Sharing of virtual machines and the NETWORK adapter settings

I usually have multiple NICs per physical machine, and I often map more than one NETWORK card in a virtual machine. This does all work well with 'regular' virtual machines and virtual network Editor. I use 10.0.1 on linux 64-bit Workstation.

As soon as I share a virtual machine, the NIC mappings cannot be changed in any useful way. I can spend only NAT, HostOnly and connected by a bridge in a ComboBox control, without the ability to select a specific vmnet. Although connections are bridged, they are displayed as NAT, which makes no sense at all...

What is the reason for this? I'm doing something wrong? If this is the intended behavior, it's shared VMs useless for me...

Kind regards

Thomas

I reinstalled VMware Workstation and now I understand what happened.

I need ever - and HostOnly-setting in NAT network, so the first thing I usually do after installing VMware is to remove them and fills vmnet0 to eth0 and eth1 to vmnet1. This works perfectly well with non-shared virtual machines.

For shared virtual computers, this mapping has been messed up somehow. Now it seems to work fine, I removed all the vmnets and has created vmnet10-> eth0 and vmnet11-> eth1.

If the problem is solved for me; but I can't say how the maps I screwed up. I certainly had two bridged devices, but has been shown only a single bridged device.

    Hello

    Not really...

    For an environment hosted... If you can access the console of the host, you can always access the console of the virtual machine regardless of the State of the network outside of the console. VMware Workstation, Fusion and server all fall into this category.

    For ESXi/ESX... you need a host outside to access the console of the virtual machine. ESX and ESXi not displayed graphics or VMs of their consoles and management devices. So, you need an external machine that can run the vSphere Client or access to the virtual machine via RDP, VNC according to Guest OS involved or SSH.

  • Dedicated network adapter to the virtual machine and the host computer not let can visit his profile

    OK, here's my question, I know how to give themselves a phyiscal nic to a vmware, but I wanted to take it one step further and do not leave the host send or receive data from this network card, only the virtual machine can use this network/NIC...

    Here's my reasoning, I have to network conections, one is for my internal/field network and the second is a direct connection to the internet (Comcast) I don't want to use to separate the machines have for internet connection, I want to be on the same machine phyiscal and have just the vmware machine talking to comcast... is it possible?  I am running VMware workstation 7, last update.

    Thank you

    Cdrshm

    I assume you are using a Windows host?

    If Yes...

    -first set up networking networking with vmnetcfg.exe

    -assign vmnet0 to the network card for the internal network

    -assign vmnet2 to the network card used for direct access to the internet

    -Right-click on the map network-icon in the systray and access the properties of the network adapter for vmnet2

    -Disable all other protocols and the Protocol of vmware_bridge for this network adapter

    result: a virtual machine that uses vmnet2 can directly access the internet and the host has no IP address for this network adapter - and therefore cannot use it.

  • List virtual machines and their DNS server settings

    I try to list virtual machines and their primary and secondary DNS server addresses.  Are the cmdlets in vmware that can do this, or would I need to use the invoke-script command.  I have the list of virtual machines and I want to list them all with their DNS server addresses.

    I tried to use the wmi objects such as:

    Win32_networkadapterconfiguration get-wmiobject - computername "servername |

    Select name, DNSServerSearchOrder

    It would give me the specific server name and addresses of dns.

    But I need the list of servernames which I would like to list some and their

    DNSserversearchorder settings (DNS settings)

    I tried to put the servernames list in a text file using

    Get - vm | Export-csv C:\computername.txt - notype

    Then I used the get-content command and the pipe in the get-wmiobject

    command like below:

    $servers = get-Content c:\computername.txt

    ForEach ($server in $servers)

    {get-wmiobject Win32_networkadapterconfiguration - computername $server

    | where {$_.} IPEnabled-fits 'True'} | Select-object

    name, DNSServerSearchOrder

    But when I run this command fails with errors such as a pipe empty

    element is not allowed.  I don't know if the above script has all synatx

    error or what is the best way to get a list of servers and their dns server

    Parameters.

    I know the wmiobject maybe out of this range in these newsgroups but there at - it a script in powershell, vmware or windows powershell to get a list of servername (which are mostly VMS) and their DNS server settings.

