T4600C & Linux - distribution/version?

12:17 08/20/2008

Hi people,

I inherited a fairly old Toshiba laptop, T4600C with a severely crushed of Win98SE installation. When I tried to start a PCLinuxOS Live CD 2007, it performs a loop of GRUB menu back to reboot (home Toshiba logo screen), because of course, there an i486sl 33 MHz processor (I think).

Being a newbie to Lx, with PC 27 years technician M$, is there a Lx distribution that would be:
-install on this laptop (preferably without tweaking & compilation - I don't know how to do yet)
-integrate (share files, maybe apps) with PCLinuxOS 2007 running on my desktop and laptop Acer

The Toshiba has to a USB port (I'm sure it's only 1.0/1.1) I would use for a D-Link DWL-G120 card WiFi 54 Mbps to connect to my local network. It also has a slot PCMCIA (record unknown) which I may also be able to use a Linksys Ethernet/network adapter around if the WiFi is not an option.

I am VERY grateful to any info someone might provide. I hate to see things like that going in the implementation of discharge, but need to do something useful with it if it's going to take place in my tiny apartment.

Also - if anyone could direct me to a short & direct tutorial on tweaking Lx/compilation, I would really start to learn about it given that almost everything requires that at any given time. I'm clear enough and quickly learn on my own need (Windows background) "Technician-level" guide (not Lx for Dummies) to get myself started.

Thank you very much, in advance!
-Tom

I would like to try ubuntu or some debian because they have to work. Otherwise, I highly recommend to use gentoo because it s difficult to configure, but it works well configured on almost all systems, even on 386 with 32 MB of RAM.

Don t wait too, perhaps it would also help get some old hat suse or red distribution with a very old kernel (2.2 or 2.0... something around this kernel version)

Welcome them

and good luck :)

Regular distributions Linux versions may be supported for a few years more or less Long term releases of the same or other Linux distributions support there.

The drawback with the LTS (like Ubuntu with some versions) versions, is that they tend to use older packages more stable vs using the most current set.

Older versions LTS which are always supported by distribution may not meet required minimums to use the current version of Firefox for example.

  • Satellite L100 113 - Linux distribution has recommended

    Hello

I tried to install Linux on this machine several times, and each time finished with an installation that will not work.
    Any recommendations?

    Hello

Your message is perhaps not very clearly explain the problem.
You say that the distro "does not work". What is this?

Looking at the model, it seems a bit limited in material resources:

    1.6 MHz Celeron
    256 MB OF RAM.

With this material, you must agree to use a fairly basic desktop computer (no Gnome or KDE) but rather XFCE, LXDE or maybe even more basic.
Take a look at Distrowatch dot com to see all the big (which means MUCH) distributions.
They are not listed in 'heavy' how they are, but you can look around to see what looks interesting.

I have found some that you can try:

    Tiny core
    Macpup
    Maybe the OS Watt

Please understand that even a light distro / Office will need memory for some applications.
Stripping so down to suit your 256 MB will be for sure means that some of the easy functions are exchanged for less memory hungry versions.
Example - many offices Gnome uses the network manager to connect to any conceivable network (WLAN, LAN, 3G...)
However, as network manager could be to eager memory of leaner distributions, you may face a situation were any network connection local will be a manual task that requires some expertise.

If I misunderstood your message, please specify!

    See you soon

Unfortunately, the agent support Toshiba doesn't Linux and, therefore, you will find not all Toshiba for Linux drivers on all laptops.

  • Can satellite L650D - 12 p - I install a Linux distribution on it?

    Hello.

5 months ago I've done probably one of my biggest mistakes; I bought a Satellite L650D - 12 p. To my horror, I discovered the inability of the computer to use, or even to install Linux any.

Since I bought it, I tried about 4 times a month, to install Linux, nothing helps. I tried searching through forums of Linux, tried several settings, etc. BIOS Insyde H2O L650D - just 12 p does not work with any distribution, the newest BIOS (which was released 6 months ago) doesn't make any difference either. ACPI is totally off, the DSDT tables are corrupt. Other people say ACPI general problems with Toshiba machines; It seems I'm not the only one.

This is how it is supposed to be? The customer is refused, the right to use the operating system he wishes to? We are forced to use only Microsoft products? Even Apple computers can install any other operating systems.

I thought that the age of the software forcing on people have long since disappeared. Alas, it isn't.

    Hi Sylvestre,.

In General, you can install what you want on your laptop. Linux should also be possible, but there is no official support for Toshiba how to do this and there is no Linux drivers for this. If you want Linux, see a few external pages for advice and useful tips.

In addition, this could be an interesting document for you:

  • G2 250 HP: HP 250 G2 - black screen on startup with all Linux distributions

    Hello

I bought this laptop a few months. Any Linux kernel has trouble handling this notebook, although it has been, said a statement with Ubuntu and I expected to be well supported.

Any distribution installed, to start the laptop can not handle the blackscreen monitor and goes. I noticed that the LEDs are still quietly "flashing" and it work, but it remains black. The only way to boot your laptop is adding to the 'nomodeset' kernel command line, but to start the PC laptop resolution is too low and the use becomes uncomfortable.

I solved all the problems of the Bios Update. Thank you all.

One way would be to start the Firefox Profile Manager in each Linux instance and that it points to a profile of another Firefox installation folder, preferably one that has been customized in a satisfactory manner. You can then delete the profile by default in every Linux installation.

  • Support for Mozilla Firefox 2.0 for the latest Desktop Linux OS version

Many applications even those most recent go well with the latest operating systems, but each management is through the web interface. Unfortunately, all the product release note the document talks about the browser or / and the java requirements. It lists Internet Explorer up to 7 but Mozilla firefox only up to 2.0. I am struggling with getting the right version of browser and using the latest operating system (like OpenSuSe 12.1 or SLED 11.1).

How I always stick on version 2.0 of Firefox? When they are all now updated to 8! I won't switch to Windows OS just because it meets the needs using IE 6 or 7.

Not sure if you could the 2.0.0 Firefox old enough to work on openSUSE 12.1 without work at least as I can't get Firefox 2.0.0 Mozilla to work on openSUSE 11.3 without having some problems of addiction even after installing stuff that should cover what she was giving errors on in the console.

If you are ready to use Windows for this thing so you can perhaps use portable version of Firefox in Firefox 2.0.0.20 where you can put it on hard disk or USB key. This version will not affect your installed Firefox.

    Greeting, ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to know why were produced (mainly in Acrobat Reader) for Linux (in my case Ubuntu) abandoned and if there is any means possible to reproduce.

Would like to inform that the request of Adobe for Linux products has been incredibly low compared to MAC OS and Windows. It was the main cause of abolition of aid for Linux.

When the product will again be available for this OS, there is no update available.

  • When released the new version of Mozilla Firefox for Linux.

Whenever I open the browser, it continues to display the message that is earlier than the version of my browser.

But I cant Update since its not released yet for Linux.

Do not wait for the new Version to be published
Other than that, the browser is fast and easy to use

You seem to have the provided version of Firefox 35.0.1 Ubuntu

You can get the update of Firefox 39.0 of in on your distribution package manager or you can get Firefox from www.mozilla.org or www.mozilla.org/firefox/all

If you choose to mozilla.org , sure it is 64-bit as 32 bits will not run unless you have the appropriate packages.

Mozilla does not updates for versions of others, including the packages provided by Linux distributions.
