  Not an area of expertise (you will see), but since nobody else has replied, here's my 2 p.

  Most devices, even the oldest, will have megabytes of memory available for the use of the application.  The BlackBerry uses Unicode, each screen character requires 2 bytes.  There are some an extra charge for a string in terms of management objects, but nevertheless, you are looking to 500 000 characters for each MB of storage.  Very rough usage figures, on the "BOLD" in a typical font, you get about 11 lines at up to 40 characters on a line, so we can say 500 characters is 1 page.  So roughly 1 megabyte will hold 1000 pages.  So the limitation on the amount of text that you put in the display won't be the memory, it will be its usefulness for the user.

  Given my experience with send and receive e-mails on the device, I recommend display over 4 pages to the user, so limit your scope to about 2,000 characters - not because it is a restriction of the memory, but because users dislike trawl by more text than that.
