Spend RDM to VMFS using Storage vMotion

I have a server that is running Windows server 2003 SP2 Enterprise edition.

This server is using a SAN EVA8000 raw device mappings. We want to get rid of the device mappings gross and use instead a regular VMFS data store.

I tried to use storage vmotion to migrate the storage of a new vmfs datastore, hoping it would pass all the data from the mapping of raw device to a new VMFS datastore.

Completion of storage vmotion to the new data store, I still connected to the server raw device mappings.

It is still possible to migrate data on a raw device mapping to the data without downtime and manual filecopy vmfs store?

Is it possible to move from physical to virtual mode?

You can turn off the virtual machine, remove the diskette RDM and readd in virtual mode.

  • Is it possible to use Storage Vmotion with VMFS and RDM virtual tool?

    Hello!

You can use the tool Storage Vmotion to move a server that is running both VMFS disks and RDM virtual drives inside?

Both SAN is EMC and Vmware ESX and Virtual Center can be reached.

    Thank you!

For storage on the SAN again the two hosts will need access to the storage. You can then you copuld cold migrate the virtual computer. First, you will need to stop the virtual machine and delete the mapping of RDM. Once the virtual machine is the new data store re-create the mapping of RDM (Bothe hosts will need to access the LUN backend).

  • Storage vmotion to much to a vmfs

    Hello

I have a virtual server with 6 virtual drives in 4 different vmfs.

and want to migrate all records in 1 vmfs, but what happens to the names of disk if I use storage vmotion?

    At the moment I have 2 EX01_1.vmdk and 4 disknames EX01.vmdk.

Is storage vmotion ' "smart enough to rename the disks on the fly?

all disks will be renamed to match the subject name of VirtualCenter.  They will not bear the original name.  When you Storage vMotion, you rename the underlying files to match the name of object of vCenter.

  • Storage test 55 certification vmotion, storage vmotion fails with "Could not lock file" on the virtual machine during storage vmotion

In my view, that it is a known problem in ESXi 5.5 Update 2 release notes, someone knows a solution yet? This is an excerpt from the release notes:

    • Attempts to perform live storage vMotion of virtual machines with RDM disks can fail
Storage vMotion of virtual machines with RDM disks can fail and virtual machines can be considered in turned off of the State. Attempts to turn on the virtual machine fails with the following error:

      Cannot lock the file

      Workaround: No.

VMware support for the record said that the patch will update 3, it is known as an intermittent problem. Finally, it happened to me on the 9th attempt.

  • Please explain SVmotion (Storage Vmotion) and DRS for storage in simple words

Storage DRS is a feature that you allow warehouses of data aggregated on a single object (cluster) and recommend the implementation of disks in virtual machine based on the performance of the store of data and the available space on the data store.

The DRS storage uses Storage vMotion to migrate virtual (online) computers from a data store to another to balance data store performance and space.

You can use Storage vMotion without storage DRS too, moving virtual machine between clusters of DRS storage and warehouses of data even from the local level to the data store shared.

  • Storage vMotion in vCloud Director

    Hello

It is already possible to have a vm to a data store to another without interruption in service (storage vmotion ) with vCloud Director. If this isn't yet - it is planned to apply this? This isn't a feature for the Org Admin, but for the vCloud Admin, especially when - storage systems go to replace. And don't tell me to use a storage-virtualization product. Even those who should be replaced one day ;-)

That would be average cource, Org-Admin would see several data stores during the migration the vapps. One thing to consider is of course how manage fast-provioned vm. Consolidation is no real option, since the virtual machine must be turned off (unless the gui). And of course, it's a unique solution...

    Thank you

You should be able to use Storage vMotion directly * BUT * there * traps * you need to be aware of:

    (1) you * need * of storage vMotion virtual machine from this data store in your PvDC

    (2) If you use Fast provisioning (Linked Clones) the Storage vMotion, no he will not keep the format of the source, and * WILL * consolidate the virtual machine.

If you want to keep the disc format, use the vCloud API and the * move * call the API (it will take care of everything you need to keep it as a linked clone).

Note: I speak on 1.5.x, as you have profile storage & DTS 5.1, you can manage differently with DTS Maintenance mode >

    Hope this helps,

Welcome to the Forums - it depends on if you move storage networks - if you stay on the FC SAN FC will be used-

  • Try to migrate a virtual machine with storage vMotion

    Hello

When I try to migrate a virtual computer to another data store (using storage vmotion - change datastore option on migration Assistant) I still see this warning on the migration wizard: this virtual machine must be powered off to perform this function.

