Swap File question?
Hi guys hope can help.
I P2V had a server ESXi 5.5 using the latest VMware converter and kept the the VM Version to 8.
When I try to start the virtual machine, I get the following error:
Cannot create the file ' / vmfs/volumes/5391ca58-87a88951-cf0d-2c44fd8a9f40/vmx-AMLSERVER.aml.local-2469954544-1.vswp ': not found
Not able to start VMX: msg.vmk.status.VMK_NOT_FOUND
I have ssh would be vmfs/volumes / and run the ls command, but there is no reference to "5391ca 58-87 a 88951-cf0d-2c44fd8a9f40.
The data store must be "53a1a9b3-d8a2c8bd-0df9-2c44fd8a9f40" because it is where lives the virtual machine.
I tried to add the following line to the VMX file sched.swap.dir = "/ vmfs/volumes/53a1a9b3-d8a2c8bd-0df9-2c44fd8a9f40/AMLSERVER.aml.local/" but after the addition of the virtual machine to inventory even once, I still get the error above?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Nevermind I figured it
Virtual configuration--> the location of the Machine Swap file--> change--> store of the swap file in the same directory as the virtual machine.

When the vm swap file is created? Question of test sample.
Have several vmware docs what state it takes place when vm powers on:
sched.swap.Persist Specifies if the virtual machine swap files
If persists or removed when the VM
is turned off. By default, the system creates the swap
file of a virtual machine when the virtual machine is
power and removes the swap file when the virtual
machine is turned off.
The host creates swap VMX files automatically, so there is enough free space on the disk at the same time a virtual machine is running.
So that's what I answered on the supplied vmware test and it was marked as incorrect, but he gave no explanation. So when is it created exactly?

Disable the paging file on a Windows Server virtual machine has the same effect as if the server was not virtualized? In other words, allowances from the virtual machine Windows will ensure that the pages of physical memory, or memory can still be exchanged on the disc by the ESX Server?
As Anton has pointed out, it is not the virtual machine that decides if his memory will be phyiscal or virtual is to the vmkernel on the ESX Server - if the vmkernel has a lot of available physical memory then, Yes, deletion of the pagefile in your virtual machine will have the same effect and the virtual machine will use virtual memory which the vmkernel will put then in physical memory - however if the vmkernel does not enough memory and you have deleted the virtual machine swap file then the vmkernel is forced to exchange the virtual machine to the pagefile vmkernel impacting on the performance of virtual machines.

Windows 7 does not take into account swap file settings
I have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit installed on a system with a mirrored system disk and two disks no mirroring, including a SSD drive which is configured with ReadyBoost. Because mirroring is to the integrity of the data, and has a performance cost associated with it, I don't want any file on my system disk. Instead, I want that page files on non mirrored disks.
So I use computer-> properties and go to the "advanced system settings" to bring up the System Properties dialog box. I click on the "Advanced" tab and in the 'Performance' section, click on 'Settings' to bring up the "Performance Options" dialog box Then I click the "Advanced" tab and in the "Virtual memory" section, click on 'Change' to bring up the dialog box 'virtual memory '. Here, it lists the drive letters and for each drive paging file options.
I put the SSD (:)) has 'Custom size' with ' Initial size (MB): ' as 24576 and ' size maximum (MB): ' as 24576, click on 'Set'. "" "")
I put the other disk not mirrored (b) 'Custom size' with ' Initial size (MB): ' as 24576 and ' size maximum (MB): ' as 24576, click on 'Set'.»»» "
I put the system disk (c :)) "No paging file" and click "Set".) I also tried setting the system drive (c :)) "Minimum allowed" value of 16 MB (size initial and maximum size).)
I get the warnings appropriate, if I didn't put "No paging file" and accept the consequences. If I put the pagefile to 16 MB on the system drive, I don't get a warning of not having a swap file.
I reboot, to let the new settings take effect. When the system is in place, if I put "No paging file" on the system drive, Windows tells me that it has created a pagefile on the system drive, and the file is approximately the same size as the physical memory, i.e. 12 G and the "Performance Options" Advanced tab reports that "the file size for all readers of Total paging" is 12288MB.
If, instead, I put the system drive for the authorized minimum 16 MB paging file, Advanced tab "Performance Options" reports "Total paging file for all readers size" is 16 MB.
In any situation he always respects the settings specified in the dialog virtual memory for other readers.
I checked that 'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PageFileOnOsVolume' is set to 0, and 'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\TempPageFile' does not exist OR has been set to 0 (Windows always change this parameter to 1 if I chose "No paging file" for the system volume.) So, I change it to 0, reboot and Windows it passes 1 ad creates the 12288 MB pagefile on the system volume).
I disabled BitLocker - it does not start.
I don't really know what hoops I have to pass through to convince Windows to use the swap file configuration that I specify. At the very least, if I put in place minimum swap file on the system drive, to avoid the essential consequences pagination on a mirrored disk performance and to prevent Windows from automatically creating the 12 G pagefile on the system drive, I expect that the other swap files on non mirrored disks will be used by the system , but dialogue "Performance Options" it is clear that single paging file in use is the one on the system volume - exactly what I don't want.
Can you please tell me how to get Windows to my settings?

