The upgrade of the host, VMware ESXI 4.1

Hello

I am running a host VMware ESXi 4.1. It seems that VMware claims now this product VMware vSphere Hypervisor (am I right?). Was it a name change purely marketing, or they introduce new functions as well? Is VSphere Hypervisor a more recent version of ESXi

Is there a tool to upgrade VMware ESXi 4.1 for newer versions (no matter if their output yet or not, just wondering about the upgrade in general)?

Thanks in advance!

Don't worry, it's all the same. You have the same binary files for all editions of ESXi, it is only the license key that locks or unlocks features. I think that the main reason why VMware decided to call ESXi free edition "Hypervisor" was because many people were confused that ESXi is free or not.

There are two upgrade options ESXi. For the first, you must have a licensed version of vCenter Server, which offers the "Update Manager". The second is to use the command line utility "vihostupdate".

In addition, you can take a look at http://www.vm-help.com/esx41/Patching_4.1_with_the_host_update_utility.php

We have some servers Dell R720 with 256G RAM and 2 6core Procs.  When I install ESXi client for internal hard drives (mirrored array) it takes literally more than 5 minutes to start.  I can watch the vmware boot process crawl slowly the progress bar on the screen in "recovery" mode before moving on to the substantive start-up procedure yellow.

Why is this slow process?  Why a hard drive inside is install using syslinux? • How can I determine if the host is ESXi free or licensed?

How can one know if an ESXi host is ESXi free, or if it is allowed?

I searched through the crowd on a couple of different configurations and I don't see anything obvious that indicates this.  I ask because there are some features that only work on ESXi under license and would like to be able to detect the server type I'm talking about.

I guess that there is a way to do so under the ha - Manager of licenses.

    Thank you

    Eric

The method that I use to check for this in my scripts is to use the licenseManager watch ownership licenses and see if the license is equivalent to "esxBasic", the host is ESXi, if both these things are true, then you are using the free version of ESXi. In my view, there is another method in which the free version does not contain the full name of some kind, but I forgot what it was. If the above solution worked for me for some time and is simple to check

We have a dell blade chassis, with 4 710 blades and 8 610 the 710's have 12 network cards and the 610's have only 6 network adapters. I added a new host on one of the 610's and two network adapters in each of the networks belonging to virtual infrastructure. 1 mgmt 2. ISCSI 3. vmnetwork

My problem is that the new host can see all the resources but I can't move the VM from the hosts to the host 610 710. I get an error because nic 2 on the 710 host is not in the same network as nic 2 on the 610. It seems silly that I wouldn't be able to do that just because the hardware is not identicle.

I have three vswitches, vswitch0 for management, vswitch1 for the iSCSI network of shared storage, vswitch2 for the network of the vm.

    Thanks for any help.

Material is not identical not should not have an impact.

The vSwitch port group to which are connected the NICs in question is named identically on both hosts?  If they have a different name, vSphere considers different networks.

  • PowerCLI defining politics NTP to "Start and stop with the host" in ESXi 5

Would appreciate any help in the definition of the strategy NTP on ESXi 5 hosts 'start and stop with the host. My script is currently using the following:

    Get-VMHost MyEsx | Get-VMHostService | where {$_.} Key - eq 'ntpd'} | Game-VMHostService-policy "automatic."

This sets up the NTP service in "start automatically if all ports are open and stop when all ports are closed.

    "When I cange to 'MyEsx Get-VMHost | Get-VMHostService | where {$_.} Key - eq 'ntpd'} | Game-VMHostService-political ' market / stop with host"" the following is returned:

«The possible enumeration values are "auto, On, Off«»»»

Anyone know of a way (in PowerCLI) of the set up for the 'start and stop with host?

OK, then you should choose politics "on".

These are the policy values and what they match.

    Like this

    Get-VMHost MyEsx | Get-VMHostService | where {$_.Key -eq "ntpd"} | Set-VMHostService -Policy On

  • Additional physical network adapters on host VMware ESXi 3.5

I would like to add additional physical network cards to host VMware ESX 3.5 (update 3). I installed two PCIe Intel NIC (E1G42ET) server for the HP ProLiant DL 380 G5 server. Both NIC cards recognized by the BIOS of the server.

After you connect to the VMware VI Client I can't see or add new maps.

In addition, new non-visible material in the host ESX console.

You are not sure if the drivers of NETWORK interface card must be installed manually?

    Hello

VMware ESX is NOT Linux, there a GNU/Linux management machinery... ESXi is not even there a device for managing Posix. Drivers for Linux won't work with ESX or ESXi. If the card is not without the HCL for ESX/ESXi, then it won't work with ESX/ESXi. Usually not in list HCL implies VMware doesn't have a driver yet for this card. All drivers must come from VMware ESX and ESXi recognize the hardware.

  • The host VMware workstation and multi-core CPU

Apologies if this has already been answered, but all my research to turn questions about processors how can specify in a virtual machine. It's not what I'm after here.

I want to know is the use of VMware workstation (v6 and v7) is available on a multi-core worksation host physical cores.

I have a scenario where we have several virtual machines containing sensitive coding environments. The material that they are on is a little old and we don't have the time or the knowledge to recreate systems (a combination of Matlab, DSpace and some custom coding). Our only option (and we did it for a couple with success so far) is to create virtual machines of these workstations.

Which is absolutely essential for us is the material we choose VMs on host. Virtual machines will use simple/double/processors virtual.

In order to choose the correct hardware platform, I need to know if VMware workstation is running an instance of the virtual computer within a single processor (in this case is the reduced performace?), or if there are multithreaded and make the most of the hardware it will run on.

