage.

I get always an error that claims it can not access the local data store and is not a permissions problem...

Given that I can accomplish this via the customer without problem I thought it is possible via powercli too, or I'm wrong?

Is it possible to manually move the virtual machine? Is it possible to define the data store used for the management of virtual machines somewhere?

    Concerning

    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,.

Take a look at VMware integrated OpenStack 1.0 Release Notes:

    • Installer gives priority to local storage by default
When you set up the data for the database stores three virtual machines, VMware OpenStack Setup integrated automatically gives priority to a local storage to improve IO performance. For resilience, users might prefer a shared storage, but the installer does not clear how to change this setting.
    • Workaround: Before completing the installation process, the installer of VMware OpenStack integrated allows you to examine and change the configuration. You can use this opportunity to change the configuration of the data to the database store three virtual machines.

If you have already installed VIO, AFAIR you should be able to manually move between data warehouses as long as you do not change VM itself.

Note that there is rule anti-affinite, so you may not be able to move that VM in the same data store when no other VIO - DB resides.

Another note is that if you turn off VIO-DB-0, mysql service will not appear automatically. you have to turn on manually by running "service mysql start" on the node itself, or run 'vioconfig start' of the SGD server.

    Best regards

  • Local data store has disappeared from the data store window (necessary emergency aid)

    Dear team,

I m facing a very strange problem, all of a sudden one of the local ESX datastore disappeared thereafter are full details we have encountered/noticed.

A local data store disappeared from the data store window.able to see this data store to add storage Wizard, which allows us to format the same.

    * If we take a session putty from here we can see and browse this store of data without problem.

    * Virtual computers that are running on this data store work as well (all files are accessible / VM is accessible on the network)

    * Unable to take backup image do error "the object has already been deleted or was not completely created.

    * Not able to take a «cannot complete the copy file... network» clone »

    concerning

    Mr. VMware

    Dear all,

We have enclosed a case at VMware, please find their findings on the same.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the webex session, we just had, I discovered the root cause of the problem reported to an underlying problem on the block device (the logical drive, or a problem on the Board) presented to accommodate the data in question store successfully.

In short, whenever we try to do raw reading from the disk (from sector 0), the same always fail when we reach the 30932992 bytes (31 MB) brand with an IO error (which is consistent, he is always on this region of the disc that read operations fail, no more, no less). This result can be seen, even if no partition is in the disk (using if = / dev/sdb instead of/dev/sdb1 with dd) and even after zeroing on all sectors (if dd \u003d/dev/zero of = / dev/sdb). Strangely, read operations work fine (as he writes zeros of random data) throughout the entire disk. Keep in mind that the tests I did with no VMware tools (I used almost only dd for these operations), which prohibits certainly a VMware problem (in fact, if you were to try to start the server with a Linux live CD and run the same tests that I did, you would see the same behavior).

I know that there is no report of material of any bad behavior on the table, but data collected with our tests today completely invalid who. The next step is for you to take this to the server provider to check for problems on the table or discs, because they are there and they are the reason for the problem you reported initially.

Please let me know if you have other questions about it.

    Thank you

  • Download a file from a local data store

    Hi all

I was wondering if it is possible to generate scripts downloading a file from a local data store on a Windows Server? Also, there are scripts available to perform such a task?

    Thank you

    Hello

Just guessed myself using the cmdlet copy-datastoreitem - good KB article here

After the connection to your vCenter server, connect to the data store and mount the source as a PSdrive data store, and then use the cmdlet.  It also works well download a data store and the downloading of a data store: just spent around objects in - point and - Destination.

At first glance, it seems that you need to know the source path of the data store.

    $dstore = get-datastore "YourDatastoreName"

New-PSDrive -location $dstore -name dStore -psprovider vimdatastore -root '\'

    copy-datastoreitem -item dStore:\VMFolder\VMConfig.vmx -Destination c:\SomeFolder\vmconfig.vmx
