Storage VMotion on VMS with snapshots

Currently intend to move to a new san and have read problems with storage vmotion on VMS with snapshots.  Storage vmotion can be run on the virtual machine with snapshots?

No.:

In SRM 5.1 documentation one of the limitations listed is:

When the protection of the VMS with snapshots of the memory state, the ESXi hosts on protection and restoration sites must have compatible processors as defined in the articles of the VMware knowledge base CPU VMotion for Intel processors compatibility requirements and CPU VMotion for AMD compatibility requirements. Guests must also have the same characteristics of active BIOS. If the BIOS of the server configurations do not match, they show a compatibility error message, even if otherwise, they are identical. The two most common to check features are the No-Execute memory Protection (NX / XD) and virtualization technology (VT / AMD - V).

You can work around this limitation by using the mode of the VCA on groups the and protected?

VCA mode will mitigate this risk, but you must make sure that the two Clusters to the protégé and recovery Sites are at the SAME level CVS before take snapshots of the memory.

At the end of the day, only a "planned actual Migration" will verify this.

    Good luck!

  • Migration of VMS with Snapshots

I'm at the stage of planning an ESX 3.5/VC 2.5 upgrade to vSphere.  This will be a 'rotating' upgrade, so many migrations VM will take place.  We are all local storage, so the migration will be in data warehouses.

Unfortunately my shop uses snapshots very strongly.  I am aware of the problems created when popular VM migration with snapshots in data warehouses.  My question is, using VMware Converter makes this possible?  If I can avoid having to delete all snapshots, it would be a huge bonus.  I can't seem to find a definitive answer on whether or not, the converter can handle this.

    Thank you.

    Hi chester78,

You are right, you cannot migrate a virtual machine without deleting the existing snapshots.

The alternative you are thinking to use vCenter Converter to migrate virtual machines, it is a good choice to avoid deleting snapshots and all the time this action takes.  VCenter Converter will migrate virtual machines in the current state.

In the shots, I recommend you read this VMware KB on best practices for snapshots of virtual machines:

  • Storage vmotion a VM with so many vmdk and RDM for NFS

I try a virtual machine that has so much Storage VMotion vmdk and RDM disks to a NFS data store.

I do NOT need convert the RDM disks just move the pointer with the VMDK file will be converted.

    Is this possible?

Now if I try this hot svmotion, I get an error on the RDM which set out the following "virtual disk" drive hard 3' is a direct access mapped LUN that is not supported on the data store 'myEMCNFSds'.»»

If I try this svmotion cold then I get no warning, but it seems that svmotion is trying to convert the RDM NFS drive.

Is your RDM in physical compatibility mode?   Check out this article KB http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1001856

  • Backup VMs with snapshots?

    Hello

We have a system of vCenter 4.1 with iSCSI/FC SAN.

To back up virtual machines, we use BackupExec 2010 with the vCenter Agent.

The problem that we face is that we lose the snapshots when we restore the virtual machines by the Backup Exec agent.

We also tried to use VSB with no better luck.

The question is what are the known solutions to save our virtual machines without losing the snapshots.

(We do not have a license of VMware Data Recovery, and we do not expect to buy it).

    Thanks for your replies.

    Good day.

Hello, most VM backup solutions commit snapshots. I do not recommend you to use snapshots for more than a week at the top, anyway.

I don't think that there is a software that does what you want.

Have a read also this KB for instant best practices. Snapshot issues can be a real nightmare.

  • Mail with overview of VMS with Snapshots

    Hello

I started in a few basic to script things. The controls work very well, but I struggle to get the output of the command by mailbody.

    Here is my script:

SE connect-VIServer - Server "vcentername" - protocol https - user "username" - password "userpassword".

    $snap = get - VM | Get-Snapshot | Select VM, SizeMB

    $smtpServer = "mymailhost".

    $smtpFrom = "sendermailadress".

    $smtpTo = "recipientmailadress".

    $messagesubject = "Snapoverview".

    $messagebody = $snap

    $smtp = new-object Net.Mail.SmtpClient ($smtpServer)

    $smtp. Send ($smtpTo, $messagesubject, $smtpFrom, $messagebody)

I received an email and the subject is correct, but I don't have a body by mail.

    Any ideas?

    Kind regards

My apologies, there is typo in the little script I've provided...

    $messagebody += ($vm. UMM Name + "' t ' + $vm. SizeMB + ' ' n ')

  • Storage vMotion with snapshots

I'm trying to implement storage vMotion in vSphere and I wanted to try to clarify some of the requirements.  3.5, VMS with snapshots could not be SVM' ed.  This has now changed in 4.1 or anyone know if it will change in the future?  Does anyone found a workaround for this limitation?

    Thank you

Currently, there is no work around for this.  The only way is to commit snapshots, then svMotion above.  Who knows what will be the next major version to the table well!

If you have found this helpful at all prices please points using the correct or useful!  Thank you!

  • Storage vMotion of 4.1 to 5.5?

I am in the process of upgrading our environment vSphere. I need critical servers vmotion ESX 4.1 at the glomerulus ESXi 5.5 cluster. The two groups are now managed by a 5.5 vcenter server.

