Still take a lot of disk space

So I have been trying again for the first time and decided to try burning a DVD of it to test. I noticed that the video was transcoding I could see my free hard disk space becomes smaller and smaller. I thought that after I had finished, I deleted the reminder that he would free up space again, but which was not the case. I tried to burn another video on DVD to see if it would happen again, and he did. Basically, I went from 120 GB to 60GB free space.

After that a few DVDs were burned, I uninstalled it again with the hope it would free up space, but again, no luck.

So I'm about to reinstall it but I was just wondering if there is a way to reclaim any hard disk space, and if there is nothing, I can do to prevent this?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum.

When still transcode a project, there is voluminous, created in the media Cache files. Those that can be cleaned.

Good luck

I have several updates of microsoft for a few years. I am auto update, but all the old updates are still there. Is it necessary to keep or to delete to free up space. I get warnings that the computer is low on virtual memory.

original title: is it OK to remove the old windows updates as I have many of them taking place?

Virtual memory is used only when your physical memory has been exhausted.  This happens usually either when you have not restarted recently, or when you have too many programs running at the same time.  I suggest you reboot at least once a week and if it continues to happen, a purchase more RAM.

  • All of a sudden lots of disk space! Is this a virus?

I was using my computer today and all of a sudden a pop up came in the system tray informing of my hard drive is full! I was told one after the other, starting with my first then my other two additional discs.

I have 3 hard drives installed in my computer - A, B and C (primary) readers, I know a disc becomes full and I had to replace wit ha big disk, but B and C should have plenty of space on the computer's display, they don't seem to be complete, but the calculation of the consumed real space, a player is 880 GB of 931 , Player B is C 633 Go to drive and 1.37 TB of 1.81 to 1.31.  Windows claims all drives are full, even brought it to the top of the disk cleanup window. There are more than a terabyte of lack of free space!
While I checked around that Windows, I noticed several times the amount of free space in readers at the lowest of the changes still about 100 GB over the use of the real disk and at the top I claimed that it is full!

    Hello

This free program allows you to see what is taking place.

    http://www.Jam-software.com/treesize_free/

By default system restore also includes 15% of the capacity of your hard drive.

You can change the size of it:

    http://www.Vistax64.com/tutorials/76227-system-restore-disk-space.html

You can clean your hard drive using these two methods.

    "Delete files using Disk Cleanup"

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup

    Using the free CCleaner program:

    http://www.Piriform.com/CCleaner

In NO case use the registry cleaning Option in CCleaner

Download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware:

And Norton Backup can do strange things with filling of hard drive space.

    See you soon.

  • Defragmenter shows that I have a lot of disk space being taken up by a file that cannot be defragmented. I tried disk cleanup. I can't find this file to remove...

    The Defragmenter report is:
Fragments of files in file size that cannot be defragmented
    32 330 MB \Documents and Settings\Bill & LaVerne\Local Settings\Temp\~PST5291.tmp
I tried to find this file in order to remove it, but were unsuccessful.  I have the configuration of the computer to make the "hidden files" visible.  I searched all the temporary files by searching *.tmp and deleated all .tmp files that were more than 30 days old.  I searched files with one of the components of the file listed but am not successfulin find the listed file.
Why can't I find this file?

    Hi Steven,

I tried the program you recommended "Pagedefrag", but he did not find any fragmented junk files to be fixed.

However, I had another idea, I went into "the command prompt ", and progress through the file defragmentation report structure was first listed as the path of the fragmented files.  After clicking on "command prompt " in the program lists, I used an old DOS command line: cd (change directory ) (for each step ) and the following file type listed since the path of the defrag report file until I came to the temp indicated as fragmented file.  Then I typed del (space) and then pasted in the name of the file I wanted to delited "~ PST5291.tmp" and you press on [Enter] was deleted, and I was thrilled!

I delited the file in mode "command prompt " even if windows has not shown that there was!

Before I tried this, I got windows put in place a restore point in case where my new idea would cause a problem.

Oh, before I tried this, I also ran again disk cleanup and led also to search all *.tmp files.

Note: after you remove the ' ~ PST5291.tmp ' file, I ran again the defrag program with several additional fragmented files that cannot be defragmented reported!  When I deleted them... According to the above method, I managed to free up enough disk space change free space of 13% to 34% of free space on the C: drive.
    Quite impressive.
Can someone explain why windows program (search or windows explorer) cannot 'see' all these files and why 'disk cleanup' could not find and remove?  They took almost 10 GIG of space!

