Calculation of resources LM disk space

I'll put up a configuration of demo with about 300 GB of 10 servers. I want more people to use at the same time. If I have 3 users connect to LM at the same time and they deploy this configuration in their work space, will it take 900 GB of space if users are deploying all their macines? Each configuration will take up to 300 GB? Or LM records changes? Is there a documentation on that? Thank you!

3 x 300 GB machines will take up to 48 MB of space per copy initially and then grow in size as are written by blocks.  Its a statement of changes based on block by block, called "copy on write" (COW).

More info below...

Disks of COW

COW disks are the disk layout behind REDO logs, instant, linked clones and almost every computer created by the Lab Manager virtual.  These are files that represent a full disk by referencing a basic disk instead of copy it.  The disc of COW begins as a file (16 MB) empty and captures all the entries in the instance it represents in a sparse format.  Read both the disc of COW and underlying basic disks, you get the equivalent of a new instance of disk.

A multitude of disks of COW can refer to the same basic disk to create multiple copies of this disc. COW drives can also be built out of other disks of COW, so the eventual structure in laboratory Manager looks like a tree of disks, which the internal nodes are shared.

Lab Manager limit the tree to a depth of 30, and there is no limit to the width of the tree. Lab Manager also ensures that all internal nodes are read-only at the application level, and that leaves nodes are the only nodes in the tree that can be "run" so that we do not destroy the dependent disks of COW. As VMs are removed in the application, a background process asynchrously Lab Manager deletes nodes in the tree he can without affecting dependent disks of COW.

When the disks of COW are used, their data structures pick up of ESX (the "pile of COW") kernel memory. The pile of COW is 40 MB in ESX 3.0 and up to 192 MB on ESX 3.5 u4.  Most of the COW lot is taken over by "inputs of root" which use 4 bytes from the heap of COW for each 2MB of disk, represented by disks of COW.  The result is that we can only open disks of COW representing a sum of 20 TB (40 MB / 4 b * 2 MB) of the base on each ESX Server disk.  This includes all nodes of a chain of disks of COW, so if you deploy virtual machines, with a string of 10 deep drives built COW out of 250 GB basic disks, you can open only 8 of these virtual machines before you run out of heap of COW.

Performance of the disks of COW

The impact on the performance of the disks of COW is complex, with hits of peformance and potential gains.  There will be a small performance hit start during the caching of metadata, degradation of performance during certain i/o operations and potential performance gains to the storage array cache.

Metadata cached in memory to start the virtual machine describes the sparse structure of the COW drive - which hit to get the data from the file. Given that these metadata can become quite large, caching only a part of it.  When a virtual machine is a virtual SCSI read and we reached the metadata cache, each virtual reading will result in a single physical reading.  If we have a lack of cache, however, we first must make a metadata read before making the actual data read. Therefore, we can do more than a physical read by virtual reading if a virtual machine is reading from a variety of sectors of the disk.

Another potential impact on the performance of the disks of COW is blocking during writing SCSI. Rare disks of COW will develop as the data is written to the disk (in segments of 16 MB), and files should be locked as they are grown.  This does not work with ESX virtual machines with a monolithic basic disk. The impact will be more apparent during continuous written causing the COW drives to grow rapidly.  In practice this was not a major issue in the facilities of Lab Manager.

There are potential performance benefits to using disks of COW because of the caching of the storage array. Storage arrays cache files commonly used in memory, and when you use disks of COW, and commonly used and to share COW records can be read from memory and no disk.  Director of the laboratory is a use case that can take much of this advantage.

Maintenance of records of COW

Basic direction is to not worry the length of chain linked clone until it is close to the limit of the System Lab Manager of 30. Directors must ensure that they keep enough available disk space on their berries to consolidate records when they get close to this limit.

Borderline cases

There are cases where the length of chain linked clone must be controlled:

Large capacity disks base & long strings: each ESX 3.5 u4 server can support only disks of COW representing 96 TB of disk Basic.  If your basic disks are large (100s of Go), you can control the length of chain drive of COW to stay away from this limit.  Lab Manager understands the limits of COW ESX and act appropriately limits are reached.

