Time Machine backup question

I just bought a Mac Mini with TWO separate drives (ssd and hard drive) and I also bought a WD 1 TB of external drive to my Time Machine backups - so my question is:-How can I make sure that the disk WD and Time Machine will back up the TWO disks? and how do I configure this? Thanks in advance.

Open the Time Machine system preferences pane, click Options, and check the exclusion list.

  • Disk utility does not not what Time Machine backup connected / file Vault question?

    Hi all

    I'm on Mac OSX El Capitan 10.11.3 (15 d 21) on a Macbook Pro 8.2 (early 2011)

Previously, when File Vault was not activated I've been able to backup on my external drive for Time Machine (1 TB store Transcend jet) and the drive was visible when opening disk utility no problem...

Now since I have encrypted my first Macintosh HD using File Vault, my disk utility program will not load when my Time Machine (unencrypted) external backup disk is connected, and I can not back up by using the application Time Machine (the player is simply not visible).

When my external drive for Time Machine is not connected, my disk utility opens very well and I can see my Macintosh HD all external USB drives.

I tried to re-boot, I tried to disconnect all external devices, I tried to connect the Time Machine drive with two USB ports and I tried to open the first disk utility, and then connect the external drive for Time Machine without success.

Anyone else have experience with this problem or something similar? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you very much!

  • How can I restore mac Time machine backup to most recent?

So, I recently met several problems with my old mac. He started acting upward with the blinking folder and question mark more often. So I did multiple time machine backups and have since then tried to reinstall the OS and many other options, but it looks like my mac middle of 2007 has had its day. So I bought a new mac and tried to restore the back upward on the external hard drive. I get the message that his back is an older version and it cannot be restored and I should use from the other mac migration assistant.

So the question is: If the first mac is burned and I can not restore settings etc of the time external hard disk machine, how to restore the whole upward? Can I transfer files only?

    Very much appreciated.

    g

    Hi Sir,

You cannot restore data in time machine just like that. You use the data transfer assistant to recover your old records to your new Mac.

The data that you used time machine made to your old mac are not available to your new mac. There is limitation of the system.

    Hope this could help you.

  • Two MacBooks, 10.11.4, a fast Time Machine backup and a very slow

In our office at home, connected to a Gigabit ethernet on the same switch network, we have two MacBooks.  One is a 2011 MBP with a 1 TB SSD (third party), and is an MBA in 2015 with a 512 GB SSD (Apple).  A Linux server on the same network running Netatalk 3 providing the backup network drives, one for each laptop. The two TImeMachine network drives are on the same physical server drive.  Two laptops running 10.11.4 and darn are configured almost identically.  Neither laptop has no trouble finding the network backup drives, and they begin to run backups without problem.

The old MBP was a workaholic and functioning flawlessly for years, including the fast and regular Time Machine backups. File unique restorations are done with some regularity, and they always worked (I don't think that once done, we use a complete restore of the system from scratch, and it worked).

The new MBA, in contrast, had endless questions from and complementing the backups.  Last night, for example, I decided to simply reformat the drive on the server where there is a material error affecting the MBA (I ran Linux fsck to check the file system before you wipe it off and he's found no errors) and resumed full backups on two laptops.  The MBP has about 600 GB for the first backup, and complete the backup in about 5 hours.

MBA, with about 350 Go back up, was still underway this morning and had less than half the backup is finished. In the console log, he showed he was backing about 5 GB/hour.  Not only that, but the incremental backups took a lot of hours (more than overnight), making it impossible to never complete because it must be packed and taken to work at some point in the morning.  I.e. backups are all simple broken on this MBA.

The MBA connects to the network with a third USB3 (Anker) hub that has a Gigabit Ethernet port on this subject.  I downloaded iperf for Mac and Linux server and found that this is right about 900 Mbps throughput, so I expect an optimal bandwidth is achieved in this regard.

Any ideas what might be happening here?  Diagnosis between the two to see what could be such a radical difference? Tried to change taps the network wiring/switch problems, without change. Reset, no change.

We have two other Macs also running backups in this way, under 10.11.4,, and they were also without problem. Also is it just that an MBA, the most recent of the bunch, problems.

A third-party file server is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know that's not what you want to hear. I know that Time Machine accepts the device as a backup destination. I know that the developer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you are trying to restore and find that you can't.

Apple has published a specification for network devices that works with Time Machine. No third party provider, AFAIK, does meet this specification. They all use the application of Netatalk incomplete, obsolete Apple Filing Protocol.

