The catalog import

I'm trying to synchronize annotations on images between two catalogs.  When I try to import from a catalog, Lightroom seems to stop.

My main catalog has about 96 000 images.  I exported 870 pictures to another catalog, and my assistant update ratings on those.  When I grew up in LR and tried to import updates from the small catalog in the big catalog, it took over an hour for LR finish "modified photos check duplicate '.  Then, when I told him to go and import metadata updates, it ran for hours without any apparent progress.

I looked around and seen only in some versions of LR, there is a problem of importing catalogs in the 64-bit version.  I used the 3.4RC 64-bit in Windows 7 with 6 GB of memory.  I tried the 32-bit version of 3.4RC and had the same results.  I tried the 32-bit and 64-bit of LR 3.3 and saw the same behavior.

Is this normal performance of the catalog import?  A bug in LR?  Or I do something wrong?

My ultimate goal is to allow my assistant to rate on his computer images, and then re-import the votes in my main catalog.  I'd be also interested in any suggestions on a better way to handle this.

Thank you!

David

You n ' want to be copy/move the file unnecessarily. Fortunately, it is possible for the two parties to share the same files on a network. So, it would be the way to go.

  • The catalog import and copy

I replaced my computer and now reinstall lightroom and created a new catalog and wanted to import photos and the backup, however, lightroom does not offer me the copy function, why?  How to operate?

This is not the right approach. You should not import your photos.

You must move the photos to the new computer, preferably in the same place, as they were on the old computer. You have to find your old computer catalog file and move it to the new computer, and double-click it.

  • Error importing the catalog

    Hi all

Earlier, I exported a number of images of my main catalog to a separate working catalog.  Now, I'm ready to merge these changes and additional images in the main catalog.  I opened the catalog main, selected the catalog import and select the catalogue of work.  LR cranks for a while, and then he shows me the dialog box asking how to handle the new images, where I select to copy new images in the catalog.  I then start the import and quickly get an "Unexpected error" dialog box and import process stops.

When I use the Mac Console application, I see the following error messages:

    Paul,

To isolate the problem, I would try a couple of things:

    • Export catalogue of work in the catalog in another, and then import them from the exported catalog
    • Import the catalog of work in a newly created catalog

    Beat

  • "Cannot use the catalog because it is not writable and cannot be opened.

    Lightroom 6.5 8.1 Windows

I get this error message. However, the catalog is here. I also opened LR in administrator mode, but that doesn't help either.

The old catalog in a new catalog import does not work either. I've worked since the last backup.

You kindly give a retrieve from the catalog import tool?

The permissions are set correctly, and as I said, I also started LR with administrator privileges. Same result.

I ended up using sqlite, saved lrcat file in sql file and initialized in lrcat file. Everything works. I don't understand why Adobe does not offer a repair service to do the same. It cost me 30 minutes of searching on Google.

  • Import the catalog - only images not file folders

On the road, I make a temporary LR catalog and store the images in subfolders (e.g. particular State Park etc.).  When I get home I want to import images into specific folders in my archive main.  Some of the files already exist, or can I not want to use a different name, I don't want to create additional subfolders.  How can I me LR to only import images to the location I specified?

LR seems always to import folder encompassing also as new subfolders contained in the location you choose in the importation of the Catalog dialog box.

When you import pictures from the trip catalog, you do a generic import or a "catalog import"?

If you perform an import of generic, you may need to copy the directory tree of your images using the Explorer/Finder, and then perform an import 'Add '.

If the 'import from catalog', you may need to look at the file manages the settings in there.

  • Import from another catalog - cannot select the catalog items

I'm trying to merge a temporary catalog, I started on my laptop in my 'main' catalog - both are v5.7.1.  I exported the photos from my laptop in a directory on my NAS, including raw files.  I see the catalog so all the 5,000 or if raw files it.

Next step - import catalog in my catalog 'main' - where the problem occurs.  I can't select all items in the catalogue - they have dimmed, and I can't click on it to select it.  See screen capture below:

    LR Catalog import err.png

I have reason to believe that it is a matter of import rather than an export problem, because if I copy the exported catalog to a location not connected to the network and that you open in LR, I see pictures of 5000-ish.  I can't merge via import.

I could really use a helping hand in this regard, because I spent a good bit of time, to the note of these files over the weekend, and I wouldn't just as quickly again.

I wonder if this is due to the fact that the exported catalog (any one) resides on a network drive.  I tested this feature, last winter (Re: import / export of files between computers on a wireless network) and it works perfectly.  But LR will not allow the primary catalog be stored on a network drive, then maybe it is linked in a way that I find with my tests.

I suggest to export a catalog little test with just a few pictures and place the catalog and photos on a locally connected drive.  If it works, this indicates a workaround solution that bothers.

  • Virtually all of the files are missing after you import the catalog.

I'm NOT sure that has nothing to do with lightroom, except that yesterday my files were all there, now, they are absent.  It could be a hard disk failure.  Its just strange that it affected only the files that I tried to interfere in my lightroom catalog today.