Wholesale writes: for use cases that make large writes to disk (loads of large databases, application installs, etc.), the advantage of related clones Compact is reduced to the minimum. In these cases the previous consolidation can save a considerable amount of disk space. If you can design processes such as major Scriptures are made once and everybody down copies of the result, you will save a lot of disk space.

Is it safe to defragment with low disk space?

    Hello

I also see your message here. Please continue posting in the same thread.

A volume must have at least 15% free space for disk defragmentation Defragment completely and properly. Disk Defragmenter uses this space as a sorting for the fragments of files box. If a volume has less than 15% free space, Disk Defragmenter defragment only partially. To increase the free space on a volume, remove unnecessary files or move them to another disk.

I have 3 hard drives installed in my computer - A, B and C (primary) readers, I know a disc becomes full and I had to replace wit ha big disk, but B and C should have plenty of space on the computer's display, they don't seem to be complete, but the calculation of the consumed real space, a player is 880 GB of 931 , Player B is C 633 Go to drive and 1.37 TB of 1.81 to 1.31.  Windows claims all drives are full, even brought it to the top of the disk cleanup window. There are more than a terabyte of lack of free space!

  • Free disk space on the C partition

    Separated from this thread.

I am also having the same problem.  I am running Vista Home Premium SP2.  I was getting close to complete on my drive C (13% free space). I was shocked to see how quickly it filled up, almost as if he did it by himself.  I was downloading a lot so I had no idea how it happened.  I ran each program cleaning and each antivirus that I had to try to make room.  I cleaned up program files deleted a bunch of audio and video files, and it does not seem to do much more of a difference.  I shut down the computer for the night and is returned to him the next morning.  I ran and bought a few flash drives to transfer files more and when I booted up I checked the hard drive and it was back to 48% free space (as it was before).  I have no idea what happened, but so far, it seems to be fixed...?   one of the cleansers I ran also ccleaner.

Check the size of the swap file

As a rule generally you want to your swap file slightly larger than the amount of memory that you have. It develops automatically but spread automatically. If you use hungery memory programs as this video editing should be bigger. If too big you can reduce and rush of space can be moved to another drive.

    Compress files

There are two ways to compress files in windows. Zip files and built-in file compression. It's built-in file compression. For more information on compression type zip in Start - Help and Support .

Photos, music and video are already compressed. They can get larger if Windows tries to compress it any further. Also usually a bad idea to compress system files.

If you have files of worksheet they can very well be compressed. If you have files, installation files, they can also be good candidates. Web pages are also good candidates.

In Windows Explorer, blue file names means Tablet (it is the file system compression not aka zip files compressed files). Green filename means Encrypted.

To disable file names colored, in Explorer - Tools menu (Alt + T)- display tab and then clear the check box for Show encrypted or compressed NTFS in color .

Windows compression, encryption and security to work for the most part by applying attributes to a folder and the files in the folder inherit the folder.

If you have all the files appropriate for compression, find them in solution, made Explorer right click - Properties - general -Advanced button tab - Compress contents to save disk space. Choose to apply to all files and folders when asked.

  • Windows Movie Maker 6.0 error during recording: check if the original sources are still available, the saving location is available and if there is enough disk space

Original title: Windows Movie Maker 6.0 Save Bug?

Something's weird with Windows Movie Maker...

It cannot record movies, I create somehow.

Immediamente when it starts to save, it gives an error signal: check if the original sources are always available (and yet, they all), there is no such thing as the save location (of course it is!) and if there is enough disk space (a lot of). Still, it will not save. How can this be possible?

I use an mp3 file (pendulum - watercolor) and have a lot of footage, often used with effects. They are 1280 x 1024 and a .avi file. Everything should work fine, but still does not work. Help me!

  • What will happen to my PC, if disk space is exhausted?

    Hello

I have a PC running Win XP (Pro), with a full suite of Norton Internet Security and MS Office 2007.

