SVMotion rdm for vmdk

When I try to svmotion a virtual machine with physical rdm attached to it, I want to convert VMDK but I do not see the option. I fact svmotioned the vmx and vmdk Os file. Also moved the map of rdm file. How convert vmdk?

Remove it, he as a virutal rdm readd and then you can to a vmdk svmotion

VMware converter should work too

Here's how to convert your phsical one rdm rdm virutal if you need:

I just did a 1.5 to non - RDM vmdk, a week or two ago.  It was between 2 datacenters with 10g connectivity.  It took less than a day (I guess that 10 to 12 hours, but I don't remember for sure).  It was on ESXi 4.1U1.  I did it during the day, but it was a test system with a database MySQL on this subject.

I did a 600 + GB non - RDM vmdk between these same data centers while we were still in ESX 4.0 and it took several days.  Moral of the story is to make sure that your ESX installation is current...

  • Shared RDM or VMDK of NLB Cluster?

We have a cluster of load-balanced NETWORK R2 2012 hosting a web application.  We would like to have a shared storage location that can be referenced by each server in real time.  I created a LUN and added a RDM and VMDK, but the other server sees no change, unless I re - mount the drive.  I added the channel multi-writer in advanced options for the two virtual machines thinking that can solve the problem, but nevertheless - I suspect that this could lead to an easy way to corrupt the files.

That said, what is the best approach for this?  We currently have a network share that is referenced by each server, but for me that adds variables to a network problem, causing problems, or the account used to authenticate the part does not.

What other options do we have?

Thanks to this, we recently a million times.

NTFS (without CSV) is not compatible with the cluster file system and as such cannot handle simultaneous write access from multiple hosts to a block storage device. Your configuration will not work in a world purely physical as well.

  • RDM for machine P2Ved?

    Guys,

We plan to virtualize a server who got (200 GB) SAN attached storage.

Rather than energize the drive that uses space SAN, I think to present this record in particular a RDM for VM.

    • Is it feasible?

    • All the challenges?

    • I have to UN-map the physical server LUN first inorder to to the virtual machine as a RDM?

    • I suppose, that just I have to present the same LUN on different ESX hosts in the cluster to use the Vmotion/DRS, is it true?

    • Best practices?

    1: Yes

2: not that I can think of to...  Why RDM on VMFS?

    3: I'd do it.

  • Convert a RDM a VMDK (virtual disk)

We are currently running vSphere/ESX 4 and EMC SAN.  Our SAN is replaced by an updated model.  Dell/EMC will perform the data migration and recently told us that if we want to keep our RDM they would be able to copy their bit to bit.  Which means that we cannot change our size of the LUN.

They told us to move our existing data to LUN more (or less) that we need to convert our RDMs VMDK.

We currently have three separate virtual computer that will connect to a RDM on SAN (Exchange, SQL, and a file server).

Is it possible to convert the RDM in VMDK?  If so, how?

I searched the forums and has been unable to find an answer.

Keep your support ticket opened until the problem is solved - you did update the VMware Support?

  • Live Conversion RDM in VMDK

    Hi all

I have a VM (which cannot be turned off) on Esx 4.0 and I want to use storage vmotion to convert a disk (virtual machine has several disks) of RDM VMDK.

    Any advice or experience?

    Thank you very much

The main question is: is this a way RDM physical or virtual RDM.

    of http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1005241

For vSphere 4.0 and higher, the virtual disks and Virtual Mode RDM pointer files can be moved in the destination data store and can be converted into discs supplied thick or thin-set during the migration until the destination is not a NFS data store. Physical RDM Mode pointer files can be moved in the destination data store, but cannot be converted.

    Must be missing something.

    Yes it is possible,

first configure the ISCSI for storage of DELL, > then create a LUN and present to the ESX > can do a scan of storage > then do not create a VMFS volume

    > now, go to the virtual machine > and add RDM

  • How files request for vmdk with location of store data using perl sdk

    Hello

I need to retrieve a list of (xxx - flat hard) and vmdk files for a virtual machine on an ESX Server.

