  Usually, HARD drive recovery option should be available by pressing F8 at the beginning of the startup procedure.
  Then an Advanced Start menu should appear where you could choose fix my computer-> drive HARD recovery

  If this is not possible, then you will need to retrieve the laptop using the Toshiba recovery disc.

  Do you mean the column on the side left where you have local folders, Inbox etc. ?
  If Yes, it is called list of cases, no toolbar.
  Open Windows Mail > at the top menu bar click VIEW > Layout > y at - it a checkmark in front of the folder list? > if not, check it out > OK

  Do you still have the MBP? If so you can manually copy and paste the files you need.

  If you do not have the pro more, you need to buy a USB key and plug it into the MBA... use it as a target. Once you have a system file of the previous laptop again, you have to manually choose what to copy across.