    Thank you

  • ORA-00257 - a lot of free disk space

I am trying to load approximately 14 GB of data, for a total of ~13.5 million records.
The raw data are on 14GBs, and the table space is set to 30GBs, its all text data.
The data are about 200 files of different site, ranging from 10 to 180 MBs.
It's test data (real) I use to try to optimize my indexes and others before you start using the table for actual reports.
A DBA, I am not able in databases and programming, I am, so please bare with me :)

My approach is to use sqlldr on an Oracle 10 DB to load data into a table records_load, and then use a procedure essentially do an insert in the selection of records (...) (...) of records_load, in the records_load deletion.

I've done a few sites one at a time, and they work fine, so I have 500,000 records in my table of records.
But when I try to transfer the 13,000,000 whole records in the table of loading using the SP, it ends by crashes.

If I connect to sqlplus to another window, I get
    ERROR:
ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only, until this just released.

HOWEVER, what I find online tells me that the disc is full.
Oracle is configured on a Windows Server, as follows:

    Total free walk
    Oracle-c (c :)) 50.0 go-go 39.3)
    Oracle-apps (e :)) 99.9 GO 91.2 GB)
    Oracle-logsA (f) 195 go-go 140
    Oracle-logsB (g) 83.5 83.3 go-go
    data-Oracle (h :)) 278 GO 150 GB)

I stumbled upon this problem on so Friday and ran:
    RMAN > delete expired backup;
and it "seemed" to solve the problem, which doesn't make much sense to me.

So, I changed my PC a little today, to use a cursor and loop through each site and make the
    «* loop * insert records (...)» "selection (...) from records_load * where site = cur_row.site *, to remove at records_load * where site = cur_row.site."

Now my db is blocked again, with a LOT of disk space.
I don't really know what to do and would appreciate any suggestions?

  • Outlook Express wants to save disk space by compressing the messeges, but I've never used. Why have my messeges?

I have Windows XP Pro and I use a hotmail account that is now Outlook.  I understand that.  I've never used Outlook Express.  When I turn on my computer, I get the message that save space disc can compress old files that it could take some time.  Even if they do not have my messeges, I would like to know how to uninstall it if it takes all of my disk space required on my old computer junkie.  I know that if I log in as an administrator, I can disable access to outlook express, but it is still in place?  This brings me to the question of the cleaning disc. In the cleaning disc, it says that compress files will not remove them.  Is that mean they cannot be deleted?  If this is the case, then will I not compress them?  Should I compress them before as I have remove access to Outlook Express as an administrator?  Thank you.

The prompt for Compact messages is indicated after 100 closures of OE. But as you use it, something else is causing the registry counter display the prompt. My guess is that you should look for Windows installed.

You must tell Windows Search to stop indexing OE.

In the control panel. Indexing Options. Change. Clear the check box for Outlook Express.

If you get the prompt again, let compact to reset the counter. It will not affect your Hotmail/Outlook account and messages. In addition, nothing is too much space. It's just a false alarm.

P.S. The removal of access keeps the prompt to appear.

  • Free disk space on the C partition

    Separated from this thread.

I am also having the same problem.  I am running Vista Home Premium SP2.  I was getting close to complete on my drive C (13% free space). I was shocked to see how quickly it filled up, almost as if he did it by himself.  I was downloading a lot so I had no idea how it happened.  I ran each program cleaning and each antivirus that I had to try to make room.  I cleaned up program files deleted a bunch of audio and video files, and it does not seem to do much more of a difference.  I shut down the computer for the night and is returned to him the next morning.  I ran and bought a few flash drives to transfer files more and when I booted up I checked the hard drive and it was back to 48% free space (as it was before).  I have no idea what happened, but so far, it seems to be fixed...?   one of the cleansers I ran also ccleaner.

    Compress files

There are two ways to compress files in windows. Zip files and built-in file compression. It's built-in file compression. For more information on compression type zip in Start - Help and Support .

Photos, music and video are already compressed. They can get larger if Windows tries to compress it any further. Also usually a bad idea to compress system files.