Disk space is 20 GB. At the present time, the used space is only 4.95 GB.

I noticed that the window and Norton updates take more space as time passes.

Can I know what that will become of my PC if the 20 GB hard drive is completely exhausted?

If I do not upgrade to a 350GB or higher drives, the PC will not usable again?

    Thank you

    Low

This looks like an old PC. 20 GB hard drives (HDD) are very old in terms of PC.
Yes, get a bigger HARD drive, but you will get the best value for money with a 500GB vs 320GB (about $10 more).
When you are sure to get a HARD drive with a speed of 7200 RPM and a 16 MB cache.
'Green' HARD disk is slower (about 5400 RPM) and more suited for storage.
Hitachi, Western Digital and Seagate are good brands.

You have an option when you install a new HARD drive to install clean Windows, or you can use a program like Acronis True Image to copy your current installation of Windows to the new HARD drive.
The link below is a free trial version
    http://www.Acronis.com/homecomputing/products/TrueImage/
There is also a free version of Western Digital that I used. In my opinion, it works with other brands like I just made an image of Win7 from a WD HARD drive to an SSD Crucial (disk solid state drive).
    http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?Swid=119

In fact, not go to more than 85% of its capacity or you cannot run Disk Defragmenter.
Norton is known for wasting system resources. Try Microsoft Security Essentials if it works on XP. It's free and as good as expensive AV Avast Home is another free AV which I used for nearly ten years.

  • Snapshot Consolidation with a low disk space options

After you delete all snapshots for a specific virtual machine, I am alerted that drives require codification, probably because it has insufficient disk space to successfully delete the snapshots. Of course, consolidation fails because of lack of space. I wonder if there are tricks to be able to consolidate records when the data store does not have enough space. So far I came up with the following options, but some are not ideal, I am looking for other suggestions:

-Increase the size of the data store: not ideal because the data store will have more than enough space once the snapshots are deleted and it is difficult to decrease after the fact.

-Storage vmotion the disks in another larger data temporarily store: a little better but not ideal due to the large amount of data

-Stop the virtual machine and try to consolidate: I read that additional disk space is needed to consolidate the disk while the VM is running. If this is the case, how can I be sure that it works, for example to calculate the required space before I incur the failure (see below for more information).

For each of these options, I am also looking for assistance calculating the space needed to consolidate properly, given the following information (let me know if further info is needed):

    2015-03-06 11_05_03-vSphere Web Client.png

    2015-03-06 11_06_53-mRemoteNG - confCons.xml.png

According to the information provided, it seems that you use thin configured virtual disks. In this case the additional disk space required to consolidate snapshots could be anything up to the size/amount of snapshots, limited by the provisions of the virtual disk size less the current size of the hard file. If you consolidate snapshots, while the virtual machine is up and running, with the disk space required on the data store based on the changes made in the guest OS, while the Helper-Snapshot is active. Unfortunately, there is no available for this formula.

  • Recover disk space

    Hello everyone,

I am all new to this community and very happy to be here.

I just started a new job looking after a new IT infrastructure, my experience has been Hyper-V, but now I'm looking after a 5.1 ESXi VMWare environment. So far I'm in love, then its great together!

I've been after help, we have a virtual machine that has 4 VHD thin provisioned, HD1 (disk0 in the server disk management) currently only has 1 TB of unallocated space that is there is no active partition assigned to this area of space. My question is: what is the best practice to deduct all or maybe some of this space back so I can supply more VM.

I have done some calculations and I have more than enough space on the server with the TB unallocated so that the space is really just wasted already.

I can't wait to receive some answers and responses.

    Thank you very much

    Lee

As you can see, the first virtual disk ' CDI-coFW - SQL.vmdk ' occupies ~ 115 GB of physical disk space, which is very probably the space required by the 3 active partitions. It is certainly possible to use e.g. the converter to get rid of the empty partition, but it's probably more than release of disk space for internal purposes. I probably wouldn't change anyting, except that I had a lot of free time.

