The catalog - use one or Multiple?

Question for those of you who have thousands of photos in your catalog. I'm looking for some advice. I've got about 10,000 files in my catalog and this catalog lives on an external hard drive, since I did not have enough space on my computer's internal drive to shelter. I find that Photoshop - more precisely, the organiser - may run very slowly, and I've read before that this may be due to the large size of the catalog. Also, I guess that's because the data has to flow through a USB port, which slows things down, too.

So here are my questions for entry:

  • Should I cut my photos in several catalogs? In other words, move some of the old photos in the catalogues separated by year, for example?
  • Can I import photos that I take on my internal hard drive, work on them from there and then move them to the external drive when I'm actually a treatment to get a quicker response?
  • Are there other ways to speed up Organizer I'm not considering?

Any ideas or comments would be appreciated. If it's important, I'm under 8 items on a Windows Vista-based computer.

You can find the location and the name of your catalog to help file-> System Info.

If you are not aware of his situation, then I think it's probably at its default location on your C:\ drive, so no need to move.

    I just upgraded to window 7 for windows 10. 6 Lightroom does not start because it cannot open the catalog or one of my backups

    Yes, once the user account is the upgrade to windows 10 have permission on the folder of photo issue, which prevents the Lightroom to create the necessary temp file when the catalog is launched.

    This is the reason why I asked to copy the catalog file to another location to narrow down the reason for the problem.

  • Select "All Photos" presents all the photos in the catalog except one. Why?

    It is an oddity, I have noticed for a few years now. It causes me problems, so I don't worry a lot, but I'm curious.

    If in library mode, I click on "All photos" at the top right, then disable all filters, then press CMD - D so that no pictures are selected, just above the film, in the lower left corner of the screen, I read:

    «All photographs [X-1] x pictures»

    where X is the total number of photos in my catalog. For example, right now, it reads "11090 11091 photos." If I had to import another 50 images, it would read '11040 11041 photos.'

    It has been so for some time, as I said. And I guess there is not much difference. I wonder sometimes, however, if there is some photo of mysterious ghost somewhere, who does not appear for some reason any. No idea what's going on here? Thank you.

    In the menu bar, try Photo > stacking > expand all stacks, that is, it is possible that you have a stack collapsed.

    Files that I was still using yesterday now are more connected to the catalog.  Try to locate the files I get the message "the file is associated with another photo in the catalog. How can I find and solve.

    Thank you

    This is because this same image, same time date and time of the device, is already in the catalog using a different file name.

    Conversely having not happening again is to STOP Renaming files on import or manually in the file manager or with another image, software.

    Each camera has a system that can be customized if necessary if you have 2 cameras of the same brand and model of separate file naming. And even then, they are separated by the serial number of each camera.

  • Essbase Studio - Import Catalog using an automatic process

    Hello

    I want to make the process of importing Essbase Studio more automatic catalog in the customer environment. Instead of having to open the Essbase Studio application whenever I want to deploy a new version of the catalog (full or partial), is it possible to export/import the catalog using a unix shell script or the command BACK?

    Thanks in advance

    I think that the options will be limited to automate migration until 11.1.2.3 where LCM is supported by the Studio.

  • After the migration of the catalog security issues

    Hello

    We installed a new environment of Sys (11.1.1.7.0) and now need to migrate the OBI of Dev (11.1.1.7.0) objects. Everything works as expected in Dev with connection and view dashboards appropriate according to the permissions of the users. Now, after the migration to Sys when we try to connect to hostname:9704 / analytic all users cannot see the table edge and catalog of objects. WebLogic even does not see everything. I can see items in catalog offline through the Manager of catalog or Windows Explorer. If I look at the catalog using the Catalog Manager my permissions do not allow me to see all items in folders. However, Dev, I am able to do. It seems that some thing is out of sync btwn the catalogue and policy store even if users have the relevant groups assigned in the weblogic LDAP. Any ideas on what might be happening or how to fix?