If you have files of worksheet they can very well be compressed. If you have files, installation files, they can also be good candidates. Web pages are also good candidates.

In Windows Explorer, blue file names means Tablet (it is the file system compression not aka zip files compressed files). Green filename means Encrypted.

To disable file names colored, in Explorer - Tools menu (Alt + T)- display tab and then clear the check box for Show encrypted or compressed NTFS in color .

Windows compression, encryption and security to work for the most part by applying attributes to a folder and the files in the folder inherit the folder.

If you have all the files appropriate for compression, find them in solution, made Explorer right click - Properties - general -Advanced button tab - Compress contents to save disk space. Choose to apply to all files and folders when asked.

To use a command line to compress the files in the Favorites folder.

  • Someone at - he heard talking about Windows 7 clean install on new discs, taking 63 GB of disk space?

It must be something simple, once figure you it out!  Have had 2 calls assisted support 2 days for a few minutes each.  Guy does not seem to have a clue.

anyway... short as possible...  I built a new computer game. 3 hard drives SSD crucial m4, 1 x 128 GB, 2 x 256GB and 2 TB WD SATA III for storage.

You want to put Windows and Office, Antivirus etc. on the 128GB SSD... all games and programs on the two 256 GB SSD drives.  Requirements, I see it everywhere, including on the box... 20 GB for 64 - Bit.

I did a clean install Windows 7 home 3 times and then switch to Win7 Pro using a card key to upgrade time everything.  Fact a facility with everything configured as it was planned.  Made an installation with only the 128GB drive connected.  The two ways... Windows supports 63 GB of space when you go to 'My computer' and watch the free space.  STILL... If you go on the Windows disc and open and select all folders, files etc... including the hidden files/folders... you get a total of about 25 GB disk!  Exactly as you might expect.

Contacted Microsoft through chat... support person called... He repeated that everything I said I already tried and I even gave the data, figures and results, etc. no help.  Then he had me download an iso file and burn a bootable DVD with Windows 7 Pro on this subject.

Tried and same results.  SO now, I installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on 2 different Crucial Solid State Drives and a Western Digital 1 TB SATA drive.

Each installation takes 63 GB of disk space in 'My Computer'.

Each installation... When you navigate to the drive and open and select all the files and click right properties... get you about 25 GB of space occupied by the files.

Run a CHKDSK scan and it will show also the 63 GB or more space used.

Have already removed all the shadow copies, deleted all temporary files, ran CCleaner and got rid of everything. Delete the backups or restore points.  Makes no difference.

I have install Windows and in 'My Computer', it shows that 63 GB is used.  And it is above all of the windows updated hundred occur after installtion.  Nothing else was installed.

Any ideas?  I can put Windows on a 128 GB SSD, which only shows GB total 119 in 'My Computer' in the first instance.  After all the windows updates and virus and MS Office program, it would be complete and have no space to work.

The point is... Windows should only be taking up about 25 GB... May 30 when it is updated and corrected.

    Finally I thought of her.

When windows is installed into hibernation is enabled... No matter what you see in equipment/control panel and power sound/Options/change Plan / change advanced power settings.  Hibernation settings and parameters of sleep can show as disabled in the advanced but you will ALWAYS have a file called "Hiberfil" at the root of the C drive and it will be or has been on my system... 24 GB in size.

You will have to view all the files/folders to view this file.

24 GB windows put side also used space for modes of hibernation / sleep.  24GO of Wasted space!

I have also 32 GB of system memory.  When you install windows by default... it sets the page file/Virtual memory size in the same amount of memory you have installed.  In my case a little more than 32 GB was my page file size.

IF you have windows which takes about 12 GB installation, 1 without updates.

For more, 24GO Hibernation and 32 GB of page file.

So, when you look at 'My Computer' after a clean and no installation update again... Windows takes 12 + 24 + 32 GB = 69 GB... 69GB for a windows installation!  And the hard drive is only considered GB 119.  Once you do all the 'windows updates' installation will be more several GB.

So my 119GB SSD drive will be 75% or more complete just after installing windows.

SOLUTION: To get rid from where to disable Hibernation and recover 24 GB of disk space... go to start > programs > Accessories and right click on command prompt and select "run as Administrator".

This executes the function of the command mode prompt "high command prompt".

Your command prompt window should read as C:\Windows\System32 in mode "high".