I use creative cloud in order to download the trial of Photoshop on my pc but this error:-Instillation failed. Not enough disk space. Please free up space on C and try again (-30)

I entered the settings of cloud and told to download for my largest drive E (which it fine for lightroom) but it only downloads on drive C (small disk almost full) for Photoshop. I missed something or is this a bug?

    Thanks in advance

Shared resources and temporary files will be stored on your primary drive.  If a lack of disk space prevents installation then make sure you have enough space on the main drive for temporary files and installation files extracted to be placed.

  • Disk space remaining time 0 days... but what VMs.

    Hi all.

I installed the VAPP for VCOPS is about 2 weeks and continues through he's trying to learn it.

I was looking at the warnings and try to get health upward.   Most of the things are clickable, but for that I can't figure out what/where to go.

If I highlight something on the left (my vCenter for me), then go to the planning on the right, then the views.

I find a lot of things RED.  For example, if I choose 'Ability to Virtual Machine', then down I see next to "Disk space" that I have the time that remains "0 days."

Also that 27 of my virtual machines are more.   I can't figure out how to find just what VMs that is.

I have attached a screenshot showing the screen page.

    5.7.1 vCops build 1166139

    Thank you very much.

If you use the admin account from vCenter for the collector of vCOps, perms are probably not a problem here. vCenter creds are used only to collect data from vCenter, and to access user acts as a degree of transmission for advanced access to the USER interface. Whatever it is, I don't think it's an immediate question since you are using your administrator account.

    1. instant space on a virtual computer will count just use of disk space. After a certain age it is even considered as a waste (configurable, default 180 days).

    2. who would absolutely have an impact on the accuracy of what vCOps sees. vCOps needs to see all the virtual machines on a store of data and giving only even if partial access through vCenters can cause serious situations of angle with these #s of planning. I recommend that you add the 2nd vCenter to vCOps for monitoring to help to clean up, but you can find that data warehouses are the same signature, but with "possibly" differing vCOps resource name - see what it does in your case. When you migrate computers virtual to the new vCenter, he'll gen new unique identifiers for resources and you will lose your historical data for those VMs. The virtual machines in the new vCenter will be collected as long as new resources and collect measures under this new resourceid... the old resource and associated metrics will be left to age with the rest of your data.

How long until the migration is complete? Until you get your warehouses of data cleaned and VMs on them fully visible to vCOps, I think that the #s will be a little off.

I want to check the disk space and CPU on windows server 2003 box - DON'T see pltform for windows box all 'fileserver mount' or 'CPU '.  I do not see these services

client also. NOT knowing how to manage the windows box. I can go in manually and add an assembly file server service and name it and then this name appears in the services of the platform
health. I shouldn't this for CPU, NetworkServer or mount fileserver interface. ???  I talked to John Mark Walker and is well why this is happening?

I'm not an expert but I have encountered this problem also.  That's why I think it happened to me.

    1. I installed the server and checked it was running and I was able to connect to Headquarters.
    2. I installed my agent on another box and as soon as he said it started successfully killed him so that I could go ahead with the installation of the agent as a service.
    3. I installed the agent as a service and started it.
    4. this particular agent in central administration did not show one of the hard disks or WIN32.

I fixed it by deleting the agent and put it back.  After you start the agent for the first time and it communicates with the server let it run for a while before you kill to install as a service.

    1. stop the service of the agent on the windows machine
    2. open your command line, change to your agents directory and run hq-agent you to uninstall as service
3 remove the data of your agent directory folder
    4. use the download of SERVER installation to install your agent
    a. by running setup.bat - full (option 3 for the installation of the agent)
5 finish the installation of the agent so that your window says 'agent started successfully.
    6. DO NOT CLOSE THIS WINDOW
    7. connect to your HQ and accept your inventory of auto-discovery, access this resource, and you should see that it is only partially completed
    8. Refresh every few minutes and you should see all the icons of availability to change green checks and your additional question as disks and CPU added.
    9. once filled close your agent, install it as a service, and then start it again.

I was killing my initial discovery officer before he could finish, looks like you have the same symptoms.