    Migration process:
    (1) store the migrated policies and identity sys Dev store. Confirmed objects have been migrated.
    (2) migrated RPD and sys Dev catalog. Confirmed objects have been migrated.
    (3) refreshed GUID in Sys
    (4) services start successfully

    Kind regards
    Mike

    Hi André.

    I worked with Mike on this permissions problem and can provide feedback.

    I compare the "Shared folders" privileges between the two environments, DEV (works) and TEST (does not work).

    The DEV environment has:

    Name - Type of permission - details-
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -Authentication user - Application role - total control - control total
    -Presentation Server Admins - role of catalog - full control - full control

    The TEST environment has:

    Name - Type of permission - details-
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -Admin BI role - Application role - full control - full control
    -Role of consumer BI - custom...-read, through, etc. - the Application role

    I'm changing the TEST environment to reflect our operation DEV permissions:

    Name - Type of permission - details-
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -Authentication user - Application role - total control - control total
    -Presentation Server Admins - Application role - full control - full control

    I am now able to log in as my administrator user and have access to the appropriate objects.

    I have a few questions, I hope you can clear up however.

    (1) something in our process of migration to our TEST about. must have updated the privileges of shared folders not to include roles authenticated the user & Presentation Server Admins/groups. It's weird, because we migrated all our DEV operating environment around. No indication of what we have fact/lack would be useful.

    (2) authorities 'Shared Folders' REP on my DEV TEST Server vs server, the type of role is 'Catalogue', and 'Application' on the other. How we do conversion as a catalogue to an application from DEV to TEST role?

    DEV:

    Name - Type
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -Presentation Server Admins - role catalog

    TEST:

    Name - Type
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -Presentation Server Admins - Application role

    Much obliged.

  • Capture a paralytic to the catalog... ERROR

    Hello

    I'm trying to capture a paralytic to a catalog. In my opinion, the steps I take are completely straight, but unfortunately I get an error message. Here is my code:

    CaptureVAppParamsType captureVappParamsType = new CaptureVAppParamsType();
    captureVappParamsType.setSource(vapp.getReference());
    captureVappParamsType.setName(vappName);
    captureVappParamsType.setDescription("Here goes a description");
    VappTemplate vappTemplate = vdc.captureVapp(captureVappParamsType);

    for (Task task : vappTemplate.getTasks()) {
    try {
         Task.waitForTask(getVcloudClient(), task.getReference(), creationTaskDurationTimeout);
    } catch (TimeoutException e) {
         // TODO Auto-generated catch block
         result = false;
         e.printStackTrace();
    }
    }

    This part works completely fine. Then I try to add the item to the catalog:

    Catalog catalog = VCatalogGet(catalogName);

    if (result) {
    CatalogItemType catalogItemType = new CatalogItemType();
    catalogItemType.setName(vappName);
    catalogItemType.setDescription("Blabalalala");
    catalogItemType.setHref(vappTemplate.getReference().getHref());
    catalogItemType.setEntity(vappTemplate.getReference());
    CatalogItem catalogItem = catalog.addCatalogItem(catalogItemType);
    }

    The error I get is:

    INFO: Actual Status Code - 404
    com.vmware.vcloud.sdk.VCloudException: Resource not found
    at com.vmware.vcloud.sdk.Response.handleUnExpectedResponse(Response.java:132)

    at com.vmware.vcloud.sdk.SdkUtil.post(SdkUtil.java:123)
    at com.vmware.vcloud.sdk.Catalog.addCatalogItem(Catalog.java:142)

    The interesting thing is, when I do:

    VappTemplate vappTemplateCheck = VappTemplate.getVappTemplateByReference(getVcloudClient(), vappTemplate.getReference());

    I can get the model.

    So any ideas?

    Hello

    I think that in your VCatalogGet (catalogName) implementation is something like that.

    You have found the catalog using Catalog.getCatalogByReference (adminCatalogRef). The adminCataloRef is AdminOrganization-> getCatalogRefs(). This property returns the Catalog Admin references. This is false.