The virtual machine I have has two disks that are in different data stores.

I changed the /usr/lib/vmware-vcli/apps/vm/myvminfo.pl to dump the full data.

I spilled the $vm_view and found that the data you are looking for do not print.

I'm new to VMWare and don't know how to go forward.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

You should be able to use just LayoutEx property of the VirtualMachine.  Keep in mind this property gets refreshed on a schedule, so don't always present not unless you explicitly referesh it yourself.  However, that can add some overhead VI retesting the data store (s).

The attached script is quite simple, but it can help you get started.  To % disk_parts hash key is the key of the device, you can use this to get configuration-> hardware-> device information.  The string under layoutEx-> disc keys should be descriptor-> measure.  You can query the type of the object file if you need to be sure or want to only print as well.

You can exit the script in certain functions or map() calls to make it more readable.  You need to work through the key tables nested loop, so it would probably be good to format into something easier to follow.  Another option would be to create a hash of the file of the key values card, so you can do research without expensive loops.

    Samples:

    $ perl ListVmdkForVm.pl - username = administrator - password = VMware1! -Server = 172.16.254.10--vmname=Test\(Renamed\)
2000: Test [VLAB-ESX-01_LOCAL] (renamed) _1/Test (renamed) hard, [VLAB-ESX-01_LOCAL] Test (renamed) _1/Test (renamed) - flat hard
  • Server for vmdk hardware backups using vRanger connection

    Hello

We try to implement vRanger connection for backup of our VMS (ESX 3.5) and would like to have installed on a stand-alone server. There are currently 36 VMs that is likely to grow. Each virtual machine has a disk of 10 GB C residing in SAN. We want to save these files vmdk SAN to the server where vRanger connection is installed.

Could anyone here suggest some options for a server to have it put in place? Given that the size of the files would be around 400 GB for now and much more later, the speed of the hard drive must be considered too.

    Thank you.

Cool! So what kind of records should I go then?

What is your budget?  SAS is the fastest, but we are talking here about 400GB drive will cost twice what a single 1.2 to or even 1.5 TB SATA.  Even if you have the budget for it, it's a complete waste of money, since you can get 4 times the storage for the same price.

RAID 0 will give you the most performance, however if you keep several revisions on your backup disk, maybe not prudent to use the RAID 0 in the long term, but there again this depends on your backup strategy, you want backups LONG or SHORT term?  If you make full backups every week, as we do, RAID 0 is fine.  We can accept the risk given that do us COMPLETE each week and because backups are unexpected, not to archive, it is not a big problem for us, but every company is different.

Network is not your main concern, however, if you have a decent network of 1 GB, that's all you need.  Just buy whatever you can afford for storage, if backup speed is your main concern, go SAS, if not go SATA.

  • Compare the performance of virtual machine using RDM for physical Machine with HBA

With the help of some great users, I recently converted a node of a cluster, MSCS running Server 2003 and SQL 2000 to a virtual machine for the cluster resulting has a physical node and a virtual node using RDM drives. See http://communities.vmware.com/thread/187822 If you're interested.

Now my question revolves around performance. Colleagues who manage programs running on that cluster related that a backup every night a database on the thesystem take 10 minutes on a physical hardware and takes 30 minutes. A restoration took 45 minutes and now takes a little less than three hours. Is this kind of drop in performance to be expected? Is there some specific changes that I can look to improve performance.

The virtual machine works like a single virtual machine on a machine of update3 ESX3.5. ESX server has two processors Quad-cores and 32 GB of ram, 30 GB assigned to the virtual machine.

Any help or pointers to more information would be greatly appreciated.

Check your card vSCSI.  If you P2V'ed, you're likely to have a Buslogic adapter.  The Buslogic adapter will limit the length of the queue 1 and limit the I/O.  Replace with the free and see if that helps you.