    Try the following script to get the DNS search order:

    Get-Content c:\computername.txt | `
    ForEach-Object {
      Get-WMIObject Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration -Computername $_ | `
        Where-Object {$_.IPEnabled -match "True"} | `
        Select-Object -property DNSHostName,DNSServerSearchOrder
    }

  • Doubts about cloning/migrating off the virtual machines on the network

    Hello

    I'm going to have some problems of connection while cloning/migration power VMs on different hosts on ESXi5 off. I don't know is this procedure for moving a VM off will use the vMotion network, or just the normal management. I have a lot of is speeds when copying VMs on several different hosts, so I wonder what I could do to make sure that the speeds are overfished? I have all the hosts that are connected on a gbit switch.

    Thank you!

    Yes, two links are used, even when you vMotion a single virtual machine. Here is an official KB article.

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=2007467

    A quick test (only VM vMotion) confirms this, as evidenced by the performance tables;

    Source (transmit - these two vmnic is used);

    Destination (receiving -serve two vmnic);

    See you soon,.

  • mix and match between vsphere 4.0 virtual machine and the hardware esxi 3.5 version run 4 on vsphere 4.

    If you run a virtual machine on vsphere and not upgrade the virtual hardware, this has it problems?

    My plan was to install on a server and then machines of vm, vsphere without upgrading the hardware on the machine to the virtual machine.

    So I can then migrate the machines on my esxi 3.5 server if necessary.

    Like many of you, I plan to update my test servers before upgrading my production servers.

    If you have 3.x hosts in your cluster, and then I'd wait for upgrade virtual hardware and your guests VMware tools until all your ESX hosts are on the same generation.

  • Problem with the mouse and the network after the upgrade VMware Tools and hardware to virtual machine

    Hello world...

    I just upgrade my ESX 3.5 servers to vSphere 4.1. All this work is very well with the upgrade right now.

    After that, I tried to mise a niveau of VMware Tools and hardware of VM for my virtual machine and the problems started.

    I tried with two different VM (the two Windows 2003) and the problem appears for the two VM.

    I don't want to test another VM of the different operating system now, I'm afraid to go too far with update of Pentecost the problem I have now.

    I tried two VM to be sure that the problem is not only on a virtual machine.

    First of all, the mouse.

    My mouse has jerky movement. The button works, but sometimes I have to click several times to select what I want.

    I tried to uninstall the mouse in Device Manager and reinstall, but not really Pentecost improvement which (buttons works better, but... not so sure).

    Second problem.

    After you restart the server after VMmware tools and hardware virtual machine, the network link not working anymore.

    When I go to my network card configuration, IP settings are reset in DHCP mode.

    If I go again all my IP settings, Windows says:

    The IP address is hidden from the network and Dial-up connections

    folder because it is not physically in the computer or is a riser

    It does not work. If the same address is assigned to both adapters and

    they become active, only one of them will use this address. This may result

    in the incorrect system configuration. You want to enter a different IP address

    address of this adapter in the list of IP addresses for this card in the list

    Advanced IP address in the dialog box

    If I answer Yes to this, I have to enter a new IP address, and of course, this is not what I want to do.

    If I don't answer, the network working again.

    I think it is a strange message but the work of the vSphere maybe network now.

    Anyone have any idea why my work network and mouse as this upgrade after.

    All other VM that is not upgraded so far works great.

    Thanks in advance...

    (1) make sure that your hardware acceleration is safe enough. I got the upgrade down my hardware acceleration several times already.

    (2) sounds like the new drivers for your NIC cards took over and VMware is basically a new card NETWORK for you. Follow these steps to disable it:

    (a) open a command prompt

    (b) type (without quotes): 'set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices = 1' and press ENTER.

    (c) type (without the quotes): "start devmgmt.msc"

  • No network on the virtual machine after the use of converter

    I was running a basic vm (WinXP) on an esxi4.1 host running short of disk space.

    So I ran the vCenter Converter Standalone client to copy the original VM on a new - the only thing that I changed the size of the disc thin provisioned avaiable.   The copy/convert seemed to work your.

    I started in the new virtual machine, and it came exactly as the old one (with the largest disk).

    ... but the network on the works of more than vm.

    I can still use vSphere to connect to the esxi server and bring up the VM console (which tells me that the network the server works very well).  When I look at the configuration of the virtual machine, it looks exactly like the old (complete with a network powered).   But on the virtual machine, I can't even ping the router, much less get to the dhcp server.

    I even went so far as to stop the virtual machine, remove the network card, restart the virtual machine (if the network has been removed from the virtual machine), stop the virtual machine again, add a NEW network adapter.

    Still the problem remains.  The virtual machine has a network card - but has no network.