How to replace the SWAP file. SYS that bulky and bulky?
Hello
My question is how to replace the SWAP file. SYS that is bulky and bulky?
Is it possible to "BRING" different "restore points" as separate files and reduce in size for the management and portability?:
The simple answer to your question is no!
Please provide a copy of your system information file. Type the system information in the search box above the Start button and press the ENTER key (alternative is select Start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, system information). Select file, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Not to place the cursor in the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new information file system each time system information is available. You must allow a minute or two before the file is completely filled before exporting a copy. Please download to your OneDrive (formerly Sky Drive), share with everyone and post a link here. Normal mode preferred report. Please say if the report was obtained in safe mode.

SWAP file data store remove issue
Hello
I'm currently moving VMs to the data store newly created as well the datastore file swap. I have already change on all ESXi hosts, the data store were swap file will reside, however, I have still a few virtual machines on the old data store. I know not if I vMotion virtual machines from one host to another it will change the location for the swap file. My question is, can I just remove the old data store without affecting production not VMs remained the swapfile on the old location? Just try to find a solution faster than vMotion every single one of the virtual machines.
Thanks for any suggestions or comments!
Chris
Hello
As long as all hosts are no longer using the data store and the cluster is not defined using volume swapfile host (rather than storing with VM) then you should be able to disassemble the old swap partition.
Bare in mind, vMotion/svMotion a virtual computer, you must be sure to move all the files and the virtual machine is set to store his exchange with the virtual machine files. Check that the old swap partition is no longer in use, and then take it apart. In theory the fastest way is to ensure that all VMs are defined to store swap with virtual machine files to the off and on again, forcing a new .vswp file in the same device. But it would of course affect your VM availability.
I've seen in the past that even if the volume was no longer used by the guests, that guests required a restart until I managed to remove the old Exchange store data, just in case you meet that!

Cache host / location of the Swap file
I thought to move the files to a local SSD disk swap. My hosts are not really short memory, that I was just trying to save space on the SAN by moving Exchange out of the data store files. Is there a place any allowing the host Cache option if I move to the local SSD disk swap files?
Evening,
A few points to consider:
When you say that the swap files do you have the virtual machine swap or Exchange against guests. I would advise against the local Exchange against guests being on ssd for reasons HA.
If you mean that the virtual machine swap file, this file is created when the virtual machine is running and is the size of the virtual memory of the virtual machine - any booking. Put this file on ssd local has two benefits:
1. swap because of the speed speed local ssd
2. do not store your san (a requirement of your original question)
Now, please keep in mind that this file is only used during the excessive demands of memory operations. So, if you have zero on commit on the memory, they will never be used #1 do not really have an advantage. If you find yourself with free' place san ing. If it is essential for you, then of course do and by all means turn the swap feature to the host cache. (Good article on it here http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2011/08/18/swap-to-host-cache-aka-swap-to-ssd/) If you have ssd and you want to see the performance of your SSD where no more if hire you may just want to wait for 5.5 and use vSphere Flash Read Cache (article here that & #8217; s new in vSphere 5.5 storage |) VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs)
Please let me know if that answers your question.
Thank you
Joseph