Apple does not endorse any device third-party network for use with Time Machine. See this support article.

Network backup, use as destination an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or a 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only 802.11ac base stations support time Machine, not older model.

Otherwise, use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to save, although none of them are nowhere near as effective or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.

If you are determined to continue to use the device with Time Machine, your only remedy for any problems that result is for the developer (who will blame Apple, neither you nor anyone else but herself.)

  • Clone of Time machine backup to a new drive?

I'm trying to help out a new Mac. Before, I had two back ups of all my data: on the hard drive of my old iMac and my external time machine backup disk. Long story, but during the process of troubleshooting using AppleCare support, my iMac has been cleared. Now, I have only the Time Machine external backup.

I bought a new drive for Time Machine external backup on my new Mac. I am very very afraid of something bad happens to my old Time Machine backup during the troubleshooting process. My question is, is there a way to clone back to the top of my old drive time machine to the new, so I once more two copies?  If something happens to my old time machine up during this process of troubleshooting, I won't lose all my files.

I'm not familiar with the Time Machine backups, and even if they need to be cloned since that they are not bootable backups.  The following link is dated but maybe having the relevant documents:

  • Time machine backup on my external drive...

    Hello

I am doing this for the first time so I need some help here please.

I have a 5 years, 250 GB Mac Book Pro running on Mac OS X 10.6.8.  I have NEVER done a Time Machine backup first.

I have an external hard drive 1 TB, which has about 200 GB of data backed up from my Mac Book pro and other files.

I want to upgrade to El Capitan and want to back up my book ALL of the mac pro.

My question is, is the external drive with about 750 GB of sufficiently available to back up my entire Mac Book pro...?  Looks like it should be. The IMPORTANT question is, somehow will it delete my existing files in my external drive...? How can I make sure that this does not happen...?

Separately, I have 2 accounts on my Mac Book Pro, when I back up my laptop using Time Machine, goes up two accounts...? ... Should I be logged into my main account so it backs up two accounts...? How that will work in a restaurant...?

    Thanks in advance!

    Vik

    Hello

Your best bet would be to clone your entire drive to another Partition on the hard drive, external, but repartitioning is not without risk.

TM should work but is not ideal. TM backs up only the account your as I recall.

Everything that you be sure to secure boot, now hold SHIFT key on startup to repair the startup disk, and then use Utilityto repair disk external hard disk.

  • I've never done a Time Machine backup and I have upgraded to iOS Sierra. Help!

I'm a fool. After owning my Macbook for 5 years, I failed to make a single Time Machine backup. I just saved my essential to an external hard drive. I have upgraded to iOS Sierra. Big mistake. I want to go back to iOS Capitan, but it does not seem possible. Now, my external hard drive is wiped clean (things are dark). What are my options? If I'm stuck with Sierra?

If you have downloaded El Capitan, it should always be available in your purchases. Now, you will need to make a backup to backup your personal files.

  • error - 36 on Time Machine backup

Help! I went on vacation for a week of my iMac running that yosemite was working fine when I left him. I left it turned on on my back, he had frozen, and disk utility showed that the player needed repair but it was irreparable. So I started from a system disk and deleted from my drive, hoping to restore from my Time Machine backup which was connected all the time. (I also have a Clone of Carbon Copy backup). But the Time machine backup restores, showing me "error-36". I'm quite familiar with the operations of Terminal "dot_clean", but when I try it tells me that the command is unknown. And, of course, the problem is with the Time Machine backup, not with my hard drive. is it possible to repair the Time Machine backup in my situation? I can't restore my backup CCC because my iMac can't see, had no installed system. I'm about to try to completely install the original Snow Leopard system from the boot disk and then either try to restore from time Machine, or migrate it again.

    Can anyone offer advice please?

  • Cannot delete the Time Machine backups

I have a MacBook Air and a 128 GB USB key that holds my library of photos, so I always make backups. My system - and I have recently made account how flawed it was - was to create backups on a 500 GB HARD drive, but to transfer them to a 2 TB HARD drive when it is full. So, I finally discovered that when I transfer backups in small quantities to the 2 TB, it takes more space because instead of aliases of files used to represent more recent backups, care of file just copied over and over again. For this reason, I put my 2 TB as a feature of time machine and imported all the old backups in the folder backups.db, that my Mac 'cleaned' and registered 135 GB. But 135 GB is not enough, I went and delete backups that I don't have anymore. When I looked in the trash to empty, I've seen 2 things: backups I have trashed and others who are pale sort out. I can't open the files, even if I right click and select "open in a new tab. When I try to "immediately remove" these paled-out files, I always get a message that they are "on duty." It is about 300 GB, so I must get rid of him. But it does not stop there, because when I try to "delete immediately" backups I had trashed myself, I get an error message! It is a total of about 600 GB, what I absolutely need to get rid of! If anyone has some tips, it will be greatly appeciated.