I'm completely lost, because I check the requirements to make a storage vmotion:

    1. license compliance: OK, we are authorized this feature

2 source and destination storage of data available on the host: OK

    3. no snapshots: OK

So, I do not understand why this message...

What can I do? (of course I can't turn off the virtual machine).

    Thanks in advance.

Which is my point... The message is related to the option greyed out only...

  • Storage VMotion over link FICU

    Hi all

Bear with me I'm just a geek of storage and vmware is not my specialty.

I'm looking for validation in a data center relocation project. We move data centers that are about 30 miles away. We have a few hundred VM that must be migrated to the new data center. The team has proposed the setting up of new ESX servers in the new data center and moving with Storage Vmotion virtual computer on a 10 GB FCIP link. Data reside on a Clariion system and will move to a CLARiiON and the FCIP link is between the Cisco MDS 9513 switches.

Now, I was under the impression that this kind of remote migration was still a work in progress Cisco and Vmware and there are strict boundaries between the centres of data using Storage VMotion.

Does anyone have an experience with this type of migration? Pitfalls? Everyone sees the problems?

    Thanks in advance

Well, it depends on if you need it to be supported or not

As long as a given ESX Server can see the source and target devices, he cares not if 1 of them is accessible via a FCIP link to the layer of switch - he cares that there is a target and a READ.  Once you can see the two device, storage vmotion will happen.  Now, with a link to 10 Gbps performance will probably be fine, you are likely to be limited by your CF 4 GB cards that link FCIP morel.

We have tried similar experiences, and it worked fine.

  • Storage VMotion and what it actually does?

    Hello

I recently started to use the VM to my new company and I am migrating various VM out of ESX host for them (level 4 of ESX 3.5 Patch) patch.

Now, I met my first VM installed on a local storage on an ESX host. I understand that I must use Storage VMotion to migrate this and that there is a plug-in that allows you to do so (SVMotion VI-Client Plugin). I also read the prerequisites for Storage VMotion Administrator's guide and I covered.

However, I do not entirely understand, what this process done. On an online resource that I found it says the following "However, with SVMotion the VM guest stays on the server it resides on but the Ramdisk that VM is what is happening."  Now, if I need to restart this ESX host is that this goes to the impact of this machine virtual comments?

I do not understand what this distinction between 'Comments' and 'VM virtual disk' would mean in terms of impact on the system for the service providing VMS.

    Notice to lovers?

    Tom

Storage VMotion allows you to migrate pwered VM transparently to end users. But you can always turn off the virtual machine and migrate to another data store.

  • ESX 4.0 Storage vMotion

I'm looking for a good doc or webenar on storage vMotion

Storage VMotion is integrated in VSphere if you are using the Evaluation Version or are licensed for use with the version of VSphere that you use.

To use Storage VMotion, right-click the virtual machine and choose migrate - if you have a license for Storage VMotion, and multiple LUNS which Storage VMotion can use then you should see the choice for host of change, change or change host and storage storage.

  • I can storage vMotion two popular VMS with shared disks?

I have an ESX 3.0.2 Server with local storage and two ESX 3.5 with fiber channel SAN servers. Two VM sharing disks and run it on the computer with only the local storage. Can I use storage vMotion to move these to a 3.5 servers and more at the SAN?

If not; can I migrate the servers (when closed) to the SAN and 3.5 servers without breaking the links on shared disks?

If you close the virtual machines and migrate them, you should be able to access the disks - as the sVmotion update pointers in the vmx file.

If you upsize and lose access to the disk, you will need to do is open the.vmx file for each virtual computer and update the path specified for each disc, not too hard to fix at all. -If you don't like that, you can simply remove and re-add the disc in the VM properties

  • Storage vMotion GUI in the roadmap - individual placement of discs?

I use storage vMotion the remote CLI much and I use almost exclusively the function to simply move some disks and leave some wherever they are. I saw the video demo of the user interface provided and it seemed to make a gesture of any disk group, just like the non-Plug-in support for Virtual Center did. Does anyone have knowledge of defining targett if different volumes of individual disk in the new GUI?

Yes, click on the Advanced button. Then you can choose the target for each disc.

  • Storage vmotion with several virtual disks

I have a couple of virtual machines with virtual disks on them.  I have a need to pass one of the virtual disks in a different lun while leaving others in the current location.  I would like to move this disk without impact on our users, which means that I like to keep the operational machine.  I did several Vmotions storage with great success.  I want to know is if there is a way to use Storage Vmotion and tell him to move only a single virtual disk on a multi VM disk.

Does anyone know if there is a way to do this?

    Thank you!

    Download and install the RCLI.

Run the sVMotion intereactive mode.  This will guide you through the process with the ability to move the individual disks.

    command line must start with