(We are not welcome, never more 2 virtual machines at the same time)

Any suggestions on material would be appreciated also. I think of something based around a core of Xeon 4-6 with 12-16 GB of RAM.

    Thank you very much

Correct, for laboratory/debugging and interaction VM Workstation is pretty good.

  • vSphere Client 5 U1 unable to connect to the host of U1 ESXi 4.1

    Hello

    I'm having a small problem.

I am currently using vSphere Client 5 U1 (5.0.0 Build 623373) to connect directly to ESXi hosts (still no vCenter).

I can connect successfully to 5.0 U1 hosts, but I have a few hosts U1 4.1 inherited in the lab which I just can't connect with.

A little research in the compatibility tables show that with the most recent client, I should be able to connect do former ESXi hosts.

However, when I try to connect to this host U1 4.1, I get a popup to update with the message "customer support required files must be extracted from the 'vsphereclient.vmware.com' server and installed". And then I get a prompt to install/save a Setup program.

What is this new installer? Another version of the Client? Have I not the newest one? Anyway, I can't complete the download for this new installer (connection failure).

The host of ESXi 4.1 is on the network and I can connect with an older Client (4.1) that is installed in a different workstation.

    What happens here?

    Thanks in advance!

You must install as vSphere client major versions (3, 4, 5) but VMware tries to make this process as transparent as possible. That's why it asks to install it automatically.

Once installed, just launch v5 and it automatically and transparently pass the correct version if you connect to a 4.x server.

  • Workstation Pro 12 will be not client 32-bit Vista autofit then resizes of the host window

I use 12 Pro Workstation on Windows 7 64 bit.

I had a VM Vista 32 - bit desktop 11 step, I had put for the prompt automatically resize to fit the host VMware window.

I upgraded to Workstation Pro 12, open the virtual machine and updated for compatibility of 12 jobs. I started it up and everything was fine with the resizing as a guest before to match the host window.

Then, I've updated the VMware Tools. And now, if I resize the window host VMware, Vista clients sound USB connect/disconnect bongs, and after a few seconds, the host window snaps back to its previous size.

It is the only VM 32 bits that I have, but with Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 8.1 VMs version 12 VMware Tools work very well and comments autofit works exactly as it did before.

All work around (other that the no upgrade VMWare Tools)?

    Thank you

    Alan

Same thing happened for me (Vista 32-bit). Same guest machine worked well with Workstation 8 but update to hardware of Pro 12 caused the automatic adjustment to stop working for this particular machine. Windows 10 and Windows 8 virtual machines work fine.

Interestingly, I found that disabling the hardware acceleration of 3D (under the virtual computer screen settings) solved the problem for me - which is something I had to do to solve another problem I had. Not sure if you have improvements 3D accelerated or not, but it can be worth it.

  • Disconnecting from the host

    Hello

Couple of guests ESXi 5.0 had been disconnected and inside a few seconds showed connected in vSphere client.

    Mihir Hello,

If the host is having more number of snapshots for virtual machines, you will be running such problems.

Please the devil on the virtual machine for large number of snapshots.

The default value of ThreadstackSizekb is 128 and can handle only a limited number of snapshots.

If you exceed this number then e will host disconnected.

Rather than increase the value of threadstack, we can delete or consolidate snapshots for virtual machines.

There is a line in the file vpxa.cfg on the host that has a entry and the value 128.  When vpxa service attempts to connect to vCenter this Thread stack is limited to not allow the virtual machines that are too many clichés.

If you do not want the pictures should be deleted, we will increase the threadstacksize so that the host can handle more number of snapshtos.

Please let me know if you still have questions.

    Thank you

  • How to increase the amount of memory to the host system?

    Hello gentlemen,

I am new to VMware ESXi 5, and I want to know how to increase the amount of memory for the host system?

I saw in the Configuration menu of the host, my ESXi host has only 77.3 MB. I think it's wrong, it's too little amount of memory dedicated to the host system. It is not a (Properties) button after I was able to change the amount of memory host system.

Please, be so kind, help me!

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the community,

where do you see this amount of memory?

The total amount of memory installed on the host can be seen in the summary, tab (resources) with the host country is selected in the inventory.

  • vSphere cannot connect after time on the host change

I am a relative noob when it comes to virtualization.  I did a lot of research for the response, but can't find it.  Maybe you guys can help.

Connected to the host (VMWare vSphere for ESXi 4.0) management console, I changed the time on the host because he was distant.  After that, the vSphere console has become very slow, and when I clicked on another tab it has expired.

I closed vSphere and tried to reconnect and now I have a message that says:

vSphere could not connect with the server vCenter Server "[host IP address] '.

Details: A connection failure has occurred (unable to connect to the remote server)

I went directly to the physical console machine and press F2 to enter the system setup.  I restarted the management agent.  I can ping the IP address.  I can not connect via puTTy, but I do not think that I never activated the SSH access.

Has anyone ever encountered this?  What should I do?  I can't restart the host right now because the production servers are running on the VMWare.  If I have to restart later, what is the correct procedure for this? (close the BONES of the VM, and then restart the host?)

I had this happen before. I was unable to restart the services or navigate from the console. I waited until hours off-peak and connected directly in the less critical guest OS and stop them. I had to stop several before I could get access again vcenter. Once I had access i vMotioned the rest of the guests to other hosts and restarted the ESXi host. It's a risk, because if you cannot close machines you have to powercycle. You seem to have access, so you can be able to stop them from the CLI on the host.