If your window to prompt similar to C:\Users\Tony bed... then you are not in high mode.

Type the following in the command prompt window to disable the hibernation: powercfg-h off and press ENTER.

There is a space after the 'g' powercfg and also a space between the '-h' and the word 'off '.

The "Hiberfil" file in your root of C will have now disappeared and wah - Los Angeles... you 24GO more free space on your drive currently.

"#2 SOLUTION: right-click on"My computer"and select properties.  In the window that opens on the left column, click on "Advanced System Settings".  The window that opens will be the "Advanced" tab  Click settings in the performance section of this tab. In the window that opens this time again click the "Advanced" tab  Down under "Virtual memory" click on the "Edit" button to change your virtual memory settings.

In my case, I stopped windows manage the virtual memory and changed the setting from the window of 32 GB virtual memory size, because I have 32 GB of installed system memory... I reduced my virtual memory to 8 GB which is always a huge!

But in doing so, I got another 24 GB of disc space given my size virtual memory 8 GB value.

So now, once you do both of these actions, you can go into 'My computer' and you see that now only have on (my) 20 GB of space is used instead of the original GB 68 to 69 of the space used.

So now I have just to 98 GB of free space on a disk Go 119... with the installation of windows occupying about 20 to 25 GB of space that you want to see normally.

Before... I had about 45 GB of free space (after update).

Auto power OFF after put into hibernation and make sure that you do not have an ungodly amount of virtual memory reserved for the use of windows!

  • Calculation of resources LM disk space

I'll put up a configuration of demo with about 300 GB of 10 servers. I want more people to use at the same time. If I have 3 users connect to LM at the same time and they deploy this configuration in their work space, will it take 900 GB of space if users are deploying all their macines? Each configuration will take up to 300 GB? Or LM records changes? Is there a documentation on that? Thank you!

3 x 300 GB machines will take up to 48 MB of space per copy initially and then grow in size as are written by blocks.  Its a statement of changes based on block by block, called "copy on write" (COW).

    More info below...

    Disks of COW

COW disks are the disk layout behind REDO logs, instant, linked clones and almost every computer created by the Lab Manager virtual.  These are files that represent a full disk by referencing a basic disk instead of copy it.  The disc of COW begins as a file (16 MB) empty and captures all the entries in the instance it represents in a sparse format.  Read both the disc of COW and underlying basic disks, you get the equivalent of a new instance of disk.

A multitude of disks of COW can refer to the same basic disk to create multiple copies of this disc. COW drives can also be built out of other disks of COW, so the eventual structure in laboratory Manager looks like a tree of disks, which the internal nodes are shared.

Lab Manager limit the tree to a depth of 30, and there is no limit to the width of the tree. Lab Manager also ensures that all internal nodes are read-only at the application level, and that leaves nodes are the only nodes in the tree that can be "run" so that we do not destroy the dependent disks of COW. As VMs are removed in the application, a background process asynchrously Lab Manager deletes nodes in the tree he can without affecting dependent disks of COW.

When the disks of COW are used, their data structures pick up of ESX (the "pile of COW") kernel memory. The pile of COW is 40 MB in ESX 3.0 and up to 192 MB on ESX 3.5 u4.  Most of the COW lot is taken over by "inputs of root" which use 4 bytes from the heap of COW for each 2MB of disk, represented by disks of COW.  The result is that we can only open disks of COW representing a sum of 20 TB (40 MB / 4 b * 2 MB) of the base on each ESX Server disk.  This includes all nodes of a chain of disks of COW, so if you deploy virtual machines, with a string of 10 deep drives built COW out of 250 GB basic disks, you can open only 8 of these virtual machines before you run out of heap of COW.

Performance of the disks of COW

The impact on the performance of the disks of COW is complex, with hits of peformance and potential gains.  There will be a small performance hit start during the caching of metadata, degradation of performance during certain i/o operations and potential performance gains to the storage array cache.

Metadata cached in memory to start the virtual machine describes the sparse structure of the COW drive - which hit to get the data from the file. Given that these metadata can become quite large, caching only a part of it.  When a virtual machine is a virtual SCSI read and we reached the metadata cache, each virtual reading will result in a single physical reading.  If we have a lack of cache, however, we first must make a metadata read before making the actual data read. Therefore, we can do more than a physical read by virtual reading if a virtual machine is reading from a variety of sectors of the disk.