You have probably sprayed your Time Machine backup database. The best thing to do is erase the disc with Airport utility. Then start again with a new backup.

    Good day.

  • How can I migrate a time machine backup external USB drive to time capsule

Searched the forums and can't seem to find an answer. With the help of El Capitan 10.11.6. You want to transfer backups Time Machine 4 years on an external USB drive on my new Time Capsule. Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated.

There is no official method because it has problems.

    There's no official way.

    Here see Q18. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

We recommend that people not me there. It has not proven reliable long-term. Start a new backup on the TC and keep the USB stick in the form of archive. After a few months or a year you won't have it.

You have to understand the Time Machine backup otherwise locally the CF network. It is easy enough to move the backup network local but much harder the other way around.

  • Cannot switch between multiple Time Machine backups

I generally save my 2010 Macbook Pro to a 2012 Time Capsule, which is attached to my router via an ethernet cable (most recent) wireless. On a trip, I make the additional backups on an external hard drive. However, when I go home and try to return to the TC, my internal HD is now on the time Machine "Exclude" list and cannot be removed (greyed out). When I try to save, I get a message saying "no disks are available to back up."

What has happened a few times, and the only solution I could find was to delete my original Time Machine backup and put a new (which took forever).

Any ideas why my HD internal is added to the exclusion list after using Time Machine with an external hard drive?

Time Machine backups on a network drive or a disc attached locally stored in different formats. Switching between them was not in the overall theme of the design of this service of OS X.

I suggest that you set up Time Machine to use multiple disks.

FWIW, in my case, I backup destinations, Time Machine on a Time Capsule and an external hard drive of 2 bolt of lightning. When both are available, the time goes 'take turns' Machine backup on each drive.

If a disk is not available, it backs up to that which is, and which ignores the backup of the other. When the two are connected again, backups continue on both.

  • Time machine backup missing messages?

I recently did a clean install on my MacBook Pro. I don't want my my time Machine user account migrate upward, but I would like to transfer my text messages. I know that messages are located in the user/library/messages/archive folder that I can find on my Mac, but there is no such folder on the Time Machine backup?

    What Miss me?

    Hello

I would be accessing ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages/Archive on my computer because that's where my Archive is.

See the path bar across the bottom.

I know some posters have said there is here an Alias that is connected to ~Library/Messages/Archive as you describe.

If you have two different locations through the current startup and time Machine, you might need to manually open the backup file and then drag the content to where you want to or need them to be.

  • Time Machine backup migration wizard

    Hello

I have a MBP (2012 model) running OSX 10.11.6. The hard drive has encountered an error that I couldn't get (invalid node structure). After spending the better part of a day of troubleshooting, I finally erased the drive and reinstall the OS from the OSX Internet Recovery Mode option. After that I reinstalled OSX version accompanying (Mavericks), I was going to transfer all my files from my USB external time Machine drive. I checked using the Migration Wizard, and I had the opportunity to transfer any of the player. Instead, I thought I'd be better to first upgrade to el capitan (it was on 10.11.6 when it stopped working) and install the programs I use (MS Office) before the transfer, so I went through this process. Now when I try to restore the files using Migration Assistant in el Capitan, he can't seem to find the USB Time Machine backup drive - it retains just turn on "the search for Source...". "on the transfer to this Mac screen information. If I leave the Migration Wizard, the USB key is accessible in the Finder. Don't know what to do at this point, but I really need these files (years of family photos are my biggest concern about losing).

    Thank you

    Mike Camden

OK - I've solved it. For some reason, it wouldn't find the backup disk, Time Machine in the Migration Wizard, when I plugged directly on the port of USB of MBP (although he appeared and is accessible from the Finder); However, on a whim, I plugged into the USB port on my Airport Extreme, connected my MBP to it as a shared resource on the network and is running Migration Wizard again. Migration assistant immediately found and was able to make the Time Machine restore - it took much longer overall than network he would like a USB drive, but I let it run all night, and everything was finished this morning.