See attachment. The PROD4 cluster hosts are all ESX 4.1 and the Production cluster hosts are the ESXi 5.5

Can I install 5.5 on another host and add it to the cluster PROD4 so that I can vmotion VMs critical for her, then vmotion them to the 5.5 cluster?

Bottom line, it is how to make virtual machines on hosts 4.1 5.5 guests without interruption?

I can think in this case is to add one of the hosts of the old cluster/storage, vMotion the VMs on that host, ESXi 5.5 and then use the Web Client vSphere to migrate hosts and data store to the new cluster. With vSphere 5.5 and the Web Client, you can do this even without shared storage.

  • Data store inventory and storage VMotion

    Hello

    We have a host of ESXi 4.0 U1 with vCenter 4.0 U1 environment 5.

Having acquired a whole new NetApp FC SAN FAS2040, we are trying to gradually Storage VMotion all VMs in front of our old EMC SAN.

However, after VM have been VMotioned of storage, they always appear in the inventory of the store of data EMC (as contained in the NetApp data store!).

If we edit the VM, the spectacle of .vmdks as being located on the NetApp.

Will be the client update its inventory at any time data store?  We tried the view refreshed, restart the client, vCenter services restart, restart the server vCenter - all to nothing does not.

    Thank you very much

    IR88

PS - When you browse NetApp data warehouses, it seems to take a long v. for folders / files to appear! (get "Searching datastore... ("for a while)

Is there anything that is attached to the virtual machines (CDROM/ISO file,...) which is still on the EMC storage?

  • Storage vmotion vcenter

    Hello

Is it possible to storage vmotion the vcenter server.

    Details:

    VCenter server 4.1 on windows 2008 R2

Database Seperetae on windows 2003 Server

The server vcenter on windows 2008 R2 server must be svmotioned. I don't have a server database storage vmotion at this time.

If this is possible, how it safely is appreciated.

    Thank you

non - storage vmotion is made with vm - in fact if you were to power down the virtual machine of vcenter then you would not be able to vmoyion or storage vmotion - Webcam live

  • I can storage vMotion two popular VMS with shared disks?

I have an ESX 3.0.2 Server with local storage and two ESX 3.5 with fiber channel SAN servers. Two VM sharing disks and run it on the computer with only the local storage. Can I use storage vMotion to move these to a 3.5 servers and more at the SAN?

If not; can I migrate the servers (when closed) to the SAN and 3.5 servers without breaking the links on shared disks?

If you close the virtual machines and migrate them, you should be able to access the disks - as the sVmotion update pointers in the vmx file.

If you upsize and lose access to the disk, you will need to do is open the.vmx file for each virtual computer and update the path specified for each disc, not too hard to fix at all. -If you don't like that, you can simply remove and re-add the disc in the VM properties

  • vDR 2.0 on ESXi 4.1u1 - could not create the snapshot (cannot disable Storage VMotion)

Two vCenter servers - updated to 5.0 and the other left to 4.1 for now. All ESXi hosts are always 4.1u1. Updated vDR devices since the notes say 2.0 is compatible with 4.0u3, 4.1u1 and 5.0, but now none of my backups work. No matter what vCenter the plugin works through, each virtual machine backup process immediately fails with the error "failed to create the capture instant for VMname, error-3961 (cannot disable Storage VMotion). I can still take snapshots manually via vSphere Client, so I don't know why vDR fail to take a. Ideas?

Add a few lines to datarecovery.ini on VDR:

    [Options]

    EnableSVMotionCompatibility = 0

and reboot device here. Page 44 of VDR Admin Guide.

  • Storage vMotion with advanced vsphere license

I have the vSphere advanced license that doesn't include a Storage vMotion.

This does mean that I won't be able to do manually storage vmotion with this license, or is what is not included in the new vSphere GUI?

You will not be able to make Storage VMotion.

But many people say Storage VMotion, even when cold migration is performed. Thus, you will not be able to move VMS on another store data seamlessly, without power off VM.

  • Storage vMotion with Syncrep on Equallogic San

    Hello

We recently bought 2 San Equallogic (PS6510ES) and turned on synchronous replication between them.

We use ESXi 5.5 and followed the best practices guide to disable TCP ack and 60 logintimeout value.

Everything seems to work fine until we tried Storage vMotion/migration and cloning VMS on the San.

When we did the migration of 2 volumes on the EQL SAN storage (the target volume has active syncrep), the target volume will be out-of-sync and then the storage vMotion will hang sometimes.

The worst is when such a problem has occurred, all other volumes on the EQL constantly to respond also. All volumes will not respond until we rebooted the corresponding ESXi host (NOTE: simple shut down/power outside the host won't help.) The San EQL will only return to normal after a reboot of the ESXi host).

If we pause / off the syncrep before Storage vMotion, the problem will not happen.

    Is this normal or not?

In addition, whenever the problem occurred, the latency of writing the corresponding volume will be dry and we will receive alerts similar to the following:

    connection iSCSI target ' xx.xx.xx.xx:3260, iqn.2001 - 05.com.equallogic:xxxxx - test-volume ' initiator 'xx.xx.xx.xx:xxxxx, eqlinitiatorsyncrep' failed for the following reason:

Initiator, disconnected from the target when connecting.

    Thanks in advance.