    You should get the catalog using Catalog.getCatalogByReference (catalogRef). The catalogue REF must be from an organization-> getCatalogRefs(). This returns the catalog references.

    Kind regards

    Rajesh Kamal.

  • Each photo is reset to default values in the catalog! Help, please.

    Hello users of Lightroom.

    I pray that someone may be able to help me with this im to big problem with my catalog.

    I consider myself an experienced on 2.6 and one user macbbook pro.

    I was editing some new photos recently and didn't do anything out of the ordinary that I can remember.

    Now, I noticed that all of my 6 000 pics in my catalog had its reset settings in the log history on the left side in the develop module.

    so when I click on any old photo and click on D go in the development, the photo module resets what she looked like before the changes and appers to RESET the SETTINGS of the history on the left column. (and thumbnails for the update of the whole folder)

    Although I haven't lost the changes it requires me to save a single line in the historic bar to retrieve the editing of photos...

    Some you will suggest if you please how I can prevent it. It is a disaster for me.

    I tried to reload a backup of the catalog, and its still happening.

    While you don't need to save metadata to file (or files in the case of propitiatory formats sidecar) as LR it stores in the catlog file itself, if you do can save headaches in the future. If read you the metadata of a file, LR replaces the metadata, it was stored in the catalog with one in the file, which can be usful if you have turned the image into another LR catalog or added data in Bridge... In the case of the original RAW files that have had no new written metadata will return the catalog back to the State it was in when the original file importing. A backup of your catalog if you have one from a date before reading the data should correct this. Otherwise, I think you can be confused for a solution.

  • the catalog vs. multiple catalogs

    I am kind of new to lightroom. My question is I have all my photos in a catalog, which seems to be OK, but I have 4000 + photos and many more to be added. What are the pros and cons to one against multiple catalogs?

    I am using several keywords and color and other markings.

    Thank you
    Mike

    There is much to say on this issue, and the debate festers sometimes... but I highly recommend a catalogue.

    In my opinion, the more photos you have, the more important thing is to keep your entire organization in a catalog. Anything else translates into confusion, where you do not remember what catalog has the photo of interest; or she translates into obstacles, you want a picture of the catalog and a couple of photos of the catalog B and a little more than catalogue Q, and there is no easy way to put them all together.

    I point out that I agree with John, and I added another exception to his list: If you have COMPLETELY overlapping subject (as from personal photos and company photos) and there is no chance of confused you that catalog Christmas family photos are, then go and separate the business of work (but nevertheless, there are drawbacks If you are not careful you can accidentally import personal pictures in the catalogue of the company and vice versa)

  • How can I make the best use of a new external hard drive and a new catalog full of photos just loaded into Photoshop elements 14 Organizer?

    How can I make the best use of a new external hard drive and a new catalog full of photos just loaded into Photoshop elements 14 Organizer?

    Keep all the files on external hard drive image?  Nothing else and no pictures on the desktop?

    Keep all image files both places?

    What is the best way to go through thousands of images in the Organizer to identify and place them in files?

    Once I've placed a file, I just leave it in the entire catalog or a way indicate to me that it has been sorted?

    As overwhelming, any tips/shortcuts/schemes, you can offer are welcome!

    As I only have the version of the EP, here is some info on the organiser:

    https://helpx.Adobe.com/Photoshop-elements/how-to/use-elements-Organizer.html

    Independent of how this feature works, you want to have your photos in one place and have a backup (second copy) somewhere else. All hard drives will not be successful at some point - some more early, some late - never trust to have your files in any safety devices if they are on a single disc. Once you have your sorted, it would be useful that you will organize/name/tag new photos immediately if the task is relatively short and simple. I copy my photos on my internal hard drive for my camera, take a quick look with preview to see who needs some changes and then decide where to put them - either drop them immediately after naming them or bring in an editing application and then file them away.