Hi experts,
Can have a power of 0 Kb pagefile (.swp < vmname >) VM
This virtual machine has been deployed through vapp
Then after some time, when I put load on the virtual machine. I see a new file being created too
the data store has a new swap file too (< vmname + somecharacters > .swp)
so my vm has two Exchange files now the first of course is zero.
Why is this happening?
Why the second pagefile is created?
When a file is created? What is the purpose / use of it?
-sr
Hello
Yes, it is possible to have 2 files .vswp since vSphere 5.0. Check: http://myvirtualcloud.net/?p=2051
The answer to the other question is also Yes, you can have an empty .vswp if you are reserving memory which configured virtual machine.

Hello, I have a question for exchanging files. If I create a virtual machine with 1vcpu, 2 GB of ram and does not use a resource pool, then I see that my swap file is 2 GB in size. I understand that, so far. If I use a reservation of memory 1 GB, my swap will be 1 GB. Understand the part as well. I don't understand, when this file will be used? I read a few links on the web, and I see that this has nothing to do with the windows pagefile. If I have a VM with 1 GB of vram and all that 1 GB is used, I think windows will start to write the swap file, which will kill performance. Unless I'm wrong and it is during this swap file is used?
Any help?

There are three steps the vmkernel uses in managing and releasing memory.
- Transparent Page Sharing - the vmkernel is aware of all the pages are stored by the VMs - when it identifies identical pages it will store both read-only memory and when a change needs to be done will be copied into its own space in memroy - what is completely transparent to the operating system do you have in the virtual machine
- Balloon pilot - this is the driver which is installed with the VMware tools and typically is inactive - it is operated by the vmkernel when the ESXi host runs hsort physical memory - he began claiming the memory in the virtual memory of VMs force the operating system to continue its own Exchange/swap file space.
- by vm vmkernel swap file - what you're asking-if the vmkernel does not enough memory to satisfy your VMs need it begins to swap pages of memory to the swap space / as you pointed out it is independent of the guest operating system virtual memory and is equal to the amount of memory assigned to the virtual machine and the reserve of memory of the VMS - fi that everything works as designed Yes virtual machine will already use virtual memory OS comments

Probably a really stupid question here... I just inherited a host-6 cluster with 8 LUNS attached. I do some cleaning and notice of the LUN has a folder 'swap '. There are 4 folders with names of PHYSICAL servers, we have on the network, each containing:
var folder
download folder
file unswap (~ 1 GB)
It does not allow me to move or copy an any of them (even the one where we have decommissioned).
Anyone know why they are here? And if so, where can I check that these switch settings of the file on the individual servers. I guess this is a swap file that someone made on the SAN, but I checked the settings of page file typical of windows on servers and says that they are on their C: drive.
Thank you!!

What to do with free mini PCIe - Flash for the swap file
Hello
in my T500, there is a free mini near the location of SIM location PCIe, but that's only half of length. I found an SSD at SuperTalent in these Dimensions. Someone out there who has tried to use this slot for storage, for example $TEMP or swap file?
Kind regards
Ronny
It will not work. This SSD is designed for the Dell Mini 9, which uses a special type of mini PCI-e slot [FLASH_CON]. This slot machine is connected to a PATA or SATA controller on the motherboard.
The DSS will not work on PCI-e standard minis housing because they are not connected to a PATA or SATA controller.
I think that half height mini PCI-e slot is used for Intel Turbo Memory.