    A few thoughts:

    You use a managed physical switch? If so, check if the MAC address of the VM is seen on one of the uplink ports.

    The network management and the virtual machine using the same IP subnet? You could probably try (if possible) is to create an another vSwitch and attach the XP VM to it to see if there is a problem with the virtual machine and the management on the same vSwitch network.

  • Get the IP of the virtual machine and MAC

    Hello

    I'm trying to get the IP of the virtual machine and the MAC one of my data centers.

    When I run that the following script two things happen:

    1. I don't see a vm in the output of the csv file.

    2. when I send the output to the quick PowrCLI I see only a mac and one IP address for virtual machines with network cards.

    Script

    ---------

    $MV = Get-Data Center $DC | Get-vmhost | Get - VM

    {foreach ($VM to $VMs)

    $VMx = get-view $VM.ID

    $HW = $VMx.guest.net

    foreach ($dev to $HW)

    {

    foreach ($ip in $dev.ipaddress)

    {

    $dev | Select

    @{Name = 'Name'; {Expression = {$vm.name}}.

    @{Name = 'IP address'; Expression is {$ip}},

    @{Name = 'MAC'; {Expression = {$dev.macaddress}} |

    Export-CSV VM - IP - Info.csv - NoTypeInfo

    }

    }

    }

    My console output, tested on a virtual machine with two external network cards and an internal interface "dummy".

    Name                               IP                                  MAC

    ----                                   --                                    ---

    VM1 192.168.2.1 00:50:56:xx:xx:xx

    VM1 192.x.x.xxx xx

    You see the addresses expected in summary using vSphere Client VM?

    Oh sorry, I forgot the PS 3.0 requirement.

    You can put all the entries in a table and export all at the end of the script.

  • Possible to suspend a virtual machine, and then disconnect the SAN?

    I decided to do an interview on a small environment ESX 3.5 and I was wondering if its possible to suspend a VM and then disconnnect the SAN to maintain SAN.  If I record data suspends storage local would this work? Is it more fast and stop the virtual machine and the power save?  There is the performance of 6 virtual machines on a single host with a single iSCSI SAN.

    was wondering if its possible to suspend a VM and then disconnnect the SAN to maintain SAN.

    A suspension is identical to a power off, it shows just the guest to Hibernate.  So yes, it is safe.

    Is it more fast and stop the virtual machine and the power save? There is the performance of 6 virtual machines on a single host with a single iSCSI SAN.

    No its not faster, its more fast and more reliable to power off the virtual machine rather than suspend.  If you need to follow the process and suspend its critical use, otherwise a scheduled interruption is better.

  • Size of Virtual Machine in the Finder is Double the size of virtual machine in Fusion

    I run a virtual disk of Windows 7 Home Premium to professional Fusion 5.0.2; the host operating system is 10.8.2. The sparse disk size is set to 40 GB. After the Windows defragmentation and cleanup of the virtual machine, Fusion 5 General preferences pane indicates the total size of the VM as 33.2 GB. I have not instant. The problem is that the size of the virtual machine, as shown in the Finder is 70,56 GB. My offsite backup drive is full and I'm trying to reduce the size of the backup set. How can I reduce the size of the virtual machine, as shown in the Finder to match the size of the virtual machine as shown in the merger? Thank you.

    According to the files in the folder and the newspapers, it seems that there is a problem with the (assumingly in October 2011) virtual machine and the virtual machine was back on the basic disk, making useless existing snapshot!

    What you can do - make sure that you have a full backup - is to properly close the virtual machine, and then move all files from snapshots (files hard with 00000 x in their file name) to another folder and power on the virtual machine again. If this works as expected you can delete obsolete files.

  • Recover a virtual machine or the host 'path '.

    I need to know full "path" to a virtual machine or host, as it appears in the display of 'Virtual Machines' and the models in the vSphere client.  Right now, my c# code uses recursion to browse and build each path individually.  For a large environment (500 + VMs) this process takes an extremely long time.  I know that recursion is the problem but I'm curious if anyone has found a way more effective way fundraising a virtual machine or host?  Thank you and I have provided a sample below to show what I want back.

    "Atlanta, development, Mike, MyVM01.

    • "Atlanta" is the data center

    • 'Development' is a folder under the data center 'Atlanta '.

    • 'Mike' is a folder under the folder 'development '.

    • "MyVM01" is the real display of virtual machine name.

    Take a look at this script: listVMByFolder.pl you can easily modify the script to change the way she came out of what you like.