Another potential impact on the performance of the disks of COW is blocking during writing SCSI. Rare disks of COW will develop as the data is written to the disk (in segments of 16 MB), and files should be locked as they are grown.  This does not work with ESX virtual machines with a monolithic basic disk. The impact will be more apparent during continuous written causing the COW drives to grow rapidly.  In practice this was not a major issue in the facilities of Lab Manager.

There are potential performance benefits to using disks of COW because of the caching of the storage array. Storage arrays cache files commonly used in memory, and when you use disks of COW, and commonly used and to share COW records can be read from memory and no disk.  Director of the laboratory is a use case that can take much of this advantage.

    Maintenance of records of COW

Basic direction is to not worry the length of chain linked clone until it is close to the limit of the System Lab Manager of 30. Directors must ensure that they keep enough available disk space on their berries to consolidate records when they get close to this limit.

    Borderline cases

There are cases where the length of chain linked clone must be controlled:

Large capacity disks base & long strings: each ESX 3.5 u4 server can support only disks of COW representing 96 TB of disk Basic.  If your basic disks are large (100s of Go), you can control the length of chain drive of COW to stay away from this limit.  Lab Manager understands the limits of COW ESX and act appropriately limits are reached.

Wholesale writes: for use cases that make large writes to disk (loads of large databases, application installs, etc.), the advantage of related clones Compact is reduced to the minimum. In these cases the previous consolidation can save a considerable amount of disk space. If you can design processes such as major Scriptures are made once and everybody down copies of the result, you will save a lot of disk space.

  • Help return to iPhoto + delete Photos library to recover disk space

When the Photos were initially introduced, I didn't know what I would get in when I just clicked "convert to Photos" or whatever the wording was.

A week in the new application I realized that it wasn't for me (lack of some key tools like iPhoto), so just started using iPhoto again instead

-but only now I realize the new Photos app seems to be "hogging" lots of disk space:

When I look under the images, I see my iPhotos current library clocking in at about 64GM.

While the Photos library clocks (now are more used) in a 66GB even higher.

My question: How do I clear all (assuming that duplicate) photos in Photos and get much needed storage space of hard drive?

Is it save to just delete the folder from the library of Photos in my pictures folder or I have to delete all the photos in the Photos app?

If you don't use Photos and has no pictures in you need to trash just the photo library - it will not save a lot of space because of the hard links that are used, but if you use any Photos, then there is no reason to keep the library autour and when you are ready to migrate again (you will need since iPhoto is not supported and an upgrade it) break)

  • Error (disk space low volume C) can anyone HELP?

Hello world! Earlier when I had a problem with virus/malware, I chose to reinstall the operating system from the original installation disc. I use the version of windows 7 Home premium 64-bit with 4 GB of internal memory with a SATA 320 hard drive, with I think, 3 volumes partitioned space. When I was prompted to install the disk volume. I chose a different location from the location of the original of the operating systems (for fear of more write the original location of Windows OS.) Now I get a (disk space low on volume C erorr).      I now have two copies of the WINDOWS operating system on my startup directory, but I need one! So far, I tried disk cleanup and created a new partion Volume "A".            RESULTS > nothing changed, still in train (error-Low disk space Volume 'C').  Can someone help, please?

Thank you for your valuable time into consideration my request:

    Hello!

The tools that I have recommended to you are very small size (up to 1 MB set).

You can safely remove the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch content to free up a few megabytes.

The prefetch folder contains details of caching of frequently used programs and startup applications.

With this .pf files, Windows can improve the performance of applications.

The .pf files are re-created when the applications were revived.

  • ESXi disk space, vms stops

Hello friends, please let me go throw a hand.
I have a client who has a VMware ESXi 4.0 running on an IBM server, there a few daysago server has stopped working due to lack of disk space, so IT techniciansbecause the company has made several unnecessary shots. I'm here, delete thesnapshots and same VMDK and other invalid files, released 30 GB, but now the serverreturned to lose ground and has now only 12 MB of free disk space. How can thishappen? What makes a server loses a lot of disk space so quickly?
Thus, virtual machines are stopped, the server crashed Vmware everything I do, how free space without losing data?

    Thank you