Well as out of town, I pulled a few thousand photos and them ingested on a daily basis in a new lightroom catalog that I created on my laptop.  Files imported into a USB external drive.  The laptop is win 10.  It is on the latest version of lightroom, CC.  Yesterday, everything was going well with the catalog, disk, and files.  All were there.  The catalogue and the photos were on the same drive.  The laptop was listed as the letter 'g ':

Once I went back to the office today, I wanted to import pictures to my largest catalog on my desktop.  I have used this external hard drive for all my new photos in 2016.  On this PC, Win 10, the letter of the external drive is also "X:".  I started lightroom in my big catalogue very well.  I chose to import from a different catalog, accessed my X Catalogue outside in the car and started importing without a copy of the files.  This should leave the files in the same location.  It took a little more time I expected to import this catalog.  When I went to the structure of folders inside lightroom, it seemed that all the files have been imported correctly.  But there was a "?" from the folder.  I assumed that I just needed to do a "find" on the X drive as I thought that my lightroom catalog could have been pointing to the G drive.  Locate, but cannot find the files.  I've used windows explore to browse my files and the folders and files were all missing, with the exception of a folder where I shot some photos with a camera, about 100 photos in all.  Thousands of photos from other cameras were all absent.

So next time, I ran a scan disk and windows came with a message of repair.  The repair said that it worked successfully.  But I looked in the Explorer, the files were still missing.  I ran a scan disk again and no error found.

I looked in the trash on the desktop and there is no files on this disc.  If the missing files are still missing.  I had not saved the files yet since they were really vacation photos and have no critical and since I was going to save them after that I spent in review on the workstation.  Some are still on the cards and could be retrieved.  But I formatted my main map at least a couple of times and I'm afraid that most would have been crushed and is more viable, even using the card recovery software.

Before you begin importing today, I don't check the disk to make sure that all my files were there.  There is no error in windows at startup and I don't mind just to check in Explorer or open the 'new' catalog first.

    1. Could Lightroom have somehow deleted files and can they be retrieved?
    2. Assuming that it was a Windows / hard drive error, can anyone recommend a program attempt to recover files lost like that?  Given that the entire folders, sound also lack if the index of the obtained partially erased disc.  But maybe the files are still there.  Then there is a program to search for them?

Note that the other files on this drive all seem to be good.  The only missing are import of today.

It is drive X:, but the files are not there.
    portable version is 2015.6

    Desktop version is 2015.5

Somehow, the windows removed them.  I use EaseUS data recovery to retrieve them.  He had no problem finding the files.  So I guess we can mark this resolved.

    Thank you.

  • Could not import the catalog of items

    Good evening

I just installed LR CC 2015.  I am trying to import my PS 12 elements catalog.  After the installation of LR, he asked if I wanted to import my catalog of items.

    I answer OK.

It completes step 1 but very quickly the steps 2 and 3 flash by and the process fails with an error message "Cannot import catalog items due to an unknown error."

I went to the elements and ran a repair of the catalog.  No problems were found, but I ran the repair anyway.  (I have only a catalog with photos about 7200 in it.)  Try the import again.  Same result.

My computer is an iMac mid-2013 with 8 GB of RAM.  The OS is 10.11.4.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Rico

The problem has been resolved.  I made changes to my catalog of PES 12, one that could have been useful.

    • deleted the catalog items that does not generate stamps for unknown reasons.  Those with a "broken" thumbnail  There were few of them.
    • Deleted the catalog items that were orphans - were found no associated file on the hard drive.  There were about 10 of them.
    • Deleted about 10 sound files from the catalog.  Not sure how they got there in the first place.
    • Updated the Visual index.  (less probably helped)
    • Ran optimize catalog
    • Ran repair (for the second time) catalog, even if the dialog box indicated that it was not necessary.
  • I get a message when I am importing (this seems to be a duplicate of another picture already in the catalog) pic is grayed out.

I get a message when I am importing (this seems to be a duplicate of another picture already in the catalog) pic is grayed out.

From the library module, look for the image with the same filename and see where LR think there already.

  • Not able to open Lightroom "the catalog cannot be imported because it is already in use by another copy of Lightroom.

To move the catalog to a new computer, you do not need to import using Lightroom, you can copy the entire folder to the new location.

  • Lightroom cannot import this catalog.  The catalog doesn't seem to be a valid Lightroom Catalog

Try to import photos from a different catalog by selecting and choosing the catalog to import since I get the pop up "Lightroom cannot import this catalog.  The catalog does not appear to be a valid Lightroom Catalog"I have lightroom 5.7.1 installed on both my Macbook Pro laptop and iMac desk top.  The two are running OS 10.10.5.  I try to import photos from the laptop to the desktop on a wireless home network.  Other than this recent attempt to import pictures, everything seems to work normally on both computers

Maybe I tried to import about 800 photos, each of about 40MB, through a wireless network.  Most of the photos of the number were consecutive, so perhaps there was a /corruption of interruption in the process.  Anyway thanks for the help

  • My old computer crashed, but I have a backup of the catalog. Should I restore my catalog first, or should I import my photos first?

Hi, my old computer fell down, but I have a backup of the catalog and my photos are in an internal HD that I already install it on my new PC. My question is should I first restore my catalog or should I import my photos first?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hector.

    Hi Hector.

You need to restore your old Lightroom Catalog backup, and which should be containing all your images and changes you have made so far, however, it can display as missing images that can be moved.

Follow the steps in this article to move the missing images when the catalog is restored: How to find missing photos in Photoshop Lightroom

    Kind regards
